by Sophie Barthes and starring Mia Wasikowska
film
produced in 2014
“Madame
Bovary: Mœurs de province” is a novel by French
writer Gustave Flaubert, published in 1857.
This
film, directed
by Sophie Barthes, was produced 2014. It is the story the greed and ambition of
a woman who lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and
emptiness of provincial life. Her predatory, short-sighted ambitions and her
self-destructive end stand as a lesson for all of us.
When
the novel was first serialized in Revue
de Paris between 1 October and 15 December 1856, public prosecutors
attacked the novel for obscenity. The resulting trial in January 1857 made the
story notorious. After Flaubert's acquittal on 7 February 1857, Madame Bovary became a bestseller in
April 1857 when it was published in two volumes. A seminal work of literary
realism, the novel is now considered Flaubert's masterpiece, and one of the
most influential literary works in history.

We
live in a historical period where human life has become very cheap, according to the
values promoted by monopoly capitalist culture. It is once again a time when
old men declare wars and young men and women die in them. To accomplish this,
the ruling class must disarm the general population so that it has no defenses to
protect itself against this manipulation, and no understanding that it is being
played in a sinister game - a sadistic casino, where the big winners are always the owners, who are too big to fail, and the losers are the always the players, who are kept isolated, alienated, and ignorant.
It is not time to wake up if you are preparing for the BIG SLEEP, but if you wish to live and see a better life for your family and friends (if you are permitted to have this luxury today) and for all of humanity, you must wake up now and examine the structure you are living in, and discover how the interrelationships have made you what you are. The trees together, indeed, make a forest and the processes that govern this forest will determine your existence and the existence of all of us. Your passive acceptance will precipitate your demise, and that of your social class which has been targeted for destruction not by your neighbors and peers, but by your owners.

“Israel’s Rafah Ground
Invasion – Zionist War Against Islam Is About to
Explode”
by Joachim
Hagopian
The deadliest ever Israeli bombardment by land,
sea and air on Rafah, Gaza Strip’s southernmost
border city, took place while America was sidetracked with Superbowl
Sunday festivities. On Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went on ABC News “This Week”
to announce:
Victory is within reach. We’re going to do it. We’re
going to get the remaining Hamas terrorist battalions in Rafah,
which is the last bastion, but we’re going to do it.
Then overnight on Monday February 12th,
anywhere from over 100 to 164 Palestinians were reportedly murdered by Israeli
attacks. International alarm and condemnation of the Israeli hardline government is growing by the day.
Simultaneously accompanied by IDF airstrikes,
offshore IDF ship launched assaults and IDF artillery attacks from inside
Israel, an IDF special forces operation launched an incursion in Rafah during the early morning hours Monday local time to
rescue two Israeli hostages in Rafah, with
initial reports stating 37 Palestinians were killed. At the same time Israeli
tanks, armored personnel carriers and armored engineering vehicles are moving
further into Gaza’s next kill zone Rafah.
Al Jazeera’s
contributing journalist Ahmed Abdullah Mohsen as
an eyewitness in Rafah reported:
The screaming and wailing nearly drowned out the
warplanes that covered the sky, dropping barrages in a fiery belt that crushed
the bodies of the displaced in their tents. About 20 minutes of explosions lit
the night like something from an artificial Hollywood film.
While Biden and Blinken have
“strongly advised” Netanyahu to tone down civilian Palestinian deaths and most
recently not initiate Bibi’s IDF ground invasion into
Rafah, according to several unnamed sources quoted by
NBC
News on
February 12th, on at least three occasions Biden called Netanyahu
“an asshole,” venting his mounting frustration towards Bibi
the Butcher, undoubtedly wrecking Biden’s reelection campaign.
Last Thursday even prior to the Rafah
blitzkrieg, Biden went public saying Israel’s latest actions are “over the top.” His bid to stay in the White House
already was dealt a lethal blow last week when special counsel Robert Hur’s report leaked Biden too mentally incompetent to
stand trial for willfully retaining illegal classified documents. Essentially,
Biden has been thrown under the bus by the same Deep State that installed him
as Imposter-in-Thief. Using the Texas State Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick’s
phraseology posted last Friday on X:
I’ve said for over a year many times that Joe Biden
would not be on the ticket and Michelle Obama would be the likely nominee. It’s
clear the Democrat deep state run by Barack Obama knew they had to take him
down to give them a chance in November.
Warmongering Washington now finds itself helplessly
floundering, standing up for “Israel’s right to defend itself no matter what,”
stuck in a downward freefall spiral paralleling its same humiliating, disastrous
policy standing up for the Ukraine debacle. Quite a few pay grades higher than
Obama sits the City of London atop this Deep State food chain, throwing the US
and entire West under the bus.
For months Israel issued directives to Palestinian
residents living in north and central Gaza to flee their homes seeking shelter
in south Gaza, where now up to 1.5 million of Gaza’s total 2.3 million Palestinians are now
refugees, helplessly trapped in Rafah as defenseless
sitting duck targets in the IDF crosshairs.
The Jewish State’s coldblooded game plan all along
has been to force Palestinians to run for their lives south out of Gaza, and in
the end, exiled to Egypt’s Sinai Desert. Yet Egypt has emphatically warned
Israel against this sinister ethnic purge as totally unacceptable, driving
Palestinians from their ancient Gaza homeland into Egypt.
Now,
with no place for Palestinians to safely shelter in place, Israel is fast
preparing to launch its major offensive into Rafah
right at Egypt’s border to flood desperate refugees completely out of Gaza. In one fell swoop for decades, Israel
has awaited this outcome as its “final solution” to its “Palestinian problem,”
free to then steal their vast gas and oil reserves and build a Gaza canal shortcutting Egypt’s Suez Canal.
The peace treaty that Egypt and Israel signed 45
years ago today is in total jeopardy in near shreds.
READ MORE: An All-out War May Have Just Begun in the
Middle East
The Cairo government warned Netanyahu if IDF ground forces invade Rafah as clear violation of its peace agreement with Egypt,
rendering it null and void, it risks opening up yet another warfront at
Israel’s southern border, after almost a half century of peace with its Arab
neighbor.
Also, Egypt has been suffering economically from
this Gaza war with its plummeting Suez Canal revenue down by a whopping 30%.
Hence, Egypt is warning Israel of “grave consequences,” further echoed by
regional Islamic powers Iran’s “severe consequences” and Saudi Arabia’s “very serious repercussions.”
The stakes are growing higher each passing day as
Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border has stepped up its campaign from southern
Lebanon against genocidal Israel while Houthi drone and missile attacks in the Red Sea
target US naval warships as well as commercial cargo vessels continue unabated.
This Middle East powder keg is ready to burst into full-scale war between
Israel and its genocidal accomplice the US, dragged into fighting yet another
Greater Israel Project war that has all the earmarks for Armageddon. Israel continues to defy all warnings from the US, UN and the
International Criminal Court.
With the united Arab Islamic world’s strengthening strategic alliance with
Russia and China, and its nonstop warnings and threats to Israel all unheeded,
by the day the ominous risk of these deeply disturbing developments is growing
exponentially.
As world pariahs Israel and US alienate themselves before the entire
planet, digging their irreversible grave, lined up on the wrong side of
history, they’ve been perpetrating genocide in Gaza for four straight months. Arab nations
showing remarkable restraint not to react to their provocations to widen the
regional conflict, have been increasingly vocal in
their unified disapproval. But with hostilities growing at Israel’s northern
border with Lebanon, now at the southern border with Egypt, and the
northeastern border
with Syria, the Islamic world is preparing a
contingency plan ultimately to crush Israel if genocide continues unchanged.
Knowing without war his political life is terminally over, Bibi
the Butcher has repeatedly rejected all ceasefire proposals and demands.
Meanwhile, the US without an exit strategy, has feebly allowed itself to be
dragged deeper into a quagmire, daily growing into a wider regional conflict.
On Sunday Netanyahu illogically claimed “enough” of
the 132 remaining Israeli hostages still alive more than justify continuing the
war.
In response, a Hamas leader said if Israel launches
its intended ground invasion in Rafah, it would “blow
up” all hostage exchange negotiation.
Despite repeated warnings against the Rafah invasion, Netanyahu instructed his IDF and security
forces to come up with a plan to evacuate over one million Palestinian refugees
in Rafah to pave the way for Israel’s ground
offensive, ostensibly to destroy four well-fortified Hamas battalions
entrenched in the city. With the situation growing tenser by the day, also on Sunday,
Egypt spoke of “dire consequences” for Israel if Bibi
orders his assault on Rafah. The Egyptian foreign ministry stated:
Egypt called for the necessity of uniting all
international and regional efforts to prevent the targeting of the Palestinian
city of Rafah.
It’s becoming ever-so dangerously clearer, when IDF
inevitably does fully invade Rafah, the Arab world is
bound to finally strike back and at that pivotal moment World War III will
likely be officially activated.

“Bibi’s Endgame: A Ghastly
Humanitarian Crisis Followed by Forced Expulsion”
by
Mike Whitney
Having seized upon
the October 7 attacks as a pretext, Israel has moved to implement a long-term
plan to render Gaza uninhabitable and either kill or expel its population. The
assault on Rafah will mark a new stage in this vast
crime. (Andre
Damon, World Socialist Web Site)
On Friday, Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to prepare a plan for
the forced expulsion of Palestinians located in Rafah,
the southernmost city in Gaza where over 1.3 million displaced civilians have
taken refuge in tent cities. The announcement was met with howls of protest
from political leaders and human rights groups around the world who understand
that Israel is now implementing the final phase of its ethnic cleansing
operation which began on October 7. Despite the public outcry and mounting
opposition, Netanyahu is moving ahead with his plan to drive the non-Jewish
population from their historic homeland in order to establish a permanent
Jewish majority on Palestinian territory. This is from an article at Politico:
On Friday, Netanyahu
announced he had ordered defense forces to “submit to the cabinet a dual plan
for both evacuating the population and bringing down the battalions” ahead of
an “intensive operation.”…
In preparation of the
assault, Israeli forces have ramped up their airstrikes and shelling on the
southern Gaza metropolis…. Netanyahu’s plans raised alarm among aid agencies
and world leaders alike, who fear the consequences of a ground assault on a
city already overcrowded with civilians…
United Nations
Secretary-General António Guterres
expressed similar sentiments, saying that an operation in Rafah
would “exponentially increase what is already a humanitarian nightmare with untold
regional consequences.”
Netanyahu orders Rafah evacuation ahead of expected
ground invasion, Politico
READ MORE: Middle East:
Arsonists Shout “Fire”
Keep in mind,
Netanyahu is using a fully-equipped, state-of-the-art military to subdue an
unarmed civilian population. This is not a war in any traditional sense of
the word. The Palestinians are being terrorized into compliance and forced at
gunpoint to move from one location to another.
Now they are going to
be driven from the urban area in Rafah to a barren
plain that is devoid of food, water or protection from the elements. The
objective of this maneuver is to create a humanitarian crisis so colossal that
foreign leaders will be forced to enact an emergency resettlement program that
will address the refugee problem while absolving Israel of any legal
responsibility. This is from the Telegraph
on Saturday:
Netanyahu said a
“massive operation” is needed in Rafah, adding that
he has asked security officials to present a “double plan” that would encompass
civilian evacuations …
It comes as Israel on
Friday bombed targets in Rafah, expanding its Gaza
ground offensive to the densely populated southern city where more than half of
the territory’s 2.3 million people have sought refuge.
Airstrikes overnight
and into Friday hit two residential buildings in Rafah,
while two other sites were bombed in central Gaza, including one that damaged a
kindergarten-turned-shelter for displaced Palestinians. Twenty-two people were
killed, according to AP journalists who saw the bodies arriving at hospitals. Netanyahu
orders Rafah evacuation plan, Telegraph
The reason Israel continues to kill
non-combatants who are in-no-way connected to Hamas, is because it convinces
everyone else that the bombing is “indiscriminate” which, in turn, suggests
that the perpetrator is a deranged madman driven by irrational hatred.
This is how one
terrorizes the public into doing whatever is demanded of them. We expect that
much of Israel’s current pysops in Gaza was
meticulously worked out with a battery of behavioral psychologists long before
the first bomb was dropped, perhaps, years before the Hamas attack on October
7.
It’s also worth
noting, that Israel’s unexpected blitz on Rafah comes
on the heels of explicit promises from senior-level Israeli officials that
Palestinians who willingly left their homes in the North would find safety in
the South.
Now these same people are being pelted with
bombs and pushed into the desert where their prospects for survival are dismal
at best.
We can only conclude
that the reason the Palestinians are being treated so horribly is because they
are part of the non-Jewish minority who are widely regarded as inferior to the
Israeli Jews.
The Palestinians are
not being expelled because they pose a national security threat but because
they are more prolific than the Jews who want to maintain a sizable majority
whatever the cost. In other words, the Palestinians are not being deported for
something they’ve done but for who they are. This is from Reuters:
Egypt is moving to
avert a mass exodus from the Gaza Strip into its Sinai Peninsula… Israel’s
assault on Gaza has caused alarm in Egypt, which has urged Israel to provide
safe passage for civilians from the enclave rather than encouraging them to
flee southwest towards Sinai….
Egypt has sent about
40 tanks and armoured personnel carriers to
northeastern Sinai within the past two weeks as part of a series of measures to
bolster security on its border with Gaza….The military has also taken up new
positions close to the border, running patrols to monitor the area…
Rafah is
the sole possible crossing point into Sinai for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.
The rest of the densely populated strip is surrounded by the sea,
and by Israel…
On Tuesday, the
Israeli military revised a recommendation by one of its spokespeople that
Palestinians fleeing its air strikes in Gaza head to Egypt. Egypt
moves to prevent exodus of Palestinians from besieged Gaza, Reuters
There it is in black
and white. Israel is going to drive the Palestinians into the desert, create a
ghastly humanitarian crisis, and eventually force the majority of them across
the border and into Egypt. This is Netanyahu’s endgame, a Jewish-only homeland
from the River to the Sea.
Who will stop him?

“Removal of Palestinians in Rafah
‘a genocidal act’”
https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/maureen-clare-murphy/removal-palestinians-rafah-genocidal-act
by Maureen Clare Murphy
Israel’s
stated plan to forcibly transfer more than 1.4 million Palestinians in Rafah “amounts to a continuing Nakba,
and a genocidal act,” three human rights groups said on Monday, urging
immediate international intervention.
Rafah, located in southern Gaza along the
border with Egypt, endured some of the deadliest hours of Israel’s military
offensive, now in its fifth month, in the early hours of Monday.
More than 28,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been
killed since 7 October, with thousands more missing under the rubble. An untold
number of Palestinians have died from hunger and disease in a secondary wave of
mortality resulting from Israel’s military offensive and siege.
The vast majority of Gaza’s population of 2.3
million people have been displaced, many of them repeatedly, and most are now
sheltering in Rafah in inhumane conditions.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, has
repeatedly threatened to expand the military offensive in Rafah
in recent days, raising
international alarm over the unprecedented bloodshed and mass expulsion
that would all but surely entail.
At least 68 Palestinians, including 19 children and
13 women, were killed during some two hours of bombing early Monday, according
to Al-Haq, Al Mezan and the
Palestinian Center for Human Rights. The Palestinian Authority’s official
television station said that 74 people were killed in the Rafah
strikes, according to
Reuters.

