disorientation for many who somehow believed in historical exceptionalism,
and in the systematic violation of human rights with indefinite impunity.
According to the Anglophone social media, there is a growing consensus that . .
. "the Iceman cometh.”
The 14+ items below are recent essays and articles which suggest that the day of
accountability is approaching relentlessly -no matter the costs- and a
historical imperative will be manifest in a ruthless judgment, with no acquittals.
Judging from the past, we seem to be approaching a moment of profound
historical discontinuity, where traditions may serve as a tentative esquisse, but

Israeli settlers
in the occupied West Bank have
distributed threatening leaflets on cars and left bloodied dolls at schools,
warning Palestinians to leave or be killed.
“By God,
we will descend upon your heads with a great catastrophe soon. You have the
last chance to escape to Jordan in an organised
manner,” said one leaflet circulated on Friday in the West Bank city of Salfit.
“After
that, we will destroy every enemy and forcefully expel you from our holy land …
Load your bags immediately and leave wherever you came from. We are coming.”
The
leaflet also warned of a new “major Nakba”,
referencing the 1948 displacement of 750,000 Palestinians from their
homeland.

In the
occupied Al-Ma’rajat area near Jericho, dolls covered
in red paint, ostensibly to look like blood and scare young students, were left
at the entrance of a school after settlers vandalised
it.
Before
Hamas’s suprise attack on 7 October, settlers
harassed and assaulted Palestinians on a daily basis under the protection of
the Israeli army, acts that have escalated in the past 20 days.
In the
town of Deir Istiya, west
of Salfit, olive farmers have become accustomed to annual
attacks during harvest season.
But this
year, local journalist Abdel Qader Aql told Middle East Eye that settlers are much more active
and seem to be couching their attacks as revenge for Hamas’s
assault.
“This week
alone, there were more than 10 attacks on farmers, threats, shouting,
intimidation and expulsion of them from their land,” he said.
One farmer
was injured after settlers hit his head with a baton.
“He
fainted, and when he woke up, he found the settlement guard pointing a knife at
him,” Aql said.
Olive
pickers in the same town were surprised to find leaflets pasted on their
car windows saying:
“You
wanted war, wait for displacement.”
“They also
published pictures of families picking olives and incited them for no reason.
Because of these threats, the people started heading to their lands in whole
groups to protect themselves,” Aql said.
In Al-Ma’rajat area, where settlers attacked the Arab Al-Kaabna School and left the bloodied dolls, human rights
defenders say residents in the Bedouin community are repeatedly attacked as
settlers aim to displace residents and seize their lands.
Hassan Malihat from the Al-Baidar
Organization for Defending Bedouin Rights said that settler groups have
repeatedly attacked the community with the aim of displacing its residents and
seizing their lands.
On
Thursday evening, Malihat told MEE, settlers threw
stones at the residents’ homes in this community where 1,200 Palestinians live,
and seized their livestock.
“Attacks
on the Kaabna Arabs are repeated, and they filed
complaints with the Israeli police to no avail,” he said.

As of Saturday morning October 28,
Israel’s genocidal attacks on Gaza have killed more than 7,300
Palestinians including about 3,000 children according to Al Jazeera.
Another 1,650 Palestinians are trapped under the
demolished remains of their homes and buildings destroyed by Israeli bombing,
with half of them being children.
This is an
Israeli war which specifically targets Palestinian civilians especially
children as the IDF has bombed:

