Below please find my open letter to Celia Farber,
founder/editor of The Truth Barrier and
author of two March 18 articles: “Am I Bigoted Against Atheists Or Socialists?”, and “An Apology”.

Dear Celia Farber,
Thank
you for your well-written essay and for your courage to enter into a dialogue
disagreeing with the Capitalist/Communist binary opposition, which we have endured ad nauseam since before the Russian
Revolution. The German Marxist intellectual leader, Karl Kautsky,
wrote on the eve of the Russian revolution, in 1917, "Either Lenin is
wrong or Marx was wrong; they both cannot be right." If you have the time
to study the writings of these two intellectual giants - Marx and Lenin - you
will certainly find that their logic was quite different. Who was right and who
was wrong is another matter, as they wrote in different environments; these two
intellectuals have simply offered a sketch, the final production awaits us. We
can no more blame them for the crimes of the 20th Century than we can blame
Sir Isaac Newton for not taking into account the principles of quantum
mechanics, or Charles Darwin for not including the roles of DNA and RNA in this
theory of evolution.
You
have presented very thought-provoking views on social change, although I'm not
convinced that I could join you in endorsing “Elitist Theory” over “Class
Theory” as an approach to explain where we are today. Marx 's massive critique of capitalism is complex. If
you've read The Communist Manifesto (1848), which he wrote while still in his 20's, you
can see that his polemic against the various Idealists was to defend a holistic (which is to say systemic) view of the social dynamics of
which we are all a part.
His
conclusion, at this early stage of his work, was that capitalists are digging
their own grave. Some 23 years later, he attempted to dissuade the Communards
of Paris in 1871 from attempting a workers’ revolution and replacing capitalist
control in France with democratic control by the ordinary people; he told
them they would be massacred, and they were. I believe Marx was a humanist and
a revolutionary scientist whom you would have respected and enjoyed talking
with.
Blaming
“Communists” for the mass murder of millions, makes no more sense to me than
blaming Christians for the hideous tortures and mass murders under the
Inquisition, not to mention the dubious role of Christian leaders today, often (but
not always) supporting capitalist wars and the exploitative hierarchy of
inequalities.
These
are some of the reasons that social class interests explain more to me than individual
proclivities of so-called “Elites.” I encourage you to continue your research.
You are a gifted writer, and your research opportunities should be expanded.

thanks for sharing your thoughts so candidly.

P.S. One good
secondary source of information and analysis are the books by NYU Professor
Bertell Ollman. His careful reading of Marx has produced many insights into
Marx's mythology and his sincere intentions on insisting we live in a social
system in which we are dominated by a “ruling class,” whether we know it or
not, and the sooner we understand the illegitimate limitations under which we
are forced to live, the closer we are to gaining true emancipation. But along
that path there are many distractions and illusions which secure the power of
capitalists over us. Yes, the capitalist class is revolutionary! But its
revolutionary objectives are not ours. And today we stand once again on the
precipice of mass destruction. Perhaps you will be the one to write the 21st-century
edition of What is to be Done? (1902),
motivated as Lenin was in anticipation of World War I, and preparing for the rescue
of millions of lives with the categorical refusal to fight in a fratricidal war.
The context is
everything!

system is the secret father of “communism” and in its essence, as Dyer says,

There are many things to say about the
International Criminal Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Vladimir
Putin on charges that the Russian president directed the abduction and
deportation of thousands of children from eastern Ukraine in the early
months of the intervention that began a year ago. Let us settle on three of
these things.
Straight off the top, the ICC’s action
announced on March 17 is ridiculous in any number of ways. Its legality is questionable at the very least. Its
premise appears to bear no relationship with reality; it will have no
appreciable effect. It is a political gesture dressed up as law and, as a
political gesture dressed up as law, it is sheer propaganda, nothing
more.
If an institution such as the ICC behaves
ridiculously in these ways, it is not doing its credibility a great deal of
good. To ask what use the ICC serves, despite its elevated purpose when it was
founded 25 years ago, seems to be a good question.
There is a history behind this kind of
conduct. This is the second thing to say about what the ICC has just done. If
we study this history even briefly, we are likely to be upset, because this
history indicates that the many international institutions to which humanity
has looked as a source of impartial order for the past 70–odd years do not work
as intended. And they were fated not to work as intended so long as the United
States insists, as it has since the 1945 victories, on global dominance. This
is a case of either/or: We can have a stable world order on the basis of the
U.N. Charter or other such instruments of international law, or we can have the
American imperium, but we cannot have both.
This leads us to the third thing to say about
the ICC’s decision to issue a warrant for a head of state’s arrest. And the
third thing to say is the one that seems to me to require our attention most
urgently if we are to understand the world in which we live.
We must think hard now about what the
political philosophers call the state of exception. This notion has a history,
too, and it is a very grim one. The state of exception describes powers that
make law and at the same time proclaim themselves above the law. The history of
this concept runs from the Romans through the European monarchies on up to the
Nazi regime.
In this last case, the Third Reich operated
under a continual state of exception as against
a temporary state of exception deriving from an unforeseen emergency. And to
proceed to our point, the U.S. has claimed for itself a similarly continual
state of exception since the early Cold War years. Its relations with the ICC
are a clear manifestation of this reality.