“‘Too little, too late’: UN genocide office breaks
silence on Gaza”
Human
rights organizations accuse UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide
Alice Wairimu Nderitu of
dereliction of duty for ignoring Israel’s mass atrocities in Gaza. Luiz Rampelotto ZUMA Press Wire
by
Ali Abunimah
The UN
secretary-general’s special adviser on preventing genocide has finally broken
her months-long silence about Israel’s ongoing campaign of extermination and
destruction in Gaza.
But the belated response from Alice Wairimu Nderitu has done little
to satisfy Palestinian human rights defenders who have called on her boss,
Secretary-General António Guterres,
to launch an investigation into the “dereliction of her duties and
responsibilities demanded by her mandate.”
Nderitu last week issued her first statement on
the situation in Gaza since one in October that was sharply criticized for its strong pro-Israel bias.
In her release on 9 February, Nderitu
“reiterates” her pro-Israel statement from October, but in addition says she
“echoes” a statement from Guterres’ office last month
“taking note” of the International Court of Justice ruling ordering Israel to halt what the judges plausibly
found to be a genocide.
But Nderitu’s response is
being described as too little too late.
“This statement underscores the failure of the
special adviser on the prevention of genocide to meaningfully fulfill her
mandate without biases or double standards,” the Gaza-based Palestinian human
rights group Al Mezan said.
“It also disregards 100,000 Palestinians killed,
injured or missing under rubble in Gaza over the past four months.”

“Defunding UNRWA: The Last Phase of Israeli Genocide”
https://www.counterpunch.org/2024/02/14/defunding-unrwa-the-last-phase-of-israeli-genocide/
by
Jamal Kanj
International
leaders who lined up to pledge their support for Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu following the largest open-air prison break on October 7,
2023 had paved the way for the ensued Israeli war of genocide. Now, the suspension
of funding to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) for the
Palestinian refugees, complements Netanyahu’s physical
genocide by exacerbating the looming Israeli-made famine and the hardship for
the 2.3 million civilians.
UNRWA was created by the UN General Assembly in 1950
to provide Palestinian refugees with humanitarian services including schools,
health clinics and other social services. The hasty freezing of financial aid by the US and other donor countries
without first conducting independent investigations into the veracity of
Israeli claims against UNRWA employees is cabalistic, adds to the Israeli
blockade and deepens the suffering of the Gaza civilians.
Sky News, who have reviewed
the Israeli dossier on the alleged “evidence” against UNRWA’s staff, has stated
that it “has not seen proof of and many of the claims, even if true,
do not directly implicate UNRWA.” Nevertheless, the Agency’s
Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini summarily
terminated the accused, without due process, possibly hoping to avert the very
hyperbole reaction from the donor countries.
Meanwhile, the imprudent decision to halt funding
for the largest and oldest UN agency serving Palestinians would likely lead to
the malnourishment of young children. This decision will also impede UNRWA’s
ability to deliver crucial humanitarian assistance to the 2 million displaced
civilians, including 17,000 children who are unaccompanied or have been
separated from their parents as a result of the Israeli pogrom in Gaza.
After all the damage is done, it may very well be
that the Israeli claims against the UNRWA employees are either exaggerated or
unfounded. It wouldn’t be different than the debunked Israeli disinformation regarding decapitated children, rape,
sexual violence, and mutilation of women reported by the Israeli daily
newspaper Haaretz on the October 7 events.
Having said that, even if Israeli allegations
against a handful of low-level individuals held some validity, why should UNRWA
be responsible for a conduct carried out by employees outside their working
hours, and not associated with their work duties? In fact, in the more than 100
days of the Israel orgy of slaughter, UNRWA has lost 152 employees, a
staggering 1300 percent more than the number of the accused staff. Keeping this
in mind, one must question whether donor nations and UNRWA’s Commissioner
considered the possibility that these allegations could be an Israeli gambit to
deflect from its responsibility for murdering 152 UNRWA employees.
Now, let’s examine how donor nations responded to a
sister UN organization, the Peacekeeping force, when staff faced accusations of
misconduct. In 2021, the UN Secretary-General concluded that it was credible
that 450 members of the Peacekeeping force in Gabon were guilty of child rape and sexual exploitation. Unlike UNRWA, however, the US and other
donors did not suspend funding to the UN agency when reports of sexual abuse
emerged, more importantly, they continued the funding
even after the allegations were verified. Canada, for example, did not freeze
its aid even after its own investigation accused the UN of “‘glaring’ accountability gaps” in handling sexually abusing people
they’ve been sent to protect.
Yet, immediately after Israel raised, yet to be
verified, allegations against a very few of UNRWA staff, Canada and other
donors preempted any investigation and froze funding to an organization that
currently provides vital humanitarian assistance to a population enduring siege
and relentless bombing.
As in the Western hypocrisy case on the war of
genocide in Gaza, the incongruence response to the two UN Agencies reveals that
Western virtue is gaged by the identity of the victim
and victimizer. In response to the more than 2000 allegations of sexual abuse, the accusers were from Africa and
Haiti. In the second case, the unverified allegations against the 12 individuals
came from Israel. The disparity in the two UN cases is a stark illustration of
the evident Western bias, and how it’s driven by the victims/victimizers’
racial characteristics rather than a commitment to genuine fairness.

“Pre-emptive Nuclear War: The Role of Israel in
Triggering an Attack on Iran”
Author’s Introduction and Update
In a recent article entitled “A Planned US-Israeli Attack
on Iran is Contemplated” I focussed
on how Israel’s criminal attack on the People of Palestine could evolve towards
an extended Middle East War.
At the time of writing, US-NATO war ships
–including two aircraft carriers, combat planes, not to mention a nuclear
submarine– are deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, all of
which are intended to confront what both Western politicians and the media casually
describe as “Palestine’s Aggression against the Jewish State”.
“Israel ranks” as “the 4th strongest military” after Russia, the U.S and China.
Ask yourself: Why on earth would Israel need the support of
U.S. aircraft carriers to lead a genocide against
the Palestinians who are fighting for their lives with limited
military capabilities.
Is the U.S. intent
upon triggering a broader war?
“U.S. Warns
Hezbollah, Iran. It Will intervene if they Escalate”
Who is
“Escalating”? The Pentagon has already intimated that it will attack Iran
and Lebanon, “If they Escalate”. Is the Pentagon
Seeking to Trigger one or more “False Flags”?
Times of Israel,
November 9, 2023
Also of significance
(less than 4 months prior to October 7, 2023) is the adoption on June 27,
2023 of the US Congress Resolution (H. RES. 559) which Accuses Iran
of Possessing Nuclear Weapons. H.RES 559 allows the use of force against
Iran, intimating that Iran has Nuclear Weapons.
Whereas Iran is
tagged (without a shred of evidence) as a Nuclear Power by the U.S. Congress,
Washington fails to acknowledge that Israel is an undeclared nuclear
power.

"Iran’s former atomic energy chief is essentially hinting that
Tehran has all the pieces of a nuclear weapon in place but disassembled," Taleblu said. "This commentary should be raising red
flags for anyone who thought diversion of fissile material was the only thing
that needed to be prevented and accounted for with international
monitoring."
"The quiet part out loud here is that Tehran
does not fear the Biden administration’s response to these claims," Taleblu stressed. "By tipping their hand about
mastered but dispersed nuclear capabilities, Iranian officials may be gunning
for a nuclear sweet spot: benefiting from the deterrent dividends of a nuclear
weapon without the political and military costs of weaponization."

“Empty words, deadly bombs”

Michael F. Brown
Nearly
20 years ago, I ran into then-Congressman Chris Van Hollen
in a grocery store just south of American University in Washington, DC. Ghada Ageel, my former Arabic
teacher in Gaza, then on a US speaking tour, was with me.
I introduced them and, as I recall, we had a brief
conversation about Gaza and the lack of freedom for Palestinians. He listened
intently and then went on his way.
Van Hollen, now a US
senator representing the state of Maryland, has every reason to understand
Palestinians’ oppression at the hands of Israel and the US. He was born in
Pakistan and spent part of his early life there and in Turkey, India and Sri Lanka.
His parents worked in ambassadorial roles, the State Department and CIA so it’s
difficult to know exactly what they conveyed, but he did attend Swarthmore
College, a Quaker school in Pennsylvania.
Yet too frequently when US politicians appear
willing to stand up for Palestinian rights, they turn around and undercut Palestinians.
Van Hollen is among their
number, quite possibly among the worst of the supposed friends. He didn’t
simply undercut Palestinians with a recent vote, but gave a helping hand to
Israeli leaders he acknowledges are war criminals.
How did this develop?

“Yemen's Unending Nightmare: The Hidden Consequences
of US and UK Airstrikes”
https://www.mintpressnews.com/yemen-unending-nightmare-hidden-consequences-us-uk-airstrikes/286769/
by
Ahmed Abdulkareem
When
confronted with international appeals for humanitarian aid due to the ongoing
crises in Gaza and Yemen, the United States and the United Kingdom have chosen
instead to turn Yemen’s Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden into a combat zone,
initiating an ariel bombing campaign against the
war-torn country already suffering immensely from nine years of deadly conflict
spearheaded by Saudi Arabia and backed by the U.S.
For weeks, U.S. and British naval vessels have been
perched on the outskirts of Yemen’s territorial waters in the Red Sea, not only
to protect ships carrying goods to Israel but to launch a series of airstrikes
against Yemen, the poorest country in the world. In recent weeks, at least 320
airstrikes have been launched by warplanes that seem never to leave the skies
over Yemen’s major cities. The latest strikes hit Friday morning, targeting Al-Jabana, Al-Taif, and Al-Kathib and followed renewed calls by U.S. officials for
regional actors not to escalate conflict in the Middle East.
According to Yemeni citizens who spoke to MintPress, the U.S. bombing campaign, which has struck
targets in crowded residential neighborhoods, is the last thing that Yemenis
expected. Twenty-seven-year-odl Ibrahim al-Nahari lives with his family near Hodeida International
Airport, which was targeted by US airstrikes on Monday afternoon. He said of
the bombings: “I never expected we would be attacked because of our solidarity
with hungry people in Gaza. Are these America’s morals?”
Last Monday, U.S. airstrikes targeted Yemen’s Al-Katnaib Coast Park, frequented by hundreds of visitors

panic and fear among civilians. “We need food and medicine, not the ugly
American bombs that we have tasted for nine years,” Al-Nahari

“The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) Has Escalated
Premeditated Murder Against Palestinians”
by Jordan News
On Sunday, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor
reported that the Israeli
Occupation Forces (IOF) have escalated its
premeditated murders, extrajudicial executions, and judicial killings against
Palestinian civilians through direct targeting with snipers and drones in
various regions of the Gaza Strip.
According to Euro-Med Monitor, Israel is killing
Palestinians on a large scale through artillery and aerial strikes and by
speeding up the execution of extrajudicial killings. These
actions amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute
Basic Law of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Euro-Med Monitor has documented numerous Israeli
sniping operations, killings, and executions that have primarily targeted
civilians in shelter centers, hospitals, streets, and populated residential
areas.
One of these incidents occurred on February 4 when
an Israeli “quadcopter” drone shot and killed
49-year-old Palestinian citizen Jihad Muhammad Al-Dardasawi
from Al-Turkman neighborhood in the Shuja’iya area east of Gaza City. The preliminary analysis
of Dardasawi’s body revealed that he had been the target
of direct fire, sustaining multiple puncture wounds, including at least four in
the back and one in the thigh.
Akram Al-Dardasawi
informed the Euro-Med Monitor team that his brother Jihad was killed
by Israeli gunfire while riding his bicycle from his home to the Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City to deliver food to their
injured brother. He added that Jihad was subsequently buried in the yard of one
of the shelter schools east of Gaza City.
At least eight Palestinians were reportedly killed
in Israeli sniper and shooting operations in various parts of the southern Gaza
Strip city of Khan Yunis during the early hours of
yesterday, Friday, according to reports received by Euro-Med Monitor.
Reports reached Euro-Med Monitor on Thursday afternoon
regarding the recuperation of the bodies of six individuals and their transfer
to the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza
Strip, after they were shot dead by IOF snipers while attempting to obtain
drinking water near the hospital.
On the same day, Euro-Med Monitor received reports
of the deaths of two Palestinians and the grave injury of a third after an
Israeli quadcopter drone opened fire at a refugee
school near the Al-Awda schools, east of Khan Yunis.
On Wednesday morning, Euro-Med Monitor teams
documented the death of a 14-year-old girl, Ru’a Atef Qadeeh, who was shot by IOF
snipers in front of the Nasser Hospital gate. The teen was attempting to fetch
water from a nearby location.
The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor also reported
that, on February 4, just before noon, Muhammad Diab
Abdel Qader Barhoum was
shot and killed by a quadcopter drone as he was
heading to Al-Nasr town, north of Rafah City, to feed
his sheep.
On February 2, IOF snipers stationed near the Palestinian Red
Crescent Society (PRCS)
in Khan Yunis killed four Palestinians, including Hadaya Hamad, the director of the
Youth and Volunteers Department.
On January 31, an IOF sniper shot and killed the
security guard at the PRCS-run Al-Amal Hospital in
Khan Yunis while he was standing close to the
hospital’s back door.
Since the beginning of the Israeli military attack
on the Gaza Strip, along with the ground incursions that started at the end of
last October, hundreds of Palestinian civilians have been killed or wounded by
Israeli snipers and quadcopter drones.

Palestinian and Irish activists have expressed growing dismay at how the

Finding
clean and safe drinking water in Gaza has become nearly impossible.
Aref
Abed, 60, lives in Gaza City’s al-Yarmouk neighborhood.
Typically, Abed would fill his 1,500-liter barrel with desalinated water from a
desalination truck.
Yet
this is no longer an option.
The
desalination plants are closed entirely or operating at extremely limited capacity
due to a lack of electricity and fuel. Israel has also destroyed much of Gaza’s
sanitation and water infrastructure or deliberately cut off
the piping in of water.
Abed’s
options for safe drinking water were nonexistent, so he went to a nearby well.
Abed knew that such wells do not provide safe drinking water and instead are
used for irrigation or other water needs, but he was desperate.
When
he arrived at the well, he was so thirsty that he drank without thinking.
He
knew the water was dirty by its taste. Then, when he washed his hands, he saw
they were covered in sediment.
“I
saw the water was not pure and had some dirt,” he said. “I think it is
untreated from sewage and unsuitable for using to wash, to clean or even
to bathe.”
He
vomited from the water. Still, he forced himself to continue drinking.
Then,
in mid-January, Abed went to the hospital because he had a high fever and
constant diarrhea. He was severely dehydrated.
Doctors
diagnosed him with typhoid, a life-threatening bacterial infection. If left
untreated, he could experience kidney failure.

