King George III's bout of madness in 1788 touched off the Regency Crisis of 1788 and triggered a power struggle between factions of Parliament under the Tory Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger and the reform-minded Leader of the Opposition Charles James Fox.
At first, the King's behaviour appears mildly eccentric. He is deeply concerned with the wellbeing and productivity of Great Britain and exhibits an encyclopaedic knowledge of the families of even the most obscure royal appointments. He is devoted to his loving wife, Queen Charlotte, and their large brood of 15 children. However, he is growing more unsettled, partly over the loss of America. His memory fails, his behaviour becomes erratic and hypersexual, he talks and talks, and his urine turns blue.
Two text panels at the end of the film note that the colour of the King's urine suggests that he was suffering from porphyria, adding that the disease is "periodic, unpredictable and hereditary."

The decline of the Roman Empire was a long process, much written about. The causes are commonly attributed to political corruption, internal divisions, and external invasions by barbarian tribes. The date 476 A.D. is generally recognized as the year of the coup de grace, when the Germanic barbarian king Odoacer deposed the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire in Italy, Romulus Augustulus; the Imperial Roman Insignia was transferred East by the Senate in Rome to the Byzantine Emperor, Zeno. A thousand years later, the Eastern Roman Empire fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.
Approximately 300 years after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Holy Roman Empire was formed by the Emperor Charlemagne (748-814) in the year 800; with his death it was disassembled and divided between his three sons.
Within this context of a panoramic view provided by l’histoire de longue durée, we discover the life and work of a modest monk, known as The Venerable Bede, who lived in Northumbria from 673 until his death in 739, at the age of 66. He was born on land owned by the monastery of Wearmouth and from the tender age of 7 his education was entrusted to its abbot, a Benedict Bishop. After a few years, he moved to the new site at Jarrow, under the care of Abbot Ceolfrith and remained there for the rest of his life. Bede was ordained as a deacon at the age of 19 by John, Bishop of Hexham, and became a priest at the age of 30, primarily engaged in a life of study, teaching, and writing. Much of his teaching must have been very basic since most monks, when they arrived at the monastery, were ignorant of Latin and often unable to read their native language. Bede himself likely never traveled beyond Northumbria.
Less than a century before Charlemagne’s historic (albeit temporary) unification of Europe, Bede’s history of the Roman Catholic Church of England, titled Ecclesiastical History of the English People, was completed in 731A.D. Bede’s work was the fruit of many years of research, and it stands as the first written history of the English people, a monumental accomplishment, providing rare information from a variety of written sources and oral interviews about social, economic, and political life in the early medieval Church of Anglo-Saxon England.
What is remarkable about his history is not its eloquence (this was a common characteristic in Latin prose among educated medieval monks); nor is it its originality, nor his prolific output which makes his work outstanding (most of his writings are standard commentaries on books of the Bible, comparable today to the writing of textbooks for school children, and all of it was derivative, devoid of original insights). What marked Bede’s history as being unusual is the context of an extreme paucity of documentary sources from which he was able to obtain only fragments of information and then bring them together for historical analysis. His theme seems to have been order out of chaos. He stood as a defender of the Roman Catholic heritage of Order under the Empire and struggled against Heresy wherever he saw it. This imperial ideological viewpoint oriented him to interpret the political and social events of his day as constituting either centrifugal or centripetal forces which must be either defended or opposed according to the imperial Roman doctrine.
Bede’s writings were based in part on resources in the Northumbian library located in the small Jarrow Abby, (Jarrow, we are told, had a maximum capacity for around 200 monks; about half the size of the nearby Wearmouth Abby). Although newer and smaller, Jarrow was reputed as being an environment of exceptionally high cultural standards in this period, due to the acquisition of rare books and manuscripts, including histories, hagiography, and biblical commentaries, as well as religious relics and objects of art brought from Italy and France. But what historians judge as being unique about Bede’s historical writing is the voracious appetite he showed for gathering fragments of information acquired from his interviews with contemporaries, who were knowledgeable from their wide travels and their direct experiences with the outside world, coupled with his remarkable ability to synthesize these bits of information into a coherent depiction of historical events long-past.
This 328-page Magnus Opus is divided into five books, each book structured into short chapters, ranging in number from twenty to thirty-four and which cover the period from 54 B.C. to 731 A.D.*

The first chapter of Book One, gives a brief description of “the earliest inhabitants” of Britain and Ireland and the land they occupied. Chapter 2 is an account of Julius Caesar’s invasion of Anglia in 54 BC and his military victories over the Teutonic tribes –the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes, who had settled in the coastal regions of the island since the 5th century BC. Chapter 3 concerns the second Roman invasion of Britain by the Emperor Claudius in 43-47 AD. Here we see an example of Bede’s acumen for developing historical syntheses:
He (Claudius) brought his campaign to a close in the fourth year of his reign, and in the forty-sixth year after the birth of our Lord. This was the year in which a very serious famine occurred in Syria, which is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as having been foretold by the prophet Agabus. Vespasian, who was to succeed Nero as Emperor, was sent by the same Claudius, and brought the Isle of Wright under Roman rule. This island lies off the south coast of Britain and is about thirty miles in length from east to west, and twelve from north to south. Six miles of sea separate it from the mainland at its eastern end, but only three at the west. When Nero succeeded Claudius as Emperor, he attempted no military expeditions, and in consequence, apart from countless other injuries to the Roman State, he nearly lost Britain, for during his reign two most noble towns there were taken and destroyed.(p.49)
Book Two starts with a short chapter on “the death of Pope Gregory” (590-604) and ends with the defeat of the Christian King Edwin in Chapter 20.
The glorious reign of Edwin over England and Britons alike lasted seventeen years, during the last six of which, as I have said, he labored for the kingdom of Christ. Then the British King Cadwalla rebelled against him, supported by Penda, a warrior of the Mercian royal house, who from then onwards ruled that nation with varying success for twenty-two years. In a fierce battle on the field called Haethfelth on the twelfth of October 633, when he was 48 years old, Edwin was killed, and his entire army destroyed or scattered. In the same battle, Osfrid, a gallant young warrior, one of Edwin’s sons, was killed before his father. Another son, Eadfrid, was compelled to submit to Penda, who subsequently in breach of a solemn promise put his to death during the reign of Oswald.
At this time a terrible slaughter took place among the Northumbrian church and nation, the more horrible because it was carried out by two commanders, one of whom was a pagan and the other a barbarian more savage than any pagan. For Penda and all his Mercians were idol-worshippers ignorant of the name of Christ, but Cadwalla, although he professed to call himself a Christian, was utterly barbarous in temperament and behavior. He was set upon exterminating the entire English race in Britain, and spared neither women nor innocent children, putting them all to horrible deaths with ruthless savagery, and continuously ravaging their whole country. He had no respect for the newly established religion of Christ. Indeed even in our own days the Britons pay no respect for the faith and religion of the English and have no more dealings with them than with the heathen. The head of King Edwin was carried to York and subsequently placed in the church of the blessed Apostle Peter, which he had begun to build, but which his successor Oswald completed, as I have related above. It rested in the porch dedicated to the holy Pope Gregory, from whose disciples he had received the Word of life.
As a result of this disaster, the affairs of the Northumbrians were in such utter disorder that flight offered the sole hope of safety. Paulinus took Queen Ethelberga, whom he had previously accompanied to the province, and returned by sea to Kent, where he was most honorably received by Archbishop Honorius and King Eadbald.(pp.140-141)
Book Three recounts how the above “disaster” was offset by the return of the Christian King Oswald in 633-4, who served only eight years before he was killed in battle to be succeeded by Oswy.
In the Chapter 1 of this Book, we see the dire developments which evolved after the immediate successors of King Edwin “abandoned their people’s Faith and lose their kingdom”:
After Edwin’s death in battle, the kingdom of Deira, to which his family belonged and where he began his reign, devolved upon Osric, son of Edwin’s uncle Elfric, who had been baptized into the Christian Faith by Paulinus. But the kingdom of Bernicia –for the kingdom of the Northumbrians had anciently been divided into these two provinces—fell to Eanfrid, son of Ethelfrid, who claimed descent from, the royal family of that province.
During the whole of Edwin’s reign the sons of Ehelfrid, his predecessor, together with many young nobles lived in exile among the Irish or Picts and were there instructed in the teachings of the Irish Church and received the grace of Baptism. But on the death of their enemy Edwin, they received permission to return to their own land, and Eanfrid, as eldest son, inherited the crown of Bernicia. As soon as they had obtained control of their earthly kingdoms, however, both the kings apostatized from the faith of the kingdom of heaven which they had accepted, and reverted to the corruption and damnation of their former idolatry.
Not long afterwards they were justly punished by meeting their death at the hands of the godless Cadwalla, king of the Britons. First Osric next summer was rashly besieging him in a strong city when Cadwalla, making a sudden sally with his entire force, caught him off his guard and destroyed him with his whole army. After this, for a full year, Cadwalla ruled the Northumbrian provinces, not as a victorious king but as a savage tyrant, ravaging them with ghastly slaughter until at length he also destroyed Eanfrid, who had unwisely visited him to negotiate peace accompanied only by twelve picked soldiers. This year remains accursed and hateful to all good men, not only on account of the apostasy of the English kings, by which they divested themselves of the sacraments of the Faith, but also because of the savage tyranny of the British king. Hence all those calculating the reigns of kings have agreed to expunge the memory of these apostate kings and to assign this year to the reign of their successor King Oswald, a man beloved of God. This king, after the death of his brother Eanfrid, mustered an army small in numbers but strong in the faith of Christ; and despite Cadwalla’s vast forces, which he boasted of as irresistible the infamous British leader was killed at a place known by the English as Denisesburn, that is, the Brook of Denis.(pp.143-144)
In Chapter 6, Bede describes “the wonderful devotion and piety” of King Oswald. The church grew stronger, especially after disparate elements were reconciled at Whiby, and the die-hard Irish opposition left Northumbria.
Through King Oswald’s diplomacy the provinces of Deira and Bernicia, formerly hostile to each other, were peacefully united and became one people. Oswald was nephew to King Edwin by his sister Acha; and it is fitting that so great a predecessor should have had so worthy a man of his own blood to maintain his religion and his throne.(p.152-153)
Book Four opens with the consecration of Theodore as Archbishop of Canterbury, which took place in Rome in 664. During this episcopate the Church of England comes of age and is more closely untied to the rest of the Church of Europe. A series of Christian miracles is described which strengthen the church, and the last pagan kingdom, Sussex, is evangelized by Wilfrid.
In Chapter 30, we are provided with the description of another holy miracle: “After eleven years in the grave, Cuthbert’s body is found incorrupt; His successor departs this life soon afterwards (A.D. 698).”
Not long afterwards, God’s beloved Bishop Eadbert was attacked by an illness that rapidly grew more serious, and in a short time he departed to our Lord on the sixth of May. Whereupon the brethren laid his body in the tomb of the blessed Father Cuthbert, and above it they placed the coffin containing the uncorrupt body of the Father. The miracles of healing that that place from time to time at the tomb bear witness to the holiness of them both. I have recorded some instances in my book of his life. And in this present history I have included further examples that have recently come to my knowledge.(pp.262-263)
Book Five, the final book of this work, contains 24 chapters. Here the theme is the important missionary works stemming from Northumbia and its influence of the rest of England, especially winning the acceptance of Roman Easter, which marked “the end of disunity.”
In the final chapter of the final book, Bede offers a chronological summary of his entire history:
As an aid to memory, I have thought it helpful to make a concise summary of events already dealt with at greater length.
In the sixtieth year before the Incarnation of our lord, Gaius Julius Cesar was the first of the Romans to make war on Britain and was victorious, but was unable to hold the kingdom.
In the year of our Lord 46, Claudius was the second of the Romans, to come to Britain and received the surrender of the greater part of the island. He also added the Isles of Orkney to the Roman Empire;
In the year of our Lord 167, Eleutherus became Bishop of Rome, and ruled the Church most gloriously for fifteen years. Lucius, a king of Britain, sent him a letter asking to be made a Christian, and obtained his request.
In the year of our Lord 189, Severus became Emperor and reigned seventeen years. He fortified Britain with an earthwork stretching form sea to sea.
In the year 381, Maximus became Emperor while in Britain. He crossed into Gaul and killed Gratian.
In the year 409, Rome was taken by (the Goths, and thenceforward Romn rule bame to an end in Britain.
In the year 430, Pope Celestine sent Palladius to be the first bishop to the Christian Irish.
In the year 449, Marcian became co-Emperor with Valentinian. He reigned seven years, during which time the English came to Britain at the invitation of the Britons.
In the year 538, an eclipse of the sun occurred on the twentieth of June, and the stars appeared for nearly half an hour after the hour of Terce.
In the year 547, Ida began his reign, which lasted for twelve years; From him the royal family of the Northumbrians derives its origin.
In the year 565, the priest Columba came into Britain from the land of the Irish to teach the Picts, and built a monastery on the Isle of Iona.
In the year 596, Pope Gregory sent Augustine and his monks to Britain to preach the word of God to the English people.
In the year 597, these teachers arrived in Britain. This was about one hundred and fifty years after the coming of the English to Britain.
In the year 601, Pope Gregory sent the pallium to Britain for Augustine, who had already been made a bishop. He also sent several ministers of the word, including Paulinus.
In the year 603, Pope Gregory died.
Ini the year 606, King Ethelbert of Kent died.
In the year 625, Archbishop Justus consecrated Paulinus as Bishop of the Northumbrians.
In the year 626, Eanfled , daughter of King Edwin, was baptized on Whit Saturday with twelve others.
In the year 627, King Edwin and his people were baptized on Easter Day.
In the year 633, King Edwin was killed, and Paulinus retired to Kent.
In the year 640, King Eadbald of Kent died.
In the year 642, King Oswald was killed.
In the year 644, Paulinus, first Bishop of York and later Bishop of Rochester, departed to our Lord.
In the year 651, King Oswin was killed, and Bishop Aidan died.
In the year 653, The Middle Angles under Peada their prince accepted the mysteries of the Faith.