schools,
·
hospitals,
·
mosques and churches,
·
homes, residential areas, apartment
buildings,
·
bakeries,
·
communications infrastructure,
phone and internet cut-off
Water, electricity and fuel have
been cut off to Gaza and more than 200,000 housing units have been destroyed entirely or partly by Israel. 1.4 million
Palestinians about half the population of Gaza, have
been displaced.
The
Netanyahu government has instructed Palestinians to leave Northern Gaza for the
south but it continues to indiscriminately bomb both parts so that there is
no safe place for the Gaza population.
Israel
escalated its war even more on Friday night with the imposition of a total
communications blockade on Gaza making medical rescue efforts impossible.
This is
designed to provide cover for even more atrocities by Tel Aviv as its
aerial bombing has intensified to an unprecedented degree and a ground
operation by Israeli soldiers has commenced in Gaza.
Pure
Horror. “Ball of Fire”
The bombing is so extreme that it
has turned Gaza into “a ball of fire” according
to Al Jazeera. “Pure horror” is what
Palestinians are living through says the NGO Save the Children.
“Situation is now catastrophic” emphasizes Shehab Younis, a Palestinian photographer who managed to send a WhatsApp
voice note message to the BBC’s correspondent Tom Bateman based in
Jerusalem. “We have lost contact with people who have been targeted or
injured.” According to Bateman, ambulances cannot be called for people
injured in Israeli airstrikes due to the communications blackout.
On
Saturday morning, Shehab posted a video of a “badly
wounded man being rushed out of a building.” An ambulance cannot be brought for
him so he has to be put in a truck.
Shehab highlights the dire plight of Palestinian civilians
by explaining that
“When
there is bombardment of houses the situation has become really very hard
because of the lack of communications, of internet services. All this is
negativity impacting a large number of medical facilities and public service
buildings when there are bombings in their areas.”
With
almost half the casualties of Israel’s bombing being children, Palestinian
parents are resorting to “desperate measures” (according to Al Jazeera) “so that children or at least their memories
survive.”
Doctors
at Al-Shifa hospital are writing the names of
children killed on their bodies. Sara Al-Khalidi, mother of four children,
says “The world should know about these children who were murdered by Israel
because they are not numbers but names, stories and dreams killed by the
Israeli occupation in Gaza.”
As
the Al Jazeera article by Lina
Alsaafin and Ruwaida Amer explains
“writing the names of children on their arms or legs is an
attempt to bring the families closure in case their children are killed so that
they are able to bury them in marked graves as opposed to mass graves.”
Israeli
attacks on homes have torn apart bodies making identification impossible.
According
to the Gaza health ministry, 200 bodies are “mangled beyond recognition” and
so “impossible to identify”. Gazan Mohammad Abu Odeh believes Israel deliberately targets children. Indeed
this Israeli policy has been well-documented by Chris Hedges during his
time as correspondent for the New York
Times in Israel and Palestine.
Abu Odeh says that “parents should not have to live through the painful reality
of trying to identify the bodies of their children which have been disfigured
in the most gruesome way by Israeli missiles.”
He
asks “Can anyone in the world bear the thought of what our children are going
through?”
Bombing
of Churches
On
Thursday, October 26, six U.N. special rapporteurs
accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity in Gaza. “There
are no justifications for these crimes and we are horrified by the lack of
action by the international community” they wrote in a statement.
The
U.N. General Assembly has overwhemingly approved a
non-binding resolution calling
for a truce in the Gaza war with 120 countries backing this including France,
Spain, Ireland and Belgium. This has marginalized the United States which
opposed the resolution along with only 13 other countries including the U.K.
John
Kirby, speaking for
the Biden administration, stated that “Israel had every right and
responsibility to defend itself and take the fight to Hamas and its leaders
[who were] sheltering behind civilians in Gaza.”
Turkey’s
PresidentRecep Tayyip Erdoganhas condemned Israel’s bombing and
invasion of Gaza and said that Turkey is preparing to declare Israel “a war
criminal.”
Erdogan has called the west “the main culprit” responsible
for the deaths of civilians in Gaza.

‘Justified
Vengeance’ and The History of Israeli ‘False Flags’(2001-2023):
Palestine Portrayed as ‘The Aggressor’

“We
are going to attack Gaza City very broadly soon,” Israel’s chief military
spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said in a
nationally broadcast address, without giving a timetable for the attack.”
It’s
a criminal undertaking based on Israel’s doctrine of
“Justified Vengeance” which was first formulated in 2001.
(See
below: my January 2009 article published at the very outset of Israel’s
2008-2009 invasion of Gaza under “Operation Cast Led”)
The
“Justified Vengeance” doctrine propounds in no uncertain terms
that (despite its limited
military capabilities) Palestine rather than Israel is “the Aggressor” and
that Israel has the right to defend itself.
It
is now established that the Hamas October 7, 2023 attack was a
False Flag operation carried out by a “faction” within Hamas, in liaison with
Mossad and U.S. intelligence”:
“U.S.
intelligence say they weren’t aware of an
impending Hamas attack.
Did
Netanyahu and his vast military and intelligence apparatus (Mossad
et al) have foreknowledge of the Hamas attack which has resulted in
countless deaths of Israelis and Palestinians.
Was
a carefully formulated Israeli plan to wage an all out war against
Palestinians envisaged prior to the launching by Hamas of “Operation Al-Aqsa
Storm”?
This
was not a failure of Israeli Intelligence, as conveyed by the media. Quite the