“Israel Killed 75% of Journalists in War Zones Last
Year”
https://libertarianinstitute.org/news/israel-killed-75-of-journalists-in-war-zones-last-year/
by
Kyle Anzalone
A global
watchdog group for the
treatment of journalists found that Israeli forces were responsible for about
three-quarters of all journalists killed in war zones during 2023. The
Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found that 72 Palestinian reporters were
killed last year.
“More than three-quarters of the 99 journalists and
media workers killed worldwide in 2023 died in the Israel-Gaza war, the
majority of them Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza,
The CPJ report concluded. “The conflict claimed the lives of more journalists
in three months than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire
year.”
In the last three months of 2023, Israel killed 72
Palestinian and three Lebanese journalists. Two Israeli journalists were killed
in the Hamas attack on October 7. Excluding the Israeli onslaught in Gaza, CPJ
found worldwide deaths of journalists last year was less than half of 2022’s
total. At least 11 Palestinian journalists have been killed so far in 2024.
CPJ believes some of the Palestinian journalists
were targeted by Israel, and the organization is
conducting further investigations. The Gaza Strip’s Government Media Office
puts the number higher, saying at least 126 Palestinian media workers have been
killed. “This war is unprecedented in terms of the threat to journalists,”
Jodie Ginsberg, president of the CPJ, said.
She explained that Israel’s killing of journalists
prevents war crimes in Gaza from being seen by the international community.
“What’s important to remember about this war is that Gazan
journalists are the only journalists able to report on what’s happening inside
Gaza. International journalists have not been able to get in, have not been
allowed in, except on very, very controlled trips that are overseen by the
Israeli army.” Ginsberg continued, “So we are entirely reliant on those
[Palestinian] journalists, who are risking their lives to bring us this
story.”

“Israel army let groups watch Palestinians tortured”
https://www.newarab.com/news/israel-army-let-groups-watch-palestinians-tortured-euro-med
The
Israeli army brought groups of Israeli civilians into prisons to watch Palestinian prisoners getting tortured, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor revealed on
Monday.
Palestinian detainees released from two Israeli
detention centres told the human rights group that
they were stripped naked, beaten with metal batons and electric sticks, and verbally brutalised
under the watch of civilian visitors.
The visitors came to watch the torture sessions in
groups of “ten to twenty”, seemingly organised by the
Israeli army. In many cases, they were allowed to film the torture sessions on
their phones.

Human Rights Monitor
Euro-Med
Human Rights Monitor is a Geneva-based independent organization with regional
offices across the MENA region and Europe.
Geneva - The Israeli army
introduced groups of Israeli civilians into detention centres
and prisons holding Palestinian prisoners and detainees from the Gaza Strip,
permitting the civilians to witness torture crimes against the detainees, with
many allowed to film them on their own phones.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor received shocking
testimonies from recently released Palestinian prisoners and detainees, in
which they reported that the Israeli army invited a number of Israeli civilians
during their interrogation sessions to witness torture and inhumane treatment,
to which they were deliberately subjected in the presence of the civilians.
Arrested during ground incursions by Israeli army
forces into the Strip, the prisoners and detainees were held for varying
periods of time inside two detention centres: one
located in the Zikim area on the northern border of
the Gaza Strip, and another affiliated with the Naqab
prison in southern Israel.
The released detainees told Euro-Med Monitor that
the Israeli soldiers had purposefully presented them before Israeli civilians,
falsely claiming that they were fighters affiliated with Palestinian armed
factions and that they had taken part in the 7 October attack on Israeli towns on
Gaza Strip borders.
According to testimony received by Euro-Med Monitor,
groups of ten to twenty Israeli civilians at a time were permitted to watch and
laughingly film Palestinian prisoners and detainees in their underwear while
Israeli army soldiers subjected them to physical abuse, including beating them
with metal batons, electric sticks, and pouring hot water on their heads. The
detainees were also verbally abused.
This is the first time that these illegal practices
have come to the attention of Euro-Med Monitor. It adds a new crime to the list
of those committed by the Israeli army against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,
and specifically against prisoners and detainees who are subjected to cruel
torture, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and denials of a fair
trial, among other atrocities.
Palestinian Omar Abu Mudallala,
43, told the Euro-Med Monitor team: “I was arrested at the checkpoint set up
near the Kuwait roundabout, which separates Gaza City from the central region,
as part of the Israeli random arrest campaigns. I was subjected to all types of
torture and abuse for approximately 52 days,” pointing out that
Israeli soldiers “brought Israeli civilians to watch our nude torture.”
Abu Mudallala added: “The
Israeli army brought a number of Israeli civilians into our detention centres while beating us and telling them, ‘These are Hamas
terrorists who killed you and raped your women on 7 October,’ while the Israeli
civilians were filming us being beaten, abused, and tortured while making fun of
us.”
"This happened five times while I was being
held. The first time was in Barkasat Zikim, where we were blindfolded. However, one of the
detainees who speaks Hebrew told us that the soldiers
were interacting with Israeli civilians claiming that we were armed fighters.
The other four incidents took place in the Negev detention facility, where
successive Israeli groups were taken inside tents to witness our abuse and
record the torture methods we were subjected to without allowing us to speak or
interact with them. Since we were not wearing blindfolds at the
time, I saw them all four times with my own eyes."

ESSAY: “Fascist South Africa and Zionist
“Israel”—Hitler’s Heirs, Victor Lungelo Mayekiso, 1969”
South African Pan-Africanist Victor Lungelo carefully maps the links between “Hitler’s Heirs:”
Fascist South Africa and Zionist “Israel.”
by Editors,
The Black Agenda Review
Zionism equals Nazism. And, as the South African
Pan-Africanist Victor L. Makyekiso
once wrote, Apartheid South Africa and the Zionist state both share
philosophical origins, genocidal mandates, and often personnel with Nazi
Germany. In a 1969 essay titled “Fascist South Africa and Zionist
“Israel”—Hitler’s Heirs,” Makyekiso carefully plots the links between the three
entities – down to the twisted use of religious claims to justify state
violence. Makyekiso also points to the ways that zionism serves “the selfish
interests of international imperialism led by U.S. Imperialism.”
Makyekiso’s essay was first published in the
International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions’ ICATU Review (October 1969) and reprinted in March 1970 in Africanist
News and Views , a journal of the Pan-Africanist Congress of Azania. We reprint the essay below
as it lends a certain clarity to events of the past
and the genocide of the present, while reminding us of the correct formulation:
Zionism equals Nazism.
Fascist
South Africa and Zionist “Israel”—Hitler’s Heirs
Victor Lungelo Mayekiso
Nazism and Zionism are two indistinguishable
philosophies in as far as the source from which they draw their inspiration and
in the manner in which they operate for the realization of their goals.
Fascist, white supremacist South Africa today is a
citadel of Nazism in Africa whilst fascist, racialist “Israel” is a bastion of
Zionism internationally. “Israeli” Zionism and South African Christian
Nationalism manifest themselves as religious movements of a people that have a
covenant with God. Thus, the scriptures are deliberately twisted and corrupted
to serve the selfish interests of international imperialism led by U.S.
Imperialism.
Nazi Germany under Hitler believed that the Aryan
race was a “God-Chosen’ race that would, by mutation, result in an
unprecedented exaltation of the human race and the “apparition of a new race of
heroes and demi-gods and god-men” [Source: Dr. Achille Delmas: Hilter, essay de biography psycho-pathologique].
This notion of a mutation crops up again and again and is not yet extinct
today. The South African regime and the “Israeli” Zionists similarly pander to
this belief of performing an act of mutation which will result in an
unprecedented exaltation of their races.
Nazi Germany had secret societies of the
“initiated”, the German Veil Society and the Thule group. These societies were
there to mould the minds of the German people in the Nazi fashion and to
victimize The Who did not conform.
“Israel” has multiple Zionist Societies functioning
clandestinely in various countries as pressure groups that do not stop at
kidnappings and murder to achieve their purpose, whether it be the murder of
other nationals impeding “Israel’s” Zionist aspirations or the elimination of innocent
Jews who reject Zionist aims. Or, those who are killed deliberately for the
purpose of evoking sympathy for the Zionist cause by rousing the old scare-crow
of anti-semitism.

One question is being asked more than any other in
Gaza: When will the war stop?
Everybody wants to hear news of a ceasefire that
will prevent further destruction and stop the spread of hunger and disease
among people who have been displaced.
Khaled Ramadan, 40, was first uprooted from al-Qarara, east of Khan Younis, a
city in southern Gaza.
He then went to a training center run by the UN
agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in Khan Younis.
Later he moved to al-Mawasi, another neighborhood in
the Khan Younis area.
“Every time I move, I go through a long struggle to
adapt to the new place,” he said. “I have to search for water and food and find
wood to light a fire so that I can protect the children from the cold. My
children ask me every day, ‘When will we go back to our home?’”
“I miss having a full night’s sleep,” he added. “I
can only sleep for a few hours and I am very anxious when I wake up.”
With food scarce and prices of items still available
skyrocketing, he cannot afford to provide for his family. They are relying on
canned food from aid donors.
“Our stomachs are tired of canned food. We crave the
proper food we ate before the war.”
Ramadan said that he had hoped that the war would
end within the week after it was declared in October.
“The way it has continued has exhausted us,” he
said. “It has increased our pain greatly. We have had enough destruction and
death.”

Israel escalated its siege on a hospital in Khan Younis while international concern mounted over a

South Africa announced on Tuesday that it had made an urgent

The human rights group Al-Haq
warned that such an assault on Rafah
“will result in thousands of Palestinian civilians killed on a scale that has
not been witnessed in the previous four months of Israel’s genocidal military
campaign against Gaza.”
Martin Griffiths, the UN relief chief, said on Tuesday that he was “sounding the alarm once

slaughter in Gaza.”
He added that “they could also leave an already
fragile humanitarian operation at death’s door.”

An Israeli professor disclosed in a recent lecture
series at Columbia University that Israeli authorities have permitted large
pharmaceutical firms to experiment on Palestinian prisoners, and have been
testing weapons on Palestinian children.
Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, the Lawrence D. Biele
Chair in Law at Israel’s Hebrew University, also presented in Amsterdam in
January on the same topic.
Promotional material for the events describe her
lecture as illustrating through “the voices and writings of Jerusalemite
children who live under Occupation” that Israel’s practices of “surveying,
imprisoning, torturing, and killing can be used as a laboratory for states,
arms companies, and security agencies to market their technologies as ‘combat
proven.’”
Shalhoub-Kevorkian’s presentation was based on
data she gathered for a research project for the university. The work, titled Arrested Childhood in Spaces
of Indifference: The Criminalized Children of Occupied East Jerusalem,
was published in the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law in 2018 and
co-authored by Shahrazad Odeh,
who is also on the Faculty of Law and Institute of Criminology at Hebrew University.
In the article, the authors demonstrate how Israel’s
policy of targeting Palestinian children and childhood through the criminal
justice system is fundamental to the state’s mechanism of colonial
dispossession. They shed light on the critical role that the Israeli legal
system plays in the state’s “racist project.”

“Just Like 9/11? Suspicious Israeli Stock Market
Activity Hints at Foreknowledge of October 7 Attack”
by
Kit Klarenberg
A new academic study has made a shocking and highly
controversial finding. Suspicious Israeli stock market activity in the days
preceding Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7
indicates that a particular party had foreknowledge of the impending attack and
used that information to directly profit from the panic that ensued.
The paper, authored by Robert J. Jackson Jr.
of New York University School of Law and Joshua Mitts of New York
University School of Law, concludes that based on a “significant spike” in
short selling of listed Israeli companies, persons unknown were aware of the
operation was impending, and sought to profit illicitly. Short selling – or
shorting – allows traders to bet a stock will perform poorly and reap rewards
if they’re correct.
Shorting is a relatively rare practice compared to
traditional trading and with good reason. Losses can be vast if forecast poor
performance doesn’t materialize, and many investment advisors warn against engaging in the practice under any
circumstances. Strikingly though, the academics found shorting of Israeli
companies in days immediately before October 7 “far exceeded short selling that
occurred during numerous other periods of crisis, including the recession
following the financial crisis, the 2014 Israel-Gaza war, and the COVID-19
pandemic.”
The pair argue this
activity may reflect attempts by Hamas operatives to profit from, if not
outright finance, their forthcoming attack, an allegation eagerly taken up by Hebrew newspaper Haaretz.
Meanwhile, Israeli finance rag Globes attacked the study, claiming “huge errors” by its authors
in overestimating the profits of individuals who shorted Israeli stocks. The
pair mistakenly quoted returns in agorot, a
denomination of Israeli currency, as shekels – in pennies as dollars in U.S.
terms – leading them to inflate investor returns by a magnitude of 100.
Yet, the outlet acknowledged a “consistent rise in
short trading balances on [Israeli] shares prior to the outbreak of the war.”
Moreover, the Israeli government has taken the paper’s findings so seriously
that an official investigation has been launched to ascertain the truth. As we shall see,
there is good reason to believe that if someone sought to enrich themselves due
to foreknowledge of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, it is unlikely they were connected to Hamas.
The paper notes numerous historical precedents for
such activity, which “occurs in gaps in U.S. and international enforcement of
legal prohibitions on informed trading.” Research on “profitable trading on the
basis of information about coming military conflict” is an underdeveloped
academic field. Such lack of oversight and scrutiny around shorting by Western
regulators and watchdogs may explain who profited this time and why.
‘Suddenly
and Significantly’
The academics conclude, “Our evidence is consistent
with informed traders anticipating and profiting from the Hamas attack.” Concerns about the paper muddling up profit totals aside, this
finding is highly persuasive. Multiple datasets reviewed therein amply show
an indeed “significant spike” in short selling in the immediate leadup to Operation Al-Aqsa Flood
– and a supremely suspicious one at that.

