Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu had often boasted about the readiness of his army to deal with, and
to eliminate all threats to Israel’s ‘security’.
The
Israeli military, too, has contributed to the Israeli hasbara
that Tel Aviv would be able to face several threats at all fronts, from Gaza,
to the West Bank, to Lebanon, and Syria.
But the
Hamas attack at numerous Israeli targets on Saturday, October 5, at precisely
6:00 am Palestine time, proved him utterly and humiliatingly wrong. Neither
Netanyahu, nor his army were in fact able to face a
single Palestinian group, operating alone, and under siege.
It will
take time for all of this to sink in among Israeli leaders, military brass,
media, and society. For now, however, Netanyahu is desperate to show that
Israel remains a powerful country and a regional power that deserves its
often-touted status of having an ‘invincible’ army.
But all
his options are nearly impossible.

I write as we watch the news of
Palestinian fighters from the besieged and starved Gaza strip having seized the
initiatives from the Israeli daily incursions on Palestinian camps, and towns
murdering civilians. Israeli murders this year have reached more than 250
Palestinians, including 47 children. This is in addition to the desecration of
Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and other occupied Palestinian
communities.
Gaza has
endured a harsh economic blockade for more than 18 years. Palestinians are
lynched at the hand of the illegal ultra-Jewish colonizers in cities like Hawara and Hebron. The burning of Palestinian cars, homes,
and business, under the official protection of the Israeli occupying army and
direct support from Israeli racist ministers have become a daily occurrence.
Additionally,
more than 5,000 Palestinians continue to languish in Israeli jails. The racist
Israeli government has introduced new harsh measures, including extended isolation,
limited family contact, restricted access to medical treatment, etc. This does
not even account for the 1,200 individuals held under administrative detention,
which means imprisoned without charge.
The
international community’s silence has granted Israel impunity and has
perpetuated the normalization of the Israeli apartheid occupation, imposing a
way of life that Palestinians are forced to endure and tolerate.
This
background sets the stage for Palestinians to, for perhaps the first time, to
grab the initiative from the Israeli occupation forces by raiding the prison
posts that kept Gaza under blockade, in the world’s largest open-air prison,
for nearly two decades.
Keeping
that in mind, it is disheartening to witness the biased coverage by American TV
networks and their one-sided pundits, rendering FOX, CNN, and MSNBC
indistinguishable in their hypocritical handling of today’s events as well as
the 75-year Israeli occupation and the dispossession of Palestinian land.
Alas,
American/Western media and political pundits won’t hesitate describing the
Palestinian retaliation against the Gaza economic blockade, the murdering of
Palestinians, the defilement of holly sites, the building of Jewish only
colonies on illegally occupied land, as merely a “terrorist” attack, and
Israeli prisoners taken to Gaza as “hostages.”
Meanwhile,
the same media industrial complex never ascribed the term hostage for
Palestinian, men, women and children taken half naked in the middle of the
night from their bedrooms by the Israeli army. The pundits in CNN, FOX, and
MSNBC never called the 1200 non charged Palestinians
held indefinitely (under 6 months renewable sentence) as hostages.

What might this war—started with the IDF as “unprepared” as the

lawmaker in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party calling for an even worse Nakba than the ethnic cleansing
of Palestine in 1948.
Two-thirds
of Gaza’s population of more than two million are refugees from lands in
Israel, including those around the periphery of the Strip, that were purged of
their Palestinian residents before, during and in the months following the
establishment of the state of Israel.
Israel
reported 300 fatalities at the close of the first day of what could be a
prolonged battle far bloodier than the numerous cross-boundary confrontations
between the Israeli military and resistance groups in Gaza over the past two
decades.
Around 230
fatalities were reported as a result of Israeli strikes on Gaza and six
Palestinians, including a child, were shot and killed in the West Bank on
Saturday.
At least
one Israeli brigade commander was reported killed and an Israeli ambulance
driver was reportedly shot to death.
Some 1,500
Israelis were hospitalized, with thousands of rockets fired from Gaza reaching
as far as Jerusalem. As many as 1,000 Palestinian fighters infiltrated Israel and seized control of
communities around the periphery of the coastal enclave.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 7, the
Palestinian resistance in the besieged Gaza Strip launched an unprecedented
surprise multi-prong attack on Israel, including firing a barrage of rockets
toward Israeli territory while simultaneously carrying out a ground offensive
into nearby Israeli towns which breached the Israeli Gaza barrier and
overwhelmed surrounding Israeli military posts.
As of
12:30 local time, it was reported that thousands of rockets had been fired from
Gaza into Israel and that Israeli air forces had targeted multiple areas across
the Gaza Strip with airstrikes. Medical authorities in Gaza report that over
190 Palestinians had been killed and over 1,600 were injured so far. Israeli
emergency services report at least 100 Israeli casualties,
and dozens of other unconfirmed reports indicate the casualties to be much
higher. According to Al Jazeera, 57 Israelis, including military personnel,
have allegedly been captured and taken into Gaza.
While
Hamas reported firing more than 5,000 rockets into Israel, including long-range
rockets, the Israeli army claimed just over 2,200 rockets
were fired into Israel Saturday morning.
At 11:47
a.m. local time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel was “at war,” vowing that “the enemy” would pay a price
“like they have never known before.”
The
Israeli army confirmed that Palestinian fighters had successfully breached the
Gaza barrier in “several places,” and that dozens of fighters had infiltrated
into Israeli territory by land, air (unconfirmed videos showed alleged
Palestinian fighters descending into an Israeli town via hang glider), and by
sea, Israeli media reported.
The
operation began at around 6:30 a.m. local time as Palestinians in Gaza woke up
to the sound of rocket fire leaving the strip toward Israel. As the sound of
rocket fire rang across the strip, many Gazans
flooded into the streets and took to social media, unaware of what was
happening.
Close to
one hour after the rocket fire began, shocking photos and videos began
circulating on social media, showing convoys of armed Palestinian fighters
breaking through the Israeli barrier along the Gaza border and infiltrating
Israeli towns and military bases in the areas close to the strip.
Unprecedented
videos showed Palestinian militants patrolling Israeli towns in armored cars
and vehicles, while other videos showed the fighters seemingly casually
strolling around the neighborhoods as Israeli police and security forces were
yet to respond.
According
to Israeli media, Israelis in southern towns surrounding Gaza were calling into
Army radio and Israeli television channels, saying that fighters had been
roaming around their towns and entering buildings for more than two hours while
residents were still awaiting a response from Israeli forces.
At 7:50
a.m., the general commander of the Hamas military wing, Muhammed
al-Deif, released a recorded statement declaring
a “comprehensive war” across occupied Palestine.
“We
announce the starting of the Operation of the ‘Flood of al-Aqsa.’
We also announce that the first attack that targeted the enemy’s locations and
military fortifications and airports during the first 20 minutes exceeded 5,000
rockets and shells,” the statement said.
Al-Deif’s statement said the operation was a response to
Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners and the continued attacks and
violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which have
seen an increase in recent days as large numbers of Israeli settlers raided the
compound during the Jewish holiday season.
“The
occupation forces invade our towns in the West Bank every day, they storm
people’s homes while they’re safe, they kill, wound, demolish, and detain
Palestinians. Hundreds of Palestinians were killed and injured this year. At
the same time, the occupation replaced our people and took their land by force
to build settlements,” al-Deif said, adding that “the
criminal Israeli siege is ongoing in Gaza.”
“Amid all
the Israeli crimes and violations, and their violation of international laws,
with the full support of the US and the Western countries accompanied by
international silence, we have decided to put a halt to this state of affairs.
The enemy must understand that the time of carrying out violations with
impunity is over,” the statement said.
Shortly
before 11 a.m. local time, the Israeli military announced it was launching
Operation Iron Swords on Gaza. Within minutes, Israeli airstrikes began
striking targets across the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Ministry of Health
reported at least one Palestinian was killed and several others were wounded
when an Israeli airstrike hit the Indonesian Hospital in the northern Gaza
Strip.

I awoke this morning to the dawn of a new era.
Today, on the 50th anniversary of the 1973 war, Palestinian
resistance fighters in Gaza launched an aerial and land attack on Israeli
settlers, killing at least 40 people and taking many soldiers and civilians
hostage. The barrier fence between Gaza and 1948 was dismantled. Palestinians
currently control the Gaza checkpoint at Erez and
continue to occupy three Israeli settlements.
The leadership of the operations said that the attacks are a
response to the lack of accountability for Israel’s continuing war crimes
against the Palestinian people and to dismantle the last apartheid regime in
the world.
While the
Israeli regime today declared war on the Palestinians, it is vital to remember
that Israel has been carrying out unspeakable atrocities against the
Palestinian people for over 70 years and has sustained a brutal blockade and
siege on Gaza, imprisoning over 2 million Palestinians. No cage goes
unchallenged.

One would have to be almost hopelessly naïve to buy the
corporate state media line that the Hamas invasion yesterday morning was an
Israeli “intelligence failure.”
Mossad
is one of, if not the, most powerful intelligence agencies on the planet. It routinely shares
intelligence, furthermore, with the “Five Eyes” intelligence services.
It has its
tentacles deep inside of every ally and foe of import.
Its spies
are littered across the Gaza Strip, which is an effective open-air prison into
which goods do not flow but for the blessing of the Israeli state. The Gaza
Strip is arguably the most heavily surveilled
geographic area on Earth.
The Hamas
invasion of Southern Israel yesterday was an operation involving tens of
thousands of operatives, at least, across land, sea, and air, using all manner
of equipment and weaponry – drones, thousands of rockets, countless firearms,
and even bulldozers that were positioned to knock down Israeli fencing.

is no longer contemplating “Separation” or “Apartheid”. There is no longer
a “Two State Solution”.
The October 7, 2023 Declaration of
War against Palestine consists in invading and annexing Gaza and the West
Bank, while excluding Palestinians from their homeland. It’s a crime against
humanity.

The Gaza strip is a perfect realization of the
Israeli vision of “separation”. Surrounded with electric fences and army posts,
completely sealed off the outside world, Gaza has become a huge prison.
About one third of its land was confiscated for the
7,000 Israeli settlers living there (and their defense array), while over a
million Palestinians are crowded in the remaining areas of the prison.
With no work or sources of income, about 80% of its
residents depend, for their living, on UNRWA, or contributions from Arab states
and charity organizations. Now Israel is considering the imprisonment there of
families of suicide bombers from the West Bank (1). As a senior Israeli analyst
stated, Gaza can now serve as “the penal colony” of Israel its “devils island, Alcatraz”.