The
History of False Flags: “The Green Light to Terror” (1997), The
“Bloodshed as a Justification” to Wage War
The
late Prof
Tanya Reinhart confirms the formulation in 1997 of a False Flag Agenda entitled
“The Green Light to Terror” which consisted in promoting
(engineering) suicide attacks against Israeli civilians, citing “the
Bloodshed as a Justification” to wage war on Palestine:
“…This
is the “green light to terror” theme which the Military Intelligence (Ama”n) has been promoting since 1997, when its anti-Oslo
line was consolidated. This theme was since repeated again and again by
military circles, and eventually became the mantra of Israeli propaganda…
The
blueprint, titled “The Destruction of the Palestinian Authority and
Disarmament of All Armed Forces”, was presented to the Israeli government
by chief of staff Shaul Mofaz,
on July 8 [2001].
The
assault would be launched, at the government’s discretion, after a big
suicide bomb attack in Israel, causing widespread deaths and injuries, citing

Ariel Sharon: “A 1948 Style Solution”
According
to the Prof. Tanya Reinhart; “Mass expulsion could occur at some later stage
of the ground invasion [2002- ], were the Israelis to open up Gaza’s
borders to allow for an exodus of population … Expulsion was referred to
by Ariel Sharon as the “a 1948 style solution”. For Sharon “it is
only necessary to find another state for the Palestinians”. -‘Jordan is
Palestine’ – was the phrase that Sharon coined.” (Tanya
Reinhart, op cit)
The
“Hamas-Mossad Partnership”
What
is now unfolding in Gaza is part of a longstanding intelligence agenda,
which has been on the drawing-board of successive
Israeli governments for more than twenty years. Founded in 1987
with the support of Israel, “The Hamas-Mossad
partnership” is confirmed by Netanyahu:
“Anyone
who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support
bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas. … This is part of
our strategy – to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the
West Bank.” (March 2019 Statement quoted by Haaretz,
October 9, 2023, emphasis added)
“Support”
and “Money” for Hamas
“Transferring
Money to Hamas” on
behalf of Netanyahu is confirmed by a Times of Israel
October 8, 2023 Report:
“Hamas
was treated as a partner to the detriment of the Palestinian Authority to
prevent Abbas from moving towards creating a
Palestinian State. Hamas was promoted from a terrorist group to an organization
with which Israel conducted negotiations through Egypt, and which was
allowed to receive suitcases containing millions of dollars from Qatar through
the Gaza crossings.” (emphasis added)
Benjamin
Netanyahu’s position
defined several years prior to the October 7, 2023 “State of Readiness
For War” consists
in the total appropriation of Palestine Lands
as well as the outright exclusion of the Palestinian people from their homeland:
“These
are the basic lines of the national government headed by me: The Jewish
people have an exclusive and unquestionable right to all areas of the Land of
Israel. The government will promote and develop settlement in all parts of
the Land of Israel — in the Galilee, the Negev, the Golan, Judea and Samaria.”

The
Role of Mossad
The
doctrine of “Justified Vengeance” initiated in 2001, is the cornerstone
of Israel’s intelligence narrative. It provides a justification to carry out
acts of genocide, with the support of the International community, first in
Gaza, then in the West Bank.
“With
an annual budget of about $3billion and 7,000 staff, Mossad is
the second-largest espionage agency in the Western world after the CIA.”
These
official figures are meaningless, intelligence agencies do not reveal the
sources of their funding or the size of their staff (which are in excess of the
figures quoted above).
Mossad (Foreign Intelligence) together with Shin Bet (Domestic National
Security) and Aman (Military Intelligence) is the main actor in
the conduct of “false flag operations”. It’s covert capabilities are extensive. It has over the
years infiltrated both Hamas and the Palestinian
National Authority, It also exerts –in liaison with US intelligence–
control over Al Qaeda operatives, ISIS and Daesh
throughout the Middle East.
Mossad’s mandate is to create “divisions” within the
Palestinian Resistance Movement, while sustaining fear and routine terrorist
false flag events against innocent Israeli civilians, which sustains the
legitimacy of the “Justified Vengeance” narrative.