consciousness like a red-hot iron and demand a loud shout from the depths of
the soul: “For God’s sake, stop it!” Indeed, in its own discreet tones, the
International Court of Justice has issued such a shout, yet it seems to have
fallen on deaf ears.
Given the many instances of sheer inhumanity
unfolding over just two decades—in Iraq, Syria, Tigray,
Myanmar, and Ukraine—why should I highlight Gaza as the major moral calamity of
our time? I will lay down five reasons this is the case.
The first concerns the sheer intensity of the assault. Arif
Husain, the chief economist at the United Nation’s
World Food Program, bears testimony to this with his remark:
“I’ve been doing this for the past two decades, and
I’ve been to all kinds of conflicts and all kinds of crises. And, for me, this
is unprecedented because of, one, the magnitude, the scale, the entire
population of a particular place; second, the severity; and third, the speed at
which this is happening, at which this has unfolded.”
The figures representing deaths, injuries, and
destruction in Gaza bear out Husain’s words. We are told that 70% of the
victims are women and children; that doctors, medical staff, journalists, and
university professors are being targeted; that all of Gaza has become a death
camp where no one is safe anywhere. We learn of whole families being liquidated
at the drop of a bomb, three generations wiped out in an instant; of kids
losing their parents and all their siblings, left with no surviving family
members in the world; of hospitals being shuttered and their patients forced to
walk miles to designated safety zones, only to be hit by sniper fire en route
or struck by rockets when they arrive.
On top of the deaths, injuries, and demolitions
directly caused by the bombardments, Israel’s near-total blockade of vital
essentials—food, water, fuel, and medicines—drives the spike of suffering even
more deeply into the hearts of Gaza’s population, subjecting displaced people
to extremes of hunger, thirst, and infectious disease. Now that the major
Western donors are suspending their funding of UNRWA, the U.N. relief agency
for Palestinian refugees, the very lifeline for the people of Gaza is being
cut. Like a ravenous hawk, famine hovers just above the strip, ready to strike.
READ MORE: The War in Gaza: It’s Not About Hamas.
It’s About Demographics
The second factor that underscores the moral gravity
of the crisis in Gaza is its visibility,
its living immediacy. Unlike the Nazi Holocaust and other war
crimes—including Russia’s blood-curdling operations in Ukraine—the genocide in
Gaza unfolds live on our television and computer screens, right before our
eyes. The images jump out from the screen and beg us to act: children with
amputated limbs, their bodies torn and broken; babies abandoned in powerless
incubators; apartment buildings and universities collapsing like decks of
cards; historic churches and mosques destroyed beyond repair; refugees crammed
into infested camps, crying out for water and food; corpses thrown into mass
graves; captives blindfolded and stripped naked, paraded like cattle through
desolate streets.
Such images make all our normal activities—chatting
with friends, going out for a meal, joining a family gathering, going to a
concert—seem insipid, hollow, and pointless. Once we bear witness to these
horrific crimes, we feel a heavy moral responsibility has fallen on our
shoulders, a burden we can’t shake off by claiming these atrocities don’t
concern us. The burden is painful, but also exhilarating in reminding us of our
capacity for empathy.
A third factor that heightens the moral gravity of
the Gaza crisis derives from the fact that it is the state of Israel, the self-declared national home of the
Jewish people, that is inflicting all this suffering, anguish, and death on
Gaza. Yes, we do hold Israel to a higher moral bar than we do most other
nations, but not from anti-Jewish bias. We do so because the Jews are the ethnic
group that experienced the horror of the Holocaust and would
should therefore be the most vigilant defenders of the inviolable right
of people to be free from ethnic persecution.
The vow “Never again,” as understood by Jews of
conscience, means never again for
anyone. Yet, instead of showing empathy, Israel is now using the past
trauma of the Holocaust—and the guilt of the countries that inflicted that
trauma—as a shield to silence criticism and maintain its impunity. It’s as if
they are saying to the world, “You can’t touch us because you bear the guilt
for our past suffering.”
The fourth way in which the crisis in Gaza bears
moral weight relates specifically to us here in the United States. Our country
is complicit in Israel’s crimes. With our own tax dollars, we fund Israel’s
military, supplying it with the most advanced weaponry available. We give
Israel diplomatic cover at the U.N. through our use of the veto. And we give
Israel moral cover by echoing the messages of its propaganda machine at press
conferences and international gatherings, while tarring those who criticize its
actions.
When all the moral dimensions of the situation in
Gaza are viewed together—the sheer volume of indiscriminate killing; the fact
that the devastation is starkly visible to us through the media; the fact that
the operation is being carried out by the state representing the Jewish people,
the historic victims of persecution and genocide; and the complicity of the
United States—they point to the fifth reason this is a deeply moral crisis.
Taken conjointly, all these factors
shatter the moral framework offered to us as the key for understanding our
world. . . . .

“Israel engineers ‘deep pockets of starvation’
across Gaza”
by Nora
Barrows-Friedman
Israel
is starving Gaza.
Children “are going without food for days, as aid
convoys are increasingly denied permits to enter,” reported the BBC on 10 February.
The United Nations estimates that nearly one in
every 10 Palestinian children in Gaza under 5 years
old is now acutely malnourished.
Stéphane Dujarric,
spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told reporters on 2 February that the agency’s partners
have indicated a “sharp rise in acute malnutrition” across the population in
Gaza, “with a 12-fold increase compared to the rate recorded before the
hostilities.”
There are only between 70-100 trucks entering Gaza
per day “in the best case scenario,” with only “two of those trucks going to
the northern governorates,” according to estimates by the Geneva-based
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.
Before Israel’s attacks began in October,
approximately 500 trucks entered Gaza each day.
“What enters the Strip does not meet the minimum
level of the population’s needs in light of the severe, continuous and
accumulated deprivation of food, drinking water and medicine supplies [amid
its] growing need due to the ongoing siege and genocide,” stated Lima Bustami, legal department director at Euro-Med.
“The situation is getting more complicated because
the people living in the Gaza Strip are under siege from all sides, making it
impossible for them to produce the food they need locally or get it from other
sources,” Bustami added.
On 26 January, the International Court of Justice
(ICJ) last month ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide. The
order was among a number of provisional measures issued by the court in a case
which South Africa is taking against Israel.
Israel is supposed to inform the court within one
month what steps it was taking to comply with the 26 January order. A full
examination of South Africa’s case by the ICJ will take place at a later stage.
Declaring a state of famine “may find its way before
the International Court of Justice,” said Bustami.
Such a declaration “could either lead to the request
of an amendment [to the provisional measures issued on 26 January]… or as
additional evidence that the court will weigh during its consideration of the
merits of the case and issuing its final ruling,” Euro-Med stated.
A recent report by the Integrated Food Security Phase
Classification (IPC) says that between 8 December and 7 February, the entire
population of the Gaza Strip, approximately 2.3 million people, has been
classified as in “crisis or worse.”
“This is the highest share of people facing high
levels of acute food insecurity that the IPC initiative has ever classified for
any given area or country,” the IPC states.
Moreover, the IPC states that about half of the
population is in a food emergency and “at least one in four households (more
than half a million people) is facing catastrophic conditions” – characterized
by an “extreme lack of food, starvation and exhaustion of coping capacities.”
According to the IPC, “even though the levels of
acute malnutrition and non-trauma related mortality might not have yet crossed
famine thresholds, these are typically the outcomes of prolonged and extreme
food consumption gaps.”

Forces' Greg Stoke”
https://www.mintpressnews.com/former-us-special-ops-greg-stoker-us-israeli-imperialism/286737/
with Mnar Adley
(58:03)
The death and destruction caused in Gaza
is almost beyond comprehension. Over 25,000 people have died at the hands of
the Israeli air and ground assault, and virtually the entire population of the
densely populated strip has been forced to flee their homes.
Few
governments have been willing to put up meaningful resistance to Israeli
aggression. One exception is Yemen, whose de-facto government Ansar Allah (often referred to as the Houthis)
has engaged in a blockade of the Red Sea in an attempt to halt the onslaught.
In
response, the U.S. is leading a Western alliance of nations to break the
blockade and support the genocide. Yet joining the “MintCast”
today is a guest who claims that, for all the destruction, Israel’s war in Gaza
is failing. Greg Stoker is a former U.S. Army Special Operations member who
left the military and became a committed anti-imperialist. Greg produces content analyzing Western imperialism and the current wars
in the Middle East, and his videos explaining the
situation regularly go viral, attracting an audience of millions of people.
Today,
he sat down with “MintCast” host Mnar
Adley to discuss Israel, Yemen and the U.S. role in
the chaos. He explained
how the IDF is losing the ground war based upon a number of factors, errors and
assumptions it made, including an overreliance on air superiority and bombing,
the assumption that collective punishment would be an effective deterrent, a
shocking lack of training for Israeli ground forces, perilously little infantry
cover for Israeli armor making their tanks sitting ducks, and an inability to
set realistic goals and targets in the war.
While
the Israelis might have all the technology, money and Western backing, they are
fighting a close-quarters ground war with a guerilla foe – a sort of war they
are woefully unsuited for. With no aircraft or even vehicles of any note,
Hamas’ focus is hand-to-hand fighting and hit-and-run skirmishes. Once they hit
the Israelis, they can immediately disappear into a myriad of tunnels or
bombed-out ruins, making them extremely difficult to pin down. The IDF has been
unable to deal Hamas a serious blow despite confidently predicting that it
would destroy the group altogether by the end of the fighting.
Meanwhile,
the United States continues to escalate its attacks against Yemen. President
Biden is the fourth consecutive president to bomb the country. It remains to be
seen whether the U.S. will make the same mistakes the IDF has been making, but
the threat of a new global conflict is on the horizon, even though the White
House refuses to describe what it is currently doing as a “war.”

“Anti-Capitalist Politics in the Time of COVID-19”
https://davidharvey.org/2020/03/anti-capitalist-politics-in-the-time-of-covid-19/
with David Harvey, March 19, 2020
When trying to interpret, understand and analyze the
daily flow of news, I tend to locate what is happening against the background
of two distinctive but intersecting models of how capitalism works. The
first level is a mapping of the internal contradictions of the circulation and
accumulation of capital as money value flows in search of profit through the
different “moments” (as Marx calls them) of production, realization
(consumption), distribution, and reinvestment. This is a model of
the capitalist economy as a spiral of endless expansion and growth. It gets
pretty complicated as it gets elaborated through, for example, the lenses of
geopolitical rivalries, uneven geographical developments, financial
institutions, state policies, technological reconfigurations and the
ever-changing web of divisions of labour and of
social relations. I envision this model as embedded, however, in a broader
context of social reproduction (in households and communities), in an on-going
and ever-evolving metabolic relation to nature (including the “second nature”
of urbanization and the built environment) and all manner of cultural,
scientific (knowledge-based), religious and contingent social formations that
human populations typically create across space and time. These latter
“moments” incorporate the active expression of human wants, needs and desires,
the lust for knowledge and meaning and the evolving quest for fulfillment
against a background of changing institutional arrangements, political
contestations, ideological confrontations, losses, defeats, frustrations and
alienations, all worked out in a world of marked geographical, cultural, social
and political diversity. This second model constitutes, as it were, my
working understanding of global capitalism as a distinctive social formation,
whereas the first is about the contradictions within the economic engine that
powers this social formation along certain pathways of its historical and
geographical evolution.
When on 26th of January 2020 I first read
of a Corona Virus that was gaining ground in China, I immediately thought of
the repercussions for the global dynamics of capital accumulation. I knew
from my studies of the economic model that blockages and disruptions in the
continuity of capital flow would result in devaluations and that if
devaluations became widespread and deep that would signal the onset of crises.
I was also well aware that China is the second largest economy in the
world and that it had effectively bailed out global capitalism in the aftermath
of 2007-8, so any hit upon China’s economy was bound to have serious
consequences for a global economy that was in any case already in a parlous
condition. The existing model of capital accumulation was, it seemed to me, already in a lot of trouble. Protest
movements were occurring almost everywhere (from Santiago to Beirut), many of
which were focused on the fact that the dominant economic model was not working
well for the mass of the population. This neoliberal model is increasingly
resting on fictitious capital and a vast expansion in the money supply and debt
creation. It is already facing the problem of insufficient effective demand to
realize the values that capital is capable of producing. So how might the
dominant economic model, with its sagging legitimacy and delicate health,
absorb and survive the inevitable impacts of what might become a
pandemic? The answer depended heavily on how long the disruption might
last and spread, for as Marx pointed out, devaluation does not occur because
commodities cannot be sold but because they cannot be sold in time.
I had long refused the idea of “nature” as outside
of and separate from culture, economy and daily life. I take a more dialectical
and relational view of the metabolic relation to nature. Capital modifies the
environmental conditions of its own reproduction but does so in a context of
unintended consequences (like climate change) and against the background of
autonomous and independent evolutionary forces that are perpetually re-shaping
environmental conditions. There is, from this standpoint, no such thing as a
truly natural disaster. Viruses mutate all of the time to be sure. But
the circumstances in which a mutation becomes life-threatening depend on human
actions. There are two relevant aspects to this. First, favorable
environmental conditions increase the probability of vigorous mutations. It is,
for example, plausible to expect that rapid transformation of habitat and
intensive or wayward food supply systems in, for example, the humid sub-tropics
may contribute to this. Such systems exist in many places, including
China south of the Yangtse and
SouthEast Asia. Secondly, the conditions
that favor rapid transmission through host bodies vary greatly. High density
human populations would seem an easy host target. It is well known that
measles epidemics, for example, only flourish in larger urban population
centers but rapidly die out in sparsely populated regions. How human beings
interact with each other, move around, discipline themselves or forget to wash
their hands affects how diseases get transmitted. In recent times SARS,
Bird and Swine Flu appear to have come out of China or SouthEast
Asia. China has suffered heavily also from swine fever in the past year,
entailing the mass slaughter of pigs and escalating pork prices. I do not
say all this to indict China. There are plenty of other places where
environmental risks for viral mutation and diffusion are high. The Spanish Flu
of 1918 may have come out of Kansas and Africa may have incubated HIV/AIDS and
certainly initiated West Nile and Ebola, while dengue seems to flourish in
Latin America. But the economic and demographic impacts of the spread of
the virus depend upon pre-existing cracks and vulnerabilities in the hegemonic
economic model.
I was not unduly surprised that COVID-19 was
initially found in Wuhan (though whether it originated there is not known).
Plainly the local effects would be substantial and given this was a serious
production center there would likely be global economic repercussions (though I
had no idea of the magnitude). The big question was how the contagion and
diffusion might occur and how long it would last (until a vaccine could be
found). Earlier experience had shown that one of the downsides of increasing
globalization is how impossible it is to stop a rapid international diffusion
of new diseases. We live in a highly connected world where almost everyone
travels. The human networks for potential diffusion are vast and open.
The danger (economic and demographic) was that the disruption would last a year
or more.

2020
There is a serious health crisis which must be
duly resolved. And this is a number one priority.
But there is another important dimension
which has to be addressed.
Millions of people have lost their jobs, and
their lifelong savings. In developing countries, poverty and despair
prevail.
While the lockdown is presented to
public opinion as the sole means to
resolving a global public health crisis, its devastating economic and social impacts are casually
ignored.
The unspoken truth is
that the novel coronavirus provides a pretext to
powerful financial interests and corrupt politicians to precipitate the entire
World into a spiral of mass unemployment,
bankruptcy and extreme poverty.
This is the true
picture of what is happening. Poverty is Worldwide. While
famines are erupting in Third World countries, closer to home, in

“De-Dollarization–Toward
the End of the U.S. Monetary Hegemony?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h45Bovld7Vk&feature=youtu.be
with Michael Hudson
(55:46)
On 20 November 2019, Professor Michael Hudson delivered
a lecture on “De-Dollarization–Toward the End of the U.S. Monetary Hegemony?”
in Lingnan University, Hong Kong, China. The
moderator was Professor Peter Beattie (The Chinese University of Hong Kong).
Michael Hudson is President of The Institute for the Study of Long-Term
Economic Trends (ISLET), Distinguished Research Professor of Economics at the
University of Missouri, Kansas City and author of …And Forgive Them Their Debts

and Trade, Development and Foreign Debt (1992 & 2009), amongst many others.
He acts as an economic advisor to governments worldwide including Iceland,
Latvia and China on finance and tax law. De-Dollarization –
Toward the End of the U.S. Monetary Hegemony? Since the end of World War
II, the United States has been the world’s hegemonic power. In economic,
military, and cultural spheres, the U.S. has enjoyed nearly unrivaled
supremacy. However, unlike past hegemons, which have
been net creditors to the rest of the world, the United States is a net debtor;
but this is a strength, not a weakness. U.S. debt is
an integral feature of its economic dominance, through which the United States
receives goods and services from the rest of the world in exchange for dollars
it can print and keystroke into existence. Yet cracks are showing in the
foundations of dollar hegemony, as countries look to find ways to escape from
U.S. economic dominance. In this talk, Professor Hudson discussed the prospects
and challenges of global de-dollarization, and how countries like China might
forge a way toward a different monetary system free of U.S. control.