The Gaza
Strip is under quarantine since 2007, subjected to a commercial and naval
blockade at the arbitrary discretion of Israel. It has been the target of three
Israeli military invasions in 2009, 2012, and 2014. In the span of 22 days
(December 27, 2008, to January 18, 2009), 1434 Palestinians were killed,
including 1259 civilians and 288 children. Between November 14 and 21, 2012,
103 Palestinians were killed, including 30 children. In less than two months
(July 8 to August 26, 2014), 1462 civilians were killed, including 551
children. During this latest offensive, 136 schools were destroyed or damaged,
15 hospitals and 43 healthcare centers were destroyed. Nearly 20,000 homes were
bombed, leaving 105,000 people homeless. In May 2021, the clashes resulted in
at least 232 deaths on the Palestinian side, including 65 children, and 12
deaths in Israel, including a six-year-old child and a 16-year-old girl. The
United Nations estimates there are 1600 orphans in the Gaza Strip.
Richard
Falk, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the
Occupied Territories, estimated that 40% of the male population of Gaza had
experienced Israeli prisons. Administrative detention in Israel allows for an
accusation for six months, renewable, without any charges.
More than
50% of young Palestinians in this enclave are unemployed, making them easy
recruits for the Hamas military forces. The United Nations Relief and Works
Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in 2000 concerned about 80,000 people, now
counts more than 800,000 (out of a population of 2 million). According to a
report by the international children’s rights NGO Save The Children, titled
‘Trapped’ and published in June 2022, four out of five children in Gaza suffer
from depression and anxiety. 80% of the population in Gaza lives below the
poverty line.
“Swift action is needed to prevent outbreaks
of violence between Israelis and Palestinians and to avert an imminent food
crisis,” said with no avail Tor Wennesland,
the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, to
the Security Council on May 24, 2023.
The
victory of Hamas in the 2006 elections is inseparable from the radicalization
of Palestinian society, in the face of the Israeli blockade, as was its
creation in December 1987 at the beginning of the first Intifada. Hamas has a
dense network of charitable associations within a humiliated and helpless
population. The main leaders of Hamas have been all assassinated by the
Israelis. The current leaders have since been refugees in Qatar. The Chief of
the Israeli Air Force boasted to the press of having overseen between 80 and
100 extrajudicial targeted assassinations, with a “90% success rate.”
Since the
Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, a so-called “military
exclusion” buffer zone ranging from 300 meters to 1.5 kilometers in depth
covers 20% of the territory and hinders 35% of cultivable land, far from the
1949 armistice line (“Green Line”) originally separating Israel and Gaza. Since
that date, there have been more than twelve offensives against this territory
with a heavy human toll: on the Palestinian side, 7600 killed, including 2800
civilians; on the Israeli side, 123 killed, including 23 civilians.
With the
Hamas military offensive on October 8, 2023, this toll will considerably
increase. And for what result?
The best
guarantee of Israel’s security is the restored dignity of the Palestinian
populations and not, as declared by the Minister of the Interior in Netanyahu’s
government, Eli Yishai, during the bombing of the
Gaza Strip, to “return Gaza to
medieval times.”

We have finally reached a point in
the advancement of our technology where we no longer can believe anything we
see or hear. I mean, we can if we want to, but we can also choose not to,
because the presentation of anything in a photograph, a video, or an audio
recording, is no longer reliable evidence of reality.
Soon we
will not be able to rely on what we see right in front of our face when we are
taking a walk in what we believe to be the real world. In fact, we don’t have
to wait for this, it is already here.
Holographic
technology can already deceive us into believing something we see occurring in
our own perceived reality. Many say the planes flying into the World Trade
Center were holographs. Maybe they were. The technology probably exists to do this—although this link goes to a video of flying whales in Dubai,
which is not an example of existing technology (apparently it is just a run of
the mill CGI video), but it is coming, and you don’t even have to hold your
breath.
Once we
all know this is possible (many still believe it is not) then we will trust
nothing to be authentic. In fact, the very word “authentic” will have no
meaning. We will then clearly be living in a dream, not able to tell the
difference between the dream and the dreamer.
Maybe,
indeed, we have always been a product of the dream, and the Matrix of movie
fame has always been reality.
So, what
is reality? . . . .

many American law firms, investment companies, and banks were deeply involved
in America’s investment offensive in Germany, among them the renowned Wall
Street law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, and the banks J. P. Morgan and Dillon,
Read and Company, as well as the Union Bank of New York, owned by Brown
Brothers & Harriman.
The Union
Bank was intimately linked with the financial and industrial empire of German
steel magnate Thyssen, whose financial support

Documented by Dr. Pauwels,
it must be understood that without the support of Standard Oil of New Jersey
(Exxon) –which delivered oil to Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1945–, the Third
Reich would not have been able to wage World War
II: more specifically without a steady delivery of gasoline,
Nazi Germany would not have been able launch Operation Barbarossa
against the Soviet Union.

In the United States, World War II
is generally known as “the good war.”
In contrast to some of America’s admittedly bad
wars, such as the near-genocidal Indian Wars and the vicious conflict in
Vietnam, World War II is widely celebrated as a “crusade” in which the US
fought unreservedly on the side of democracy, freedom, and justice against
dictatorship.
No wonder President George W. Bush likes to compare
his ongoing “war against terrorism” with World War II, suggesting that America
is once again involved on the right side in an apocalyptic conflict between
good and evil. Wars, however, are never quite as black-and-white as Mr. Bush
would have us believe, and this also applies to World War II. America certainly
deserves credit for its important contribution to the hard-fought victory that
was ultimately achieved by the Allies. But the role of corporate America in the
war is hardly synthesized by President Roosevelt’s claim that the US was the
“arsenal of democracy.” When Americans landed in Normandy in June 1944 and
captured their first German trucks, they discovered that these vehicles were
powered by engines produced by American firms such as Ford and General Motors.
1 Corporate America, it turned out, had also been serving as the arsenal of
Nazism.
Fans of the Führer
Mussolini
enjoyed a great deal of admiration in corporate America from the moment he came
to power in a coup that was hailed stateside as “a fine young revolution.” 2
Hitler, on the other hand, sent mixed signals. Like their German counterparts,
American businessmen long worried about the intentions and the methods of this
plebeian upstart, whose ideology was called National Socialism, whose party
identified itself as a workers’ party, and who spoke ominously of bringing
about revolutionary change. 3 Some high-profile leaders of corporate America,
however, such as Henry Ford liked and admired the Führer
at an early stage. 4
Other
precocious Hitler-admirers were press lord Randolph Hearst and Irénée Du Pont, head of the Du Pont trust, who according to
Charles Higham, had already “keenly followed the
career of the future Führer in the 1920s” and
supported him financially. 5
Eventually,
most American captains of industry learned to love the Führer.
It is often hinted that fascination with Hitler was a matter of personalities,
a matter of psychology. Authoritarian personalities supposedly could not help
but like and admire a man who preached the virtues of the “leadership
principle” and practised what he preached first in
his party and then in Germany as a whole.
Although
he cites other factors as well, it is essentially in such terms that Edwin
Black, author of the otherwise excellent book IBM and the Holocaust, explains
the case of IBM chairman Thomas J. Watson, who met Hitler on a number of
occasions in the 1930s and became fascinated with Germany’s authoritarian new
ruler. But it is in the realm of political economy, not psychology, that one
can most profitably understand why corporate America embraced Hitler.
In the
1920s many big American corporations enjoyed sizeable investments in Germany.
IBM established a German subsidiary, Dehomag, before
World War I; in the 1920s General Motors took over Germany’s largest car
manufacturer, Adam Opel AG; and Ford founded a branch plant, later known as the
Ford-Werke, in Cologne. Other US firms contracted
strategic partnerships with German companies. Standard Oil of New Jersey —

the early 1930s, as the Great Depression hit Germany particularly hard.
Production and profits dropped precipitously, the political situation was
extremely unstable, there were constant strikes and street battles between
Nazis and Communists, and many feared that the country was ripe for a “red”
revolution like the one that had brought the Bolsheviks to power in Russia in
1917.
However,
backed by the power and money of German industrialists and bankers such as Thyssen, Krupp, and Schacht, Hitler came to power in
January 1933, and not only the political but also the socio-economic situation
changed drastically.
Soon the
German subsidiaries of American corporations were profitable again. Why? After
Hitler came to power American business leaders with assets in Germany found to
their immense satisfaction that his so-called revolution respected the
socio-economic status quo.
The Führer’s
Teutonic brand of fascism, like every other variety of fascism, was reactionary
in nature, and extremely useful for capitalists’ purposes. Brought to power by Germany’s leading businessmen and bankers, Hitler
served the interests of his “enablers.” His first major initiative was to
dissolve the labour unions and to throw the
Communists, and many militant Socialists, into prisons and the first
concentration camps, which were specifically set up to accommodate the
overabundance of left-wing political prisoners.
This
ruthless measure not only removed the threat of revolutionary change — embodied
by Germany’s Communists — but also emasculated the German working class and
transformed it into a powerless “mass of followers” (Gefolgschaft),
to use Nazi terminology, which was unconditionally put at the disposal of their
employers, the Thyssens and Krupps.
Most, if not all firms in Germany, including American branch plants,
eagerly took advantage of this situation and cut labour
costs drastically. The Ford-Werke, for example,
reduced labour costs from fifteen per cent of
business volume in 1933 to only eleven per cent in 1938. (Research Findings,

Coca-Cola’s
bottling plant in Essen increased its profitability considerably because, in
Hitler’s state, workers “were little more than serfs forbidden not only to
strike, but to change jobs,” driven “to work harder [and] faster” while their
wages “were deliberately set quite low.” 7

“When 80 percent of US generals go
to work for arms makers”

At a time when the Pentagon budget
is soaring towards $1 trillion per year and debates about how to respond to the
challenges posed by Russia and China are front and center, it is more important
than ever to make an independent assessment of the best path forward.
Ideally,
this would involve objective analysis by unbiased experts and policy makers
grounded in a vigorous public conversation about how best to defend the
country. But more often than not, special interests override the national
interest in decisions on how much to spend on the Pentagon, and how those funds
should be allocated.
One
practice that introduces bias into the shaping of defense policy is the
revolving door between the U.S. government and the weapons industry. The
movement of retired senior officials from the Pentagon and the military
services into the arms industry is a longstanding practice that raises serious
questions about the appearance and reality of conflicts of interest. Mostly
because employing well-connected ex-military officers can give weapons makers enormous, unwarranted influence over the process of
determining the size and shape of the Pentagon budget.
A 2021 report by the Government Accountability Office found that 1,700 senior
government officials had taken positions in the arms industry over a five year
period, an average of well over 300 per year. And a new report from our organization, the Quincy Institute for Responsible
Statecraft, found that this practice is particularly pronounced among top
generals and admirals. In the past five years, over 80% of retired four-star
generals and admirals (26 of 32) went on to work in the arms sector as board
members, advisers, lobbyists, or consultants.
For
example, Boeing recruited the former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson
following his retirement from government service. The admiral joined the
company’s board of directors within two months of his retirement ceremony.
Boeing was the Pentagon’s sixth largest contractor in Fiscal Year 2022, with
total prime contracts awards amounting to $14.8 billion.

the White House, his 2030 UN Sustainable Development Project is
being carried out in coordination with Klaus Schwab and the
World Economic Forum (WEF), which represents the interests of the global
financial establishment. Needless to say, Big Money call

While reading the latest news of the war in Ukraine today, I
was reminded of a song by Emma’s Revolution. The name of the song is Who
Lies? It asks four fundamental questions that can be applied to just about any
war:
“Who
Lies? Who Dies? Who Pays? Who Profits?”