In the year 664, an eclipse occurred. King Earconbert of Kent died, and Bishop Colman returned to his own land with the Irish. A plague came. Chad and Wilfrid were consecrated Bishops of the Northumbrians.

In the year 680, a synod was held in the plain of Hatfield under the presidency of Archbishop Theodore to affirm the Catholic Faith: John, an abbot from Rome, attended. Abbess Hilda died at Streanaeshalch.
In the year 685, Egfrid, King of the Northumbrians, was killed. King Hlothere of Kent died.
In the year 688, Cadwalla, King of the West Saxons, left Britain for Rome.
In the year 690, Archbishop Theodore died.
In the year 697, Queen Osthryd was killed by her own people, the Mercian chieftains.

In the year709, Coenred, King of the Mercians, after a reign of five years, went to Rome.
In the year 711, the ealdorman Bertfrid fought against the Picts.
In the year716, Osred, King of the Northumbrians, was killed, and Ceolred, King of the Mercians, died. The man of God Egbert converted the monks of Iona to the Catholic Easter and the canonical tonsure.
In the year 725, king Wictred of Kent died.
In the year 729, comets appeared : the holy Egbert departed this life: Osric died.
In the year 731, Archbishop Bertwald died. In the same year, the fifteenth of the reign of King Ethelbald of the Mercians, Tatwin was consecrated ninth Archbishop of Canterbury.(pp.325-328)
Bede wrote in vernacular Latin and dedicated this work to Ceolwulf, the King of Northumbria. According to introductory notes by D.H. Farmer, “Bede regarded himself primarily as a biblical commentator:”
The number and size of these works far exceed his others. His sermons also reveal him as a contemplative scholar whose world was that of the mysteries of the Christian faith. Not being a speculative genius like Augustine or Aquinas, he might have been thought of (in patristic terms) as one who ruminated like an ox rather than one who soared like the eagle. His commentaries on nearly every book of the Bible have seemed unoriginal and derivative to many, but they at least provided admirable digests of patristic commentary to preachers in England and overseas in an age when books were very scarce and very expensive. Moreover Bede’s use and skilful editing of his sources often makes his works more valuable than at first appears.
Most readers now think of Bede primarily as a historian. His History was the work of his mature years, completed when he was aged about sixty. His earlier works of chronology, computistics and hagiography prepared him, in different ways, for his masterpiece. (p.21)
Another 20th-century critic of this medieval historian, Sir Frank Stenton, wrote,
The essential quality of Bede’s History carries it into the small class of books which transcend all but the most fundamental conditions of time and place . . . the quality which makes his work great is not his scholarship nor the faculty of narrative which Bede shared with many contemporaries, but his astonishing power of co-coordinating the fragments of information which came to him through tradition, the relation of friends;, or documentary evidence. In an age when little was attempted beyond the registration of fact, he had reached the conception of history.(p.22)
Scholars have continued to discover a wider context of influences on the writing of Bede’s History.
At first sight Bede had no models: his was a pioneering work without any exact precedent. In fact he owed much to earlier historians. The most important of these was Eusebius, the fourth(century Bishop of Caesarea, whose Ecclesiastical History recounted the story of the Christian Church from Pentecost until his own times: how it spread through the Roman Empire in spite of numerous persecutions, how the bishops succeeded one another and how they resisted the evil influence of heretics. Bede, who knew Eusebius in Rufinus’ Latin translation, tried to do for the Church in Anglo-Saxon England what Eusebius had done for the Church as a whole. For each the history of the Church was simply a development of the story of the Acts of the Apostles. Just as Christ’s apostles had worked, preached and suffered to establish the Church in obedience to Christ, so did their successors in whatever time or place. Bede wrote his commentary on Acts during Part of the time when he was also writing the History. If persecution and martyrdom were lacking in the account of the Christianization of England, there was no lack of signs or miracles. Both Eusebius and Bede expected these to accompany the pioneering spread of the Gospel. Contrary to previous opinions, it is clear that both sophisticated Romans and uncultured barbarians expected religion to be accompanied by miracles of one kind or another.

Other earlier historians to whom he owed a debt include Gregory of Tours, whose History of the Franks is very different, but from it Bede took the idea of a final autobiographical survey. The task which Bede set himself was extraordinarily difficult. Pre-Christian Anglo-Saxon society had virtually no documents and no books. Laws and property transactions were promulgated by the king’s word. There was however a lively oral tradition of poetry. Even after the coming of Christianity, written records of all kinds were very few. Bede made the best of what there was: papal letters, Episcopal lists, conciliar documents as well as the sources mentioned above. It was Bede’s skill which made coherent a number of disparate and scrappy elements.
The main theme of the History was the progression from diversity to unity. This was an idea worked out by Gregory the Great, whom Bede admired so much both as a teacher and as the apostle of the English. Both aspects are incorporated in his admirable panegyric …. Bede began his work with a geographical and racial survey of Britain…. He saw Christianity as the unifying force which brought together Picts, Irish, Angles, Saxons, Jutes and, hopefully, Britons. A principal sign of this unity was the common celebration by all on the same day of the principal Christian mystery, that of the passion and Resurrection of Christ. That was why any deviation or schism caused by rival calculations of Easer was so unacceptable. Bede’s concern, almost obsession, with this issue shows itself repeatedly in his judgments on Welsh and Irish Christians, even St Aidan …. (p.27)
According to these introductory notes, Bede demonstrated throughout his entire life a loyalty to the mission of the Roman Empire, to bring civilization to western Europe through political and spiritual unification. One of the divisive issues which prevented “perfect unification” of the western Catholic Church was the dispute over the exact calendar dates of Crucifixion and Easter. Bede consistently advocated the dates dictated by papal authority from Rome; but not all the northern churches agreed.
Bede’s ambivalent attitude to Celtic Christians has often been noted. He admired the Irish bishops and abbots, whom he regarded as personifying the simplicity and poverty that had apparently become rare by 731; His repeated reservations about them was their attachment to an Easter calculation which seemed to him wrong.

His personal sympathy for Irish apostles in Northumbria should be compared with his deeper loyalty to Rome. For him Gregory, rather than either Augustine or Aidan, was the apostle of the English…; his own abbots, Benedict Biscop and Ceolfrith, had repeatedly visited Rome and brought back books, relics and paintings; Bede also attested with approval to the growing practice of pilgrimage to Rome by kings, bishops, monks and others …. Bede was an outstanding writer in Latin and a staunch supporter of the ‘Roman’ calculation of Easter.