“From
Auschwitz to Gaza: The History of Mass Murder and Genocide”

As
I am writing, a massive genocidal assault is underway on the stateless people
of Gaza. Most of the 2.3 million people in Gaza were born into this open air
prison where Israel is using its absolute control over what can be brought in
and carried out to deny the inhabitants food, water supplies, electricity, and
fuel.
The
inmates of this tightly packed urban space are being bombed, killing tens of
thousands with the promise of a ground invasion to eliminate those trapped
inside the densely packed and foul urban strip of Mediterranean coast line.
The
US Armed Forces are backing up the many violations of international law that
are underway in an unfolding abomination that clearly belongs in the very Big Leagues
of terrible war crimes. The attack is being pushed forward on the basis of what
is clearly described below as a “pretext” for genocide.
Prof. Michel Chossudovsky cites numerous sources to explain that the government of Israel has
conspired with Hamas, a Muslim entity created and funded by Israel to advance
an imperial strategy of divide-and-conquer among the Palestinians.
That
strategy is meant to divide the government of Palestinians in Gaza from the
Palestinians in the area of the West Bank sometimes described as the Occupied
Territories.
Chossudovsky sees the complicity between Hamas and the
Netanyahu government as the basis of the engineered murder and torture of
Israeli soldiers and civilians.
The
aim of this diabolical scheme is to realize the agenda of clearing out the
inhabitants of Gaza as well as bringing about a US war with Iran.
The
creation of the basis for such a war has for decades been a primary geopolitical
objective of Netanyahu.
Part
of the provocation causing Hamas fighters to break through the Gaza Walls— a
permitted piercing of what is perhaps the most closely monitored barrier in the
world— was the purposeful defilement by Israeli settlers of the al Aqsa Mosque in the days leading up to October 7.
A
subject of much speculation is what happened during the period of many hours
when Israeli security forces were held back from protecting Israeli lives. Much
remains unknown about who did what to whom, and why.
The
purpose of false flags, which will be discussed below, is to create the basis
for mistaken perceptions about what is real and what is contrived.
About
half of the inhabitants of Gaza are children. Christian and Muslim families in
Gaza have large numbers of children to compensate for their propensity to have
short life spans. In a society of huge unemployment, few options are available
to young people seeking a way forward.
When
the activities of the local Hamas government are one of the only work options
available in Gaza, it is hardly surprising that this organization attracts many
who might picture themselves as freedom fighters. Such fighters might well lack
a sense of fair play when confronting those that have jailed them and assailed
them since their birth.
As
I think about the media fabrications concerning 40 beheaded Israeli babies that
never were, I can’t help imagining a huge bombed out area with dead bodies of
hundreds of thousands of Gaza babies and children. For some reason I imagine
these exterminated children nailed up on row after row of crucifixes.
I
picture this obscenity with the knowledge that there happens to be huge
reserves of natural gas off the shores of Gaza. To eliminate the people of Gaza
would be to eliminate a competing claim to the huge treasure trove of potential
energy.