The world is apparently descending into
chaos. With events such as the recent collapse of SVB bank adding to the
problems allegedly caused by the
pseudopandemic and the war in Ukraine, it is easy to
feel overwhelmed.
Only a few years ago it was widely recognised that, by nearly every measure, global life
outcomes were all improving. Suddenly, we’re all haunted by the spectres of conquest, war, famine and death.
From the cost of living, energy and food crisis, to the threat of a widening international conflict, a climate disaster and now global financial collapse, we seem to be gripped by a global polycrisis.
If there is a polycrisis it is entirely man-made.The good news is we can build something better if we have the will. We
are many and we are powerful, while those who seek to exploit crisis to control

Commemorations of the Attack on Iraq March 20th and Libya March 19th
Reaffirm that the U.S./EU/NATO Axis of Domination Remains the Greatest Threat
to International Peace on our Planet
Iraq and Libya were both targeted by the U.S. in the month of March. The
anniversaries of these war crimes must be commemorated, and the nature of the
US/EU/NATO war machine must be understood.
"The International Criminal Court should uphold an objective and
impartial stance, respect the jurisdictional immunity enjoyed by the head of
state in accordance with international law, exercise its functions and powers
prudently by the law, interpret and apply international law in good faith, and
avoid politicization and double standards." (Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin)
This commentary really should be part two from the piece I wrote last week in the run-up
to the anti-war mobilization that took place March 18th which commemorated the
20th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. In that article I made a similar
argument about why the U.S. should be seen as the greatest threat to the
survival of collective humanity on our planet.
That point, however, needs to be reinforced because in typical arrogance,
on the eve of that mobilization and the official March 20th date of the U.S.
invasion, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issues an arrest warrant for
Russia President Vladimir Putin while Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Tony Blair
and Barack Obama, responsible for horrific crimes against humanity and
literally millions of deaths combined in Serbia, Democratic Republic of the
Congo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and Syria, walk around as free
individuals.
It would be comical if it was not so deadly serious and absurd. Just a
couple of years ago when the ICC signaled under the leadership of the Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda
wanted to conduct an investigation
into possible crimes in Afghanistan by the U.S. state, the Trump Administration
told the court in no uncertain terms that the Court would be subjected to the
full wrath of the U.S. government and the Court quietly demurred in favor of a
national probe that everyone knew was a sham.
This is just part of the infuriating double standards
that Chinese spokesperson Wang Wenbin refers to. For
many in the global South, the “neutral” international mechanisms and structures
created to uphold international law have lost significant credibility outside
of the West.
The politicization of the ICC on the Ukrainian war
and the unprincipled participation of the United Nations that provided
political cover for the invasion and occupation of Haiti after the devastating
earthquake in 2010 are just two examples of how international structures
ostensibly committed to upholding international law and the UN Charter are now
seen as corrupt instruments of a dying U.S. and Western colonial empire.
How did we get here?
It is not a mere historical coincidence that the
world became a much more dangerous place with the escalation of conflicts that
threatened international peace in the 1990s. Without the countervailing force
of the Soviet Union, the delusional white supremacistsmaking U.S. policy believed that the next century was going to be a
century of unrestrained U.S. domination.
And who would be dominated? Largely the nations of
the global South but also Europe with an accelerated integration plan in 1993
that the U.S. supported because it was seen as a more efficient mechanism for
deploying U.S. capital and further solidifying trade relations with the huge
and lucrative European Market.
Central to the assertion of U.S. global power,
however, was the judicious use of military force. “Full Spectrum Dominance” was
the strategic objective that would ensure the realization of the “Project for a New American Century” (PNAC ). There was just one challenge that had to be overcome. The U.S.
population still suffered from the affliction labeled the “Vietnam syndrome .” Traumatized by the defeat in Vietnam the population was still reticent
about giving its full support to foreign engagements that could develop into a
possible military confrontation.
How was this challenge overcome? Human
rights.
“Humanitarian interventionism ,” with its corollary the “responsibility to protect" would emerge
in the late 90s as one of the most innovative propaganda tools ever created. Produced by Western human rights community and championed by
psychopaths like Samantha Power, the humanitarianism of the benevolent empire
became the ideological instrument that allowed the U.S. to fully commit itself
to military options to advance the interests of U.S. corporate and financial
interests globally while being fully supported by the U.S. population.