…Roman order and seriousness deeply appealed to Bede, and, like most of his scholarly contemporaries, he was conscious of the duty to preserve for posterity all that was best in the old world. At the outer edge of civilization as it was then known, and himself a member of a barbarian race, Bede brought to his own primitive age much of what was best in the old world of Roman culture, both classical and Christian. The very existence of his (book, History) is one indication of how well he had succeeded.(pp.30-31)
Of particular interest is the unusually long chapter 27 of Book One (more than 12 pages), where Bede, the Anglo-Saxon convert to Christianity, reproduces the exchange between Pope Gregory (c.540-604) and the newly consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury, the Benedictine monk Augustine (?-604), who is informing him of what had been achieved in England since his arrival from Rome during Easter of the year 597. Augustine was accompanied to England by some 40 fellow Benedictine monks; all of whom were charged by Pope Gregory the Great with the mission of bringing Roman Christianity to the pagan Anglo-Saxons. It was around 600 that Augustine, who had become the first ordained Bishop of Canterbury, wrote a series of questions to the Pope in Rome, asking his advice on technical matters concerning church dogma and what amounts to procedures for more efficiently propagandizing Roman Catholic doctrine among these pagans in England. This long exchange includes Pope Gregory’s ideological advice in response to Augustine’s nine questions and contains a fascinating description of how the early medieval church tried to affect the internalization of the misplaced concreteness of religious concepts in the heads of a subjugated population so as to concretize the internalization of inconvenient ideas, such as social hierarchy, and make it acceptable as the destiny of all, which of course was dictated by the a priories held by the defenders of the social status quo and their monotheistic “Great Chain of Being” dogmatic fatalism:
Meanwhile God’s servant Augustine visited Arles and, in accordance with the Holy Father Gregory’s directions, was consecrated archbishop of the English nation by Etherius, archbishop of that city. On his return to Britain, he sent the priest Laurence and the monk Peter to Rome to inform the blessed Pope Gregory that the English had accepted the Faith of Christ, and that he himself had been concentrated bishop. At the same time, he sought advice on certain current problems. The Pope answered his enquiries without delay, and I have thought it proper to record these replies in my history.
I. The first question of Augustine, Bishop of the Church of Canterbury: What is to be the
relation between the bishop and his clergy? And how are the offerings made by the faithful at the altar to be apportioned? And what are the functions of a bishop in his church?
Gregory, Pope of the City of Rome, replies: Holy Scripture, with which you are certainly well acquainted, offers us guidance in this matter, and in particular the letters of blessed Paul to Timothy, in which he carefully instructs him on a bishop’s duties in the house of God. But it is the custom of the Apostolic See to instruct all newly consecrated bishops that all money received is to be allocated under four heads: one for the bishop and his household, for hospitality and other commitments; another for the clergy; a third for the poor; and a fourth for upkeep of churches. In your case, my brother, having been trained under monastic rule, you should not live apart from your clergy in the church of the English, which by God’s help has lately been brought to the Faith. You are therefore to follow the way of life practiced by our forefathers of the primitive Church, among whom none said that anything which he possessed was his own, but they had all things common. If there are any clerics who have not received Sacred Orders and who cannot accept a life of continence, let them marry and receive their stipends outside the common fund; for it is written of the fathers whom we have mentioned, that ‘distribution was made unto every man according as he had need’. So give consideration to the provision of the stipends, and see that they observe the Church’s’ discipline and live orderly, attend to the singing of the Psalter, and by God’s help preserve themselves in thought, word, and deed from everything unlawful. But to those who live as a Community there should be no need for us to mention allocating portions, exercising hospitality, and showing mercy. Everything that can be spared is to be devoted to holy and religious purpose, as the Lord and Master of all bids; ‘Give alms of such things as ye have; and behold, all things are clean unto you.’
II. Augustine’s second question; Since we hold the same Faith, does the method of
saying Mass differ in the holy Roman Church and Churches of Gaul?
Pope Gregory’s reply: My brother, you are familiar with the usage of the Roman Church, in which you were brought u. But if you found customs, whether in the Church of Rome or any other that may be more acceptable to God, I wish you to make a careful selection of them, and teach the Church of the English, which is still young in the Faith, whatever you have been able to learn with profit from the various Churches. For things should not be loved for the sake of places, but places for the sake of good things. Therefore select from each of the Churches whatever things are devout, religious, and right; and when you have bound them, as it were, into a sheaf, let the minds of the English grow accustomed to it.
III. Augustine’s third question: What punishment should be awarded to those who rob
churches?
Pope Gregory’s reply: The punishment must depend on the circumstances of the offender. For some commit theft although they have means of subsistence, and others out of poverty; Some, therefore, should be punished by fines, others by beating; some severely, and others more leniently. But when the punishment has to be severe, let it be administered in charity, not in anger; for the purpose of such correction is to save the wicked from hell-fire. We must maintain discipline among the faithful as good fathers among their children, whom they appear to treat harshly. So charity must always be our motive and indicate the means of correction, so that we may do nothing unreasonable . You may add that thieves are to restore whatever they have taken from churches, but God forbid that the Church should recover with interest any worldly goods she may lose, or seek any gain for, these empty things.
IV. Augustine’s fourth question: Is it permissible for two brothers to marry two sisters,
provided there be no blood ties between the families?
Pope Gregory’s reply: This is quite permissible. There is nothing in holy Scripture that seems to forbid it.
V. Augustine’s fifth question: To what degree may the faithful marry with their kindred?
And is it lawful for a man to marry his step-mother or sister-in-law?
Pope Gregory’s reply: an earthly law of the Roman state permits first-cousins to marry. But experience shows that such unions do not result in children, and sacred law forbids a man to ‘uncover their nakedness of his kindred’. Necessity therefore forbids a closer marriage than that between the third or fourth generation, while the second generation, as we have said, should wholly abstain from marriage. But to wed one’s step-mother is a grave sin, for the Law says: ‘Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father.’ Now the son cannot uncover the nakedness of his father; but since it says, ‘They shall be one flesh’, whosoever presumes to wed his step-mother, who was one flesh with his father , thereby commit this offense. It is also forbidden to marry a sister-in-law, since by a former union she has become one with his own brother. It was for denouncing this sin that John the Baptist was beheaded and met his holy martyrdom. For John was not ordered to deny Christ, but was in fact put to death as a confessor of Christ. For since our Lord Jesus Christ said: ‘I am the Truth’, John shed his blood for Christ in that he gave his life for the truth.
But since there are many among the English who, while they were still heathen, are said to have contracted these unlawful marriages, when they accept the Faith they are to be instructed that this is a grave offence and that they must abstain from it. Warn them of the terrible judgment of god lest for their bodily desires they incur the pains of eternal punishment. Nevertheless, they are not on that account to be deprived of the Communion for sins committed unknowingly before they received the purification of Baptism. For in these days the Church corrects some things strictly, and allows others out of leniency; others again she deliberately glosses over and tolerates and by so doing often succeeds in checking an evil of which she disapproves. But all who come to the Faith are to be warned against doing these things, and should any subsequently be guilty of them, they are to be forbidden to receive the Communion of the Body and Blood of our Lord. For while these offenses may to some extent be condoned in those who acted in ignorance, they must be severely punished in those who presume to sin knowingly.
VI. Augustine’s sixth question. If a long journey is involved, so that bishops cannot easily
assemble, is it permissible for a bishop to be consecrated without other bishops being
present?
Pope Gregory’s reply: In the church of the English where as yet you are the only bishop, you cannot do otherwise than consecrate a bishop without other bishops being present. For when do bishops from Gaul pay a visit, so that they can be present as witnesses to the consecration? It is our wish, brother, that you should so establish bishops that they are not unnecessarily far apart: so that at a bishop’s consecration other pastors, whose presence is certainly desirable, may be readily summoned. Therefore, when in God’s good time bishops are appointed in various places at no great distance from one another, no consecration is to take place except in the presence of three or four bishops. For in spiritual matters we may often with advantage follow the customs of the world, so that we may arrange things carefully and wisely. When a wedding is celebrated, married folk are invited, so that those who have already travelled some way on the path of marriage may share the joy of the new couple. So, at this spiritual consecration, when a man is joined to God in the sacred ministry, why should not those be invited who will take pleasure in the elevation of the new bishop, or offer their prays to God for his protection?
VII. Augustine’s seventh question: What are to be our relations with the bishops of Gaul and Britain?
Pope Gregory’s reply : We give you no authority over the bishops of Gaul, for since the time of my early predecessors the Bishop of Arles has received the pallium, and his authority is to be in no way impaired; If, therefore, you have occasion to cross over into the province of Gaul, you are to consult with the Bishop of Arles how to correct any faults among the bishops; and should he be remiss in administering discipline, inspire him with your own zeal. We have already written to him, requesting him –to offer you every assistance whenever you visit Gaul and to ensure that his bishops observe no customs contrary to the laws of God our Maker. Although we give you no authority over the bishops of Gaul, you should nevertheless advise, encourage and show them a good example. Recall the minds of any wrong-doers to pursuit of holiness, for it is written in the Law: ‘When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbor, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hands; but thou shall not move a sickle into thy neighbor’s standing corn.’ Similarly, you may not use the sickle of authority in the field entrusted to another man, but use your good influence to separate the Lord’s wheat from the chaff of their sins, and by your teaching and persuasion assimilate them into the body of the Church. But no official action is to be (taken without the authority of the Bishop of Arles, so that the long-established institutions of our fathers may not fall into disuse. All the Bishops of Britain, however, we commit to your charge. Use your authority to instruct the unlearned, to strengthen the weak, and correct the misguided.
VIII. Augustine’s eighth question. May an expectant mother be baptized? How soon after child-birth may a child be baptized if in danger of death? How soon after child-birth may a husband have relations with his wife? And may a woman properly enter church at the time of menstruation? And may she receive Communion at these times? And may a man enter church after relations with his wife before he has washed? Or receive the sacred mystery of Communion? These uncouth English people require guidance on all these matters.
Pope Gregory’s reply: I have no doubt, my brother, that questions such as these have arisen, and I think I have already answered you; but doubtless you desire my support for your statements and rulings. Why should not an expectant mother be baptized? –the fruitfulness of the flesh is no offence in the sight of Almighty God. For when our first parents sinned in the Garden, they justly forfeited God’s gift of immortality. But although God deprived man of immortality for his sin, he did not destroy the human race on that account, but of his merciful goodness left man his ability to continue the race. On what grounds, then, can Almighty God’s free gift to man be excluded from the grace of Holy Baptism? For it would be foolish to suppose that his gift of grace is contrary to the sacred mystery by which all guilt is washed away.
As to the interval that mush elapse after childbirth before a woman may enter church, you are familiar with the Old Testament rule : that is, for a male child thirty-three days and for a female, sixty-six. But this is to be understood as an allegory, for were a women to enter church and return thanks in the very hour of her delivery, she would do nothing wrong. The fault lies in the bodily pleasure, not in the pain; the pleasure is in the bodily union, the pain is in the birth, so that Eve, the mother of us all, was told: ‘In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.’ If, then, we forbid a woman who is delivered of a child to enter church, we make this penalty into a sin. There is no obstacle to the Baptism either of a woman who had been delivered, or of a newborn babe, even if it is administered to her in the very hour of her delivery, or to the child at the hour of its birth, provided that there be danger of death. For as the grace of this sacred mystery is to be offered with great deliberation to the living and conscious, so is it to be administer without delay to the dying; for if we wait to offer them this mystery of redemption, it may be too late to find the one to be redeemed.
A man should not approach his wife until her child is weaned. But a bad custom has arisen in the behavior of married people that women distain to suckle their own children. So those who observe this bad custom of giving their children to others to nurse must not approach their husbands until the time of their purification has elapsed. For even apart from childbirth, women are forbidden to do so during their monthly courses, and the Old Law prescribed death for any man who approached a woman during this time. But a women should not be forbidden to enter the church during these times; for the workings of nature cannot be considered culpable, and it is not just that she should be refused admittance, since her condition is beyond her control. We know that the woman who suffered an issue of blood, humbly approaching behind our Lord, touched the hem of his robe and was at once healed of her sickness. If, therefore, this woman was right to touch our Lord’s robe, why may not one who suffers nature’s courses be permitted to enter the church of God? And if it is objected that the woman in the Gospels was compelled by disease while these latter are bound by custom, hen remember, my brother, that everything that we suffer in this moral body through the infirmity of its nature is justly ordained by God since the Fall of man. For hunger, thirst, heat, cold, and weariness originate in this infirmity of our nature; and our search for food against hunger, drink against thirst, coolness against heat, clothing against cold, and rest against weariness is only our attempt to obtain some remedy in our weakness. In this sense the menstrual flow in a woman is an illness. So, if it was a laudable presumption in the woman who, in her disease, touched our Lord’s robe, why may not the same concession be granted to all women who endure the weakness of their nature?
A woman, therefore, should not be forbidden to receive the mystery of Communion at these times. If any out of a deep sense of reverence do not presume to do so, this is commendable, but if they do so, they do nothing blameworthy. Sincere people often acknowledge their faults even when there is no actual fault. For instance, eating when we are hungry is no fault, but being hungry originates in Adam’s sin; similarly, the monthly courses of women are not fault, because nature causes them. But the defilement of our nature is apparent even when we have no deliberate intention to do evil, and this defilement springs from sin; so may we recognize the judgment that our sin has brought on us. And so may man, who sinned willingly, bear the punishment of his sin unwillingly; Therefore, when women after due consideration do not presume to approach the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord during their courses, they are to be commended. But if they are moved by devout love of this holy mystery to receive it as pious custom suggests, they are not to be discouraged. For while the Old Testament makes outward observances important, the New Testament does not regard these things so highly as the inward disposition, which is the sole true criterion for allotting punishment. For instance, the Law forbids the eating of many things as unclean, but in the Gospel our Lord says: ‘Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.’ He also said: ‘Out of the mouth proceed evils thoughts.’ Here Almighty God clearly shows us that evil actions spring from the root of evil thoughts. Similarly, Saint Paul says; ‘Unto the pure all things are pure; but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure.’ And later, he indicates the cause of this corruption, adding: ‘For even their mind and conscience is defiled.’ If, therefore, no food is unclean to one of a pure mind, how can a woman who endures the laws of nature with a pure mind be considered impure?
It is not fitting that a man who has approached his wife should enter church before he has washed, nor is he to enter at once, though washed. The ancient Law prescribed that a
man in such cases should wash, and forbade him to enter a holy place before sunset. But this may be understood spiritually; for when a man’s mind is attracted to those
pleasures by lawless desire, he should not regard himself as fitted to join in Christian worship until these heated desires cool in the mind, and he has ceased to labor under
wrongful passions. And although various nations have different views on this matter and observe different customs, it was always the ancient Roman usage for such a man to
seek purification and out of reverenceto refrain awhile from entering a holy place. In making this observation, we do not condemn marriage itself, but since lawful intercourse
must be accompanied by bodily desire, it is fitting to refrain from entering a holy place, since this desire itself is not blameless. For David, who said: ‘Behold, I was shapen in
iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me’, was not himself born of any illicit union, but in lawful wedlock. But knowing himself to have been conceived in
inquity, he grieved that he had been born in sin, like a tree bearing in its branches the sap of evil drawn up from its roots. In saying this, he does not term the bodily union of
married people iniquity, but the desire of such union. For there are many things that are lawful and legitimate, and yet in the doing of them we are to some extentcontaminated.
For example, we often correct fault under stress of anger and thereby disturb our peace of mind; and thought we are right to do so it is not good that we should lose our peace
of mind in the process. He who said: ‘Mine eye is troubled because of anger’ had been roused by the crimes of evil men, and because only a quiet mind can rest in the light of
ontemplation, he regretted that his eye was troubled by anger, so that he was disquieted and prevented from contemplating heavenly things so long as he was istracted by
indignation at the wicked doings of men. So while anger against evil is commendable, it is harmful to a man because in being disturbed by it he is conscious of some guilt.
Lawful intercourse should be for the procreation of offspring, and not for mere pleasure; to obtain children, and not to satisfy lust. But if any man is not moved by a desire for
pleasure, but only by a desire for children, he is to be left to his own judgment either as to entering church or to receiving the Communion of the Body and Blood of our Lord;
for we have to right to debar one who does not yield to the fires of temptation. But when lust takes the place of desire for children, the mere act of union becomes something
that the pair have cause to regret; and although the holy teachings give them permission, yet this carries a warning with it. For when the Apostle Paul said: ‘If they cannot
contain, let them marry,’ he at once added, ‘I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.’ This concession makes it lawful, yet not good; so when he spoke of
permission, he indicted that it was not blameless.
It should be carefully considered that, when God was about to speak to the people on Mount Sinai, he first ordered them to abstain from women. And if such a degree of bodily purity was required in those who were to hear the word of God when he spoke to men through a subject creature, how much the more should women preserve themselves in purity of body when about to receive the Body of Almighty God himself, lest they be overwhelmed by the very greatness of this inestimable mystery? For his reason the priest instructed David that, if his men were clean in this respect, they might be given the showbread, which would have been entirely forbidden had not David first certified that they had kept themselves from women. Similarly the man who had cleansed himself with water after intercourse with his wife is allowed to approach the mystery of Holy Communion, since he may enter church in accordance with this decision.
IX. Augustine’s ninth question; May a man receive communion after a sexual illusion in a dream; or, if a priest, may he celebrate the holy mysteries?
Pope Gregory’s reply: The Testament of the Old Law, as I have already mentioned, speaks of such a man as unclean and does not permit him to enter church until evening and after purification. But this is to be understood spiritually in another sense; for a man may be under a delusion and tempted to impurity in a dream, because, having yielded to temptation, he is defiled by real mental imaginings. Then he must cleanse himself with water, thus washing away his sinful thoughts with tears. And, unless the fire of temptation dies earlier, he should regard himself as unclean until evening. But we should carefully examine the origins of such illusions in the mind of a sleeper, for sometimes they arise from over-eating, sometimes form excess or lack of bodily vigor, and sometimes from impure thoughts. When such illusion occurs through excess or lack of bodily vigor, it need not be feared, because it is to be deplored rather as something the mind has unwittingly suffered than as something it has done. But when a greedy appetite runs riot and overloads the repositories of the bodily fluids, the mind is to blame, although not to the extent that a man must be forbidden to receive the holy mystery, or to say mass when a feast-day requires it, or when necessity demands that he administer the sacrament in the absence of another priest. But if there are others who can perform this ministry, then this illusion caused by greed need not debar a man from receiving the holy mystery unless the mind of the sleeper has been excited by impure thought; but I think that humility should move him to refrain from offering the holy mysteries under these circumstances. For there are some who are not mentally disturbed by impure thoughts, although subject to these illusions. In these things there is just one thing that shows that the mind is not innocent even in its own judgment; although it remembers nothing that occurs during sleep, yet it does remember its greedy appetites. But if the sleeper’s illusion springs from indecent thoughts when awake, his guilt stands clear in his mind and he recognized the source of his sin, because he has unconsciously experienced what has been in his conscious thoughts. But the question arises whether an evil thought merely suggests itself to a man, or whether he proceeds to take pleaser in it, or, worse still, to assent to it. For all sin is consummated in three ways, that is, by suggestion, pleasure, and consent. Suggestion comes though the devil, pleasure through the flesh, and consent through the will. The Serpent suggests the first sin, and Eve, as flesh, took physical pleasure in it, while Adam, as spirit, consented; and great discernment is needed if the mind, in judging itself, is to distinguish between suggestion and pleasure, and between pleasure and consent. For when the Evil Sprit suggests a sin, no sin is committed unless the flesh takes pleasure in it; but when the flesh begins to take pleasure, then sin is born; and if deliberate consent is given, sin is complete. The seed of sin, therefore, is in suggestion, its growth in pleasure, and its completion in consent. It often happens, however, that what the Evil Spirit sows in the mind and the flesh anticipates with pleasure, the soul rejects. And although the body cannot experience pleasure without the mind, yet the mind, in contending against the desires of the body, is to some extent unwillingly chained to them, having to oppose them for conscience sake, and strongly regretting its bondage to bodily desires. It was for this reason that Paul, that great soldier in God’s army, confessed with sorrow: ‘I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which ids my members.’ Now if he was a captive he fought but little; yet her did fight. So he was both captive and also fighting with the law of mind, to which the law of body is opposed. And if he fought thus, he was no captive. So one may say that a man is both captive and free; free through the law of right which he loves, and captive through the law of bodily pleasure, of which he is an unwilling victim.(pp.77-89)