Bureau Chief in Gaza, was reporting live when an Israeli airstrike targeted the
southern Gaza building where his family sheltered, killing his wife, son, daughter, and grandson.
The
news came hours after Axios reported that Secretary
Antony Blinken told
U.S. Jewish leaders he asked Qatar to “turn down the volume on Al Jazeera’s coverage” of the Israeli genocidal campaign in
the Gaza Strip, accusing the network of being “anti-Israel.”
Mondoweiss reached
out to journalists in Gaza who shared their anxiety that their families could
fall victim to punitive shelling solely for doing their job.
“I’ve
started to feel that I’m a danger to those around me,” one journalist
confessed. “I was feeling this from the beginning of the war, since my voice
started being heard… There are so many innocents around me, people that have
nothing to do with me or my writings or my work.”
The
journalist, who remained anonymous for fear of retaliation, said,
“Targeting
someone’s family is more painful than targeting that person only.”
“Maybe,” he added, “this is the message they want to send to every journalist:
‘you aren’t the only one we will target; we can burn your heart by targeting
your family and robbing you of the will to live afterward.’”
Earlier
today, Mohammed Farra, another Palestinian
journalist, received the news that his wife and children were killed in
an Israeli airstrike on Khan Yunis,
while he was positioned in Ramallah, many miles and checkpoints away from
Gaza.
“Any
person whose voice is being heard or is gaining international visibility is
being made to pay the price,” the journalist in Gaza told Mondoweiss. “You can feel the
intense surveillance of anything coming out of Gaza. And if anyone says
anything, even a phrase or a word, that Israel doesn’t want, will be targeted
and have their families targeted.”

This
testimony is consistent with the targeting of students, activists, and everyday
social media users across occupied Jerusalem and 1948 territories and charging
them for incitement over their social media posts.
Since
October 7, the Israeli regime has killed 20 Palestinian journalists in Gaza and
one Lebanese journalist in the south of Lebanon.
El-Dahdouh, a veteran reporter, was recorded kneeling on the
floor, caressing the bloodied face of his 15-year-old son, Mahmoud,
who had aspired to become a journalist.
“They
are exacting their revenge by killing our children,” Dahdouh
said, surrounded by a crew of his peers.
Other
members of his family remain under the rubble.
During
Mondoweiss‘s
conversation with the journalist from Gaza, he recalled an English video
that Dahdouh’s late children had just made and shared
online.
“They
described what was going on in Gaza. They talked about how entire neighborhoods
have been destroyed and how nowhere is safe. They
asked what international law and human rights had to say about this. And they
ended their video with a message: ‘Help us to stay alive.’ And the world failed
them.”

Attack on Israelis Strengthens, Not Weakens, Israel’s Right Wing Political
Elite”

While
many people are deeply saddened by the escalation of violence in the
Arab-Israeli conflict, what’s commonly under-reported is the origin and
funding of Hamas.
The
Hamas attack on Israeli non-combatant civilians was not at all a blow to
Israel’s ruling elite, but, on the contrary, an attack that strengthens their
rule that came at a very convenient time for them.
Hamas,
for Zionist leaders, is controlled opposition. It’s not controlled like a
puppet, but funded and kept in power by Israel because its aims, like those
of the corrupt Palestine Authority,
are to dominate and control ordinary Palestinians in the name of supposedly
standing up against Israel while not doing anything that can actually defeat
Israel.
The
latter would require waging the class war against the billionaire ruling
class of Israel. Hamas and Israel’s leaders need each other;
each helps the other keep a grip on its own people, providing the other a
perfect enemy with which to frighten its “own people” into obedience.
The
Israeli right wing’s seven-decades long strategy has been to use violent
ethnic cleansing against Palestinians (read the details here). The
aim is to make Palestinians so angry at Israel that they can present them as
an existential threat—a bogeyman enemy. Israel’s billionaire ruling class
(yes, it has one just like the United States
does) pretends to be protecting Israeli Jews from this bogeyman enemy.
This
while it uses it to frighten into submission the Israeli working class, who
are oppressed economically. The U.S. media
censors this because the U.S. billionaire ruling class also has a huge motive for
supporting Israel’s ethnic cleansing project.
Failure
to understand this means a failure to understand what is going on today in
Israel/Palestine.