One of the most unsettling events of the
past three years has been the globalized, coordinated messaging of
socio-economic missives and policies throughout the world. All of us in the
liberty movement have wondered… who is controlling this? How does this happen?
I remember spending time last fall with
Nick Hudson of the Pandata Group (Panda). We were
discussing transgender policies across the world. We both were very disturbed,
not just by the policies but also how they came about. How did the policies of
teaching of non-binary genders in schools and the importance of youth
“transitioning” spread across world so quickly? How is it possible that South
Africa would be immersed in the same battles for “trans rights,” as the USA and
as of most of Europe? Of course, it isn’t possible without coordination.
Then our minds turned not just to the
pandemic policies of masking, mandates and lockdowns, but to climate change,
the elimination of gas fueled cars, Agenda 2030, the move to eliminate private
ownership items such as autos and housing, digital IDs, digital currency,
15-minute cities, taking away private land for conservation, globalized
censorship, etc. not just one country, but across the world. The coordinated
list seems endless.
I don’t remember
a period in my life where most of the world governments agreed on so much.
Where did these policies originate? Who is co-ordinating
them? How did this happen?
Well today, a reader of this substack wrote me about their discovery that the World
Economic Forum has a formal committee of presidents from the world’s best
universities. That these presidents are coming together regularly to discus and
decide policy at the top universities in the world. These presidents are
committed to supporting the World Economic Forum.