“When War Was Reintroduced in Europe: Dissolution of NATO”

We, the participants of the Conference held on March 21st 2025 at the Serbian Military Club, gathered to mark the 26th anniversary of the beginning of NATO aggression against Serbia (the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia), titled “When War Was Reintroduced in Europe”, have adopted this:
Statement.
We stand up for:
—A broader approach to the culture of remembrance. The respect owed to the victims fallen while defending the country and freedom from NATO aggression in 1999 as well as from other aggressions, should be held and felt in life, education, science, and art. Whatever we do, create curricula, entrust the writing of textbooks, choose strategic partners, assign economic interests, sign long-term agreements, just like when we defend Kosovo and Metohija and the Republic Srpska – we have to be deeply aware of our history and the victims fallen for the freedom and perseverance.
—Dissolution of NATO, which has, by virtue of its aggression against our country, formally turned from a defensive into an aggressive alliance of the unipolar world order and the neoliberal corporate system. NATO’s policy of expansion to the East intensified in 1999 and brought the world to the brink of nuclear doomsday. Presently, more and more governments of member states realize that NATO is but a relic of the Cold War that has no place in the multipolar world order.
—Closure of US military Camp Bondsteel and all foreign camps located in the Balkans, in Europe, and across the world. Camp Bondsteel is an illegal military base, just as are illegal that NATO aggression, the subsequent unilateral secession and its recognition under US and EU pressure. This base was erected on a part of the Serbian territory that has been temporarily placed under the mandate of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, but without the consent of either Serbia or the United Nations.
—Continuation and reinforcement of diplomatic activities aimed at de-recognition.
—Filing request for compensation for war damages. NATO has severely violated the basic principles of international law, the UN Charter, the ultimate authority of the UN Security Council, the OSCE Helsinki Final Act (1975) and the Paris Charter and, as such, is liable to compensate for the inflicted damage. Such request for compensation is both a right and a moral duty of Serbia towards the victims of the aggression.
—Furtherance of activities aimed at determining the consequences of the use of weapons filled with depleted uranium and other means of mass destruction. Relevant decisions made by the Assembly and the Government of Serbia need to be implemented, and the publicly given promises need to be honored.
—Conservation, adaptation, and perseveration of the buildings of the Ministry of Defense and of the Armed Forces General Staff as both cultural monuments and a testimony of a great suffering, that are of lasting importance for the self-esteem and morale of the nation, and for the patriotic upbringing of the generations to come. Such a role and significance of those edifices are beyond comparison with any material or financial gains.
—Establishment of the Center for Documentation and Studying of NATO Aggression as a turning point in the global affairs. As a victim of the aggression and the first war to be waged on the European soil after WWII, Serbia deserves this. The organizers of this Conference stand ready to provide a concept for it.
—Compiling a list of civilian victims of NATO aggression. We must avoid critics of future generations for a failure that still can be rectified. This is a part of the culture of remembrance, too.
—Adjusting our domestic and foreign policies in line with new realities in Europe and the world. Tectonic changes in the European and global environments require in-depth adjustments planning, and vision, for a more thorough protection of long-term national and state interests.
—Condemnation, in strongest terms, of any interference in Serbia’s internal affairs and foreign policy.
—Preservation of Serbia’s natural, mineral, and other resources, including strategic minerals, precious metals, agricultural land, waters, and forests. The prolonged stagnation and economic crisis across Europe is not the time for sellout or concessions, but rather the wakeup call for greater care of, and reliance on, own resources, and for a bolder diversification of economic-technological and investment cooperation.

“Sir Henry Kissinger: Midwife to New Babylon. History: ‘Greater Israel’ as a British Imperial Project”

The moment Kissinger’s last breath left his corpse, media commentators lost no time running out the gates, either singing songs of slavish praise about the “great liberal statesman” on one hand or composing devastating critiques of the bloodstained trail of tears Kissinger’s legacy left on the world.
I was beginning to think that nothing new or relevant could be said about the life of Sir Kissinger (he was made a Knight of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1995). But with the smell of Messianic fanaticism weighing heavily in the air of Jerusalem these days, I realized I was quite mistaken. In 2012, Kissinger said something quite curious that very few people have taken seriously, yet his statement opens the door to an important lesson about world history—and Kissinger’s peculiar life gives us a window into it.
Speaking on Israel’s future in 2012, Kissinger sent shockwaves of confusion through the world when he said, “in 10 years, there will be no more Israel.”
Why would Kissinger, a man who devoted such a major part of his life to the cause of Zionism, believe with certainty that Israel would no longer exist in 10 years? What was supposed to happen under a Hillary Clinton regime that would have resulted in Kissinger’s prediction unfolding in 2022?
Did Kissinger not want the Middle East stability he so often spoke so highly of?
His apparent dual support for Zionist empowerment on one hand and his belief in the impending destruction of Israel on the other is not a glitch in the matrix nor a contradiction in Sir Kissinger’s thinking. Rather, it represents two sides of one bloody program that ultimately involves purging the Holy Land of both Jews and Arabs.
Since Kissinger’s 2012 opinion provided such an important, ironic crack in the machinery of oligarchism, I’d like to take a moment to invite you to join me as we peek through this crack into a story that may take us as far back as Babylon…
‘Greater Israel’ as a British Imperial Project
In 1914, the man who later became Israel’s first president, Chaim Weizman, stated:
“Should Palestine fall within the British sphere of influence, and should Britain encourage a Jewish settlement there, as a British dependency, we could have in 20 to 30 years a million Jews there-perhaps more; they would. . . form a very effective guard for the Suez/Canal.”
These words indicated a deeply underappreciated value that leading Jewish Zionists had for the British empire’s plans for global control over a century ago; these Zionists believed the empire could further their own plans for a Jewish state.
Lord Shaftesbury’s Zionist project was launched in 1839, the British Empire created the Palestinian Exploration Fund in 1865, and the founder of modern Zionism, Theodor Herzl, joined the cause of convincing the world’s Jews to live in the desert, but the role of British intelligence’s hidden hand in shaping the state of Israel, as well as international fascism more broadly, is often ignored. [1]
It wasn’t ignored by Sir Winston Churchill, then Lord of the British Admiralty during WWI. He wrote forcefully about the international Jewish conspiracy to take over the world on one hand, but he also spoke proudly of Zionism, saying in 1917:
“If, as it may well happen, there should be created in our own lifetime by the banks of the Jordan a Jewish state under the protection of the British crown … [it] would be especially in harmony with the truest interests of the British Empire.”
While Churchill could not be said to be a supporter of Hitler’s National Socialism, up until 1935, he loudly proclaimed his admiration for Hitler and also spoke fondly of Mussolini’s Black Shirts. Churchill was also a rampant racist who presided over the mass extermination of ‘lower races’ as displayed in the controlled Bengal famine (killing three million Indians) in 1943. Like most other dominant Round Table leaders of Britain at this time, Churchill was an ‘imperial socialist,’ which has always been at the heart of 20th-century fascism.
Without the force of numerous antisemitic fascists throughout the last two centuries, Zionism would have never been possible.
Take as an example the case of Lord Arthur Balfour, a leading strategist of the Rhodes-Milner Round Table Group. Balfour co-authored the Balfour Accords in 1917 alongside Leo Amery, Lord Milner, and Walter Rothschild. It shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn that, like Churchill, Lord Balfour was also a devoted white supremacist, Zionist, and supporter of fascism.
Prime Minister Lloyd George, who oversaw the project at this time, was an ardent social imperialist (aka international fascist) who openly praised Nazism alongside another pro-Nazi royal named King Edward VIII.