“There's A Crisis That Is
Quietly Creating New Economic Superpowers”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6GqEpmn_Fk
with Jack Chapple
(12:36)
As China begins to reopen its factories and return
back to work, what they are returning to will not be the same… Despite China
being the worlds economic darling for the last 40
years, the balance of the worlds
economic power has begun to shift to some places that you might not expect. In
fact, we are already starting to see some signs of other nations around the
world, rising up in order to take away some of China’s manufacturing prowess
away from them. And who knows, we might be witnessing the creation of the next
generation of economic superpowers, right infront of
our very eyes. But the reason that this is happening is a little complex. it started a few decades ago in 1970’s China when the
country began shifting its economic policy away from communism, and more
towards capitalism. They soon began building specific economic zones where
massive ports and factories could be built that would maximize productivity and
efficiency. And once these economic zones were opened up to foreign trade and
investment, China’s economy began exploding. In the 1980’s many fortune 500
companies began having their products manufactured in China because China could
make their products with a similar quality, but for a substantially lower price
than if they were manufactured in the west. And this was because of the extremely
low wages that Chinese workers made, combined with other factors like tax laws
and import/export efficiencies. So all of a sudden, if a competitor chose to
manufacture their products outside of China, they simply could not compete on
price, which would likely have made them go out of business. And because of
this, by the 2010’s, one third of all products on the planet were manufactured
in China. Within the span of 50 years, China has turned itself around from an
impoverished nation of farmers, to a nation that has the second largest economy
in the world, behind the United States. But a few strange things began
happening in the past few years. Here’s a question…what happens when a country
who builds its economy based upon low labor costs, all of a sudden becomes succesful and wealthy? In 1990, the average yearly wage
from a Chinese worker was about $150 USD. By 2005, it was $2800 Dollars. In
2015, it was $8900. And as of this year, the average Chinese worker will make
around $13 500 dollars.

Even as the privately owned Federal Reserve is
projecting a depression that will make the Grapes of Wrath look like a vacation

good old days fueled bonus pools larger than many countries, not one penny of
which went to the public--onto its balance sheet. Once Mega Depression
inevitably wipes those assets out, guess who gets to eat all the losses? Yeah,
you do. That's the entire point of our privately owned and operated monetary

“Defusing the Derivatives Time Bomb: Some Proposed
Solutions”
by Ellen Brown
The
“protected class” is granted “safe harbor” only because their bets are so risky
that to let them fail could crash the economy. But why let them bet at all?
his is a sequel to a Jan. 15 article titled “Casino Capitalism and the Derivatives
Market: Time for Another ‘Lehman Moment’?”, discussing the threat of a 2024 “black swan”
event that could pop the derivatives bubble. That bubble is now over ten times
the GDP of the world and is so interconnected and fragile that an unanticipated
crisis could trigger the collapse not just of the bubble but of the economy. To
avoid that result, in the event of the bankruptcy of a major financial
institution, derivative claimants are put first in line to grab the assets —
not just the deposits of customers but their stocks and bonds. This is made
possible by the Uniform Commercial Code, under which all assets held by
brokers, banks and “central clearing parties” have been “dematerialized” into
fungible pools and are held in “street name.”
This article will consider several proposed
alternatives for diffusing what Warren Buffett called a time bomb waiting to go
off. That sort of bomb just detonated in the Chinese stock market, contributing
to its fall; and the result could be much worse in the U.S., where the stock
market plays a much larger role in the economy.
The
Chinese Derivative Crisis
A Jan.30 article on Bloomberg News notes that “Chinese stocks’ brutal start to
the year is being at least partly blamed on the impact of a relatively new
financial derivative known as a snowball. The products are tied to indexes, and
a key feature is that when the gauges fall below built-in levels,
brokerages will sell their related futures positions.”
Further details are in a Jan. 23rd
article titled “’Snowball’ Derivatives Feed China’s Stock
Market
Avalanche.” It states, “China’s plunging stock market is leading to losses on
billions of dollars worth of derivatives linked to the country’s equity
indexes, fuelling further selling as retail investors offload their positions….
Snowball products are similar to the index-linked products sold in the 2008
financial crisis, with investors betting that U.S. equities would not fall more
than 25% or 30%,” which they did.
Chinese shares rose on Feb. 6, as officials took measures to
prop up the ailing market, including imposing new “zero tolerance” curbs for malicious short selling.

“U.S.-Israeli Aggression, Yemen and the Coming War
with Iran: The Fantastic Achievements of Propaganda”
by Andi Olluri
During
the last two months or so, the media have been deluged with fury over the Houthi—de facto rulers of Yemen—either capturing or bombing
ships outside Yemeni coasts headed toward Israel.
The Houthis’ actions were provoked by Israel’s ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the
Israeli occupation of the southern coastal parts of Yemen, and has now
culminated in an illegal attack against Yemen by the U.S. and UK.
The reason Yemen (the poorest nation in the region
due to continuous Western-Arab aggression), unlike other Arab nations loyal to
Washington and Brussels, would want to show its solidarity with Gaza would be
easy to figure out, had there actually been an interest to do so in the first
place. It, like Gaza, has been subjected to violent Western-Israeli terrorism
by a coalition of Western and Arab states since 2015, continuing to the
present.
The U.S.-Saudi war on Yemen was launched in order to
“police” the independent nationalists in the country, thus “protecting” Western
“energy and security interests in the region,” as internal U.S. State
Department documents put it, also killing between half to one-and-a-half
million Yemenis, if anybody happened to care.1

“Israel’s Big Game Propaganda”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/15/israels-big-game-propaganda/
by
Alan MacLeod
Amid the
fast-paced action that saw the Kansas City Chiefs win their third championship
in five years, Americans tuning in to watch the Super Bowl were met with a
barrage of unusual propaganda.
Nestled between the typical ads for cars and beer
were two bizarre messages: one from the Foundation to Combat
anti-Semitism (FCAS) and the other from the State of Israel itself. Both were
intimately related to the ongoing slaughter in Gaza and trying to draw
attention away from Israeli war crimes.
The FCAS commercial features Clarence B. Jones, the
former advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., who drafted his famous “I Have a
Dream” speech. The message is that there is a growing tidal wave of racist
intolerance in America and that we must all come together to oppose
anti-Semitism — the commercial ends by telling people to visit the website
StandUpToJewishHate.com.
Super Bowl ads do not come cheap, and its $7 million
for 30-second air time price tag was footed by the billionaire owner of the New
England Patriots N.F.L. franchise, Robert Kraft. Kraft (net worth: $11 billion) made his fortune in the paper and
packaging business and has deep ties to the state of Israel, including donating
hundreds of millions of dollars to pro-Israel groups and funding pro-Israel
candidates in U.S. elections. He even enjoys a close relationship with Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Crisis at the NYT”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/14/patrick-lawrence-crisis-at-the-nyt/
by Patrick Lawrence
The
relationship between the Times
and Israeli authorities is now exposed to more light than was ever supposed to
shine on it.
It has been evident to many of us since
the genocide in Gaza began Oct. 7 that Israel risked asking too much of those
inclined to take its side.
The Zionist state would ask what many people cannot
give: It would ask them to surrender their consciences, their idea of moral
order, altogether their native decency as it murders, starves and disperses a
population of 2.3 million while making their land uninhabitable.
The Israelis took this risk and they have lost. We
are now able to watch videos of Israeli soldiers celebrating as they murder
Palestinian mothers and children, as they dance and sing while detonating
entire neighborhoods, as they mock Palestinians in a carnival of racist
depravity one would have thought beyond what is worst in humanity — and
certainly beyond what any Jew would do to another human being.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports, as American media do not, that the Israel Defense
Forces covertly sponsor a social media channel disseminating this degenerate
material in the cause of maintaining maximum hatred.
It is a psychologically diseased nation that boasts
as it inflicts this suffering on The Other that obsesses it. The world is
invited — the ultimate in perversity, this — to partake of Israel’s sickness
and it said, in a Hague courtroom two weeks ago: “No.”
Post–Gaza, apartheid Israel is unlikely ever to
recover what place it enjoyed, merited or otherwise, in the community of
nations. It stands among the pariahs now.
The Biden regime took this risk, too, and it has
also lost.
Its support for the Israelis’ daily brutalities
comes at great political cost, at home and abroad, and is tearing America apart
— its universities, its courts, its legislatures, its communities — and I would
say what pride it still manages to take in itself.
When the history of America’s decline as a hegemonic
power is written, the Gaza crisis is certain to figure as a significant marker
in the nation’s descent into a morass of immorality that has already
contributed to a collapse of its credibility.
We come to U.S. media — mainstream media, corporate
media, legacy media. However you wish to name them, they have gambled and lost,
too. . . . .

“And thus it renders
more and more evident the great central fact that the cause of the miserable
condition of the working class is to be sought, not in these minor grievances,
but in the capitalistic system itself.” Friedrich Engels, The
Condition of the Working Class in England (1845) (preface to the English Edition,
p.36)
The
IMF and World Bank have for decades pushed a policy agenda based on cuts to
public services, increases in taxes paid by the poorest and moves to undermine labour rights and protections.
IMF ‘structural
adjustment’ policies have resulted in 52% of Africans lacking access to
healthcare and 83% having no safety nets to fall back on if they lose their job
or become sick. Even the IMF has shown that neoliberal policies fuel
poverty and inequality.
In 2021, an Oxfam review of IMF COVID-19 loans
showed that 33 African countries were encouraged to pursue austerity policies.
The world’s poorest countries are due to pay $43 billion in debt repayments in
2022, which could otherwise cover the costs of their food imports.
Oxfam and Development Finance International (DFI) have
also revealed that 43 out of 55 African Union member states face public
expenditure cuts totalling $183 billion over the next
five years.
According to Prof Michel Chossudovsky of the Centre for Research on Globalization,
the closure of the world economy (March 11, 2020 Lockdown imposed on more than
190 countries) has triggered an unprecedented process of global indebtedness.
Governments are now under the control of global creditors in the post-COVID
era.
What we are seeing is a de facto privatisation
of the state as governments capitulate to the needs of Western financial
institutions.
Moreover, these debts are largely
dollar-denominated, helping to strengthen the US dollar and US leverage over
countries.
It
raises the question: what was COVID really about . . . ?

“‘The Great Reset’ Is Here: Follow the Money.
‘Insane Lockdown’ of the Global Economy, ‘The Green Agenda’”
https://www.globalresearch.ca/great-reset-follow-money/5740424
by F. William Engdahl
The top-down reorganization of the world
economy by a cabal of technocratic corporativists,
led by the group around the Davos World Economic
Forum– the so-called Great Reset or UN Agenda 2030– is
no future proposal. It is well into actualization as the world remains in
insane lockdown for a virus. The hottest investment area since onset of the coronavirus global lockdowns is something called ESG
investing.
This highly subjective and very controlled game
is dramatically shifting global capital flows into a select group of “approved”
corporate stocks and bonds. Notably it advances the dystopian UN Agenda 2030 or
the WEF Great Reset agenda. The development is one of the most dangerous and
least understood shifts in at least the past century.
The UN
“sustainable economy” agenda is being realized quietly by the very same global
banks
which have created the financial crises in 2008. This time they are preparing
the Klaus Schwab WEF Great Reset by steering hundreds of billions and soon
trillions in investment to their hand-picked “woke” companies, and away from
the “not woke” such as oil and gas companies or coal.
What the bankers and giant investment funds like BlackRock have done is to create a new investment
infrastructure that picks “winners” or “losers” for investment according to how
serious that company is about ESG—Environment, Social values and Governance.
For example a company gets positive ratings for the
seriousness of its hiring gender diverse management and employees, or takes
measures to eliminate their carbon “footprint” by making their energy sources
green or sustainable to use the UN term. How corporations contribute to a global sustainable governance is the most vague of the
ESG, and could include anything from corporate donations to Black Lives Matter
to supporting UN agencies such as WHO.
The crucial central goal of ESG strategists is to
create a shift to inefficient and costly alternative energy, the Zero Carbon
promised utopia. It is being driven by the world’s major financial
institutions and central banks. They have created a dazzling array of
organizations to drive their green investing agenda.
In 2013, well before the coronavirus,
the major Wall Street bank, Morgan Stanley, created its own Institute for
Sustainable Investing. This was soon expanded in 2015 when Morgan Stanley
joined the Steering Committee of the Partnership for Carbon Accounting
Financials (PCAF). On its website the they state,
“PCAF is based upon
the Paris Climate Agreement’s position that the global community should strive
to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and that society
should decarbonize and reach net zero emissions by
2050.”
By 2020 the PCAF had more than 100 banks and
financial institutions including ABN Amro, Nat West,
Lloyds Bank, Barclays, Bank of America, Citi Group,
CIBC, Danske Bank and others. Several of the PCAF member banks
have been indicted in money laundering cases. Now they sense a new role as
virtue-models to change the world economy, if we are to believe the rhetoric.
Notably, former Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney is an “Observer”
or consultant to the PCAF.
In August 2020 the PCAF published a draft standard
outlining a proposed approach for global carbon accounting. This means the
bankers are creating their own accounting rules for how to rate or value a
company’s carbon footprint or green profile.

Central Role of Mark Carney . . . .

“Lost & Fearful in The
Middle East”
https://scheerpost.com/2024/02/08/patrick-lawrence-lost-fearful-in-the-middle-east/
with Patrick Lawrence
The
Biden regime wanders in a funhouse of its own making.
Of all
the amateurish moments to arise as the Biden regime conducts its foreign
policy, the White House’s official statement as B1–B bombers let loose over Iraq
and Syria last Friday may be the taker of the cake.
As the ordnance fell on 85 targets in seven
locations, many of them outposts of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, our addled
president felt compelled to insist, “The United States does not seek conflict
in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world.”
How many times have we heard this since these latest
operations in Iraq, Syria and Yemen began? Antony Blinken,
the secretary of state, has said the same thing in the same words. Lloyd Austin, the defense secretary, has, too. So has Jake
Sullivan, the national security adviser. So has John Kirby, the National
Security Council spokesman.
Once we are finished counting, we can consider the
astounding stupidity that has led the Biden regime into this impossible
contradiction. Reflecting the president’s compulsive support for Israel over
the whole of his political life, the U.S. has incautiously stayed with the
Zionist state as it seeks to widen the war all the way to Iran by way of
Lebanon and Syria.
Now, as the war runs straight up to the Islamic
Republic’s borders, Biden and his people take to insisting they do not want
that wider war the Israelis are bent on provoking.
I honestly cannot think of other occasions in the
history of American foreign policy that match this one for its sheer… what? … the sheer botch of it. There must be some,
or many given America’s conduct these past seven decades, but they do not come
readily to mind.
Escalation, to take the most obvious problem, is not
the right way to deescalate. You cannot begin bombing other nations —
illegally, let’s not forget — while killing noncombatants in the process (as
the Iraqis and Syrians have charged), and tell them in simultaneous statements
that you do not wish to provoke conflict.
Well, you can, but you cannot expect to be taken
seriously.
‘Illusory
Truth Effect’
I start to think the Biden administration now
resorts to one of the propagandist’s cardinal rules: Say something nonsensical
often enough and people, even intelligent people, will begin to believe it.
Psychologists have called this the illusory truth effect since researchers at
Villanova and Temple universities discovered this
common vulnerability among us in the late–1970s. . . . .