it’s impossible to know what’s real and what’s fake?
Podcast host Joe Rogan interviewed comedian and activist Russell Brand, delving
into these questions and more, including the overarching agenda of control
that’s accelerated since the pandemic.
Regarding the
apocalypse, Brand likened it to homeless people living their lives in tents on
the street, essentially “living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle in contemporary
America, or living a post-apocalyptic lifestyle in contemporary America.”1
“You know,
when you’re in comfortable … spaces, you feel like everything’s OK, the end of
the world is impossible. And it just seems like entertainment when you hear
about nuclear treaties being torn up, that it can’t actually happen. But, of
course it can. It’s so temporal,” Brand says.2
The pandemic
brought to light how quickly reality can move from that safe space where
“everything’s OK” to one that’s Orwellian, with rampant censorship and smear
campaigns against any and all dissent.
With Each New Reality, You Become More ‘Porous’
What most
people see and hear online is a carefully orchestrated narrative — one that
globalists weren’t expecting people like Rogan and Brand to disrupt. “What our
obligation is, as people that participate in this conversation, is to ensure
that there is a distinction made between the empirical facts that are discussed
and … the sort of joy of speculation,” Brand says.3
But many
ideas that sound far-fetched — like a social credit system — have already been
implemented in other countries, like China. Rogan explains he was warned,
“They’re going to try to implement a social credit score system, and your money
is going to be tied to decentralized digital currency.”4
“And your
money will be tied to your social credit score system and you step out of line,
you won’t be able to buy things, you won’t be able to travel, you won’t be able
to do anything. They’re going to try to keep you within a 15-minute radius of
your home. And they’re starting to do that in places. Yeah, all of it’s real.”5
So, too, is
the fact that “centralized systems of corruption that bypass democracy” exist,
while the military-industrial complex “through their overt and covert
connections to government” is able to “dictate … [or] at least influence,
foreign policy.” But, Brand says, once you open your eyes to the truths of
these matters, you become “porous” and ready to absorb even more of the truth:6
“They’ve
obviously got an agenda. And it’s their agenda that is driving the discourse,
not the facts of the matter. And I suppose, in a way, we should be grateful
that they are unwilling to have these open conversations — that they’re not
willing to get people on with various views, opposing views, to listen to
people that they disagree with, to openly criticize the establishment.
Because what
I’ve been able to learn in the last couple of years is if you start focusing on
the relationship between Big Pharma and the media, or
Big Pharma and the government, just by focusing on
that, you can really create clear narratives of corruption, hypocrisy,
dishonesty, those things are there.
But me, because
my background is not a journalist, it’s not a conventional education, I’m sort
of open to the more extraordinary, exciting, visceral ideas, which once in a
while proved to be true … but then you become kind of porous.”
‘The Middle
Is Where the Propaganda Operates’
Brand
believes there’s power to be had when you’re open to having conversations with
all sides, however, while censorship ultimately leads to a loss of trust and
authority. During the pandemic, he describes the “ivermectin
moment” as pivotal in revealing the need for open conversation.
When Rogan,
who is unvaxxed, revealed he’d treated his bout of
COVID-19 with ivermectin and other remedies — fully
recovering within three days — he was openly attacked. But Rogan believes it
ultimately made the mainstream press lose credibility:7
“When you had
CNN and MSNBC and all these different Cable News Network shows calling it [ivermectin] horse dewormer, when
it was a drug that won the Nobel Prize for the inventor of it, it’s a drug that
has had billions — literally billions — of prescriptions filled. It’s a drug
that saved lives of drug addicts.
It’s on the
World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines, and for them to have
the gall and the sheer audacity to just out and out lie to people about what a
medication is — and it’s used on humans far more than it’s used on horses.
And that they were calling that horse dewormer
to try to mock me because they knew that I was unvaccinated, and I kicked COVID
very quickly. And they did not want that narrative out there. And they
were beholden to their handlers. They were beholden to the people that give
them exorbitant amounts of money in advertising revenue. And they … followed in
line, and they all piled on. And they lost … credibility.”
Many believed
the media lies, regarding not only ivermectin but
other pandemic measures, like face masks and lockdowns. But not everyone will —
and this is where the chance for transformation lies. However, those in the
middle are vulnerable to being influenced by the propaganda. Brand notes:8
“I heard this
thing that that guy, Pavlov of the dogs, you know, he did other
experimentation, the results of which were that 20% of people are highly
susceptible to hypnosis, and similarly highly susceptible to placebos … It will
be effective under … the right conditions … and the same with hypnosis, and 20%
of people will not be hypnotized and will not respond to placebos.
The middle 60% is where propaganda
operates. How many of that middle 60% can you persuade? And I was just
astonished that authoritarianism could suddenly be repackaged in this manner,
that authoritarianism could tell you that war is a good thing, that
authoritarianism can tell you that Big Pharma is a
good thing, that being locked in your home is good.”
Only Big Pharma
Solutions Allowed
A key illustration of the corruption was the blatant vilification of any
COVID-19 solution that wasn’t tied to Big Pharma.
“Convenient that of all the remedies, that only the ones that are controlled by
pharmaceutical companies are the ones that get highlighted,” Rogan says.9 “And
one … of the best pieces of evidence for that is vitamin D.”
One recent study found giving vitamin D to people with COVID-19 cut risk
of death from SARS-CoV-2 by 51% and reduced risk of admission to the intensive
care unit by 72%.10 I also launched an information campaign to
raise awareness about the use of vitamin D for COVID-19 back in June
2020. My own
vitamin D review was published October 31, 2020,
in the high-impact, peer-reviewed journal Nutrients.11
At the time,
14 observational studies suggested vitamin D levels are inversely linked with
the incidence or severity of COVID-19, and my paper concluded, “The evidence
seems strong enough that people and physicians can use or recommend vitamin D
supplements to prevent or treat COVID-19.”12
Yet, I was
widely vilified and discredited in the media for bringing attention to vitamin
D’s potential for COVID-19. If this information had been allowed out, Rogan
wonders, how many deaths could have been prevented?13
“There was a
recent study that estimated somewhere in the range of 70% of all
hospitalizations and deaths from COVID could have been prevented with vitamin D
… I remember reading that article going, that is the most insane thing I’ve
ever seen in my life. And when did they know that this was true?
Because if
they just started handing out vitamin D — it’s readily available, so easy to
get, so easy to make, so cheap — they just handed out vitamin D to everybody.
How many
deaths could they have prevented? If that really is the case that high doses of
vitamin D, along with you know, it’s great with magnesium and vitamin K, but if
they educated people about nutrients, yes, about the value of nutrition, the
value of supplementation? Yes. How many people could have been saved? And how
cheaply could that have been done?”
Big Tech Gets Activists to Self-Censor
Both Rogan
and Brand moved platforms online due to censorship. In May 2020, Rogan signed
an exclusivity contract with Spotify for his “Joe
Rogan Experience Podcast.”14 Rogan received $100 million for
the deal; however, he said the move away from YouTube was intentional to fight
back against its censorship — and particularly YouTube’s decision to block
differing opinions on COVID-19, as he wanted to interview a variety of doctors
and experts about it.
The tech
giants use demonetization to get people to stop posting certain types of
content, without it appearing as outright censorship. Instead, it appears as
self-censorship. Rogan says:15
“Advertisements
that are on YouTube, those people that are spending all that money,
they can dictate what they want to be advertised on. And then they said, ‘Look,
I don’t want to be on anything that talks about COVID
or anything where they talk about Ukraine …
So OK. They just say, ‘Oh, well, we’ve got to stop people from
doing that. What’s the best way?’ Well, the best way to self-censor? Or how do
you get people to self-censor? You impact them economically. How do we do that
and not make it look like we’re censoring them? We give strikes, giving strikes
or demonetized.”
Brand
experienced the same issues on YouTube and switched to Rumble as a result:16
“When YouTube
was our primary platform, we would look at your [Rogan’s] content. All right,
that’s the title of this Rogan video and this is the content. OK? Well, we can
try that. And then we would get demonetized. And it becomes like a weird
algebra.
You change
this word, you change that word, you have to or you have, there’s certain things
you just can’t say. This is what Rumble fundamentally offered. They gave me a
good deal and the assurance that we’re not going to censor you.”
Take Action
and Embrace the Uncomfortable
Even when the
truth is heard by a sizeable minority, many don’t take action. But this is part
of enacting positive change, whether it be for freedom
and autonomy or your personal health.
“You have to
take the action, and it usually involves suffering,” Brand says. “And yeah,
that’s a hard thing to sell. People don’t want that. Now, they don’t want that
information that you can tell people there’s a quick
fix and an easy way. But whether it’s getting off drugs, becoming a standup
comedian or accomplishing stuff in a martial art, normally it means you
incrementally, day by day, hour by hour, session by session, you are going to
experience a degree of suffering.”17
While you may
feel powerless to fight back against globalist agendas and Big Tech censorship,
by embracing changes you can control, you can make a difference in your own
life and beyond. Rogan explains:18
“You don’t
realize that in embracing discomfort and forcing yourself to do something very
uncomfortable that you can control, like an ice bath, like a sauna, like a run,
like a workout, you are eliminating another form of discomfort. You can do
that. It’s one of the reasons why I’ve been able to mitigate all the stress and
issues that come with success and with fame.
Your body is
almost like a battery. And when you don’t use it, it’s almost like the juice
runs over the side and it becomes unmanageable. But when you use it, you have a
certain requirement that your body has to go through every day, because I think
we evolved in a very specific way. I think we evolved running away from
predators, protecting ourselves from invading tribes.
And this is
just a natural part of being a human being, every human being. And I think that
if you don’t give your body something to do it … [messes] with your brain, and
I think that’s where a lot of people’s anxiety comes from, a lot of people’s
insecurities.”