This is the last chapter of the genocide. It is the final, blood-soaked push to drive the Palestinians from Gaza. No food. No medicine. No shelter. No clean water. No electricity. Israel is swiftly turning Gaza into a Dantesque cauldron of human misery where Palestinians are being killed in their hundreds and soon, again, in their thousands and tens of thousands, or they will be forced out never to return.
The final chapter marks the end of Israeli lies. The lie of the two-state solution. The lie that Israel respects the laws of war that protect civilians. The lie that Israel bombs hospitals and schools only because they are used as staging areas by Hamas. The lie that Hamas uses civilians as human shields, while Israel routinely forces captive Palestinians to enter potentially bobby trapped tunnels and buildings ahead of Israeli troops. The lie that Hamas or Palestine Islamic Jihad (PIJ) are responsible — the charge often being errant Palestinian rockets — for the destruction of hospitals, United Nations’ buildings or mass Palestinian casualties. The lie that humanitarian aid to Gaza is blocked because Hamas is hijacking the trucks or smuggling in weapons and war material. The lie that Israeli babies are beheaded or Palestinians carried out mass rape of Israeli women. The lie that 75 percent of the tens of thousands killed in Gaza were Hamas “terrorists.” The lie that Hamas, because it was allegedly rearming and recruiting new fighters, is responsible for the breakdown of the ceasefire agreement.
Israel’s naked genocidal visage is exposed. It has ordered the evacuation of northern Gaza where desperate Palestinians are camped out amid the rubble of their homes. What comes now is mass starvation — the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said on March 21 it has six days of flour supplies left — deaths from diseases caused by contaminated water and food, scores of killed and wounded each day under the relentless assault of bombs, missiles, shells and bullets. Nothing will function, bakeries, water treatment and sewage plants, hospitals — Israel blew up the damaged Turkish-Palestinian hospital on March 21 — schools, aid distribution centers or clinics. Less than half of the 53 emergency vehicles operated by the Palestine Red Crescent Society are functional due to fuel shortages. Soon there will be none.
Israel’s message is unequivocal: Gaza will be uninhabitable. Leave or die.

It was once again a hot, muggy day in Jakarta. The air was full of pollutants, epic traffic jams blocking entire center of the city. Biasa, as locals would say, or in a lax translation, ‘business as usual’.
It is September 29th, 2017, Friday, just one day before the most sinister anniversary in the entire Southeast Asia.
On September 30th, 1965, the Indonesian military obeying orders from foreign powers (mainly the US and the UK), overthrew the progressive and anti-imperialist government of President Sukarno, murdering between 1 and 3 million men, women and children (including almost all members of the Communist Party of Indonesia – PKI). This was done with the direct help of almost all the major religious organizations (Muslim, Protestant, Catholic and Hindu). The bloodshed continued well into 1966, and the “Rivers were choked with corpses and ran red from blood,” as I was told by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, the greatest Indonesian novelist. All the hopes for a socialist, just and egalitarian motherland were wasted.
Before the coup, Indonesia used to be a true internationalist nation, and was one of the proud founders of the Non-Aligned Movement (the West Javanese city of Bandung hosted its establishing conference in 1955). President Sukarno and his progressive and patriotic government used to hold in their hands almost all the natural resources, trying to build a proud, artistic and productive nation. Sukarno once even humiliated the US Ambassador, in front of a huge crowd, at a packed stadium: “To hell with your aid!” He did not need any Western aid. He was presiding overpotentially one of the richest nations on Earth.
The Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI), the third largest in the world after those of the Soviet Union and China, was going to win the elections, comfortably and democratically, in 1966, while being fully supported by President Sukarno. Their manifesto was clear: anti-imperialism, social justice and land reforms. But who were some of the largest landowners in Indonesia during that period? Religious leaders! And they, together with the military and corrupt elites, decided: “No!” This has to be stopped! No justice. No internationalism. No socialism.” They betrayed the nation and its people;they committed treason and on September 30, 1965, overthrew socialist democracy.
The results were horrifying. Perhaps the worst massacres of the 20th Century took place. Mass slaughter, mass rape, and cutting off of female breasts, torture, and shortly after the initial horrors, overflowing prisons and concentration camps. Around 40% of all the teachers of Java were slaughtered and the military was substituted into the school classrooms. Film studios and traditional theatres were shut down, and writers were sent to Buru concentration camp. Intellectualism was fully discouraged, while Communism, the Chinese language and culture, but also all progressive arts and creativity were either ridiculed, or out rightly banned. Promoted instead, were Western-style turbo-capitalism (that which was invented for the colonies, not that for the local consumption in Europe and North America), ‘religions’ (based on repetitive rituals, not on intellectual or spiritual search for God), ‘family values’ (read: patriarchal oppression), an empty pop culture, and selfishness, boosted by consumerism. All this combined gave birth to some of the worst corruption levels in the world.
Indonesia as it used to be before September 30, 1965, died. Unable to produce anything of substantial value, it began perpetrating the unbridled plunder of its own natural resources, predominantly on behalf of foreign conglomerates. The entire beautiful and naturally rich, enormous islands, like Borneo (the largest island in Asia and the second largest in the world), Sumatra and Papua,were converted into devastated, poisoned and fully privatized ecological and social nightmares.

It seems that killing everything decent and hopeful has not been enough for this regime. Even memories have to be killed, even dreams. The great progressive past of Indonesia is being smeared and twisted, until there is nothing more left, only confusion and mechanical religious, family and commercial rituals.

In this article, Alberto Toscano argues that fascism is embedded in the logic of Israel's colonial project.
Green-lit by Western governments and described by myriad human rights law experts as demonstrating clear ‘genocidal intent’, the State of Israel’s retaliation against Hamas’s Al Aqsa Flood October 7 attack has also elicited talk of fascism in multiple quarters. In a collective statement, the Birzeit University Union of Professors and Employees has spoken of ‘colonial fascism’ and of the ‘pornographic call to death of Arabs by settler Zionist politicians across the political lines’; in their own declaration, the Communist Party of Israel (Maki) and the left-wing coalition Hadash ‘put the full responsibility on the fascist right-wing government for the sharp and dangerous escalation’; meanwhile, Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro described the onslaught on Gaza as the ‘first experiment to deem all of us disposable’ in a ‘global 1933’ marked by climate catastrophe and capitalist entrenchment. Even quoting these lines probably falls foul of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, which has served as an important instrument in efforts to curtail peaceful international solidarity activism against Israeli apartheid, especially in the guise of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
And yet the recognition of an incipient fascism in the latest Netanyahu government and even Israeli society at large seems, if not mainstream, certainly prominent in public discourse in Israel itself, not least in the wake of protests against the recent judicial reforms aimed at eviscerating the vaunted autonomy of Israel’s Supreme Court. Four days before the Hamas attack, the newspaper Ha’aretz published an editorial under the heading ‘Israeli Neo-Fascism Threatens Israelis and Palestinians Alike’. One month earlier 200 Israeli high school students declared their refusal to be conscripted thus: ‘We decided that we cannot, in good faith, serve a bunch of fascist settlers that are in control of the government right now.’ In May, a Ha’aretz editorial opined that the ‘sixth Netanyahu government is beginning to look like a totalitarian caricature. There is almost no move associated with totalitarianism that has not been proposed by one of its extremist members and adopted by the rest of the incompetents it comprises, in their competition to see who can be more fully full fascist,’ while one of its editorialists described an ‘Israeli fascist revolution’ ticking off all items in the checklist, from virulent racism to a contempt for weakness, from a lust for violence to anti-intellectualism.

For Netanyahu, this war is about more than Gaza. It is about dodging corruption charges and clinging to power. Meanwhile, Religious Zionists, now the most powerful group in Israel, see the Gaza war not as a military operation but as the army of God’s vengeance in action. Britain and Europe remain complicit, unwilling to confront Israel’s massacres, illegal sieges, and violations of international law. While European leaders denounce Trump’s plans to carve up Ukraine with Russia, they turn a blind eye to the ongoing slaughter in Gaza, exposing the selective nature of their so-called moral leadership.
But Hearst warns that this is far from the end of the story. Neither Hamas nor the Palestinian people will disappear. And just as Tony Blair’s war in Iraq destroyed his legacy, Keir Starmer’s complicity in Gaza’s genocide could lead to his own political downfall. Whoever inherits the wreckage of the Trump era must face one undeniable reality: the West’s claim to moral leadership is gone - permanently.

“Alawites and Christians Slaughtered: Syrian Massacre Death Toll Reaches 7,000”

A blood-curdling massacre of Alawites and Christians that began on March 6 has raised discussion on the Balkanization of Syria, an idea that Israel is seemingly pushing for to curb Turkey’s expanding influence. In fact, the sectarian violence against minorities in Syria has become so untenable that Alawites are calling on Israel to intervene and save them from slaughter.
The anti-Alawite and Christian massacre took place in the context of armed clashes between the forces of the Turkish-backed Syrian transitional government and militants opposing the new regime. However, under the guise of eliminating “loyalists of the Assad regime,” Syrian government forces committed shocking massacres, including of women, children, and the elderly, that have instigated international outrage.
At least 7,000 Alawites and Christians were “slaughtered” according to Greek Member of the European Parliament, Nikolas Farantouris, who visited Damascus on March 8-9 and met with Syrian Foreign Ministry officials, the Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch and the Near East, the Greek community, and other Christian communities.
“Reliable data reports that 7,000 Christians and Alawites were slaughtered in an unprecedented atrocity against civilians. Christian and other communities with a multi-thousand-year presence in these areas are at risk of extinction. The new Islamic regime is leading Syria into an Islamic state and is pretending that it cannot control the paramilitaries and the gangs associated with them who attack innocent civilians,” Farantouris said following his visit.
This number is grossly higher than the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which reported that more than 1,068 civilians were killed, but still short of the 9,000 claimed by a regime supporter. Nonetheless, the massacre instigated Farantouris, a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense, on March 12 to push the European Union to reimpose some of the sanctions that were lifted on Syria.
At the same time, another Greek MEP, Emmanouil Fragkos, filed a request to the European Public Prosector’s Office for a European Arrest Warrant on Syria’s so-called president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group for Crimes Against Humanity, saying that the killings were “with the intent to reduce the population that does not express political support for the Al-Qaeda faction that has taken power in Syria.”