“An
Outright War against all Humanity: the Planet's 8 Billion people.”
We are currently at the crossroads of the
Most Serious Economic and Social Crisis in World History. It is an
outright war against all humanity: the Planet’s 8 billion people.
“The current global
crisis (2020-2023) –which is ongoing– has literally disrupted and destroyed
people’s lives Worldwide in the course of the last three years.
Everything is
interrelated:
·
the Covid
pandemic, the mRNA vaccine,
·
the
relentless destabilization of the global economy resulting in
mass poverty, famines,
·
the destabilization of the Nation
State, the destruction of democracy,
·

·

·
the hikes in the prices of energy and
food,
·
financial fraud, corrupt governments,
·
media disinformation,
·
the demise of international diplomacy,
·
the
threat of nuclear war.
The focus of the
article below (written at the height of the 2007-2009 Economic Crisis)
is on
“Food, Water and Fuel. Three Fundamental Necessities of Life in Jeopardy”.
Needless to say,
these concepts have a direct bearing on our understanding of the ongoing
2020-2024 Economic and Social Crisis.
Access to Food, Water
and Energy pertains to the “Reproduction of Real Life” which is the very
basis of human civilization.
“Reproduction
of Real Life” is not limited to “Basic Human Needs” (e.g. privatization of
water, reproduction of the agricultural cycle).
It also pertains to the concurrent reproduction of the institutions
of civil society including schools and universities, science,
knowledge, social and family relations, the structures of the nation state,
justice, culture, history, international relations, all of which are currently
in jeopardy.
The article also focusses on
the U.S. population control agenda as contained in the National Security Study Memorandum 200 (NSSSM 200) formulated during the Nixon
Administration.
The U.S. Congress set
up a Commission on “Population Growth and the American Future”. (See Center
for Research on Population and Security).
Under the helm of Henry
Kissinger, the Commission’s unspoken objective was to curb World
population with a view to serving US strategic and national security
interests.
It is worth noting
that the NSSSM 200 has been the source of inspiration of Klaus Schwab, et
al in the formulation of the World Economic Forum’s
Depopulation Agenda.
What is at stake is a
project formulated by the financial elites to undermine the “Reproduction of
Real Life”, whereby large sectors of the World population will
be precipitated into abysmal poverty and despair.

The

Control over Humans
Introduction
It is called “Predictive
Programming” and refers to any kind of warning we are receiving in often
very open ways, sometimes in sketchy, opaque, coded ways or camouflaged as
something else than what it is supposed to warn us – but the warning, or call
it “informing”, is a MUST for the Dark Cult that is currently running humanity,
to succeed.
It is visible time
and again. Just think of covid — the deadly plandemic – that struck worldwide humanity at midnight
January 1, 2020, at the beginning of UN Agenda 2030, and what later joined the
UN Agenda, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Great Reset.
As the WEF and its handlers, we may call it the Financial-Military-IT-Media-Pharma (FMIMP) complex, pushes for ever-more control
over humans – the survivors, after the eugenists have
done much of their job – it aims at ever-more digitization, Artificial
Intelligence (AI), becomes ever-more omnipresent in whatever we do.
“Their” plan may or may not include chip implants in
brains, or simply the use of the “vaxx inserted”
highly magnetic and electronics-sensitive graphite, to transform humans into transhumans. It could be called a modern way of Frankensteinization
of humanity.
Hollywood
But first, how many plandemic
predictive movies did Hollywood produce?
There were no less than 18 Pandemic and Virus-Themed
Movies in the last 60 years, “That
Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat”, says Tori Whitacre Martonicz
on infectioncontroltoday.com.
These plandemic movies include:
·
The Mask of the Red Death (1964) – with Vincent Price;
·
The Andromeda Strain (1971) – starring: James Olson, David
Wayne, Arthur Hill, and Kate Reid;
·
Outbreak (1995) – with Dustin Hoffman, Rene

·
Contagion (2011) – with a star-studded cast,
including Starring: Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon,
Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet;
·
World War Z (2013) – with Brad Pitt;
·
The Bird Box (2018 – remember the Bird Flu?) – with Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich;
and finally

Infection (2019) – starring
Rubén Guevara, Leonidas Urbina, Magdiel
González.
For full list, see this.
After the 2019 “Infection” warning, the real “thing”
hit – the covid-19 plandemic. Pardon, it should read
“pandemic”, but the viral disease’s highly visible planning makes it to a Plandemic.
At the latest since the WEF Davos24 – which closed
its doors some 3 weeks ago – we are being told – and repeated ad nauseam – that there is a virus
“X” out there, not yet defined, but out there it is, randomly poking around.
And to calm us down, Pfizer tells us they are already working on a “vaccine”
for the unknown virus. That is perfect, so we can sleep at night.

2024. The World Is Falling Apart But the Show Must Go On…
Who knows, maybe this warning will be followed also
by a star-studded Hollywood flick, perhaps with a title like “When Virus X comes to Town”. The more amazing and world-famous stars, the more impressive.
Why would a renowned star lend him / her-self for such a movie, if it was not
maybe linked to something that could indeed happen in the future?
You bet; these famous actors know what they are
doing – and what they are paid for. And you are glued to the screen – scared but
prepared to what is to come. So, when it hits, it hits you in the know – and in
the knee form behind, so that your bending down comes
naturally.

“Neuroweapons
and the Worldwide “Battle” to Control of Human Brains.
Must be Stopped Immediately”
https://www.globalresearch.ca/world-competition-control-human-brains-should-stopped/5849422
by Mojmir Babacek
In December 2021 the Naval postgraduate school
in Monterey, California approved for public release the study of its students
Joshua D. Gramm and Brian A. Branagan with the title
“Neurowar Is Here!“, which gained them a Master of
Science degree in Defence Analysis (see this). In the study they stated:
“great power competition has returned to the
forefront of international relations, as China and Russia seek to contest
America’s global leadership… this contest is ultimately a battle… to manipulate
and control both adversaries and domestic populations alike. The battle for
influence begins and ends in the human mind, where reality is perceived“ (pg. V) .
They
identified neuroweapons as the weapons of this
battle,
“that specifically target the brain or the central nervous system in order to
affect the targeted person’s mental state, mental capacity and ultimately the
person’s behavior in a specific and predictable way” (pg.3). Does not it mean
that we are living in a world, where
mass media are (at the request of governments) is hiding from people the
ongoing battle for the control of their minds and thoughts?
In the year 2000 the European Parliament’s Panel for
the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) published the study on Crowd
Control Technologies, where it admitted that “In October 1999 NATO announced a
new policy on non-lethal weapons and their place in allied arsenals” and explained that
“The most controversial non-lethal crowd control and
anti-materiel technology proposed by the US are so-called Radio Frequency
or Directed Energy Weapons that can allegedly manipulate human behavior in
a variety of unusual ways“ and “the greatest concern is with systems which can
directly interact with the human nervous system… The research undertaken to
date both in the US and in Russia can be divided into two related areas: (i) individual mind control and (ii) crowd control“ (pg. XIV, LIIII).
READ MORE: Control The Human Brain,
Control the World
The fact that the mass media in NATO countries never
publicly discussed those weapons proves that the NATO member states signed an
agreement that they will classify their existence. Consequently the only way to
get those weapons banned is to declassify them by massive support of their ban.
If this happens the EU, which is actually working on the legislation on
artificial intelligence, will have to include there, in order to remain a
democratic power structure in the eyes of the general public, the ban of the
use of energies which make it possible to use the artificial intelligence and neurotechnologies for the remote control of the human
nervous system.
Actually, the EU is the only big agglomeration of
states that does not own technology of mass manipulation of human brains.
China, with the help of Russia, recently finished the construction of its
system in Sanya in the Hainan province (see this and this), the USA operates the system HAARP and Russia operates the system Sura. All those systems are among others
capable of producing strong electric currents in the ionosphere by transmitting
there, by systems of terrestrial antennas, pulsed microwaves in brain
frequencies. Those alternating currents produce in the ionosphere strong
electromagnetic waves in the brain frequencies which reach large areas of the
planet and will control the brain activity of their populations (Elon Musk’s system Starlink with
20.000 satellites around the planet could be used for the same purpose, or 5G
system of satellites, if they were pulsing their transmissions in the human
brain’s frequencies).
At the
present time there exists no international agreement banning the use of
artificial intelligence and neurotechnologies for the
remote control of the human nervous systems, thoughts, emotions, subconscious etc. There is no
other explanation for it, than that the great powers are competing to master
the world in this way. In 1997 the Strategic Studies Institute at the U.S. Army
War College published the book ”Revolution in Military
Affairs and Conflict Short of War”, where it wrote:
”Potential or possible supporters of the insurgency
around the world were identified using the comprehensive Interagency Integrated
Database. These were categorized as ”potential” or ”active”, with sophisticated
personality simulations used to develop, tailor, and focus psychological
campaigns for each” (pg. 24-25).
This is an American project for global control of
the world. There is no doubt that similar projects are being developed in
China and Russia as well (though to control an individual brain, directed energy has to be used).
To protect the world history from reaching this end,
it is necessary that world governments sign an international agreement banning
the use of neurotechnologies and artificial
intelligence to control the activity of human brains, the observation of which
would be supervised by the United Nations Organization (which eventually should
turn to be rather democratic organization instead of an organization, controlled
by superpowers, who have veto rights). For now, we
can help it
only by requiring the European Parliament to ban technologies of remote control
of the activity of the human nervous system with the use of energies, invented
by physicists. The European Union can set an example and a challenge to the
rest of the world in this way.

Although his
questions were on the sophomoric side, Tucker Carlson did a good thing by
giving us a two hour view of how Putin thinks. The neoconservative
warmongers and the shills for the armament industries are angry, because Putin
did not present as they have portrayed him–an evil aggressor out to conquer
Europe.

Putin Just Scored a Knockout Blow to Europe and the WEF
What comes across
from Carlson’s interview with Putin is that Putin remains a captive, after all
the betrayals and deceptions he has suffered, of his ideal of reaching an agreement
with the West. He discounts Washington’s insistence on its
hegemony. The fact doesn’t fit with Putin’s idealistic approach to
international relations. Putin still hopes for sanity and good will to emerge
in the West. His idealism blocks him from proactive actions, which he
regards as provocative. He is yet to accept that his tolerance of Western
aggression encourages more aggression and thus continues to frustrate the
emergence of the cooperative multipolar world that he
envisions.
I don’t think we are going to get the mutual defense
treaty between Russia, China, and Iran that would cause Washington’s
neoconservatives to accept reality and to give up their goal of American
hegemony.
Watching the interview will help to free you from
the propaganda that keeps you in The Matrix.
My concern remains that Putin’s reasonableness will
continue to be taken advantage of by Washington until the conflict Putin seeks
to avoid becomes unavoidable.

“What Has the Putin Interview Achieved?”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/12/what-has-the-putin-interview-achieved/
by Tony Kevin
It is clear by now that both Vladimir Putin and
Tucker Carlson took risks in embarking on their interview last week, gambles
that appear to be paying off so far.
Putin was sick of rude and argumentative Western
journalists. He had given no Western media interviews since Russia’s military
operation in Ukraine began two years ago. He demanded, and received from
Carlson, a serious interview in which he would
be free to develop his facts and arguments.
He rather sharply reminded Carlson of the agreed
ground rules at the outset of the interview, saying: “Are we having a
talk show or a serious conversation?”
A chastened Carlson replied: ‘Thank you, it’s
formidably serious.” And he spent the next two hours listening as Putin
expounded at length on his main subjects: Russian-Ukrainian interconnected
national histories since 862; and the causes, course and likely end of the
present war in Ukraine. [Available in English
voice and text on the Kremlin official website.]
This style of interview left Carlson vulnerable to
ridicule from leading Western mainstream media, such as The
Guardian, The
Economist, The
New York Times, Washington
Post and
the BBC.
They all essentially alleged that Carlson had
betrayed his profession by fluffing the opportunity to put Putin on the spot
with hard “gotcha” questions. Their consensus: the interview was boring,
irrelevant, rambling, full of lies, simply not worth
anybody’s time watching or reading.
It is clear already that much of the world’s
journalistic universe disagrees. Putin’s extended history
lesson appears in the world’s media and on social media platforms to have
already made an impact on serious U.S., European and Global South audiences.
Carlson’s reputation as a serious dissident Western journalist can only be
enhanced by this conversation with the Russian president.

“The Military Routinely Disperses Aluminum-Coated
Fiberglass into the Air”
https://www.globalresearch.ca/military-routinely-disperses-aluminum-coated-fiberglass-air/5849000
by Dr. Joseph Mercola
In
addition to the weather modification1 going on around the world,
militaries around the world are also routinely dispersing tiny bits of
aluminum-coated fiberglass and plastic — known as “chaff” — into the air
column, to shield aircraft and ships from enemy radar.2 Not
surprisingly, this has been done for decades, without clear evidence that it’s
safe for humans and the environment.
According to a 1998 General Accounting Office report3
and a 1999 follow-up report4 by the Naval Research Laboratory, the
environmental, human and agricultural impacts of chaff used in military
training scenarios at the time were “negligible and far less than those from
other man-made emissions,” but does that really mean it’s safe? As explained in
a 2001 Navy Medicine paper:5
“Radiofrequency (RF) chaff is an
electronic countermeasure designed to reflect radar waves and obscure planes,
ships, and other assets from radar tracking sources.
Chaff
consists of aluminum-coated glass fibers (also referred to as dipoles) ranging
in lengths from 0.8 to 0.75 cm. Chaff is released or dispensed from military
vehicles in cartridges or projectiles that contain millions of dipoles.
When deployed, a diffuse cloud of dipoles is formed
that is undetectable to the human eye. Chaff is a very light material that can
remain suspended in air anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours and can travel
considerable distances from its release point, depending on prevailing
atmospheric conditions.
Training for military personnel, particularly
aircraft pilots, in the use of chaff is necessary to deploy this electronic
countermeasure effectively. As with most acquired skills, the deployment of
chaff must be maintained by practicing in-flight release during training.
It is estimated that the U.S. Armed Forces dispense
about 500 tons of chaff per year, with most chaff being released during
training exercises within the continental United States.”

Safe? . . . .

“Genocide Joe” sets the tone for US election year
https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/tamara-nassar/genocide-joe-sets-tone-us-election-year
by Tamara Nassar
Joe
Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign has become closely tied to a new moniker:
“Genocide Joe.”
The US president can hardly make a public appearance
without being protested for his role in Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in
the Gaza Strip, which entered its fifth month on Wednesday.
Biden still refuses to implement a ceasefire even as
more than 4 percent of Gaza’s population has been killed,
injured or missing and presumed dead.
The Biden administration has given Israel carte
blanche to carry out its genocide in Gaza with total impunity, near-constant delivery of weaponry and even bypassing Congress to greenlight
weapons sales to Israel. But administration officials discuss the possibility
of a ceasefire as if it’s a distant aspiration they’re struggling to achieve.
In reality, the Biden administration holds the power
to cease the supply of military aid to Israel at any moment.
With November’s US presidential elections on the
horizon, Biden’s actions in Gaza are coming under greater scrutiny.
But protests are also extending to other members of
the Biden administration and Democratic lawmakers more broadly. Activists are
heckling politicians on Capitol Hill, interrupting campaign rallies, staging
walkouts and engaging in other forms of dissent.