Veterans For Peace certainly knows who lies. Our members have been lied into multiple wars, from Korea and Vietnam to Iraq,
Afghanistan and beyond. Who lied? The President lied. Our
political leaders lied. The newspapers and television lied. Even
religious, academic and municipal leaders encouraged us to fight and die in a
war based on lies.

And we
most definitely know who died. 58,000 US soldiers – mostly poor and working
class – died for lies in Vietnam, while we killed over 3 million Vietnamese men,
women and children – mostly poor peasants. Thousands of US soldiers were killed
and wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, while hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and
Afghanis died.
Our
soldiers continue to die. PTSD and Moral Injury have led to more soldiers taking their own
lives than those who died on the battlefield.

Who
Pays? We all pay – our precious tax dollars, which are intended to provide essential public
services like healthcare and housing – are stolen from us to pay for war.
Just
one-third of what we are wasting on death in Ukraine could end homelessness in
the US, or even
end world hunger. But that is not where our money is going.

And now
the final question, Who Profits? The weapons
manufacturers like Boeing and Raytheon reap obscene profits. As do banks and huge
financial institutions like Blackrock and Vanguard, which are heavily invested
in the military, in high tech, and in media.

When the eastern Ukrainian city of
Lyman was occupied for five months last year, Valentyna
Tkach and Tetiana Potapenko stayed behind. They volunteered to help their
vulnerable neighbours. They cared for elderly
residents, contacted the Russian occupation administration to ask for food and
coal for them, and even buried dead bodies.
Now, both
women are in detention, having been accused by Ukraine’s Secret Service of
collaboration with Russia – a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Tkach and Potapenko
were volunteers long before the occupation. Since Soviet times, Lyman’s
population has self-organised to better coordinate
with local authorities. Residents of each of the city’s ‘microdistricts’ nominate individuals, who are usually women and are known as street
attendants (vulychni),
to maintain order and liaise with the mayor’s office on their behalf.
This work is coordinated by a head of
the neighbourhood, who is elected by residents. When
Russia captured Lyman, the local leaders in Tkach and
Potapenko’s microdistricts
fled, and the women stepped up to take on their roles.
Today, they believe they are being
punished for helping others. As part of a series of stories on collaboration
trials in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian news outlet Graty met both
women in April, while they were in pre-trial
detention. Below, openDemocracy publishes an abridged
translation of Graty’s feature.
War enters
Lyman
At the end of
April 2022, Valentyna Tkach,
63, and her husband took shelter in the cellar of their house in north Lyman.
It soon became clear they had been right to hide: Russian forces broke through
the city and the shelling didn’t stop. Electricity, water and gas supplies to
the city were cut. Stores were forced to close and many people’s food supplies
dwindled.
Tkach’s street, like much of north Lyman, was mainly private
one-story houses, often home to elderly women who refused to leave when the war
started. “They said: ‘We grew up here, our children and grandchildren grew up
here. We’re not going anywhere. We will live in tents, in our vegetable
gardens,’” Tkach explained. . . . .

Did you know

“investment” truly symbolizes the moral bankruptcy of conventional discourse in
the U.S. political mainstream. Instead of war being a calamity, a catastrophe,
a realm of death and destruction, dare I say even a mortal sin of grievous
evil, we’re told that instead it’s an investment that’s paying dividends,
especially in that growth stock known as Ukraine.

The quest for

On Aug. 28,
Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks chose the occasion of a three-day
conference organized by the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), the
arms industry’s biggest trade group, to announce the
“Replicator Initiative.” Among other things, it would involve producing “swarms
of drones” that could hit thousands of targets in China on short notice. Call
it the full-scale launching of techno-war.
Her speech to
the assembled arms makers was yet another sign that the military-industrial
complex (MIC) President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned us about more than 60 years
ago is still alive, all too well, and taking a new turn. Call it the MIC for
the digital age.
Hicks described the
goal of the Replicator Initiative this way:
“To stay
ahead [of China], we’re going to create a new state of the art… leveraging attritable, autonomous systems in all domains which are
less expensive, put fewer people at risk, and can be changed, upgraded, or
improved with substantially shorter lead times… We’ll counter the PLA’s [People’s
Liberation Army’s] with mass of our own, but ours will be harder to plan for,
harder to hit, and harder to beat.”
Think of it
as artificial intelligence (AI) goes to war — and oh, that word “attritable,” a term that doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue
or mean much of anything to the average taxpayer, is pure Pentagonese
for the ready and rapid replaceability of systems
lost in combat. Let’s explore later whether the Pentagon and the arms industry
are even capable of producing the kinds of cheap, effective, easily replicable
techno-war systems Hicks touted in her speech. First, though, let me focus on
the goal of such an effort: confronting China.

Combatting Russia to the last Ukrainian was always an odious
strategy, writes Chas W. Freeman in this expansive overview.
I want to
speak to you tonight about Ukraine – what has happened to it and why, how it is
likely to emerge from the ordeal to which great power rivalry has subjected it;
and what we can learn from this. I do so with some trepidation and a
warning to this audience. My talk, like the conflict in Ukraine, is a

Washington have worked overtime to ensure that we take passionate sides,
believe what we want to believe and condemn anyone who questions the narrative
we have internalized.
No one not on
the front lines has any real idea of what has been happening in this war.
What we know is only what our governments and other supporters of the war want
us to know. And they have developed the bad habit of inhaling their own
propaganda, which guarantees delusional policies.
Every
government that is a party to the Ukraine War — Kiev, Moscow, Washington and
other NATO capitals — has been guilty of various degrees of self-deception and
blundering misfeasance. The consequences for all have been dire.
For Ukraine, they have been catastrophic. A radical rethinking of policy

Once
denounced by Zelensky as a “criminal,” gun runner Serhiy Pashinksy has become the
top private supplier of arms to Ukraine. Eyewitness testimony has fingered Pashinsky as the architect of a bloody false flag operation
which propelled the 2014 Maidan coup and plunged the
country into civil war.
Years before
emerging as Kiev’s top private weapons trafficker, ex-legislator Serhiy Pashinsky played a key
role in the 2014 US-backed coup which toppled Ukraine’s democratically-elected
president and set the stage for a devastating civil war. Though
the notoriously corrupt former Ukrainian parliamentarian was condemned by
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
as a “criminal” as recently as 20 19, a lengthy exposé by the New York Times has now identified Pashinsky as the Ukrainian government’s “biggest private
arms supplier.”
Perhaps
predictably, the report makes no mention of evidence implicating Pashinsky in the 2014 massacre of 70 anti-government
protesters in Kiev’s Maidan Square, an incident which
pro-Western forces used to consummate their coup d’etat
against then-President Viktor Yanukovych.
In an August
12 report on Ukraine’s new weapons-sourcing strategy, the New York Times
alleged that “out of desperation,” Kiev had no option but to adopt increasingly
amoral tactics. The shift, they say, has driven up prices of lethal imports at
an exponential rate, “and added layer upon layer of profit-making” for the
benefit of unscrupulous speculators like Pashinsky.
According to
the Times, the strategy is simple: Pashinksy “buys
and sells grenades, artillery shells and rockets through a trans-European
network of middlemen,” then “sells them, then buys them again and sells them
once more”:
“With each
transaction, prices rise – as do the profits of Mr. Pashinsky’s
associates – until the final buyer, Ukraine’s military, pays the most,” the
Times explained, adding that while using multiple brokers may technically be
legal, “it is a time-tested way to inflate profits.”
As the
seemingly endless supply of cash from Western taxpayers provides a bonanza for
arms manufacturers such as Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, it similarly benefits
war profiteers like Pashinsky. His company, Ukrainian
Armored Technology, “reported its best year ever last year, with sales totaling
more than $350 million” — a whopping 12,500% increase from its $2.8 million in
sales the year before the war.
Pashinsky is not the only racketeer benefitting from the
elimination of anti-corruption measures in wartime Ukraine. Several suppliers
previously placed on an official blacklist after they “ripped off the military”
are now free to sell again, according to the Times investigation. The outlet
downplayed this as an unfortunate, but ultimately necessary measure.

headquartered in the palatial residence of the imperial expansionist Prime

adjoining mansions.
(In 2022 it also, despite all the petroleum bungs, received its largest
grant from the MAVA
Foundation, a Swiss environmental charity,
which was that year closing down and disbursing all its funds).
So Chatham
House is a pretty infallible guide as to what those who control western
“democracies” are thinking. And when it comes to Ukraine, what they are
thinking is terrifying.