biblical story.
On
October 7, 2023, a group of utterly determined Hamas fighters launched a
sophisticated attack on Israel, showcasing to the world how to apply blitzkrieg
In
the immediate aftermath of the short-lived invasion, leaders of the Western
world quickly condemned the attacks in the strongest words. They promised
Israel “whatever-it-takes” military support and gave the Jewish state literally
a free hand to take any action against the Palestinians it wanted—no matter how
criminal and cruel. U.S. President Joe Biden described Hamas’ attack as an “act
of sheer evil,” echoing language used to condemn Nazism (“absolute evil”).
After
Anthony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, called
for restraint, demanding the “highest standards” to keep civilians out of
harm’s way, social media messages from the U.S. Department of State to the same
purport were quickly deleted. Western leaders justified their unconditional
support for Israel by pointing to the right of Israel to “defend itself.”
However,
even though a state clearly has the right (and obligation) to protect its
borders and citizens, it should never be given carte blanche to act as it pleases, in contempt of international
law, as Israel decided to do in the given crisis. Using a “gloves-off”
approach, the Jewish state truly went berserk and committed an already long
series and wide gamut of war crimes within a few days only. In particular, the
occupation regime embarked on a systematic campaign of collective punishment
and revenge killings, which are prohibited under International Humanitarian
Law.
For
example, Israel used the most modern warplanes (a far cry from Hamas’s
oftentimes home-made weapons) to pulverize densely populated districts in the
Gaza Strip on a scale unwitnessed before in
Palestine. Essentially resorting to carpet bombing, it thus killed a reported
2,000 innocent civilians, who were not implicated in any crimes.
Nowadays,
people are shocked when they hear about such tactics having been used during
the Second World War. Back then, occupation forces routinely killed unarmed
villagers in return for attacks by partisans. But Israel’s action—at a
significantly larger scale—does not cause moral scruples among Western leaders
and mainstream journalists.
While Western media outlet such as The Economist magazine described Hamas’s action as “carnage.”
Israel was reported to conduct “retaliatory strikes.” Israelis are said to be
“murdered,” while Palestinian are just “dead.”
Israeli
Defense Forces (IDF) announced that on one day alone (October 11, 2023), it
carried out 2,400 strikes on “Hamas targets.” As revealed by before-and-after
satellite pictures (see Figure 1), the result of the scorched-earth policy is
the wanton destruction of an entire city, an act that is categorized as a war
crime. According to eyewitnesses, no road in Gaza is left undamaged.

program across regions of Ukraine occupied or reintegrated into Russia and in

An unnamed SBU counter-intelligence officer is quoted as saying that it
made him uncomfortable that “marginal figures” were being targeted in
operations that were designed “to impress the president rather than bring

The same officer noted that Ukraine’s assassination campaign was being

History: Israel’s Move to Destroy the Palestinian
Authority Is a Calculated Plan, Long in the Making.