“Arab American outrage mounts over Biden’s support
for Israel amid Gaza carnage”
by Michael Jansen
Angered over the Biden administration’s supine
support of Israel’s war on Gaza, Arab American community leaders in the swing
state of Michigan postponed this week’s virtual discussion with US
Vice President Kamala Harris. Last week, her office held an
exchange on Gaza and a dozen community leaders were set to listen to
Harris’ own take on administration policy on Monday.
She has either been heckled or boycotted by Arab and
non-Arab citizens focused on Gaza during her ongoing campaign tour. A CNN poll
conducted last December found that only one-third of US respondents overall
supported the administration’s policy on Gaza.
Arab Americans are furious and feel they
have been excluded from Biden administration consideration in Gaza
policymaking.
Since Hamas sudenly
attacked Israel on October 7, Biden has repeatedly stated that Israel has the
“right to defend itself” without placing limits on the Israeli offensive which
has killed, maimed, and disappeared 100,000 Gazans
according to the UN.
The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western
Asia has reported that one in every 100 people in Gaza was killed in the first
100 days of the war, a rate greater than any other armed conflict this
century.
“The ongoing war stands out as unprecedented in the
scale of death, destruction, and suffering, with repercussions that will echo
for generations to come,” the Commission stated.
President Joe Biden has not been moved by
the deaths and devastation wreaked on Gaza and
has continued transporting weapons to Israel and providing Israel with
political cover.
He seeks to allocate $14 billion in military aid to
Israel on top of the $3.8 billion donated annually.
“The president’s refusal to change course or even to
publicly acknowledge his mistakes is a grave insult to people here in Michigan,
to Michigan Democrats in particular,” Abbas Alawieh, spokesman of “Listen to Michigan”, told CNN last
week. This campaign urges Democrats to vote “uuncommitted”
in the state’s February 27th presidential primary in response to refusal
to demand an Israeli ceasefire and end to the war.
He objected to
the “hypocrisy of telling us privately that the administration
has made mistakes while continuing to fail to hold [Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin] Netanyahu accountable publicly”.
He said this amounts to “a blatant display of
moral bankruptcy that will have political consequences here in Michigan.” . . .

“Muslims abandon UK Labour
over “deeply offensive” Gaza position”
by Omar Karmi
Keir Starmer
– sorry, Sir Keir Starmer – has a Palestine
problem.
Britain’s
Labour Party leader – and head of His Majesty’s
Official Opposition – ought to be a shoe-in to win the UK’s next general
election, most likely some time later this year.
Labour has consistently polled significantly ahead of a ruling Conservative Party whose 15
years in power have been marked by division, incompetence and corruption.
Starmer has maintained the lead with a simple
strategy: Take your base for granted and appeal to swing voters by ditching every promise or traditional Labour
policy that got you elected as leader by Labour
members in the first place, remaking your party in the image of the
Conservative Party it is supposed to be challenging.
Thus, in the name of “fiscal responsibility,” the Labour shadow cabinet – the opposition’s would-be
government – has ditched any suggestion of tax reform to fund spending on health or education,
traditionally two areas of Labour focus.
Starmer has refused to back unions –
traditionally the backbone of Labour support – over
pay disputes and even banned Labour politicians from
joining picket lines.
And just last week, he effectively dropped a $35 billion green investment pledge,
pretty much the last of his policies standing.
It is a tried and tested election strategy: Keep
your head under the parapet in order to make yourself as small a target as
possible, closing any avenue of attack from political opponents.
And it has been working. Core Labour
supporters seemed to buy the argument that all is fair in trying to win a
general election and that the party would eventually return to its roots.
Unfortunately for Starmer,
he has been badly exposed by Gaza.
Craven
and complicit
Parroting Conservative policy on domestic issues to
leave your opponents without ammunition ahead of a vote is one thing; parroting
the British government’s fulsome support for a foreign country’s genocidal
violence against a largely defenseless civilian population takes craven to
quite another level.
Starmer has twisted himself into pretzels trying
to avoid calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
He has tried out concepts like “sustainable” ceasefires or “humanitarian pauses” all, it seems,
in an attempt to give Israel as much time as it wants to finish its campaign of
ethnic cleansing in Gaza under the guise of
“self-defense.”
The Labour leader even
appeared to endorse Israel cutting off food, water,
electricity and fuel supplies to Gaza’s 2.3 million people, in an interview with a London radio station, remarks he
then tried to “clarify” after a backlash.

“How Britain is Helping

(audio, 1:25:39)
The MintPress
podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in
the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special
interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target
dissent. “The Watchdog” goes against the grain by casting a light on stories
largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media.
Even after more than 100 days of genocidal attacks
on Gaza, the Israeli assault continues to rage. The onslaught itself is very
well documented by courageous Palestinian journalists who risk their lives
daily. However, the role of Western governments in all this is not nearly as
widely reported.
One outlet that has tried to buck this trend is Declassified
UK, which has
constantly shone a light on the activities of Great Britain and the United
States in enabling the genocidal attack.
Joining “The Watchdog” today to talk about this
issue is returning guest Matt Kennard, a writer and investigative journalist
for Declassified UK. Kennard has broken several stories about secret
British collaboration and support for Israeli actions, which he will discuss
today. Previously, he worked as a reporter for The Financial Times and was a
fellow and a director of the Center For Investigative
Journalism in London. His latest book is “Silent Coup: How Corporations

“Genocide Meets French Devotion to Israel”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/11/diana-johnstone-genocide-meets-french-devotion-to-israel/
by Diana
Johnstone
French
support to Israel is longstanding and political, but tinged with semi-religious
devotion rooted in recent history.
Israel’s loyal supporters in the West
combat rising world indignation over the suffering of the Palestinian people by
changing the subject.
When Gazan families are
buried under the rubble of their homes, it’s not about the plight of
the dispossessed Palestinians; it’s about eternal Jewish victims; it’s
about “Islamic terrorism;” or it’s about a threat to “Western values.”
That is the line taken by most of the French media
and political class.
Or there is recourse to Biblical story-telling,
featuring vengeance, ethnic slaughter and prophecy of doom. In Israel, Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declares a struggle between good and evil:
“We are the people of the light, they are the people
of darkness and light shall triumph over darkness. Now my role is to lead all Israelis to an overpowering
victory… We shall realize the prophecy of Isaiah…”
In the United States of America, the crazed
prophecies of the Israeli leader find support from an American variant of
Judeo-Christianity, more Judeo than Christian, whose followers are taught to
believe that gentle Jesus will zoom back to earth as a murderous Avenger while
his faithful float up to heaven.
France & the Shoah
Skeptical France is very far from such fantasies.
French support to Israel is longstanding and political, but tinged with
semi-religious devotion rooted in recent history.
France is officially, even ostentatiously, a secular
nation, considerably de-christianized over the past
two hundred years.
To a unique extent, over the past half century, this
religious void has been filled by the sacred remembrance of the Shoah, as the Holocaust is usually called here.
It all began in 1954 when 27-year-old Jewish
journalist named Eliezer Wiesel met the 70-year-old
Catholic novelist François Mauriac in Paris.
Mauriac was deeply moved by Wiesel’s “resurrection”
from his experience as a prisoner in Auschwitz, seeing him as a Christ figure.
For Mauriac, the sacrifice of the Jews recalled the Crucifixion of Jesus.
With help from the prominent French writer, Wiesel
transformed his copious Yiddish notes into a French memoir, La Nuit
(Night), the testimony that transformed him into a major spiritual figure of
the post-World War II era.
It was Mauriac, the devout Christian, who saw in
Wiesel and his people the parallels with Christianity, which as the Shoah was destined to take on the attributes of a state
religion in France as memories of the Nazi occupation were transformed into
sacred myth.
An Alliance Against Arab
Nationalism
When the Nazis invaded France, there were
approximately 320,000 Jewish people living in France, including a large number
of foreign nationals who had fled from anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe.
Those unfortunate exiles made up the bulk of the
74,000 Jews who were brutally rounded up and deported under German
occupation. These deportations are the principal factual basis for what
developed into a sense of national responsibility for the Shoah
comparable to that of Germany itself.
However, of all Nazi-occupied countries, France is
the country where the largest percentage of Jews escaped Nazi
deportations. An estimated 75 percent of Jews survived the occupation without
being deported, including around 90 percent of Jews with French
citizenship. . . . .

Dear Friends of Julian Assange and of Free Speech,
Day X is here: Julian Assange’s appeal hearing will take place on February 20-21 2024 in the UK High Court. The hearing may be the last chance in the British courts to stop Julian Assange’s extradition.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., House Resolution 934 calls for an end to the prosecution of Assange, and a lawsuit against alleged CIA spying on Assange visitors is allowed to proceed.
Julian Assange's Final Appeal to be held in UK High Court February 20-21 2024
The UK High Court has confirmed that Julian Assange’s Final Appeal hearing will take place on February 20-21 2024.
This decisive stage in Julian Assange’s appeals will determine one of two outcomes: whether Assange will have further opportunities to argue his case before the domestic (UK) courts, or whether he will have exhausted all appeals without a possibility for further appeal in the UK and thus enter the process of extradition. An application before the European Court of Human Rights remains a possibility.

Call Congress: Support H. R. 934
House Resolution 934, calling for an end to the prosecution of Julian Assange and affirming the First Amendment rights for journalists, needs cosponsors to be introduced to the House floor for a vote — so we need to urge our representatives to support H.R. 934 right away!
The Resolution expresses the sense of the House of Representatives "that regular journalistic activities are protected under the First Amendment, and that the United States ought to drop all charges against and attempts to extradite Julian Assange."
Call your congressmembers and urge them to sign on as co-sponsors!
Lawsuit Against Alleged CIA Spying On Assange Visitors Allowed To Proceed
A federal judge in New York ruled that four American attorneys and journalists, who visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange while he was in the Ecuador Embassy in London, may sue the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for its role in the alleged copying of the contents of their electronic devices.
The decision comes after the first hearing held in November, when, according to journalist Kevin Gosztola, “the government effectively asserted in a U.S. courtroom that Americans cease to have constitutional privacy protections from U.S. government intrusion when they travel abroad.”

In our complex world, understanding global
events is crucial. We hunger for truth about Amazon rainforests, Tibet and
China, Niger in Africa, Antarctica, Guyana, and the ongoing tensions between
Russia and Europe in Ukraine, as well as the conflict between Hamas and Israel
supported by the United States. To make informed decisions, we must carefully
analyze the facts.
History teaches us that truth can be suppressed
under regimes like Stalinist Russia, Hitlerite
Germany, or the Iraq war waged on false intelligence. Manipulated narratives,
elegant lies, and misinformation have led to devastating consequences, from
gulags and wars to concentration camps. Yet, brave individuals—Socrates,
Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, George Orwell, and Martin Luther King Jr.—stood by the
truth, regardless of the odds.
Video: “This is much worse than you can

Today, Julian Assange
stands alongside these names. His work challenges power structures, revealing
uncomfortable truths hidden by the United States Government.
We are
now reaching a critical stage in Julian Assange’s
fight against U.S. extradition with appeal hearings taking place at the U.K.
High Court on February 20 and 21.
The new UN Special Rapporteur
on Torture Alice Jill Edwards on Tuesday called on the U.K. to
halt the extradition,
stating that if it goes forward, Assange would be at
risk of treatment amounting to torture or other forms of ill-treatment or
punishment.
Amnesty International in a petition it organizes
says that “USA must drop charges against Julian Assange.
He fully deserves to be released; he already paid a heavy price for what he
did”.
To put as much pressure on the court as possible, we
would also urge all of you to support these events before the hearings:
·
February 14: The Geneva Press Club, alongside RSF Switzerland, hosting
an online and in-person talk with Stella Assange.
Stella will be available for interviews after the event.
·
February 15: The Freedom of the Press Foundation
online event on Assange. Speakers include Cindy Cohn,
executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation; Carrie DeCell, senior staff attorney at the Knight First Amendment
Institute; Trevor Timm, executive director of Freedom
of the Press Foundation; and Ben Wizner, director of
the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project.
And here is this useful thread from
Stella laying
out the legal arguments in the case.

“Dear Mr High
Commissioner: Help Free Assange”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/09/dear-mr-high-commissioner-help-free-assange/
by
Christophe Peschoux
Open
Letter to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights — Rule of law
and raison d’etat : Julian Assange must be
released.
Mr. High Commissioner,
On 20-21 February, a High Court in London will
decide Julian Assange’s fate: freedom or death. Two
judges will decide whether the WikiLeaks founder will still be able to lodge an ultimate
appeal, or will end his days in an American jail.
Mr. Assange has committed
no crime. His only fault is to have revealed some of the crimes of the powerful
of our time. Lèse majesté
crime!
American wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere
have destroyed millions of lives and ruined these countries for generations to
come. No one has been prosecuted. On the contrary, these crimes have been
covered up with impunity in the United States. And yet Mr. Assange
is being punished for having published evidence of some of them. Political justice.
He is charged under a treason law dating from the first world war in 1917. Can one betray the laws of a
country that is not our own? Is American law universal? To accept it
would be to dangerously open the door to the arbitrariness that comes with
unchecked power: tomorrow, another powerful state could arrogate to itself the
right, under the law of the strongest, to prosecute a foreign journalist,
researcher or rights activist accused of breaking its law.
Under international law, depriving someone of their
liberty is an exceptional decision, which must be duly justified to ensure fair
proceedings. Yet, presumed innocent like any accused, Mr. Assange
has been imprisoned without trial for almost five years as a dangerous criminal
in a high-security prison near London. No release on bail for him, under
judicial supervision, pending the outcome of proceedings that are clearly
dragging their feet and taking their ease with time — the short time of a man’s
life. . . . .

“Australian PM Albanese and 85 Other MPs Vote to End
Assange Incarceration”
by Diego Ramos
The Australian
House of Representatives voted on Wednesday in favor of a motion supporting the
end of Julian Assange’s incarceration and to bring
him back to Australia. Among the supporters of the motion is Australian Prime
Minister Anthony Albanese, who, regarding the long term prosecution and
detention of Assange, declared, “enough
is enough.”
In the motion introduced by MP Andrew Wilkie, the argument is made for the release of Assange from Belmarsh Prison in
the UK and returned to Australia. This comes ahead of next week’s court ruling
on Assange’s extradition appeal.
Wilkie said, “It will send a very powerful
political signal to the British government and to the US government that the
British government should not entertain the idea of Mr
Assange being extradited to the US.”
86 members of the house of
representatives, including Albanese, voted in favor of the motion; 42
members voted against it.
Wilkie, speaking to Parliament about Assange stated, “Surely this man has suffered enough. The
matter must be brought to an end.”
Adam Bandt, member of
Australian Parliament and leader of the Australian Greens, said, “…[T]his sets an incredibly chilling precedent for
journalists in the future and for journalists’ ability to hold governments to
account, to say uncomfortable things about governments … and to know that you
can tell the truth without facing imprisonment and without facing a risk to
your own life.”
If Assange’s appeal is
rejected, he faces immediate extradition to the United States, where he would
be set to face trial for various charges, including the release of confidential
military records and diplomatic cables in 2010.

“Biden Administration Prolongs Economic Warfare on
Cuba”
by Dario
Calvisi
No
Significant Change in U.S. Policy Toward Cuba As the Biden Administration
Concedes That It “Has Not Even Begun the Review Process”
to Remove Cuba from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism
The U.S.-enforced embargo on Cuba is now more than
60 years old. First introduced by the Kennedy administration in February 1962,
it remains one of the most anachronistic and cruel legacies of the Cold War,
with no credible rationale supporting it today.
As CovertAction
Magazine reported, President Biden, who had “long courted
the vote of the Cuban-American lobby,” unnecessarily prolonged the suffering of
the Cuban people on September 14, 2023, by extending the embargo by one more
year, claiming that the blockade “was in the national interest of the United
States.”
The Obama administration had raised some hopes of improved relations with Havana,
restoring diplomatic relations, relaxing travel restrictions and at least
considering a gradual normalization of economic relationships.