Russia”.

stake is the engineered economic and social destruction of sovereign nation
states. The creditors are there to “pick up the pieces” and “appropriate real
wealth”.
The second
part of this article will focus on the NeoCons’
agenda to “privatize countries” on behalf of the financial establishment.
The
privatization of Ukraine as an
impoverished derelict Nation State has already commenced via the creation of
the Ukraine Reconstruction Bank (URB) by BlackRock
and JPMorgan.
The Danger of Nuclear War
The use of

If an experimental vaccine were to damage the heart and
immune system in a significant number of individuals who received it, it is
possible that it could lead to a decline in the overall population size.
This could occur for several reasons.
- First, damage to the heart could lead to an
increase in cardiovascular diseases, which are a leading cause of
mortality worldwide. This could result in a higher number of deaths among
individuals who received the vaccine.
- Second, damage to the immune system could leave
individuals more susceptible to other infections and diseases, which could

where powerful institutions and Governments have coerced millions of people
into getting an experimental Covid-19 vaccine that causes all of the ill-fated
effects mentioned above.

A new
scientific report challenges the idea that COVID-19 vaccines have prevented
deaths after researchers assessed all-cause mortality in 17 countries and found
COVID-19 vaccines did not have any beneficial effect on reducing mortality.
Instead, researchers found that unprecedented peaks in high all-cause mortality
in each country—especially among the elderly population when COVID-19 vaccines
were deployed—coincided with the rollout of third and fourth booster doses.
The report,
published Sept. 17 by Correlation Research in the Public Interest (pdf) (not yet peer-reviewed), quantified the vaccine-dose fatality rate (vDFR) for all ages—which is the ratio of inferred
vaccine-induced deaths to vaccine doses delivered in a given population. After
analyzing mortality data, the researchers calculated a mean all-ages fatal
toxicity by injection of vDFR of one death per 800
injections across all ages and countries. This equates to 17 million COVID-19
vaccine-related deaths worldwide from 13.25 billion injections as of Sept. 2,
2023.

minimum, grossly incompetent. As I repeatedly observe, it is really hard to
tell the difference between incompetence and malice unless you have the
receipts (or can read minds), and the US HHS response to the COVIDcrisis provides multiple textbook case studies to
illustrate the point.
From Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci and their
flip/flops and repeated lies, to Rochelle Walinski
(hiding the myocarditis adverse events and so much
more while lying to press and public), David Marks (FDA Vaccines oversight),
Janet Woodcock (Operation Warp Speed), the list goes on and on down the
permanent Senior
Executive Service ranks all the way to the Government
Service 12 rank employees who have been enablers rather than whistleblowers.
These “servants” of the citizen/taxpayers of the United States are sworn to uphold and defend the US Constitution, but they see themselves as the permanent Imperial government, as opposed to the “temporary employee” elected officials who theoretically supervise and manage them. The
self-image which these HHS “leaders” and staffers repeatedly use to overcome
their guilt so that they (and their families) can live with themselves, and
which is so actively projected/propagandized to all of us outside the beltway
is one of benign, objective competence.
However, the
inconvenient truths and facts of the COVIDcrisis are
beginning to slip through the bulwarks of propaganda, censorship and PsyWar psychological manipulation technologies which the
administrative state and their many allies, paid shills and stooges have

that was covered up at the highest level, according to an explosive new court
filing.
A
newly-released court
filing raises grave questions about the relationship
between Alec Station, a CIA unit set up to track Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden
and his associates, and two 9/11 hijackers leading up to the attacks, which was
subject to a coverup at the highest levels of the
FBI.
Obtained by SpyTalk, the filing is a 21-page declaration by Don Canestraro, a lead investigator for the Office of Military
Commissions, the legal body overseeing the cases of 9/11 defendants. It
summarizes classified government discovery disclosures, and private interviews
he conducted with anonymous high-ranking CIA and FBI officials. Many agents who
spoke to Canestraro headed up Operation Encore, the
Bureau’s aborted, long-running probe into Saudi government connections to the
9/11 attack.
Despite
conducting multiple lengthy interviews with a range of witnesses, producing
hundreds of pages of evidence, formally investigating several Saudi officials,
and launching a grand jury to probe a Riyadh-run US-based support network for
the hijackers, Encore was abruptly terminated in 2016. This was purportedly
due to a byzantine intra-FBI bust-up over investigative
methods.
When originally
released in 2021 on the Office’s public court docket, every part of the
document was redacted except an “unclassified” marking. Given its explosive
contents, it is not difficult to see why: as Canestraro’s
investigation concluded, at least two 9/11 hijackers had been recruited either
knowingly or unknowingly into a joint CIA-Saudi intelligence operation which
may have gone awry.
‘A 50/50
chance’ of Saudi involvement
In 1996, Alec
Station was created under the watch of the CIA. The initiative was supposed to
comprise a joint investigative effort with the FBI. However, FBI operatives
assigned to the unit soon found they were prohibited from passing any
information to the Bureau’s head office without the CIA’s authorization, and
faced harsh penalties for doing so. Efforts to share information with the FBI’s
equivalent unit – the I-49 squad based in New York – were repeatedly
blocked.
In late
1999, with “the
system blinking red” about an imminent large-scale
Al Qaeda terror attack inside the US, the CIA and NSA were closely monitoring
an “operational cadre” within an Al Qaeda cell that included the Saudi
nationals Nawaf al-Hazmi
and Khalid al-Mihdhar. The pair would purportedly go
on to hijack American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon on
9/11.
Al-Hazmi and al-Midhar had attended
an Al Qaeda summit that took place between January 5th and 8th 2000, in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia. The
meeting was secretly photographed and videotaped by local
authorities at Alec Station’s request although, apparently, no audio was
captured. En route, Mihdhar transited through Dubai, where CIA operatives broke
into his hotel room and photocopied his passport. It showed that he possessed a
multi-entry visa to the US.
A
contemporaneous internal CIA cable stated this information was immediately
passed to the FBI “for further investigation.” In reality, Alec Station not
only failed to inform the Bureau of Mihdhar’s US
visa, but also expressly forbade two FBI agents assigned to the unit from doing
so.

A new trial,
expected to start shortly in the District of Brescia, Northern Italy, is
grounded on the accusation that NATO bases in the region of Veneto provided
orientation, training and support to infamous right-wing terrorist
organizations, most notably Ordine Nuovo.
In May 1974, Ordine Nuovo
operatives planted a bomb at an
anti-fascist rally in Piazza della
Loggia in Brescia, Italy, east of Milan,
The bombing was part of a wave of terrorist acts supported
by U.S. military intelligence, the CIA and NATO. In this case a main purpose
appears to have been to intimidate Italy’s political left. A December 1969
bombing at the Piazza Fontana in Milan, which killed 17 people, was directly
blamed on Italy’s left—which had been gaining in political strength–in an
attempt to discredit it.
The U.S. and NATO were promoting a “strategy of tension”
that aimed to create a climate of public fear that would enable passage of
draconian anti-terrorist laws while tilting the political balance rightward.[1]

influential head of the Deutsche Bank, Hermann Abs — who was also a director of
several giant corporations like Daimler-Benz and Lufthansa — marked his 56th
birthday in San Francisco.
Jailhouse
Rock had just come out and then rising star Elvis Presley was performing
downtown. But he had not travelled there for rock music nor
a typical birthday celebration. He had gone to give a speech at an elite event
— campaigning for what was boldly described as a new, global “Capitalist Magna Carta” to enshrine and protect worldwide “rights” for
private investors.
At a swanky
hotel near the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Abs presented his plan to more than
500 of the world’s most prominent bankers, businessmen and politicians
gathering for what was called the International Industrial Development
Conference.
He denounced
“the well-known attitude of some less developed countries, according to which
the Western world is actually obliged to pay for the advancement of their
economies.” He instead proposed a new international legal system for the
“effective and enforceable rule of law for private foreign investment.”
The context
was the Cold War and rising independence movements in the South and labour movements in the North. Foreign firms who had
profited under colonial regimes were feeling the earth shift beneath their
feet.
Across Africa
there were industries that could be nationalised by
newly-freed nations, there were special concessions
and vast landholdings that could be expropriated.
Abs said his
proposed system could help respond to, or even prevent, such threats. It could
also deal with what he called “indirect interferences with the rights of
private foreign capital” — including states refusing to give up “essential raw
materials” or grant companies required licences, and
even “excessive taxation” (from the investors’ perspective).

When it comes
to social insurance, the Post
is hardly a leftist publication. Its editorial page routinely inveighs against
Social Security and Medicare “entitlements.” That makes the lede
to its Oct. 3 story even more striking. It begins, “The United States is
failing at a fundamental mission — keeping people alive.”
At roughly
the same time, The Economist
tells us that “after years of false starts, the idea of a genuine elixir of
longevity is taking wing. Behind it is a coterie of fascinated and ambitious
scientists and enthusiastic and self-interested billionaires.”
The neoliberalist house organ notes that
“some people, observing billionaires’ interest in
longevity-promoting startups, worry that the benefits will be captured mainly
by the rich, leading to a class of long-lived Übermenschen
lording it over short-lived ordinary folk.”
Stuff and
nonsense, scoffs the British mag. It reassures us that “technologies have a
record of spreading, and cheapening as they do so.”
That will
come as news to poor people of the United States, whose lives are growing
shorter and shorter.
Live to 120?
There are counties in the United States where you’re beating the odds if you
make it past 70. The majorities in these counties may be
white, Black, or Native American. But each suffers from poverty, a shortage of
healthcare options, and a needlessly complex insurance system, while racism,
ageism, and regional animosities compound the mortality crisis.

The IMF and World Bank have for decades pushed a policy agenda based on
cuts to public services, increases in taxes paid by the poorest and moves to
undermine labour rights and protections.
IMF ‘structural adjustment’ policies have resulted in 52% of Africans
lacking access to healthcare and 83% having no safety nets to fall back on if
they lose their job or become sick. Even the IMF has shown that neoliberal
policies fuel poverty and inequality.
In 2021, an Oxfam review of IMF COVID-19 loans showed that 33 African
countries were encouraged to pursue austerity policies. The world’s
poorest countries are due to pay $43 billion in debt repayments in 2022, which
could otherwise cover the costs of their food imports.
Oxfam and Development Finance International (DFI) have also revealed that
43 out of 55 African Union member states face public expenditure cuts totalling $183 billion over the next five years.
According to Prof Michel Chossudovsky of
the Centre for Research on Globalization, the closure of the world economy
(March 11, 2020 Lockdown imposed on more than 190 countries) has triggered an
unprecedented process of global indebtedness. Governments are now under the
control of global creditors in the post-COVID era.
What we are seeing is a de facto privatisation
of the state as governments capitulate to the needs of Western financial
institutions.
Moreover, these debts are largely dollar-denominated, helping to
strengthen the US dollar and US leverage over countries.
It raises the question: what was COVID really about?
Millions have been asking that question since lockdowns and restrictions
began in early 2020. If it was indeed about public health, why close down the
bulk of health services and the global economy knowing full well what the
massive health, economic and debt implications would be?
Why mount a military-style propaganda campaign to censor world-renowned
scientists and terrorise entire populations and use
the full force and brutality of the police to ensure compliance?
These actions were wholly disproportionate to any risk posed to public
health, especially when considering the way ‘COVID death’ definitions and data
were often massaged and how PCR tests were misused to scare populations into
submission.
Prof Fabio Vighi
of Cardiff University implies we should have been suspicious from the start
when the usually “unscrupulous ruling elites” froze the global economy in the
face of a pathogen that targets almost exclusively the unproductive (the over
80s).