In mainstream
political discourse, Israel's recent atrocities are described as 'retaliatory acts'
- answering the last wave of terror attacks on Israeli civilians. But in fact,
this 'retaliation' had been carefully prepared long before.
Already in October 2000, at the outset of the Palestinian uprising,
military circles were ready with detailed operative plans to topple Arafat and
the Palestinian Authority. This was before the Palestinian terror attacks
started. (The first attack on Israeli civilians was on November 3, 2000, in a
market in Jerusalem).
A document prepared by the security services, at the request of then PM
Barak, stated on October 15, 2000 that
“Arafat, the person, is a severe threat to the security of the state [of
Israel] and the damage which will result from his disappearance is less than
the damage caused by his existence”. (Details of the document were published in
Ma’ariv, July 6, 2001.)
The operative plan, known as ‘Fields of Thorns’
had been prepared back in 1996, and was then updated during the Intifada. (Amir Oren, Ha’aretz, Nov.
23, 2001). The plan includes everything that Israel has been executing lately,
and more.(1)
The document,
informally referred to as the “White Book”, was prepared by Barak’s aid, Danny Yatom.(2) According to the “White Book”, Arafat’s present
crime – “orchestrating the Intifada”, is just the last in a long chain of
proofs that he has never deserted the “option of violence and ‘struggle'”.
“As early as
Arafat’s own speech on the White House lawn, on September 13, 1993, there were
indications that for him, the D.O.P. [declaration of principles] did not
necessarily signify an end to the conflict. He did not, at any point,
relinquish his uniform, symbolic of his status as a revolutionary commander”
(Section 2). This uniform, incidentally, is the only ‘indication’ that the
report cites, of Arafat’s hidden intentions, on that occasion.
A large section of
the document is devoted to establishing Arafat’s “ambivalence and compliance”
regarding terror.
“In March 1997 there
was once again more than a hint of a ‘Green Light’ from Arafat to the Hamas,
prior to the bombing in Tel Aviv… This is implicit in the statement made by a
Hamas-affiliated member of Arafat’s Cabinet, Imad Faluji, to an American paper (Miami Herald, April 5,
1997).”
No further hints are
provided regarding how this links Arafat to that bombing, but this is the
“green light to terror” theme which the Military Intelligence (Ama”n) has been promoting since 1997, when its anti-Oslo
line was consolidated. This theme was since repeated again and again by
military circles, and eventually became the mantra of Israeli propaganda –
Arafat is still a terrorist and is personally responsible for the acts of all
groups, from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad to Hizbollah.
The blueprint,
titled “The Destruction of the Palestinian Authority and Disarmament of All
Armed Forces”, was presented to the Israeli government by chief of staff Shaul Mofaz, on July 8.
The assault would be launched, at the government’s discretion, after a big
suicide bomb attack in Israel, causing widespread deaths and injuries, citing
the bloodshed as justification.
Many in Israel
suspect that the assassination of the Hamas terrorist Mahmoud
Abu Hanoud, just when the Hamas was respecting for
two months its agreement with Arafat not to attack inside Israel, was designed
to create the appropriate ‘bloodshed justification’, at the eve of Sharon’s
visit to the US. (Alex Fishman – senior security correspondent of ‘Yediot’ – noted that “whoever decided upon the liquidation
of Abu Hanoud knew in advance that would be the
price.
The subject was
extensively discussed both by Israel’s military echelon and its political one,
before it was decided to carry out the liquidation” (Yediot
Aharonot, Nov. 25, 2001)).
Israel’s moves to
destroy the PA, thus, cannot be viewed as a spontaneous ‘act of retaliation’.
It is a calculated plan, long in the making. The execution requires, first,
weakening the resistance of the Palestinians, which Israel has been doing systematically
since October 2000, through killing, bombarding of infrastructure, imprisoning
people in their hometowns, and bringing them close to starvation. All this,
while waiting for the international conditions to ‘ripen’ for the more
‘advanced’ steps of the plan.
Now the conditions
seem to have ‘ripened’. In the power-drunk political atmosphere in the US,
anything goes.
If at first it
seemed that the US will try to keep the Arab world on its side by some tokens
of persuasion, as it did during the Gulf war, it is now clear that they
couldn’t care less. US policy is no longer based on building coalitions or
investing in persuasion, but on sheer force.
The smashing
‘victory’ in Afghanistan has sent a clear message to the Third-World that
nothing can stop the US from targeting any nation for annihilation.
They seem to believe
that the most sophisticated weapons of the twenty-first century, combined
with total absence of any considerations of moral principles, international
law, or public opinion, can sustain them as the sole rulers of the world
forever. From now on, fear should be the sufficient condition for obedience.
The US hawks, who push to expand the war to Iraq and further, view Israel
as an asset – There are few regimes in the world like Israel, so
eager to risk the life of their citizens for some new regional war.
As Prof. Alain Joxe, head of the French CIRPES (peace and strategic
studies) has put it in Le Monde,
“the American
leadership is presently shaped by dangerous right wing Southern extremists, who
seek to use Israel as an offensive tool to destabilize the whole Middle East
area” (December 17, 2001).
The same hawks are