“What Did U.S. Intel Really Know About the ‘Chinese’
Virus?”
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/55094.htm
by Pepe Escobar
Hybrid War 2.0 on China, a bipartisan U.S.
operation, is already reaching fever pitch. Its 24/7 full spectrum infowar arm blames China for everything coronavirus-related
– doubling as a diversionist tactic against any informed criticism of woeful
American unpreparedness.
Hysteria predictably reigns. And this is just the
beginning.
A deluge of lawsuits is imminent – such as the one
in the Southern District of Florida entered by Berman Law Group (linked to the
Democrats) and Lucas-Compton (linked to the Republicans). In a nutshell: China
has to shell out tons of cash. To the tune of at least $1.2 trillion, which
happens to be – by surrealist irony – the amount of U.S. Treasury bills held by
Beijing, all the way to $20 trillion, claimed by a lawsuit in Texas.
The prosecution’s case, as Scott Ritter memorably
reminded us, is straight out of Monty Python. It works exactly like this:
“If she weighs the same as a duck…
…she’s made of wood!”
“And therefore…”
“A witch!!!!!”
In Hybrid War 2.0 terms, the current CIA-style
narrative translates as evil China never telling us, the civilized West, there
was a terrible new virus around. If they did, we would have had time to
prepare.
And yet they lied and cheated – by the way,
trademark CIA traits, according to Mike “We Lie, We Cheat, We Steal” Pompeo himself. And they hid everything. And they censored
the truth. So they wanted to infect us all. Now they have to pay for all the
economic and financial damage we are suffering, and for all our dead people.
It’s China’s fault.
All this sound and fury forces us to refocus back to
late 2019 to check out what U.S. intel really knew
then about what would later be identified as Sars-Cov-2.

“Biden Is Mad at Netanyahu? Spare Me”
https://informationclearinghouse.blog/2024/02/14/biden-is-mad-at-netanyahu-spare-me/15/
by
Jack Mirkinson
An
infuriating, thuddingly predictable genre of article
has emerged: the “Biden is really upset with Israel behind the scenes” story.
The
Washington Post published a report on Sunday with a dramatic claim: The
relationship between Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu is terrible. From the Post (emphasis mine): “President
Biden and his top aides are closer to a breach with Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu than at any time since the Gaza War began, no longer
viewing him as a productive partner who can be influenced even in private,
according to several people familiar with their internal discussions. The mounting
frustration with Netanyahu has prompted some of Biden’s aides to urge him
to be more publicly critical of the prime minister over his country’s military
operation in Gaza, according to six people familiar with the conversations, who
spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.”
“Closer to a breach” than “at any time since the
Gaza war began,” you say? “Mounting frustration,” is it? The average reader
could only assume that some big shift in the American approach to Israel’s
assault on Gaza is on the way.
Well, let me amend that. The average reader who has never read a single story about Gaza
before this Washington Post
report could only assume that some big shift in the American approach to
Israel’s assault on Gaza is on the way.
The average reader who has been following Gaza
coverage for the past few months, however, would recognize what has become one of
the more thuddingly predictable and infuriating
genres to emerge post–October 7: the “Biden is really mad at Netanyahu behind the scenes” story. There’s a
problem with these pieces: They have virtually nothing to do with how Biden has
actually handled the war.

“Israeli army gassed my son ‘like Auschwitz,’ mother
of slain Israeli soldier says”
https://thegrayzone.com/2024/01/18/israeli-army-gassed-auschwitz-soldier/
by Wyatt
Reed and Max Blumenthal
An
outraged Israeli mom has sparked an uproar after
accusing the Israeli army of deliberately gassing her son to death while he was
being held in a Gaza tunnel. Now she says the Israeli military had her son’s
gravestone removed after her critical message went viral.
His
killing follows a pattern of Israeli military attacks on Israeli captives in
Gaza, raising questions about the existence of a friendly fire policy to
prevent prisoner swaps.
The mother of a now-dead Israeli soldier captured by
Hamas militants on October 7 says it was the Israeli military, not Palestinian
resistance fighters, who killed her son. In a recently-published post on Facebook, Israeli mother Maayan
Sherman wrote that her son Ron was “indeed murdered – not by Hamas,” but in circumstances
more akin to “Auschwitz and the showers.”
The killing of her son, she wrote, was caused “not
from accidental gunfire, nor from crossfire, but from premeditated murder –
bombing with poison gas.”

“The Killing Fields of Gaza”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/14/the-killing-fields-of-gaza/
by John Wight
Throughout,
and to its eternal shame, the West along with Arab governments in the region
have stood by and offered nothing in the way of serious and meaningful
intervention, writes John Wight.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has
claimed tirelessly to be acting in the name of the Jewish victims of the Nazi
Holocaust with Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
In truth, the actions of his regime and military
these past few months has placed them much closer to the guards than the
inmates at Hitler’s death camps during this dark period in human affairs.
In other words, and put more simply, when your
response to genocide is more genocide, you become precisely that which you
claim to be against. This is precisely where we are now after four months of
the IDF’s murderous and wholly indiscriminate military campaign against the
people of Gaza.
Throughout, and to its eternal shame, the West along
with Arab governments in the region have stood by and offered nothing in the
way of serious and meaningful intervention. Supine and tepid calls for
humanitarian pauses, temporary cessations, ceasefires, the provision of
humanitarian aid; all have dropped and evaporated like snowflakes on the
ground, such has been their impotence.
The result is 13,000 Palestinian children being thus
far sent to their deaths under the missiles and bombs of a 21st century
military machine in the hands of a government comprised of men with 14th
century minds.
Netanyahu and his supporters will not be happy until
the history, culture and entire existence of the Palestinians are relegated to
the museum. This is both evident and implicit in the mad slaughter they have
and are currently engaged in.
A twisted conception of the world as being fashioned
on the basis of might is right and racial hierarchy has throughout human
history produced monsters. And in this respect, Benjamin Netanyahu is merely
the latest in a long line.

“The Unrepentant West: Olaf Scholz
and the Right to Commit Genocide in Gaza”
by Ramzy Baroud
On February 8, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was in Washington on an official
visit, aimed at working jointly with the United States to
make “sure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself”.
If such a statement was made soon after the Al-Aqsa Flood
Operation of October 7, one may cognize its logic, based on
the well-known, inherent bias of both Washington and Berlin towards Israel.
The statement and the visit, however, were conducted
on the 125th day of one of the bloodiest genocides in modern history.
The purpose of the visit was highlighted in a press
conference by White House spokesperson John Kirby, even though, hours later, US
President Joe Biden
admitted that Israel has gone “over the top” in its response
to the Hamas attack on October 7.
If
killing and wounding over 100,000 civilians, and counting,
is Israel’s version of self-defense, then both Scholz
and Biden have done a splendid job in ensuring Israel has everything it needs
to achieve its bloody mission.
However, in this context, who is entitled to
self-defense, Israel or Palestine?
On a recent visit to a hospital in a Middle Eastern
country which remains confidential as a precondition for my visit, I witnessed
one of the most horrific sights one could ever see. Scores of limbless
Palestinian children, some still fighting for their lives, some badly burned
and others in a coma.
Those who were able to use their hands have drawn
Palestinian flags which hung on the walls beside their hospital beds. Some wore
SpongeBob T-shirts and others hats with Disney characters. They were pure,
innocent, and very much Palestinian.
A couple of children flashed the victory sign as
soon as we said our goodbyes. Little kids wanted to communicate to the world
that they remain strong and that they know exactly who they are and where they
come from.
The children were far too young to realize the legal
and political context of their strong feelings towards their homeland.
UN General Assembly Resolution
3236 (XXIX) has ‘affirmed the inalienable right of the
Palestinian people in Palestine (..), the right to self-determination, (and)
the right to national independence and sovereignty”.

“Egypt Building Walled Camp in Sinai Desert to
Absorb Palestinian Refugees from Gaza”
by Dave DeCamp
Egypt is building an 8-square-mile
walled enclosure in the Sinai Desert near
Gaza to prepare for an influx of Palestinian refugees as Israel is vowing to
launch an assault on Rafah, which borders Egypt and
is packed with about 1.5 million Palestinians.
The revelation of Egypt’s construction, which was
reported by The Wall Street Journal and
an Egyptian rights group, signals Cairo is caving to Israeli pressure to allow Palestinians
to enter its territory.
Egyptian officials told the Journal that more than 100,000 people would be able to fit into
the camps they are constructing. If a mass exodus of Palestinians from Gaza
does happen, the Egyptian officials said they want to limit the number of
refugees they allow in to between 50,000 and 60,000.
The Sinai Foundation for Human Rights first reported
on the construction on Wednesday and said the project is expected to be
completed within 10 days. Egyptian officials told the Journal they expect a
broad Israeli offensive on Rafah could start “within
weeks.” Israel must be aware of the construction and will likely try to push as
many Palestinians into the camp as it can.
Israeli government officials have not been shy about their desire to cleanse the Gaza
Strip of its Palestinian population and re-establish Jewish settlements. A
document prepared by Israel’s Intelligence Ministry that was leaked back in October said the best-case scenario for
Israel would be to send all 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza into Egypt.
But Cairo’s opposition to the plan caused Israeli
officials to look elsewhere and suggest Western countries take in Palestinian
refugees. According to Israeli media, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
previously said he was looking for countries to “absorb” Palestinians, but he’s cooled the rhetoric since the Biden administration
criticized other Israeli ministers for making similar comments.

“Columbia students confront Hillary Clinton with her
war crimes”
with Ali
Abunimah
(24:00)
On 9 February, Columbia University’s School of
International and Public Affairs hosted a high-profile event headlined by
Hillary Clinton, titled “Preventing and addressing
conflict-related sexual violence.”
One of the speakers was Jeffrey Gettleman,
the lead author of a major New York
Times story published in December, purporting to corroborate Israel’s
discredited claims of mass rape by Hamas fighters on 7 October – claims that
unfortunately Palestinian American lawmaker Rashida Tlaib is now also parroting despite the lack of evidence.
Gettleman’s story was a journalistic fraud.
As I reported on The Electronic Intifada livestream this week, the Columbia event – co-sponsored by
Georgetown University’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security – was set up to
promote Israel’s discredited claims of 7 October “mass rapes”and
to give this genocidal atrocity propaganda a veneer of academic legitimacy.
The event was carefully stage-managed to exclude any
real public or student participation: No questions were allowed from the floor
and comments were turned off on the event’s YouTube livestream.
But it did not go to plan. Columbia University
students made sure their voices were heard. They interrupted and protested
Hillary Clinton and Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United
Nations.
They confronted Clinton with her history of
supporting or participating in war crimes against the peoples of Iraq, Libya,
Syria, Yemen and Palestine.

“CJ Hopkins compared modern Germany to Nazi Germany.

I don’t normally send these interview posts out to
everyone via email, because I don’t like to flood folks’ in-boxes with every
little thing. I usually just upload them into the Interviews/Press section of my Substack
and leave it at that. I’m making an exception this time because (a) I’m a bit
under the weather, and not up to banging out a column, and (b) I want to
promote FIRE and the “So to Speak” podcast.
If you’re one of my American readers, you’re
probably already familiar with FIRE, i.e., The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. If you’re not, basically, they are like
what the ACLU used to be back when it was still the ACLU. FIRE started off over
20 years ago defending freedom of speech, due process, and other individual
rights in higher education. Since 2022, they’ve been expanding the scope of
their work into the broader world. You can read
about that on
the FIRE website if you’re interested.
Anyway, I had a great talk with Nico Perrino,
FIRE’s Executive Vice President, on the biweekly podcast he does for them, “So
to Speak.” The podcast has been running for a while, but it’s just getting
started on Substack. This interview is their first
one on the platform. I hope you’ll share it and help Nico
and FIRE get their Substack thing going.
As for me, I’ll be back in business relatively soon,
hopefully with a column that’s not about my case for a change.

people, and no one else, to decide what happens in their country.

You’ve heard of “paying it forward,” haven’t you?
Instead of paying back
someone’s kindness, sometimes it is best to pay that kindness forward to
someone else who is in need. If the independent media is trying to create a
different model from the old establishment media, then, is it possible to
create a model based on people paying forward their gratitude to a worthy
cause? If so, how can that idea best be implemented? Join James as he muses on
these questions with Aaron Smith of The Subtlecain Podcast.

Protests News : “India
farmers march: What are their demands? Why is gov’t
blocking roads?”

Thousands of farmers on tractors and trucks are
marching towards the Indian capital, New Delhi, to push the government to
address their demands, including guaranteed prices for their produce and debt
waivers.
Police in Haryana state, which borders Delhi, on Tuesday fired tear gas on farmers to prevent them from
reaching the capital, which has been converted into a fortress, reviving
memories of the 16-month-long agitation by the farmers two years ago. Multiple
entry points to the capital have been sealed by erecting barriers of barbed
wire, spikes and cement blocks.

“25 Years of Venezuelan Defiance”
https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/12/25-years-of-venezuelan-defiance-of-us/
by Vijay Prashad
Some
of the nations that have banded together to defend the U.N. Charter —
particularly Russia and China — have provided Venezuela with alternatives to
the U.S.-dominated financial and trade system, writes Vijay Prashad.
On Feb. 2, 2024, the people of Venezuela
celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Bolivarian Revolution. On that day in
1999, Hugo Chávez took office as the president of
Venezuela and began a process of Latin American integration that — because of
U.S. intransigence — accelerated into an anti-imperialist process.
Chávez’s government, understanding that it would
not be able to govern on behalf of the people and address their needs if it
remained tied to the 1961 Constitution, pushed for deeper and deeper
democratization.
In April 1999, a referendum was held to set up a
Constituent Assembly, tasked with drafting a new constitution. In July 1999,
131 deputies were elected to the assembly. In December 1999, another referendum
was held to ratify the draft constitution. Finally, in July 2000, a general
election was held based on the rules set out in the newly adopted
constitution.
As I remember, it rained hard on the day that the
new constitution was put before the people. Nonetheless, 44 percent of the
electorate turned out to vote in the referendum, with an overwhelming 72
percent choosing a new start for their country.
Under the new constitution, Venezuela’s old Supreme
Court — which the country’s oligarchy had used as a mechanism to prevent any
major social changes from taking place — was replaced by the Supreme Tribunal
of Justice (Tribunal Supremo de Justicia)
or TSJ.
Over the course of the past quarter century, the TSJ
has been disturbed by several controversies, largely stemming from
interventions of the old oligarchy, which refused to accept the major changes
that Chávez pushed through in his early years.
Indeed, in 2002, the judges on the TSJ acquitted the
military leaders who attempted a coup d’état against Chávez,
an act which outraged the majority of Venezuelans.
This ongoing interference eventually led to the
expansion of the bench (as U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had done in
1937 for similar reasons) as well as more legislative control over the
judiciary, as exists in most modern societies (such as in the United States,
where congressional oversight of the courts is institutionalized through
instruments such as the “exceptions clause”).
Nonetheless, this conflict over the TSJ provided an
early weapon for Washington and the Venezuelan oligarchy as they attempted to delegitimise the Chávez
government.