The killings have been so brutal and shocking that the Alawite leaders, once under the protection of Iran, the Assad regime, and Hezbollah, appealed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “Save us from the brutal regime, we will welcome you with songs and flowers.” This appeal would have been unimaginable only last month, but the Alawites are now facing an existential threat that they now see Netanyahu as a protector after he warned the new Syrian regime that Israel would intervene if they attacked the Druze.
It is recalled that on February 28, just a week before the massacres began, Reuters reported that Israel wants to counter Turkey’s growing influence in Syria by lobbying the US to keep it weak and decentralized, including by letting Russia keep its military bases in Tartous and Latakia, the Alawite heartland and where the massacres occurred. However, following the horrific massacre, conversation has moved away from decentralizing Syria and moved towards complete Balkanization.
Although the Syrian Democratic Forces, led by the Kurdish YPG and based in Eastern Syria, have seemingly reconciled with Damascus in what appears to be autonomy, the Druze situation remains unresolved and it appears that life for Alawites under the current regime is impossible, especially as videos published on social media show radical Islamists threatening to slaughter more Alawites.
Russian and US ambassadors requested an emergency closed-door session of the UN Security Council on March 10 to discuss the situation in Syria, and according to Pravda, “their perspectives on the crisis appear to be largely aligned.”
“A more promising approach for Moscow would be to collaborate with the US and Israel on establishing an Alawite state in the relevant provinces, where Russia’s naval base and Khmeimim airfield are located,” the outlet added.
This aligns with Syrian-Armenian geopolitical analyst Kevork Almassian, who, citing his sources, said Israeli and Russian intelligence and security officials met and discussed partitioning Latakia and Tartous from Syria. He said Israel had demanded the Russians to stay in Syria “to try to minimize Turkish influence, especially in the Mediterranean,” adding that Greece and Cyprus echoed similar sentiment.
Although the Balkanization of Syria remains speculative at this point, it remains difficult to see how the Alawite and Christian minorities can live under radical Islamic rule after the massacre. There is also the question of even if Balkanization was agreed upon by the US, Russia, and Israel, how can it be imposed without triggering another war if the authorities in Damascus refuse the partition of Syria?

Google employees and human rights groups have raised concerns about the tech giant’s purchase of an Israeli start-up in an unprecedented $32bn deal.
Google on Tuesday announced the all-cash acquisition of Wiz, an Israeli cloud security firm which was founded by former members of Unit 8200, an elite Israeli army cyber-espionage and surveillance unit.
The deal comes with the Google already facing internal and external pressure over its controversial Project Nimbus contract, through which along with Amazon it provides cloud computing and AI services to the Israeli government and military.
A spokesperson for No Tech for Apartheid, a coalition of Google and Amazon workers campaigning against the companies' involvement with Israel, said Google was "playing with fire" by buying Wiz.
"This acquisition marks a continuation of Google’s brazen support for the Israeli apartheid system," a spokesperson told Middle East Eye.

It is disgusting how many PhDs assume in their writings that tariffs are a product of a stupid Trump and his naive MAGA-hatted followers who do not understand economics, and is not the brainchild of Peter Thiel and a handful of billionaires who understand real economics too well.
No, the tariffs are not part of an effort to reshore manufacturing, granted a few crumbs have been tossed in that direction. No, they do not have anything to do with protecting American jobs or even stopping globalization. They are about advancing a new post-human globalization wherein everything is controlled by the super-rich and the trade part of the globalization ceases to be important. Remember that massive multinational firms have their own ships and ports and would benefit if global trade was shut down for everyone else but them.
The super rich stand to gain an enormous amount by destroying the global economy through tariffs and thus reducing the vast majority of humanity to near starvation.
Starving citizens can be easily corralled into high-tech Gazas and therein controlled by drones and robots. The model for government being advanced in Israel is being introduced into Argentina and the US (China and elsewhere) as part of this massive political and economic transformation.
Tariffs will be a critical weapon in this new approach to class warfare that is being prepared by the gang of three: Peter Thiel, Stephen Miller, and Russel Vought, the three men who actually run the Trump regime (I should say “gang of Four” but Elon Musk is such an idiot that I don’t think he plays a meaningful role).
The key idea behind these tariffs is to establish chokepoints on access to food, fuel, raw materials, and manufactured goods that will bring us to our knees. Elections and the popularity of politicians are the furthest thing from the minds of the people at private intelligence firms who are planning this move. This is the politics of raw and ruthless power that is running this show and demonstrating that the opinions of the vast majority can be ignored is a part of the strategy.

The super rich behind the curtains include Chinese, Russians, Indians and others. Those groups may be planning to wage war against each other at a future date, but at this moment they are all in on this together because their experts have told them that, granted the destruction of the environment taking place, they had better put most of humanity in coffins quickly.
They need to control society in an absolute sense. That is because their supercomputers indicate that organized resistance outside of the controlled and bogus “conservative,” “progressive” and “socialist” camps that they fund is rising. That means that they had better hurry up and destroy government, roll out AI control, and destroy the productive economy before they lose control—as they almost did in France before the Covid 19 operation was launched.
The tariffs are the same as the lockdowns, the bans on travel and shipping, and that social distancing that were employed in the Covid reign of terror to destroy the economy of citizens and to create deep alienation that impeded the organization of an opposition. The goal is the same: consolidation of the means of production, control of money, and the creation of a passive and discouraged population that can be easily manipulated.
These tariffs have as much to do with defending the domestic economy as the Covid lockdowns had to do with public health.
The destruction of global trade through tariffs this time will follow a different pathway than the Covid operation, although it is certainly possible that DARPA is involved this time as well. I suspect that even the billionaires are not entirely clear about what the ultimate result will be. The supercomputers have worked out numerous scenarios for outcomes, but whether the resutls will follow those models is not at all clear. Covid, after all, was supposed to follow all sorts of models worked out on supercomputers, but it is only worked in part and had to be abandoned because certain populations refused to conform in spite of all the scientific evidence that they would be overwhelmed by the propaganda and conform for self-preservation.
Moreover, just as the suspicion of hospitals and pharmaceutical corporations that resulted from the Covid fraud and slaughter woke up citizens to the dangers of medicine, so also the catastrophe resulting from the breakdown of global trade may lead some to understand that free trade has always a rich man’s game that aims to destroy our self-determination.

Operation Gladio was the codename for clandestine "stay-behind" operations of armed resistance that were organized by the Western Union (WU) (founded in 1948), and subsequently by NATO (formed in 1949) and by the CIA (established in 1947),[1][2] in collaboration with several European intelligence agencies during the Cold War.[3] Although Gladio specifically refers to the Italian branch of the NATO stay-behind organizations, Operation Gladio is used as an informal name for all of them. Stay-behind operations were prepared in many NATO member countries, and in some neutral countries.[4]
According to several Western European researchers, the operation involved the use of assassination, psychological warfare, and false flag operations to delegitimize left-wing parties in Western European countries, and even went so far as to support anti-communist militias and right-wing terrorism as they tortured communists and assassinated them, such as Eduardo Mondlane in 1969.[5][6][7][8] The United States Department of State rejected the view that they supported terrorists and maintains that the operation served only to resist a potential invasion of Western European countries by the Soviet Union.[9]
History and general stay-behind structure
British experience during World War II
Following the fall of France in 1940, Winston Churchill created the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to both assist resistance movements and carry out sabotage and subversive operations in occupied Europe. It was revealed half a century later that SOE was complemented by a stay-behind organisation in Britain, created in extreme secrecy, to prepare for a possible invasion by Nazi Germany.
A network of resistance fighters was formed across Britain and arms caches were established. The network was recruited, in part, from the 5th (Ski) Battalion of the Scots Guards (which had originally been formed, but was not deployed, to fight alongside Finnish forces fighting the Soviet invasion of Finland).[10] The network, which became known as the Auxiliary Units, was headed by Major Colin Gubbins – an expert in guerrilla warfare (who would later lead SOE). The units were trained, in part, by "Mad Mike" Calvert, a Royal Engineers officer who specialised in demolition by explosives and covert raiding operations. To the extent that they were publicly visible, the Auxiliary Units were disguised as Home Guard units, under GHQ Home Forces. The network was allegedly disbanded in 1944; some of its members subsequently joined the Special Air Service and saw action in North-West Europe.
While David Lampe published a book on the Auxiliary Units in 1968,[11] their existence did not become widely known by the public until reporters such as David Pallister of The Guardian revived interest in them during the 1990s.
Post-war creation
After World War II, the UK and the US decided to create "stay-behind" paramilitary organizations, with the official aim of countering a possible Soviet invasion through sabotage and guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines. Arms caches were hidden, escape routes prepared, and loyal members recruited, whether in Italy or in other European countries. Its clandestine "cells" were to stay behind in enemy-controlled territory and to act as resistance movements, conducting sabotage, guerrilla warfare and assassinations.
Clandestine stay-behind (SB) units were created with the experience and involvement of former SOE officers.[12] Following Giulio Andreotti's October 1990 revelations, General Sir John Hackett, former commander-in-chief of the British Army on the Rhine, declared on November 16, 1990, that a contingency plan involving "stay behind and resistance in depth" was drawn up after the war. The same week, Anthony Farrar-Hockley, former commander-in-chief of NATO's Forces in Northern Europe from 1979 to 1982, declared to The Guardian that a secret arms network was established in Britain after the war.[13] Hackett had written in 1978 a novel, The Third World War: August 1985, which was a fictionalized scenario of a Soviet Army invasion of West Germany in 1985. The novel was followed in 1982 by The Third World War: The Untold Story, which elaborated on the original. Farrar-Hockley had aroused controversy in 1983 when he became involved in trying to organise a campaign for a new Home Guard against a potential Soviet invasion.[14]
NATO provided a forum to integrate, coordinate, and optimise the use of all SB assets as part of the Emergency War Plan. This coordination included the military SB units, which were part of NATO's order of battle, and the clandestine SBOs run by NATO nations. Western secret services had cooperated in various bilateral, triparty, and multilateral fora in the creation, training, and running of clandestine Stay-behind organisations (SBO) soon after World War II. In 1947, France, the United Kingdom, and the Benelux countries had created a joint policy on SB in the Western Union Clandestine Committee (WUCC), a forum of the Western Union, the European defence alliance predating NATO. The format entered into NATO structures around 1951–1952 when the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR) established such an 'ad hoc' committee, the Clandestine Planning Committee (CPC) at SHAPE. The peacetime role of the CPC would have been to coordinate the different military and paramilitary plans and programmes in NATO nations (and partners like Switzerland and Austria) in order to avoid duplication of effort. The CPC itself had at least two working groups – one on communications and one on networks. SACEUR also established a Special Projects Branch to develop and coordinate 'clandestine forces operating in support of SACEUR's military forces'.[15]
In 1957, the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Benelux countries, all of which ran SBOs in Western Europe, established the 'Six Powers Lines Committee' which became the Allied Clandestine Committee in 1958 and, after 1976, the Allied Coordination Committee (ACC). The ACC has been described as a technical committee to bring national SBOs together. It took its guidance from the CPC and organized multinational exercises. The authority of SACEUR when it came to clandestine operations was discussed in the early 1950s as one can gather from the document 'SHAPE Problems Outstanding with the Standing Group', which, under sub-heading 'IV. Special Plans' calls for the 'Delineation of Responsibilities of the Clandestine Services and of SACEUR on Clandestine Matters Including Pertinent Definitions and Organizations' and 'Principles for Unorthodox Warfare Planning'. While all this concerned the highest level of NATO command, coordination in time of crisis had to be arranged. Thus, to coordinate these activities at different command levels in wartime, SACEUR created the Allied Clandestine Coordinating Groups (ACCG) staffed with personnel from NATO nations at SHAPE and the subordinate commands. In case of war, SACEUR was meant to exercise operational control of national clandestine services' assets, according to each nation's existing policies, through the ACCG. By 1961 though, 'both SHAPE and CPC [now] accepted that such SB activity [guerrilla warfare and resistance under Soviet occupation] was a purely national responsibility'.[16]
Upon learning of the discovery, the parliament of the European Union (EU) drafted a resolution sharply criticizing the fact.[clarification needed] Yet only Italy, Belgium and Switzerland carried out parliamentary investigations, while the administration of President George H. W. Bush refused to comment.[17]
NATO's "stay-behind" organizations were never called upon to resist a Soviet invasion. According to a November 13, 1990, Reuters cable,[18] "André Moyen – a former member of the Belgian military security service and of the [stay-behind] network – said Gladio was not just anti-Communist but was for fighting subversion in general. He added that his predecessor had given Gladio 142 million francs ($4.6 million) to buy new radio equipment."[19]