It’s been six weeks since I published
a report, based on
anonymous sourcing, naming President Joe Biden as the official who ordered the
mysterious destruction last September of Nord Stream 2, a new $11-billion
pipeline that was scheduled to double the volume of natural gas delivered from
Russia to Germany. The story gained traction in Germany and Western Europe, but
was subject to a near media blackout in the US. Two weeks ago, after a
visit by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Washington,
US and German intelligence agencies attempted to add to the blackout by feeding
the New York Times and
the German weekly Die Zeit false cover stories to counter the report
that Biden and US operatives were responsible for the pipelines’ destruction.
Press aides
for the White House and Central Intelligence Agency have consistently denied
that America was responsible for exploding the pipelines,
and those pro forma denials were more than enough for the White House press
corps. There is no evidence that any reporter assigned there has yet to ask the
White House press secretary whether Biden had done what any serious leader
would do: formally “task” the American intelligence community to conduct a deep
investigation, with all of its assets, and find out just who had done the deed
in the Baltic Sea. According to a source within the intelligence community, the
president has not done so, nor will he. Why not? Because he
knows the answer.
Sarah
Miller—an energy expert and an editor at Energy Intelligence, which publishes
leading trade journals—explained to me in an interview why the pipeline story
has been big news in Germany and Western Europe. “The destruction of the Nord
Stream pipelines in September led to a further surge of natural gas prices that
were already six or more times pre-crisis levels,” she said. “Nord Stream was
blown up in late September. German gas imports peaked a month later, in
October, at 10 times pre-crisis levels. Electricity prices across Europe were
pulled up, and governments spent as much as 800 billion euros,
by some estimates, shielding households and businesses from the impact. Gas
prices, reflecting the mild winter in Europe, have now fallen back to roughly a
quarter of the October peak, but they are still between two and three times
pre-crisis levels and are more than three times current US rates. Over the last
year, German and other European manufacturers closed their most
energy-intensive operations, such as fertilizer and glass production, and it’s unclear when, if ever, those plants will reopen. Europe
is scrambling to get solar and wind capacity in place, but it may not come soon
enough to save large chunks of German industry.” (Miller writes a blog on
Medium.)
In early March, President Biden
hosted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Washington.
The trip included only two public events—a brief pro forma exchange of
compliments between Biden and Scholz before the White
House press corps, with no questions allowed; and a CNN interview with Scholz by Fareed Zakaria, who did not touch on the pipeline allegations. The
chancellor had flown to Washington with no members of the German press on
board, no formal dinner scheduled, and the two world leaders were not slated to
conduct a press conference, as routinely happens at such high-profile meetings.
Instead, it was later reported that Biden and Scholz
had an 80-minute meeting, with no aides present for much of the time. There
have been no statements or written understandings made public since then by
either government, but I was told by someone with access to
diplomatic intelligence that there was a discussion of the pipeline
exposé and, as a result, certain elements in the Central Intelligence
Agency were asked to prepare a cover story in collaboration with German
intelligence that would provide the American and German press with an
alternative version for the destruction of Nord Stream 2. In the words of
the intelligence community, the agency was “to pulse the system” in an effort
to discount the claim that Biden had ordered the pipelines’ destruction.
At this point, it must be noted that
Chancellor Scholz, whether or not he was alerted of
the destruction of the pipeline in advance—still an open question—has clearly
been complicit since last fall in support of the Biden Administration’s
cover-up of its operation in the Baltic Sea.