Smashed Politically, Economically, Medically and Technologically

Finally, in
January 2020, the World Economic Forum launched its ‘Great Reset’: The final
assault in the Elite’s long war against humankind and nature itself.
As we pass
the third anniversary since this final battle was launched, it is well worth
evaluating the progress of our resistance.
Is our
resistance being effective? Are we succeeding?
Unfortunately,
as is obvious from any serious evaluation, we are being smashed. Let me explain
why.

are not addressed in this article, I wish to acknowledge the range of other
profound threats that pose a serious risk to any worthwhile human future, most
notably the threat of nuclear war which arguably stands greater than at any
previous time in human history.]
Evaluating
Progress
Any strategy
to resolve a conflict of this nature must begin with a sound analysis of what
is happening:
Who is
driving it (which answers the question ‘Who benefits?’) What do they intend?
Why are they doing it? And how?
Only once
these questions have been clearly answered is it possible to develop a strategy
that will be adequate to the challenge posed by the threat.

So Who Is
Doing What?
Whatever we
have been told by such organizations as the World Health Organization, national
governments and the corporate media during the past three years, the most
cursory investigation reveals that the World Economic Forum has been just
behind the scenes effectively directing the response of governments to the
threat supposedly posed by a ‘pathogenic virus’ labeled SARS-CoV-2.
However, any
serious investigation will reveal that even the World Economic Forum is
simply another ‘front’ for more powerful individuals and their organizations,
which I call ‘the Global Elite’

– and that no such thing as a ‘pathogenic virus’ has ever been
isolated, including in the instance of SARS-CoV-2. See, for example, Christine

mRNA “vaccine”.
Flash back to
2009. According to the Wall Street Journal:
“Billionaires Try to Shrink World’s Population”.
In May 2009,
the Billionaire philanthropists met behind closed doors at the home of the
president of The Rockefeller University in Manhattan.
This Secret
Gathering was sponsored by Bill Gates. They called themselves “The Good
Club”.
Among the
participants were the late David Rockefeller, Warren Buffett, George Soros,
Michael Bloomberg Ted Turner, Oprah Winfrey
and many more.
In May 2009,
the WSJ as well as the Sunday Times reported: (John Harlow, Los Angeles) that
“Some of America’s
leading billionaires have met secretly to consider how their wealth could be
used to slow the growth of the world’s population and speed up improvements in
health and education.”
The emphasis
was not on population growth (i.e Planned Parenthood)
but on “Depopulation”, i.e,.
the reduction in the absolute size of the World’s
population.

According to the Sunday Times report :
The philanthropists who attended a summit convened on the initiative of Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, discussed joining forces to overcome political and religious obstacles to change.
Stacy Palmer,
editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy, said the summit was unprecedented. “We
only learnt about it afterwards, by accident. Normally these people are happy
to talk good causes, but this is different – maybe because they don’t want
to be seen as a global cabal,” he said.
Another guest
said there was “nothing as crude as a vote” but a consensus emerged that they
would back a strategy in which population growth would be tackled as a
potentially disastrous environmental, social and industrial threat.
“This is
something so nightmarish that everyone in this group agreed it needs big-brain
answers,” said the guest. …
Why all the
secrecy? “They wanted to speak rich to rich without worrying anything they
said would end up in the newspapers, painting them as an alternative world
government,” he said.(Sunday

Shrinking The World’s Population
The media
reports on the May 5, 2009 secret gathering focussed
on the commitment of “The Good Club” to “slowing down” the growth of the
World’s population.
“Shrink the
World Population” (the
WSJ Title) goes beyond Planned Parenthood which consists in “Reducing the
Growth of World Population”. It consists in “Depopulation”, namely
reducing the absolute size of the World’s Population,
which ultimately requires reducing the rate of birth (which would include
reduced fertility) coupled with a significant increase in the death rate.
Secret Meeting:
At the Height of the H1N1 Pandemic
On April 25,
2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) headed by Margaret Chan
declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). And a
couple of weeks later, the “Good Club” met in NYC at the height of the H1N1
swine flu pandemic which turned out to be a scam.
It is also
worth noting that at very outset of the H1N1 crisis in April 2009, Professor
Neil Ferguson of Imperial College, London was advising Bill Gates and
the WHO: “40 per cent of people in the UK could be infected [with H1N1]
within the next six months if the country was hit by a pandemic.”
And now (Summer- Autumn 2021) a third authoritative “mathematical model”
by the same “scientist” (Ferguson) was formulated to justify a “Fourth
Wave Lockdown”.
Saving Lives
to Achieve “Depopulation”
Was an absolute
“reduction” in World population contemplated at that May 2009 secret
meeting?
A few months
later, Bill Gates in his
TED presentation (February 2010) pertaining to vaccination, confirmed the
following;
“And if we do
a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we
could lower that [the world population] by 10 or 15 percent”.
According to
Gates’ statement, this would represent an
absolute reduction of the World’s population (2010) of the order of 680
million to 1.02 billion.

i.e., translating German press about my case, but I found his critique of both

Brand is a British lawmaker implicated in London’s war on Covid-19 and Ukraine
dissenters. Her husband was a commander in the Army’s psy-ops
division.
Allegations of sexual
impropriety and abuse by comedian and podcaster Russell Brand by the British
media prompted YouTube to
demonetize the star’s popular
channel on September 20.
The Grayzone
can now reveal that YouTube’s financial censorship of Brand is the result of an
effort waged by a former British government minister who was responsible for
London’s crackdown on dissent during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her husband has
also participated in that campaign of state repression as deputy commander of
77th Brigade, the British Army’s psychological warfare division.
YouTube justified its demonetization
of Brand on the grounds that he violated its “creator responsibility policy.”
This marks the first time a content creator has been financially punished by
the company for reasons other than the videos published on the site. A
spokesperson has claimed, “if a creator’s off-platform
behaviour harms our users, employees or ecosystem, we
take action.”
The allegations against Brand date from
betwee 2006 and ’13, and have yet to be proven in
court. There is no indication the charges are being investigated by law
enforcement in Britain or the US, where the offenses allegedly occurred. Brand
has vehemently
denied accusations of abuse and rape.

As the 17th
anniversary of the creation of WikiLeaks
passes us by, it’s probably worth taking a moment to reflect on Julian Assange and what his persecution means for us and our
society.
Because in a
very real sense, it’s not just a man locked up in Belmarsh
Prison for the crime of good journalism — it’s journalism itself. It’s the idea
that anyone should be permitted to expose the criminality of the world’s most
powerful and tyrannical people. It’s the idea that the public should be allowed
to know what abuses the U.S. empire is committing
around the world.
Julian Assange is the world’s greatest journalist. By
revolutionizing source protection for the digital age with the creation of WikiLeaks
17 years ago and then going on to break some of the biggest stories of the 21st
century, Assange set himself head-and-shoulders above
any other living reporter anywhere on Earth.
And by showing
the world that they can lock up the world’s greatest journalist for revealing
inconvenient truths, they are showing the world that they can lock up anyone.
That’s what
this case has always been about. It’s not about whether Assange
crossed some arbitrary procedural line when working with Chelsea Manning to
expose U.S. war crimes. It’s not about the U.S. protecting its national
security. It’s not about any of the other justifications people have put
forward to excuse their sycophantic support for the persecution of a journalist
for doing journalism.

the Mirror World, is a peculiar mix of
personal memoir, postmodern philosophy and historical survey. But it’s largely
a brief against the American writer and activist Naomi Wolf and her fellow
travelers in the “mirror world” of conspiracy-mongering.
“In my defence, it was never my intent to write this book,” she writes in the introduction. “I did not
have time. No one asked me to. And several people strongly cautioned against
it.”
She should
have listened. This isn’t a book that will likely age well.

WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video
depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb
of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff.
Reuters has
been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without
success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter
gun-sight, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee
and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously
wounded.

A veteran
South African official detailed meeting with an unprepared and “desperate”
Acting Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland,
begging for local help rolling back the popular coup in Niger. The recent BRICS
conference might give Nuland even more to fret about.
When US
Acting Deputy Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland,
traveled to South Africa on July 29, her reputation as a blunt instrument of
Washington’s hegemonic interests preceded her.
According to
a veteran South African official who attended meetings with the senior US
diplomat in Pretoria, however, Nuland and her team
were demonstrably unprepared to grapple with recent developments on the African
continent — particularly the military coup that removed Niger’s pro-Western
government hours before she launched her multi-stop tour of the region.
“In over 20
years working with the Americans, I have never seen them so desperate,” the
official told The Grayzone, speaking on the
condition of anonymity.
Pretoria was
well aware of Nuland’s hawkish reputation, but when
she arrived in Pretoria, the official described her as “totally caught off
guard” by winds of change engulfing the region. The July putsch that saw a
popular military junta come to power in Niger followed military coups in Mali
and Burkina Faso that were similarly inspired by mass anti-colonial sentiment.
Though
Washington has so far refused to characterize developments in the Nigerien
capital of Niamey as a coup, the South African source confirmed that Nuland sought South Africa’s assistance in responding to
regional conflicts, including in Niger, where she emphasized that Washington not
only held significant financial investments, but also maintained 1,000 of its
own troops. For Nuland, the realization that she was
negotiating from a position of weakness was likely a rude awakening.