Despite a projected lifetime cost of over $2 trillion, this aircraft only meets mission requirements about 30% of the time. If we ended or paused the F-35 program now, we’d free up $12 billion annually. The military-industrial complex can afford a few less fancy jets that destroy land and lives, especially when they don’t even do their job right.
2. Reassess Long-Range Missile Defense (Save $9.3B+ per year)
For over half a century, we’ve sunk an eye-watering $400 billion into long-range missile defense systems that have never delivered. The cold, hard truth is these systems are ineffective against real-world threats. In fact, no missile defense technology has ever proven capable of neutralizing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) attack. Cutting back on these programs would save us $9.3 billion per year—money that could be better spent on diplomacy initiatives that actually work.
3. Cut the Sentinel ICBM Program (Save $3.7B+ per year)
ICBMs were once the crown jewels of our nuclear deterrence strategy, but they’re outdated in today’s geopolitical climate. With more reliable and flexible platforms like submarines, bombers, and emerging hypersonic technologies, maintaining an expensive, high-risk ICBM arsenal makes little sense. Ending the Sentinel ICBM program would save taxpayers $3.7 billion annually, and even more in the long run, with total savings over its lifespan estimated at $310 billion. It’s time to face facts: we don’t need to keep pouring money into a strategy that no longer aligns with modern defense needs. Especially when the best nuclear deterrence system is ending nuclear weapons programs to begin with.
4. Cease Procurement of Aircraft Carriers (Save $2.3B+ per year)
Aircraft carriers are relics of a bygone era, costing billions to build and maintain, while becoming increasingly vulnerable to modern missile technology. These floating cities are no longer the symbols of naval power they once were. By halting new aircraft carrier procurements, we can save $2.3 billion a year—money that could be better allocated to ways that actually keep us safe in the 21st century like housing, healthcare or climate justice.

On February 27 President Putin, in an address to FSB security officials, stated that the initial communication with the US administration “inspires certain hopes.”
The world can understand what these hopes are, faint as they presently appear, the hope that the new American administration under Donald Trump has recognised its defeat in its war against Russia and, therefore, is ready to engage in negotiations to extricate itself from the disaster it has created in Ukraine.
The Russian leadership is not naïve, and knows that the Americans will try to use any negotiations to extricate itself on terms as favourable to themselves as they can bargain for, yet the fact the Americans came begging for a meeting does signal their recognition that Russia has the upper hand and that out of this can come a secure and lasting peace for Russia, for what remains of Ukraine, and for the world.
But if one just turned one’s head to look in the direction of Washington over the past few days and take in the talks between President Trump with President Macron of France, and Prime Minister Starmer of the United Kingdom, a completely opposite scenario appears. President Trump, knowing the firm position of Russia on all the issues, openly approved the proposed French-British gambit of inserting their troops as “peacekeepers” into Ukraine. He approved it and even went further and stated that because the NATO puppet, Zelensky, is going to sign a deal to hand over all the rare earth minerals in Ukraine to the USA, that this will naturally require US protection to guard the companies going in to take out these minerals.
But then when Zelensky met with Trump and JD Vance on air on Friday, the 28th it was apparent that Zelensky had refused to sign the mineral deal unless he got explicit guarantees of more military assistance against Russia. Trump refused to give any explicit guarantees or any guarantees at all unless Zelensky first signed the deal. But Zelensky was not content with vague assurances that security would be provided once the deal was signed. He doesn’t trust Trump to do it.
The disagreement broke out into the open on live television for the world to see as Trump and Vance angrily lectured Zelensky, dressed him down like a truant schoolboy while Zelensky tried to stay calm and kept asking about guarantees of security, which drew more angry comments from Trump and Vance. It was quite the public spectacle. But again showed, the waning of American power, the real objectives of the Americans, and the thorny path of the road to peace since even Zelensky, their puppet does not trust their word. His relatively calm demeanour in the encounter must reflect the backing he has of Europe and the UK.

Modern criminology invites us to revisit our approach to the Nord Stream sabotage and ultimately forces us to explain the decisions made by the Nord Stream saboteurs and the reasons which led them to target the Nord Stream pipelines in the deeper waters of the Danish and Swedish Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) in the Baltic Sea, rather than opting for a mission in the considerably shallower waters of the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), where both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 could have easily been targeted at once.
This fundamentally raises critical questions regarding the saboteur’s tactical operation, raising the possibility that submarines were involved in the Nord Stream sabotage.

The rationale for the presence of submarines is rooted in their inherent qualities of stealth and discretion – which render them a crucial element in both conventional naval operations and irregular warfare. This distinctive capability enables submarines to influence the trajectory of crisis and military engagements by positioning themselves strategically at critical times and sites to gather intelligence on perceived enemies’ positions or infrastructures, and open valuable options to execute covered operations.
Submarines are among if not the most lethal and effective weapons used by world-leading navies, because of their ability to deliver substantial blows to peer adversaries while seeking to capitalize on their vulnerabilities. It has become apparent that the Nord Stream pipelines were extremely vulnerable to an attack conducted from the bottom of the Baltic Sea when all eyes were focused on NATO naval surface exercises.
In this article, we will explain how a coordinated NATO submarine covert operation was planned and rehearsed to deliver a Concept of Operations (CONOPS) that the saboteurs would have devised before prosecuting the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines on September 26, 2022 in the Danish and Swedish Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). We will also demonstrate how such an operation fits squarely into NATO’s operational Chain of Command during its BALTOPS 22 naval exercise in the summer of 2022, as well as Northern Coasts 2022 drill which coincided with the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022.

When the Nord Stream pipelines carrying natural gas from Russia to Germany were damaged last September, U.S. officials were quick to suggest Russia had bombed its own pipelines. But according to a new report by the legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, it was the U.S. Navy that carried out the sabotage, with help from Norway. Citing a source "with direct knowledge of the operational planning," Hersh writes on his Substack blog that planning for the mission began in December of 2021. The White House and the Norwegian government have since denied the claims. Hersh joins us for an in-depth interview to discuss his report and says the U.S. decision to bomb the pipelines was meant to lock allies into support for Ukraine at a time when some were wavering. "The fear was Europe would walk away from the war," he says. Hersh won a Pulitzer Prize in 1970 for his reporting on the My Lai massacre. His reporting on CIA spying on antiwar activists during the Vietnam War era helped lead to the formation of the Church Committee, which led to major reforms of the intelligence community, and in 2004, he exposed the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq.

It’s a lose-lose situation for Ukrainians. While they are dying to defend their land, financial institutions are insidiously supporting the consolidation of farmland by oligarchs and Western financial interests.
So says Frédéric Mousseau, Policy Director of the Oakland Institute, an independent think tank.
Depending on which sources to believe, between 100,000 and 300,000 Ukrainian soldiers (possibly more) have died during the conflict with Russia. That figure, of course, does not include civilian casualties.
The mainstream narrative in the West is that Russia grabbed Crimea and then invaded Ukraine. Russia is portrayed as the outright aggressor which wants to restore its control over large swathes of Europe.
However, this narrative is false and has been debunked by various commentators who explain in some depth how Ukraine has been used and manipulated as part of a geopolitical campaign formulated by neoconservatives in Washington to destabilise Russia.
The expansion of NATO towards the east, the US-backed coup in 2014 – followed by eight years of the shelling of the ethnic Russian eastern parts of the country by the regime in Kyiv resulting in around 14,000 deaths – led up to the military intervention by Russia, which regards the expansionism and militarism as an existential threat.
It is not the purpose of this article to explore these issues. Much has already been written on this elsewhere. But billions of dollars’ worth of military hardware has been sent to Ukraine by the NATO countries and hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians have died.
They died in the belief that they were protecting their nation – their land. A land that is among the most fertile in the world.
Professor Olena Borodina of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine says:
“Today, thousands of rural boys and girls, farmers, are fighting and dying in the war. They have lost everything. The processes of free land sale and purchase are increasingly liberalised and advertised. This really threatens the rights of Ukrainians to their land, for which they give their lives.”
Borodina is quoted in the February 2023 report by the Oakland Institute War and Theft: The Takeover of Ukraine’s Agricultural Land, which reveals how oligarchs and financial interests are expanding control over Ukraine’s agricultural land with help and financing from Western financial institutions.
Aid provided to Ukraine in recent years has been tied to a drastic structural adjustment programme requiring the creation of a land market through a law that leads to greater concentration of land in the hands of powerful interests. The programme also includes austerity measures, cuts in social safety nets and the privatisation of key sectors of the economy.
Frédéric Mousseau, co-author of the report, says:
“Despite being at the centre of news cycle and international policy, little attention has gone to the core of the conflict — who controls the agricultural land in the country known as the breadbasket of Europe. [The] Answer to this question is paramount to understanding the major stakes in the war.”
The report shows the total amount of land controlled by oligarchs, corrupt individuals and large agribusinesses is over nine million hectares — exceeding 28% of Ukraine’s arable land (the rest is used by over eight million Ukrainian farmers).
The largest landholders are a mix of Ukrainian oligarchs and foreign interests — mostly European and North American as well as the sovereign fund of Saudi Arabia. A number of large US pension funds, foundations and university endowments are also invested in Ukrainian land through NCH Capital – a US-based private equity fund, which is the fifth largest landholder in the country.
President Zelenskyy put the land reform into law in 2020 against the will of the vast majority of the population who feared it would exacerbate corruption and reinforce control by powerful interests in the agricultural sector.

The Oakland Institute notes that, while large landholders are securing massive financing from Western financial institutions, Ukrainian farmers — essential for ensuring domestic food supply — receive virtually no support. With the land market in place, amid high economic stress and war, this difference of treatment will lead to more land consolidation by large agribusinesses.