Eight years ago, America’s most influential, private geostrategic analyst,
George Friedman, defined the current dominant U.S. divide et impera

“The
primordial interest of the United States is the relationship between Germany
and Russia, because united, they’re the only force that could threaten us,”
Friedman explained.
Russia’s main
interest has always been to have a neutral buffer zone in Eastern Europe. But
the U.S. purpose is to build a hostile cordon
sanitaire from the Baltic to the Black Sea, as
a definitive barrier separating Russia from Germany.
“Russia knows
it. Russia believes the United States intends to break the Russian Federation,”
said Friedman, jokingly adding that he thought the intention was not to kill
Russia but only to make it suffer.

St. Patrick’s Day, when
people of all national origins raise a glass and declare, “Today we’re all a
bit Irish!” This may be truer than we know. The Irish were driven to America by
debt, and they are leading the Western world in household debt today. The
London Daily Telegraph reported on March 13, 2008 that household debt in
Ireland has reached 190 percent of disposable income, the highest in the developed
world; and that the Irish banking system is suffering such acute strains from
the downturn in the housing market that it may have to nationalize its banks.1
The same may soon be happening in the United States, and for much the same
reasons.

The very
public failure of SVB (Silicon Valley Bank) is raising concerns of a renewed
wave of bank failures that threatens Western economies. The subtext is residual
fear that the earlier (mid-2000’s) bank crisis was never adequately addressed.
The very bankers who sank the banking system back then were handed trillions in
public largesse to cover their losses, but the system of Wall Street provision
of credit to fuel capitalism was never reconsidered. As then Treasury Secretary
Timothy Geithner put it, ‘the US doesn’t do
nationalization (of banks).’
Part of the
political calculus behind the earlier bailouts was the role of Wall Street in
support of American imperialism. Neoliberalism was
claimed in a constructive way to be ‘war by other means’ because it transferred
wealth from the economic periphery to the center without a shot being fired.
Trade was to replace warfare went the theory. That the US has been the most
capitalist and the most militaristic nation in the world over the last century
has done little to discredit this theory amongst true believers. These true
believers now run the US.

socialist online magazine named Tempest, and subsequently republished by
left-liberal magazines Portside, and Left Links, heaps contempt
upon said book and its authors.
I submitted a
version of this critique to Tempest, which declined to publish but
offered no explanation as to why. Draitser accuses
the authors, and also that part of the left which rejects his Russophobic analysis, as having committed an “abandonment
of every principle of internationalism, solidarity, and anti-colonial and
anti-imperial politics,” and he evidently imagines himself as the absolute
authority on such matters.