When I was a
kid, the nightly news often had stories about Jimmy Hoffa. I don’t remember
anything specific, but the news seemed to indicate that Hoffa was a bad guy and
referred to him as a “union boss.” So, I asked my father some questions. What
is a union? What does it do? What is a teamster? Why don’t people like him?
His answers
didn’t make much sense to an 11-year-old. After the war, he said, he had taken
a job as a long-distance truck driver which, he emphasized, was the worst job
he ever had. It was lonely, never paid enough, and gave him hemorrhoids. He
said nothing when I asked what hemorrhoids were. As soon as he could, my father
quit. Finally, he told me that Hoffa was the head of a union of truck drivers
demanding decent pay.
I persisted
and asked if Hoffa was a bad person. My father hesitated to answer and even
seemed a little angry, but finally responded in an uncharacteristic,
and memorable way, “Hoffa might be a son of a bitch, but he is OUR son of a
bitch.” After he calmed down, he added something like, “He has to be tough to
make those companies pay drivers enough to make rent. When you get older you
will need a job; find a union job.”
Looking back
on that conversation I realize that my father taught me more home-grown
economic wisdom than I would ever learn in school.

American
society is steeped in narratives about economic prosperity shaped by capitalist
ideas of individualism and a corporate culture of exploitation. Children are
exposed to such ideas in schools and via pop culture and are required to put
them into practice at a young age by proving their worth in ever-competitive
environments to win college entry or employment. But rarely are young people
taught about their rights as workers and about the naturally adversarial role
between employers and employees. In California, thanks to labor organizers,
that’s about to change.
Assemblymember Liz
Ortega, who has been a respected labor leader in the state
as Statewide Political Director for AFSCME Local 3299, and whose daughter is a
public-school student, authored a labor education bill, AB 800, which just
passed the California legislature in September. The bill, which Governor Gavin
Newsom signed into law, requires all public and charter schools to mark
“Workplace Readiness Week” at the end of each April. But such a benign
description obscures (perhaps intentionally?) the fact that it is a labor
education bill.
Many colleges
and universities have departments that study labor, such as the UCLA Labor Centeror the CUNY
School of Labor and Urban Studies. But,
generally speaking, the starkest exposure to labor education that K-12 students
currently get is if and when their unionized teachers go on strike. For
example, when Seattle-area teachers went on strike in 2015, the Seattle Times
published a handy
guide on how parents could explain to their kids why
teachers were skipping the classroom. The kids might have been primed to
understand what was happening had they already been getting some labor
education in the classroom.
California
has led the nation in introducing K-12 students to ideas about organized labor.
In 2012, then-Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that declared the
month of May as Labor
History Month. Teaching students about the rich
history of labor organizing in the U.S. can offer a solid foundation upon which
to inform them about their own rights in the workplace. AB 800 does precisely
that: teaching younger generations about labor in a way that doesn’t reinforce
capitalist values and corporate ethos.
Unsurprisingly,
conservative forces have denounced such education. The anti-union think tank Public
Service Research Foundation, which routinely churns
out treatises critical of labor organizing, in 2016 published a lengthy
screed denouncing Labor History Month as a form of
“propaganda.” “One can only imagine the howling from union lobbyists if a
California State legislator introduced a bill establishing ‘Capitalism is Cool
Week’ in public schools,” wrote author Kevin Dayton.
But our
nation is so steeped in ideas that reinforce the “coolness” of capitalism that
there is no need for explicit pro-capitalist education. Take “National
Manufacturing Day,” marked every year on October 6.
The day is touted as “manufacturing’s biggest annual opportunity to inspire the
next generation, positively shift perceptions about our industry, and build the
foundation for the manufacturing workforce of the future.”

United States, so much so that even the likes of Joe Biden and Donald Trump
have been spotted lurking around picket lines and union events popping up
across the country. To talk about the rise in the American labor movement,
Harold Meyerson, editor at large for The American
Prospect, joins host Robert Scheer on this episode of
the Scheer Intelligence podcast. Meyerson has a distinguished career
reporting on labor issues for multiple publications, among them the L.A. Times
and Washington Post.
Meyerson says public support for unions is almost at an all time
high and the proof is in the pudding when looking at the various industries
organizing in real time across America. From the writer’s strike in Hollywood
to the autoworkers in the Midwest to the assistant professors on numerous
campuses, people are standing up for their rights as workers and recognizing
their strength in numbers. “Gallup and Pew poll on [unions] every year and in
the last few years, it’s been about 70% approval rating, which is, so far, in
excess of the approval rating of virtually any other American institution,” Meyerson said.
Scheer makes sure to remind people of the successes of the labor
movement in the past, most notably in one of America’s greatest exports, the
entertainment industry, where even Ronald Reagan championed organizing. Along
with the autoworkers, Scheer argues the two groups
represented the models for unionization and the reason why America had a middle
class.

In the
largest-ever U.S. healthcare worker strike, more than 75,000 Kaiser Permanente
employees in six states and Washington, D.C., began a three-day work stoppage
Wednesday to protest what they say are unfair working conditions and unsafe
staffing levels at hundreds of hospitals and clinics across the country.
The Coalition
of Kaiser Permanente Unions — which represents 85,000 KP workers in eight
unions — began its national bargaining process in April in anticipation of
worker contracts expiring at the end of September.
Union members
are seeking
across-the-board raises of between 5.75 percent and 6.5 percent; KP is offering
3 percent. Additionally, workers want protections against subcontracting and
outsourcing, better performance-sharing bonuses, an improved retiree medical
plan, and unionization rights for employees of nonunion entities acquired by
the KP.
In a 2022 survey of 33,000 KP
employees, two-thirds of respondents said they’ve seen patient care delayed or
denied due to short staffing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We all know
how bad the housing crisis is. Rising rents, rampant
speculation, and skyrocketing eviction and homelessness rates
paint a grim picture. Beneath the surface is a more malignant driver of this
crisis: the speculative private market, which has concentrated its grip over
real estate to such an extent that virtually every American
lives in a company town now.
As educators, we have witnessed this housing crisis not only be a source
of stress and instability for ourselves and our coworkers, but also uproot our
students from schools — away from their friends, teachers, counselors, and
neighborhood communities. The root of this injustice is the private market’s
monopoly on housing construction and ownership. Unions from all sectors —
education, service, manufacturing, and especially the building trades — need to
unite and campaign for housing policies that break the monopoly of the private
market.
Modern company towns
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,
company towns were areas where workers from one or a handful of companies lived
in housing owned and operated by those companies. The result
was that companies wielded exorbitant power over their workers, as they
controlled not only their wages but their homes.
Today, the power of the real-estate industry has grown so vast that most
Americans have extremely little control over their housing. As Fran
Quigley points
out, “Institutional owners — corporations or limited
liability companies — now own the
majority of all US rental units and
over 80 percent of the properties with twenty-five or more units.” Since 2009,
Wall Street firms have converted hundreds
of thousands of homes into rentals,
increasing rental and home-buying prices. This extreme concentration of
property in the hands of a few real-estate tycoons compounds with the national
housing shortage. The effect is striking: the
majority of Americans, even those lucky enough to own homes, face a housing
market rife with speculation and concentration that produces a feedback
loop of ever-increasing costs.
Meanwhile the National
Multifamily Housing Council — supported by the
likes of billionaire real-estate investor Harlan Crow, whose father was America’s
biggest landlord and who carries on the
tradition — ruthlessly interferes with even modest efforts to curb the market’s
power, such as rent control and stronger eviction protections. By using housing
as a speculative investment, the private market has created an entrenched system
that enriches the few while creating precarity for
the many.

Many of those who experience precarity are
union members, including hotel staff, construction workers, paraprofessionals,

“Kaiser Permanente Workers Begin the Largest Healthcare Strike in U.S.
History”

The largest
health care strike in U.S. history has begun, as more than 75,000 workers at
Kaiser Permanente walked off the job this morning. The scheduled three-day
labor stoppage comes after Kaiser failed to meet the demands of workers,
continuing to prioritize their profits over patient care.
The striking
coalition includes eight unions representing health care workers from a variety
of job descriptions and covers Kaiser facilities in
California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Virginia, and Washington City. This
represents about 40% of all Kaiser Permanente staff, according to spokeswoman
Renee Saldana of the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare
(SEIU-UHW)—the largest union in the coalition.
The union’s
contract with the company expired over the weekend, and workers are demanding a
significant staffing increase, alleviation of grueling work hours, wage
increases that outpace inflation, and benefits for retired staff in the
industry. Additionally, they are noting that their poor working conditions lead
to poor patient care. This represents a common theme for healthcare
workers attempting to provide quality patient care in a
capitalist healthcare system that continually puts profit over patient
wellbeing.

There was a
decade of popular uprisings from
2010 until the global pandemic in 2020. These uprisings shook the foundations
of the global order. They denounced corporate domination, austerity cuts and
demanded economic justice and civil rights. There were nationwide protests in
the United States centered around the 59-day Occupy
encampments. There were popular eruptions in Greece, Spain, Tunisia, Egypt,
Bahrain, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Turkey, Brazil, Ukraine, Hong
Kong, Chile and during South Korea’s Candlelight Light Revolution. Discredited
politicians were driven from office in Greece, Spain, Ukraine, South Korea,
Egypt, Chile and Tunisia. Reform, or at least the promise of it, dominated
public discourse. It seemed to herald a new era.
Then the backlash. The aspirations of the popular movements were
crushed. State control and social inequality expanded. There was no significant
change. In most cases, things got worse. The far-right emerged
triumphant.
What
happened? How did a decade of mass protests that seemed to herald democratic
openness, an end to state repression, a weakening of the domination of global
corporations and financial institutions and an era of freedom sputter to an
ignominious failure? What went wrong? How did the hated bankers and politicians
maintain or regain control? What are the effective tools to rid ourselves of
corporate domination?

The Canadian
parliament made headlines around the world after it gave a standing ovation to a
98-year-old Ukrainian-Canadian Nazi soldier.
Yaroslav Hunka, a volunteer member of
the Nazi battalion Waffen-SS Galicia Division – a
unit infamous for its role in massacring civilians during World War Two – was
also afforded a private meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The backlash
this week led to the resignation of the speaker of the Canadian House of
Commons and an apology from Trudeau. Yet, in his mea culpa, Trudeau insisted
that this was just another reason to push back against Russian propaganda.
However, it
certainly was not Vladimir Putin who convinced the Liberal Party of Canada to
invite a literal Nazi soldier who is now wanted for extradition by Poland. This
was not an honest mistake. In fact, the Hunka affair
is merely the latest example of Canada’s close collaboration with World War
Two-era Nazis.