also talking about expanding the future war zone to targets on Israel’s agenda,
like Hizbollah and Syria.
Under these
circumstances, Sharon got his green light in Washington. As the Israeli media
keeps raving, “Bush is fed up with this character [Arafat]”,
“Powell said that
Arafat must stop with his lies” (Barnea and Schiffer, ‘Yediot’, December 7,
2001).
As Arafat hides in
his Bunker, Israeli F-16 bombers plough the sky, and Israel’s brutality is
generating, every day, new desperate human bombs, the US, accompanied for a
while by the European union, keep urging Arafat to
“act”.
Undo the Oslo
Arrangements
But what is the
rationale behind Israel’s systematic drive to eliminate the Palestinian
Authority and undo the Oslo arrangements? It certainly cannot be based on
‘disappointment’ with Arafat’s performance, as is commonly claimed. The fact of
the matter is that from the perspective of Israel’s interests in maintaining
the occupation, Arafat did fulfill Israel’s expectations all these last years.
As far as Israeli
security goes, there is nothing further from the truth then the fake
accusations in the “White Book”, or subsequent Israeli propaganda. To take just
one example, in 1997 – the year mentioned in the “White Book” as an instance of
Arafat’s “green light to terror” – a ‘security agreement’ was signed between
Israel and the Palestinian authority, under the auspices of the head of the Tel
Aviv station of the CIA, Stan Muskovitz.
The agreement
commits the PA to take active care of the security of Israel – to fight:
“the
terrorists, the terrorist base, and the environmental conditions leading to
support of terror” in cooperation with Israel, including “mutual exchange of
information, ideas, and military cooperation” (clause 1). [Translated
from the Hebrew text, Ha’aretz December 12, 1997].
Arafat’s security
services carried out this job faithfully, with assassinations of Hamas terrorists
(disguised as ‘accidents’), and arrests of Hamas political leaders.(3)
Ample information
was published in the Israeli media regarding these activities, and ‘security
sources’ were full of praises for Arafat’s achievements. E.g. Ami Ayalon, then head of the Israeli secret service (Shab”ak), announced, in the government meeting on April 5,
1998 that “Arafat is doing his job – he is fighting terror and puts all his
weight against the Hamas” (Ha’aretz, April 6, 1998).
The rate of success of the Israeli security services in containing terror was
never higher than that of Arafat; in fact, much lower.
In left and critical
circles, one can hardly find compassion for Arafat’s personal fate (as opposed
to the tragedy of the Palestinian people). As David Hirst
writes in The Guardian, when Arafat returned to the occupied territories, in
1994,
“he
came as collaborator as much as liberator. For the Israelis, security – theirs,
not the Palestinians’ – was the be-all and end-all of Oslo. His job was to
supply it on their behalf. But he could only sustain the collaborator’s role if
he won the political quid pro quo which, through a series of ‘interim
agreements’ leading to ‘final status’, was supposedly to come his way. He never
could. . . [Along the road], he acquiesced in accumulating concessions that
only widened the gulf between what he was actually achieving and what he
assured his people he would achieve, by this method, in the end. He was Mr.
Palestine still, with a charisma and historical legitimacy all his own. But he
was proving to be grievously wanting in that other great and complementary
task, building his state-in-the-making. Economic misery, corruption, abuse of
human rights, the creation of a vast apparatus of repression – all these
flowed, wholly or in part, from the Authority over which he presided.” (Hirst, “Arafat’s last stand?” The
Guardian, December 14, 2001).
But from the
perspective of the Israeli occupation, all this means
that the Oslo plan was, essentially, successful. Arafat did
manage, through harsh means of oppression, to contain the frustration of his
people, and guarantee the safety of the settlers, as Israel continued
undisturbed to build new settlements and appropriate more Palestinian land.
The oppressive
machinery, the various security forces of Arafat, were formed and trained in
collaboration with Israel. Much energy and resources were put into building
this complex Oslo apparatus. It is often admitted that the Israeli security
forces cannot manage to prevent terror any better than Arafat can. Why, then,
was the military and political echelon so determined to destroy all this
already in October 2000, even before the terror waves started? Answering this
requires some look at the history.

Why is it so urgent
for them to topple Arafat?
Shabtai Shavit, former head of the Security Service (‘Mossad’), who is not bound by restraints posed on official
sources, explains this openly:
“In the thirty something
years that he [Arafat] leads, he managed to reach real achievements in the
political and international sphere… He got the Nobel peace prize, and in a
single phone call, he can obtain a meeting with every leader in the world.
There is nobody in the Palestinian gallery that can enter his shoes in this
context of international status. If they [the Palestinians] will lose this
gain, for us, this is a huge achievement. The Palestinian issue will get off
the international agenda.”

Their immediate goal
is to get the Palestinians off the international agenda, so slaughter,
starvation, forced evacuation and ‘migration’ can continue undisturbed,
leading, possibly, to the final realization of Sharon’s long standing vision,

: personne ne peux approuver les massacres d'où qu'ils viennent, mais on peut se
poser la question : Qui tire les ficelles? Qui a l'intérêt que les choses se