Bezalel Smotrich is one of the main
pillars in the current Israeli government. Although generally described as the
finance minister, his work is not confined to curbing inflation.
His broad
portfolio gives him partial responsibility for the defense ministry and a major
role in administering Israel’s occupation of the West
Bank and Gaza Strip.
A far-right
extremist, Smotrich has used his new platform to
incite violence. Just days after Israeli settlers carried out a pogrom in Huwwara – killing one Palestinian and inflicting huge
destruction on homes, businesses and vehicles – Smotrich
called for that
West Bank village to be “wiped out” by the Israeli state.
That racist
statement was denounced internationally. Ned Price, spokesperson for the US
State Department, called it “irresponsible”
and “repugnant.”
Smotrich is not the only member of the Israeli government who
supported the crimes by settlers in Huwwara.

Mahmoud Malakha had just arrived at
Gaza’s eastern boundary during the Great March of Return on 6 April 2018, when
an Israeli sniper shot him in the leg.
Malakha was one of tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza who
participated in the demonstrations at the Gaza-Israel boundary every Friday
from March 2018 to September 2019.
The protests
arose as an attempt to highlight the Palestinian right to return to the land
from which their parents or grandparents were forcefully expelled during the
1947-49 Nakba, when hundreds of thousands of
Palestinians were driven from their homes to make way for the establishment of
Israel.
In response to
the protests, the Israeli military deployed snipers, live bullets, rubber
bullets and tear gas canisters. Two hundred and fourteen Palestinians,
including 46 children, were
killed, and over 36,100 were wounded, among them nearly
8,800 children.
One Israeli
soldier was killed and seven others injured during the demonstrations.
Mahmoud, who is now 34, was transferred to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza,
where doctors learned that the bullet had severed an artery and destroyed some
bones.
With such
critical injuries, repeated attempts were made for Mahmoud
to be transferred to hospitals in Jerusalem or Egypt, both better able to
provide the care he needed.
But every
request for a travel permit was denied by the Israeli military for “security
reasons.” Israel controls who is allowed to travel in and out of Gaza, and
communicates its wishes with Egypt, with whom it maintains coordination over
the Rafah crossing.
“I underwent
nine surgeries a few months after the injury. They told me my leg had to be
amputated, but I refused, hoping I could get treatment,” said Mahmoud, a father of four.
He tried to
travel to Jordan with mediation from Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders). But he had to go
through the Beit Hanoun (Erez) checkpoint, and Israel demanded he undergo an
intelligence interrogation to pass. He was advised to refuse.
A number of
patients and their companions wind up in Israeli prison in
similar circumstances.

important victory for free speech and human rights in France, a court in the
eastern city of Nancy overturned a government order banning an event featuring
Salah Hammouri, the Palestinian French lawyer and
former political prisoner expelled
by Israeli occupation authorities from his
native Jerusalem in December.
The judge
called the order a serious and manifestly illegal violation of the right to
free speech.
The French
government ban on the event in Nancy – imposed at the instigation of the
Israeli embassy – was only the latest attack on Hammouri
in an ongoing campaign
to silence him by the administration of President
Emmanuel Macron and France’s Israel lobby.
The court’s
decision came down on Thursday evening just about an hour before the scheduled
start of the event, titled “A son of Jerusalem expelled from the land of his
birth by Israel” and co-sponsored by Association France Palestine Solidarité and Amnesty International France.
The event
went ahead without incident.

someone was trying to prove me right, a few days after I published the article “By

received a message from friends in Indonesia. The piece talks about the
seemingly unstoppable movement within majority Muslim and Arab countries
pushing towards normalizing relations with Israel. The message from my
Indonesian friends mentioned that Indonesia will be hosting the Under-20 world
football (soccer) championships this summer. The Israeli team qualified and
will be participating, and as of the time these words are being written, the
Indonesian government is permitting the Israeli team to enter the country and
play.
I was asked
to send a video urging the Indonesian government to refrain from allowing the
Israeli team to enter. The video has gone
viral in Indonesia and has been shown on television and mentioned in the local
press, adding to an ongoing campaign to ask the government to maintain the
country’s long-standing stance against Zionism.