Remember when
Kim Jong-un died? Back in 2020, corporate media was awash with reports that the
North Korean leader had died or was in a “vegetative state.” Yet, just
days after the media frenzy, he appeared alive and well. So how did the likes
of CNN, MSNBC and The Economist get the story so
disastrously wrong? By relying on hearsay from outlets funded
by the CIA cutout organization, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
As The Washington Post explained, rumors
about Kim’s health first hit the headlines after The Daily NK, a South Korean
website known for “gossip and rumors,” published a report based on an anonymous
source. From there, unnamed U.S. officials appeared to support the story.
Laughing the affair off, the Post offered some advice to its competitors.
“South Korea’s news media isn’t always the most reliable source even under
normal conditions,” it wrote, and, on U.S. officials, it noted, “Don’t trust, verify.”
And yet, despite this, the Post has since continually run stories based on Daily NK
reports, treating the outlet as a trusted news source. This is particularly
egregious because, although the Post did not mention it, the Daily NK is part
of a vast network of Korean outlets funded, promoted and supported by the NED,
an organization created by the Reagan administration as a front group for the
CIA, carrying out many of the agency’s most controversial psychological
operations, including influence ops and regime change programs.
In fact, a vast amount of the news we in the West hear about the
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) comes courtesy of organizations
with deep ties to the U.S. national security state, helping explain why the
country is seen as perhaps the most bizarre and frightening on the planet.

Criminal trials and investigations in Europe confirmed that top-secret
“Supplement B” to U.S. Army Field Manual 30-31, contrary to the U.S.
government’s oft-repeated denials, was indeed an authentic document.
FM 30-31B first surfaced in Europe in the 1970s and was long suspected to
be used by U.S. and host countries’ intelligence as operational guidance for
violent anti-Communist destabilization, including acts of terrorism.
U.S. intelligence claimed consistently that the document was a
sophisticated “Soviet forgery.”
Investigative findings have ultimately vindicated the first
assessment of CovertAction Information Bulletin, among the
earliest sources to conclude that FM 30-31B was most likely genuine.
The document in question, the very
existence of which is still officially denied, is a classified annex, known as
“Supplement B,” to a Field Manual series of the US Army, coded “FM 30-31
Stability Operations—Intelligence.”
FM 30-31 essentially governs the
intelligence liaison with countries hosting U.S. troops (HC), with respect to
counterinsurgency operations.
The general idea behind it is that HC
are friendly to U.S. interests and, absent an external aggression, the greatest
security threat to HC would be internal “subversion.”
Dated March 18, 1970, Supplement B to
FM 30-31 (“FM 30-31B”) was frequently referred to, eventually, as the
“Westmoreland Directive” because it bears the signature of the former Supreme
Commander of U.S. Armed Forces in Vietnam, General William Westmoreland.

the Central African Republic. The command’s operations in

massive military exercises including African

Express, Obangame Express, Justified
Accord, and Flintlock, which
have included participation from Europe, and from almost every African
country.
The ramping
up of US militarism on the African continent – and the ensuing destabilization
of communities and countries, correlate with a 500%
spike in incidents of violence attributed to Islamist
terrorist organizations. Part of AFRICOM’s stated mission is to “promote
regional security, stability, and prosperity.” But its very nature precludes
the development of any of these conditions and really brings about
destabilization and the furthering of U.S. interests on the continent.
A mass
movement must be forged to expose AFRICOM and its real purpose and make
it inseparable with the concerns we have over the militarization of police in
our communities in the United States. The recently passed National
Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) included billions
for AFRICOM and the continuation of the Department of Defense 1033 program that
transfers millions of dollars worth of military
equipment to police forces across the country. Resources that
are being squandered to support imperialist adventures must be seized by the
people and used to address the human rights needs of African/Black
people and other oppressed and exploited peoples for housing, healthcare,
education, food and clean water, instead of on war on behalf of the
corporations and the rich.

Vaccine-associated Mortality in the Southern Hemisphere”

Abstract
Seventeen equatorial and Southern-Hemisphere
countries were studied (Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia,
Ecuador, Malaysia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South
Africa, Suriname, Thailand, Uruguay), which comprise 9.10 % of worldwide
population, 10.3 % of worldwide COVID-19 injections (vaccination rate of 1.91 injections per
person, all ages), virtually every COVID-19 vaccine type and manufacturer, and
span 4 continents.
In the 17
countries, there is no evidence in all-cause mortality (ACM) by time data of
any beneficial effect of COVID-19 vaccines. There is no association in time
between COVID-19 vaccination and any proportionate reduction in ACM. The
opposite occurs.
All 17
countries have transitions to regimes of high ACM, which occur when the
COVID-19 vaccines are deployed and administered.
Nine of the
17 countries have no detectable excess ACM in the period of approximately one
year after a pandemic was declared on 11 March 2020 by the World Health
Organization (WHO), until the vaccines are rolled out (Australia, Malaysia, New
Zealand, Paraguay, Philippines, Singapore, Suriname, Thailand, Uruguay).
Unprecedented
peaks in ACM occur in the summer (January-February) of 2022 in the Southern
Hemisphere, and in equatorial-latitude countries, which are synchronous with or
immediately preceded by rapid
COVID-19-vaccine-booster-dose rollouts (3rd or 4th doses). This phenomenon is
present in every case with sufficient mortality data (15 countries). Two of the
countries studied have insufficient mortality data in January-February 2022
(Argentina and Suriname).
Detailed
mortality and vaccination data for Chile and Peru allow resolution by age and
by dose number. It is unlikely that the observed peaks in all-cause mortality
in January-February 2022 (and additionally in: July-August 2021, Chile;
July-August 2022, Peru), in each of both countries and in each elderly age
group, could be due to any cause other than the temporally associated rapid
COVID-19-vaccine-booster-dose rollouts. Likewise, it is unlikely that the
transitions to regimes of high ACM, coincident with the rollout and sustained
administration of COVID-19 vaccines, in all 17 Southern-Hemisphere and
equatorial-latitude countries, could be due to any cause other than the
vaccines.
Synchronicity
between the many peaks in ACM (in 17 countries, on 4 continents, in all elderly
age groups, at different times) and associated rapid booster rollouts allows
this firm conclusion regarding causality, and accurate quantification of
COVID-19-vaccine toxicity.
The all-ages
vaccine-dose fatality rate (vDFR), which is the ratio
of inferred vaccine-induced deaths to vaccine doses delivered in a population,
is quantified for the January-February 2022 ACM peak to fall in the range 0.02
% (New Zealand) to 0.20% (Uruguay). In Chile and Peru, the vDFR
increases exponentially with age (doubling approximately every 4 years of age),
and is largest for the latest booster doses, reaching approximately 5 % in the
90+ years age groups (1 death per 20 injections of dose 4). Comparable results
occur for the Northern Hemisphere, as found in previous articles (India,
Israel, USA).
We quantify
the overall all-ages vDFR for the 17 countries to be
(0.126 ± 0.004) %, which would imply 17.0 ± 0.5 million COVID-19 vaccine deaths
worldwide, from 13.50 billion injections up to 2 September 2023. This would
correspond to a mass iatrogenic event that killed (0.213 ± 0.006) % of the
world population (1 death per 470 living persons, in less than 3 years), and
did not measurably prevent any deaths.
The overall
risk of death induced by injection with the COVID-19 vaccines in actual
populations, inferred from excess all-cause mortality and its synchronicity
with rollouts, is globally pervasive and much larger than reported in clinical
trials, adverse effect monitoring, and cause-of-death statistics from death
certificates, by 3 orders of magnitude (1,000-fold greater).
The large age
dependence and large values of vDFR quantified in
this study of 17 countries on 4 continents, using all the main COVID-19 vaccine
types and manufacturers, should induce governments to immediately end the
baseless public health policy of prioritizing elderly residents for injection
with COVID-19 vaccines, until valid risk-benefit analyses are made.

At least 237
Palestinians have been killed by Israeli police, troops and armed civilians so
far this year, according to The Electronic Intifada’s tracking. That figure
includes people who died of injuries sustained during previous years.
Thirty-five
people in Israel and Israelis and other nationals in the West Bank have been
killed in what Israel says were Palestinian attacks during 2023, or died from
previous injuries.
On 1
September, Abd al-Rahim Ghannam, 36, was killed by Israeli
troops in Aqaba, near the northern West Bank city of Tubas.
Ghannam, a bystander, was shot in the head during an arrest raid.
When Israeli troops failed to apprehend the target of the raid, an eyewitness
told Al Jazeera, soldiers opened heavy fire toward
the building in which they believed the wanted man was hiding.
The UN
monitoring group OCHA said that
“paramedics were prevented from tending to the wounded for over an hour and an ambulance sustained damage from rubber-coated [steel]
bullets.”
Another
Palestinian, Ayed Abu Harb, 21, was shot in
the head and killed by Israeli troops during a raid in Nur Shams camp near the northwestern West Bank city of Tulkarm on 5 September.
Another
Palestinian was seriously injured during the raid and occupation forces caused
widespread damage to the refugee camp, including the razing of the main road in
Nur Shams.

When Suad al-Amour visited her son Sami in jail during 2021, she
did not realize it would be for the last time.
Sami appeared
relatively well on that occasion. Yet his health deteriorated over the next few
months.
Born with a
heart problem, he had high blood pressure behind bars and complained of
vomiting and exhaustion.
Doctors
recommended that he undergo urgent surgery for blocked arteries. The Israeli
authorities first transported him from one prison to another before eventually
taking him to hospital.
In November
that year, Sami died at the age of 39. Human rights groups have argued that he
was a victim of medical negligence.
Israel has
retained Sami’s body. As a result, his family has been prevented from
organizing his funeral.
Suad, his mother, has only one wish: to see Sami’s body and
say a final goodbye before his burial.
“I am
demanding that my son’s body is brought back to Gaza so that I can hug him and
visit his grave,” Suad, 65, said.
Sami grew up
in the Deir al-Balah area
of Gaza. In April 2008 Israeli troops who had invaded Gaza arrested him, along
with his brother Hamada.
A fighter with Islamic
Jihad, Sami was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 19 years
imprisonment. Hamada was jailed for 12 years and eventually released.
Israel treats
all resistance to its brutal military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza as
terrorism.
Making pain
worse
After
Palestinians die in jail, Israel often worsens the pain of their families.
Hundreds of
Palestinian bodies are being held by Israel.
These are the
bodies of Palestinians killed directly by Israel or who died in prison. They
are either kept in refrigerators or in the so-called “cemeteries of the
numbers.”
Faris Baroud died in an
Israeli jail in February 2019. He was 51.
A prisoner
for more than half his life, Faris had been arrested
in 1991. He was condemned to life imprisonment for killing an Israeli and
injuring three others.
Seventeen
years of his jail term were spent in solitary confinement.

Across
Europe, far-right populism is surging. Right-wing parties with neo-fascist
roots are part of governing coalitions or increasing their parliamentary seats.
Yet fears of anti-Semitism rising in Europe haven’t stopped Israel from
engaging with Europe’s extremists — a policy of the state even before its
inception.
In August,
Israel’s ambassador to Romania, Reuven Azar, met with the leader of the far-right Alliance for the
Union of Romanians party (AUR), George Simion,
sparking outrage in Israel and among the Jewish diaspora.
The Israeli government has long boycotted the party over its anti-Semitism and
Holocaust-denying rhetoric, yet the ambassador’s meeting appeared to reverse
that policy.
Israeli
Foreign Minister Eli Cohen instructed Azar and
settler leader Yossi Dagan to meet with the AUR party
head. Israel’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to MintPress News’ requests for comment on the meeting. In
addition to this controversial meeting, Cohen met Italy’s
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Antonio Tajani,
in July, emphasizing strengthening relations between the two states. This
development comes despite Giorgia Meloni,
the leader of the neo-fascist Brothers of Italy party, being sworn in as prime
minister in 2022. The new coalition is seen as Italy’s most far-right since
World War II.
While media and political pundits denounce Israel’s Foreign Ministry for
a perceived policy shift, Israel has a long history of supporting fascist
regimes and right-wing politicians abroad.

The statement
that you can’t be a supporter of the Palestinians unless you are an
anti-Zionist may seem dogmatic, even sectarian to some.
But it is the
failure of Britain’s Palestine solidarity movement to understand this simple
truth which is responsible for so many of our recent setbacks. It is this which
has enabled the successful weaponization of
anti-Semitism.
Subjectively
speaking, it is perfectly possible to support the Palestinians and the “right
of Israel to exist” at the same time. In theory, there was no reason at all why
good men and women could not sit down and draw the boundaries of a two-state
solution equitable to all.
There was
only one problem. Such a solution failed to take into account the dynamics of
settler-colonialism and of Zionism in particular.
Many
supporters of the British Empire, liberal imperialists such as Thomas MacCaulay and the Labour Party Fabians, really did believe that there could
be a benevolent imperialism that was compatible with supporting the rights of
the colonized. It was called
“trusteeship.”
Many honest
people believed that the colonies were the “White Man’s Burden,” as the British
novelist and poet Rudyard Kipling infamously
put it, and that we were only in India and Africa out of
the goodness of our hearts.
The Church
Missionary Society and people like John
Philip would have been aghast if you had accused them of
supporting white supremacy. Yet that is what they did.
Holding contradictory
ideas inside one’s head is what most people do, for much of the time. It’s
called “cognitive dissonance” or as George Orwell termed it, “doublethink.”

Palestinian
Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas
is no stranger to absurd statements that demonstrate a lack of wisdom or depth.
Nor are his policies and actions easy to interpret or justifiable in the larger
context of the Palestinian struggle for liberation.
This also
applies to his comments regarding the crime of the Nazi Holocaust perpetrated
against the Jews of Europe, during a speech to members of his Fatah movement in
Ramallah in late August.
However, the
fiery Palestinian
Open Letter condemning those statements, signed
by over 200 Palestinian academics, activists, artists and others, was scarcely
less strange or lacking in wisdom than Abbas’ words.
Perhaps
unintentionally, the authors and signatories slipped as he did, consequently
derailing the discussion from Israel’s crimes against the Palestinian people to
implicitly apologizing to Israel – whose representatives instigated the storm of
outrage at Abbas’ remarks.
“This apology
feeds the perception that Palestinians – much in the manner that Muslims have
experienced in the two decades since 9/11 – are collectively responsible for
what any other Palestinian says or does, and must therefore dissociate
themselves from it.”
Founded by
Israeli intelligence veteran
It should be
recalled that Abbas’ comments were publicized and
disseminated by the anti-Muslim Zionist propaganda outlet MEMRI.
MEMRI, founded
and run by a former senior Israeli military intelligence
officer, is notoriously known for targeting activists, preachers, media
professionals, artists and academics, Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims and other
critics of Israel.
It is also
known for distortion and taking words out of context – although it is unclear
how much additional context could have excused Abbas’
comments on this occasion, given how he has expressed
similar views before.
With such
remarks, Abbas only provides propaganda fodder to
Israel and its lobby groups like MEMRI, whose mission is to exploit any
opportunity to change the subject from Israel’s crimes, set the public and
media agenda and paint Palestinians in a bad light.

Khitam Salim struggles to provide her
children with packed lunches.
A mother of
three, she has been a single parent since her husband died from leukemia four
years ago.
Her children
attend a primary school in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost
city. Run by the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA), the school does not
provide its students with meals so they have to bring sandwiches or buy food
from a canteen.
To buy food,
the children would need more than $1 per day. Their mother cannot afford that
amount.
“No one helps
me,” Salim – who is unemployed and depends on social
assistance – said. “The conditions in which we find ourselves are very hard.
The children see some of their classmates buying things during the break. Not
being able to buy anything themselves has a bad effect on them
psychologically.”
Faris Qishta has five children, all
of whom attend UNRWA schools.
He needs
money to buy uniforms, as well as food for his children.
“I cannot do
all this,” he said.
If it wasn’t
for food aid packages he receives, “my family would have died of hunger,” he
said. The aid, however, does not include meals at school.
Formerly a
taxi driver, Qishta is now jobless.
“I am always
looking for work, even for a few shekels, in order to meet my children’s
simplest needs,” he said. “But I cannot find anything. My children have many
dreams and when they come to tell me about them, I feel sad. I don’t know if
their future will be better or if it will be like it is at the moment.”
UNRWA
oversees a network of 288
schools in Gaza, catering to almost 300,000 students.
No breakfast
Thousands of
these children go to school without breakfast and without having money for food
during the day. As they lack proper nutrition, many children cannot concentrate
properly on their lessons.
UNRWA used to
run a free meal scheme in its schools.
Because of
budgetary constraints, the general school-feeding program was halted in 2014. As
a result, the agency now only gives free meals in particular cases.
Since 2014,
UNRWA has been forced to cut spending amid a major funding crisis.
Although the
crisis began before then, it became especially acute while Donald Trump was the
US president. Currying favor with an extremist pro-Israel lobby, Trump
introduced drastic
cuts in aid to UNRWA.
The US has
adopted a more favorable stance toward the agency since Trump’s successor Joe
Biden moved into the White House.

After months
of intermittent but deadly clashes and failed ceasefire agreements,
mid-September saw yet another such truce agreed in the Ein al-Hilweh refugee camp
in Southern Lebanon.
I hurried
there on 16 September to take advantage of the calm between the Fatah movement
and al-Shabab al-Muslim, an umbrella group for a
number of Palestinian Salafist factions in the camp.
As usual, I
handed in my ID card to one of the Lebanese soldiers stationed at al-Nabaa checkpoint, one of seven checkpoints that one must
pass to enter a camp that is under close Lebanese military control.
With a wave
of his hand, the soldier indicated to me to open the iron
gate.
Inside, I was
welcomed by Abdel Rahman al-Safadi,
60, the father of a friend. I immediately noticed the large tarpaulins that had
been stretched across the camp’s alleys in various locations as demarcation
lines, establishing clearly which factions hold sway in what territory.
The recent
wave of conflict has swept through several areas of the camp, many of which are
named after villages and towns in Palestine where camp residents originated.
Among these, Hittin and Tawari
were hardest hit and off-limits to journalists and civilians, since the warring
factions had designated them as military zones.
Al-Safadi resides in the Ras al-Ahmar area. The refugees in this area are descendants of
those who were forcibly exiled in 1948 from the village of Ras
al-Ahmar, located to the north of Safad
in what is now northern Israel.
The
neighborhood, which had been spared in the many previous rounds of clashes that
the camp has endured over the years, this time found
itself a battleground. But al-Safadi and the men of
the area collectively decided they would not leave their houses.
“Now you will
only see men. All women and children evacuated the camp, but we decided to
remain. If we were to abandon our homes, fighters would seize them, converting
them into makeshift barracks,” al-Safadi told The
Electronic Intifada. “There have been instances where they’ve looted deserted
homes. This is why I stayed.”

killed on Friday as Israeli settlers
attacked the occupied West Bank town of Huwwara, just hours after Israeli forces killed another Palestinian
in the area, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.
A settler
shot 19-year-old Labeeb Mohammed Dmaidi in the heart, after dozens of settlers carried
out attacks on Palestinian property in Huwwara under
the protection of Israeli troops, according to Wafa.
The settlers
damaged homes and buildings, and confronted Palestinian locals, who gathered to
fend off the attacks.
Wafa later reported that Dmaidi's
funeral was also attacked by Israeli soldiers, wounding at least eight people.
The Israeli
military's account of the killing differed - it said that a Palestinian threw a
rock at a soldier, who fired back, adding that "a hit was
identified".

A new trend
is emerging in the Israeli hasbara discourse
targeting Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims: women’s rights.
The word
‘new’ is not exactly accurate. The misuse of the genuine struggle for women’s
rights in the Arab and Muslim world is only new insofar as the increasing
reliance on the tactic within the larger Israeli propaganda discourse.
This was
demonstrated in a most bizarre way during the speech of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on September 19 at
the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The story was
orchestrated by Gilad Erdan, a mediocre Israeli
diplomat and Tel Aviv’s UN Ambassador.
Erdan’s real strength comes from the fact
that he is supported by the same Western governments that continue to fund and
defend Israel’s war machine and military occupation of Palestine.
Naturally, he is also given a disproportionate amount of media coverage
by corporate Western mainstream media when compared to any other UN diplomat.
Erdan’s work is predicated mostly on a
single tactic: If he is not pleased by the conduct of his peers at the UN
General Assembly, he simply accuses them of
being ‘anti-Semitic,’ as a matter of course.
At times, the entire UN political body is accused of being anti-Israel
and anti-Semitic.
This Israeli strategy – defaming truth sayers
as anti-Semites – only succeeds because it is part of a massive political and
intellectual discourse that is constantly fed by the media and accepted as a
fact by Western politicians.