Millions of
people hit the streets around the world when George Floyd was murdered by the
Minneapolis police in May 2020. We demanded criminal prosecution of the white
cop who choked Mr. Floyd and called for dramatic changes to U.S. police
departments to prevent the killings of innocent Black men.
What changes?
Reforms have become cliches – hiring police officers
who look like the communities they patrol, Black police chiefs, police review
boards, court oversight, restrictions on chokeholds, eliminating no-knock
warrants, limitations on the use of “non-lethal” police weapons and more.
On Jan. 7,
2023, five Memphis police officers beat and kicked Tyre
Nichols to death. Similar to 46-year old George Floyd, Tyre
Nichols was a Black man, 29, unarmed, and guilty, at most, of
trivial criminal conduct; police claimed that they stopped him for
reckless driving and that he tried to run away from them. The four officers
charged in the Floyd case were multiracial working under a Black police chief.
In Mr. Nichols’ case, the five cops who murdered him were Black, working in a
police department with a Black woman chief.
Oakland,
California, has been under federal court oversight since February 2003. A few
weeks ago, Oakland’s new mayor, Sheng Thao, fired Police Chief LeRonne
Armstrong for his failure to discipline an officer who had been leading a crime
suppression campaign in Oakland’s Chinatown. Armstrong, a Black Oakland native,
was the latest in a series of chiefs who seemed unable to hold subordinates
responsible for their own misconduct.

An item in Ezra Klein’s NYT column yesterday
really grabbed by attention. Ezra cited a Wall Street
Journal column that
claimed that the Federal Reserve Board’s stress tests would not have detected
Silicon Valley Bank’s (SVB) problems, because its stress
tests did not consider interest rate risk.
This struck
me as close to crazy. How could a stress test not consider interest rate risk?
I recalled the stress tests that the Fed and Treasury performed very publicly
in March of 2009, in the middle of the financial crisis. These tests did not
consider interest rate risk for the simple reason that, at that point in time,
soaring interest rates seemed about as likely as a Martian invasion.
I had not
been following the Fed’s stress tests since that time, but I assumed that they
did adjust them for circumstances. I recall back in 2002, when I first became
concerned about the housing bubble, being on a radio show with the chief
economist from Fannie Mae. He assured me that they could not have serious
problems with a decline in housing prices, since they regularly stress test
their assets. Their tests included a large rise in interest rates. (When the
bubble finally burst, Fannie Mae, along with Freddie Mac, collapsed in the
summer of 2008 and have been in conservatorship ever since.)
Anyhow, this
exchange led me to believe that regulators applied some common sense to their
stress test exercises and examined how bank assets would fare in all bad, but
plausible, circumstances. In the years 2020-21, when 10-year Treasury rates
were at times flirting with 1.0 percent, a sharp rise in interest rates had to
be seen as a plausible, even if unlikely, possibility.

Time, US Seeks to Sabotage a Russo-Ukraine Negotiated Peace

As Ukraine
sinks into collapse from Russia’s invasion the US provoked, the death and
destruction has made no dent on Uncle Sam’s inhumane conscience.
A year ago
when NATO member Turkey neared a 15 point negotiated settlement, the US and UK
each sent a top official to Kyiv not to request, but demand that Ukraine
President Zelensky walk away to keep fighting. That
grotesque demand led to over 100,000 unnecessary Ukraine deaths over the next
year. A third of the Ukraine economy vanished. Six million left Ukraine and
another six million relocated.
The US didn’t
blow up a negotiated peace to inflict this carnage on Ukraine. They simply
wanted, in the words of US war emissary, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, to
keep the war going to “weaken Russia”. That was an abomination that should
shame every peace loving American.
Today begins
US sabotage 2.0 of a new Russo Ukraine peace proposal. Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Moscow to meet with Russian
President Putin and virtually with Ukraine President Zelensky
to possibly negotiate peace. War weary Zelensky
expressed openness to Xi’s 12 point peace proposal.
President
Biden should be thrilled that peace in the war may be at hand. Instead he’s
apoplectic. His national security spokesman John Kirby offered,
“We don’t
support calls for a ceasefire right now. We certainly don’t support calls for a
ceasefire that would be called for by the PRC in a meeting in Moscow that would
simply benefit Russia.”
Once again
it’s not about ending a war destroying Ukraine as a functioning state. And God
forbid peace be brokered by our other arch enemy China
in America’s 21stcentury Cold War that could quickly go nuclear. Outside of the US and Australia, the rest of the world in cheering
on China’s peace efforts. Even European NATO countries are likely tho silently on board. They’re not thrilled about the US
blowing up the Nord Steam pipeline and tripling their energy costs to degrade
Russia.
By preventing
a March, 2022 peace agreement, the US blew a chance for an agreement that would
have reverted to the pre-invasion territorial lines. An easily prevented year
of war means any new peace agreement will likely see the annexation of the
Donbas provinces and the Ukrainian oblasts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
Once again
the US has overplayed its hand ….