What is happening today between Europe and the US under the Donald J. Trump administration is becoming crystal clear.
First of all, “Europe” is under the control of Great Britain, as last weekend’s meeting called by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer showed, where Starmer and his European counterparts, along with King Charles III, convened to welcome back Ukrainian faux-president Zelensky from the latter’s disastrous Oval Office smackdown by Trump.
But make no mistake. This is the Great Britain run by the globalist financial elite headquartered in the City of London, not the Britain occupied by an increasingly destitute population afflicted by soaring energy costs and long-term disability rates caused by what many fear is an epidemic of Long Covid resulting from the mRNA “jab.” See this.
We are actually seeing the “undead” British Empire at work.
The globalist financial elite that rules the Empire is most recognizable today through the Rothschilds, as it has been for the last two centuries. The Rothschilds themselves are the tip of an older and more pervasive European hierarchy that has been termed the “Black Nobility.” Think in terms of the Club of Rome, WEF, Bilderberg, etc. But the City of London remains the nerve center.
There is a direct wire between London and the EU in Brussels and most of the capitals of the EU nations, as well as Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. This wire passes through NATO, originally a British creation, also headquartered in Brussels, and all the major European banks topped by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland.
Despite BREXIT, it’s no mistake that English remains the EU’s official language. Even in the English-speaking EU nations of Ireland and Malta, English is a colonialist tongue. It’s “the Master’s Voice.”
Until the demise of the Biden administration, the wire reached unimpeded across the Atlantic to New York and Washington, as well as to Ottawa. Staffing the nodes of the wire are the millions of operatives of the Deep State and its Mainstream Media throughout the Western world and around the globe.
What it all adds up to is the mailed fist of the British Empire, enforced until recently by American military might, in what could be its terminal iteration. Usually the Empire keeps itself hidden in the shadows. Now it is showing its claws and fangs.

After World War II, the designated enemy of the British Empire became the Soviet Union. It was Churchill who invented the term “Iron Curtain.” Accordingly, the British now proceeded to sucker the US into launching the Cold War via the Truman Doctrine and creation of the National Security State, with the NSA itself primarily a British listening post on American soil. As stated above, NATO was in fact a British brainchild.
Today, the “adversary” is Russia, the successor to the Soviet Union, with the British Empire helping to instigate and now stoke the fires of the West’s proxy war in Ukraine. The objective here is to sucker the US into World War III against Russia, where the British Empire and the globalist elite would be left as the only force standing. The enslavement of the US to this program has been going along well under every successive president in the latter part of the 20th and the early 21st centuries—until Donald J. Trump came along. A key, obviously, was the assassination of JFK in 1963.

But Trump and the American people have now fought back, despite Trump’s first-term mistakes, bringing on today’s confrontation only a month into his second go-round.
Trump is now breaking with Britain and the EU over Ukraine by moving to embrace America’s historic alignment with Russia that goes back as far as the American Civil War. In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the US to keep it out of the hands of Britain and to lay the groundwork for future rail links between Siberia and the US mainland. Russia and the US were allies in both British-instigated 20th century world wars.
Now the British Empire has panicked over the recent blow-up in the Oval Office between “clown-puppet” Zelensky and Trump/Vance/Rubio, et. al. Meanwhile, the Empire, using MI6, has helped to instigate Israel’s genocidal attacks in Gaza and elsewhere with possible war with Iran as a way to tie Trump’s hands while their filthy project in Ukraine moves ahead.

Will Russia go from adversary to business partner?
In November 2023, the Economist published an interview with Valery Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of the Ukraine armed forces, who acknowledged that the war with Russia had become a stalemate. “There will most likely be no deep and beautiful breakthrough,” Zaluzhny said. “The simple fact is that we see everything that the enemy is doing and they see everything we are doing. In order for us to break this deadlock we need something new, like the gunpowder which the Chinese invented and which we are still using to kill each other.”
The interview made headlines, but nothing happened. The war continued, with Ukraine receiving support from the Biden administration. Zaluzhny was one of a series of military commanders to be fired by President Volodymr Zelensky. (A presidential election scheduled for 2024 did not take place, and Zelensky has stayed in office, as Ukraine has been under martial law.)
I wrote at the time that Zaluzhny’s stunning words had been planned in advance, as the Economist editors couldn’t have known, via a series of indirect contacts between Zaluzhny and Russian General Valery Gerasimov, who has been chief of staff of the Russian army since 2012.
I was told by an involved American official that the objective of the interview was to apply public pressure on the US and Russia to end a trench war in which there was no victory to be had. Generals from Ukraine and Russia are still talking, I was told this week, and the prospects of a settlement are much better because the input from the US comes not from the rigid Biden administration but from President Donald Trump, who has been far more open to contact with Russia. “Too many Americans,” the official added, “see Ukraine as one of the original thirteen colonies and Putin as King George III,” the mad British king who lost the American colonies during the Revolutionary War.

The Crime of 1873” was a law passed by the US Congress, possibly under the influence of British bankers, to remove silver coinage from the money supply. Besides having the immediate effect of crashing the US money supply, resulting in dire hardship for everyone involved in the producing economy, this misguided legislation symbolized the struggle over the control of money creation and circulation during the latter part of the 19th century.
The struggle was actually a war between the globalist banking elite that sought to control the world economy vs. everyone else who worked for a living, even including the managerial and ownership classes who brought about the Industrial Revolution.
A single word defined the battlefield: “Gold.”
By controlling and hoarding gold, the bankers could ensure that the loans they advanced to fuel growing industrial production would not be inflationary, meaning that borrowers could not repay with a depreciated currency. Within the US, prices actually fell during this period, despite the explosion of business activity. The big loser were workers who could barely rise above starvation, leading to strikes, riots, and the growth of left-wing socialistic ideologies.

The bankers finally won the war through passage of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, with the gold standard reigning supreme for decades to come.

A Financial Battleground Emerges
After the American Civil War, open social conflict broke out, fueled by the accelerating divergence between lower and higher income groups. The American working class rarely became overtly revolutionary, but violence did occur at various junctures. Both sides sought to gain political power, with the wealthy classes usually, but not always, prevailing.
The rich wanted lower taxes, banks lending to the government to service government debt, and elimination of the Greenbacks, which Lincoln had called the “peoples’ currency.” The lower income groups, growing with industrial expansion, wanted progressive taxes, with the rich paying higher proportionately in exchange for their privileges, and liberal Civil War veterans’ pensions.
Alexander Hamilton’s vision of an American empire based on an industrial society was now coming to the fore, but so was the central role of bankers and investors. President Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, remarked:
“An aristocracy based on nearly two-and-one-half billion of national securities [i.e., government debt] has risen in the Northern states to assume that political control which was formerly given to the slave oligarchy.”[i]
This aristocracy of government creditors, earning their money from industrial growth and banking and multiplying it through lending, increasingly ruled the nation and created the foundations of the Gilded Age.
At the same time, the end of the war saw drastic cuts in federal government expenditures, slightly higher taxes in certain categories and large cuts in others, and an ongoing budget surplus that the government wanted to use to recall the Greenbacks—but could not, due to popular protest.
By the late 1870s, government expenditures had settled at four percent of national income, after having risen to 25 percent during the war. Interest on the public debt, which had reached enormous proportions, was 40 percent of all expenditures. Over time, this figure was cut in half, but the national debt would never be eliminated.
Costs for the Army and Navy dropped precipitously. The military pension system became an early form of social security. Civil service and public works expenditures were small, at least at the federal level. Infrastructure continued to be a primary function of state and local governments, as it had before the war. Post-Civil War aid to railroad construction primarily involved private bank loans—$16,000-$48,000 per mile for the Transcontinental Railroad. The federal government also granted the railroads land that had been taken from the Indians.
During this period, Congress engaged in heavy reductions to excise taxes, though without manufacturers or retailers cutting prices. So merchants enjoyed a windfall. The federal inheritance tax and the national sales tax were eliminated.
By now, Karl Marx had made his appearance. Marx’s Das Kapital was published in German in 1867, and in English some 20 years later. Socialism was well on its way to becoming universally demonized in the US, as remains the case today. From this point on, every measure of social or economic improvement was labeled by the rich as “socialism” or “communism.”
The wealthy class was finally able to lobby for complete elimination of the federal income tax, which was rescinded in 1872. Stiff taxes on liquor, tobacco, and various trade licenses remained. Protectionist tariffs favorable to manufacturers also continued. “Buy America” continued to be in vogue. This was a bulwark against cheap manufactured goods from Great Britain.
Attempts now were made to convert the Greenbacks to interest-bearing Treasury bonds. But the measure would have reduced their value as currency, so it was politically unpopular and was removed from the congressional agenda during a mild business downturn in 1868. Specie payments had been suspended during the war, with conservatives now lobbying for “resumption.”
“A Reset” that Serves the People
The post-Civil War period was a time of Republican presidents, starting with the election of Grant in 1868, and continuing through Hayes, Garfield, and Arthur until the election of Democrat Grover Cleveland in 1888. They followed the familiar Republican program, still promoted today, of cutting federal expenditures, reducing taxes on the rich, and favoring business interests.
The federal government’s main activity, which had been fighting rebels, now was fighting Indians and providing a minimal handout of financial support to those it was able to herd onto reservations. But the Army was a small fraction of what it had been during the Civil War. In 1876, 37.8 percent of the federal budget was for interest to lenders on the national debt; 20.1 percent was for the Army and Navy; and 10.7 percent was for veterans’ pensions. By contrast, 2.2 percent was for Indian welfare support.
Meanwhile, government bonds were sold to service the debt through private investment brokers who made a living from government commissions. One of the leaders in this enterprise continued to be Jay Cooke of Civil War bond fame. Another was the up-and-coming banker, J.P Morgan. Even though the government was running an ongoing surplus, the net federal deficit was slow to decline from its wartime high of $2.77 billion in 1866, only falling to $1.83 billion by 1884.
Although the role of the federal government in economic matters was negligible, the existence of the federal debt was essential, as national banks were required to purchase Treasury bonds as a reserve for making loans. Hence the system was inelastic in that an honest effort by the government to pay its debts also reduced the circulation of the currency[i.e., national bank notes]. Then, as now, federal debt was viewed as a necessary source of financial liquidity.
With the economy growing, consumers and farmers were frantic for the government to increase the money supply. This fueled the movement for “bimetallism” or the support of silver as a basis for money along with gold. It also fueled the founding of the Greenback Party, which was active between 1874 and 1889. The party ran candidates in three presidential elections, in 1876, 1880, and 1884, before it faded away.

If this trend continues, Japan has already reached the point of no return. The country's population is expected to be half its current size by the end of the century, and the Japanese race itself is forecast to go extinct when the last Japanese child is born 695 years from now. But, given that the baby bust is happening quicker than anyone predicted, even that 695-years-away estimate may be optimistic.
And here's the even worse news. It isn't just Japan. Birth rates are declining in country after country around the globe.
So, here's the million-dollar question: why is this happening?

Millions of people worldwide are concerned about climate change and believe there is a climate emergency. For decades we have been told by the United Nations that Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from human activity are causing disastrous climate change. In 2018, a UN IPCC report even warned that ‘we have 12 years to save the Earth’, thus sending millions of people worldwide into a frenzy.
Thirty-five years ago, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the (World Meteorological Organization) WMO established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide scientific advice on the complex topic of climate change. The panel was asked to prepare, based on available scientific information, a report on all aspects relevant to climate change and its impacts and to formulate realistic response strategies. The first assessment report of the IPCC served as the basis for negotiating the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Governments worldwide have signed this convention, thereby, significantly impacting the lives of the people of the world.
However, many scientists dispute with the UN-promoted man-made climate change theory, and many people worldwide are confused by the subject, or are unaware of the full facts. Please allow me to provide some information you may not be aware of.
1. Very few people actually dig into the data, they simply accept the UN IPPC reports. Yet many highly respectable and distinguished scientists have done exactly that and found that the UN-promoted manmade climate change theory is seriously flawed. Are you aware that almost 2,000 of the world’s leading climate scientists and professionals in over 30 countries have signed a declaration that there is no climate emergency and have refuted the United Nations claims in relation to man-made climate change? 2. I have also signed this declaration. How can I make such an assertion? I have experience in the field as a former scientist at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, UK Government; and as former staff member at United Nations Environment, where I was responsible for servicing the Pollution Release and Transfer Register Protocol, a Multinational Environmental Agreement, involving the monitoring of pollutants to land, air, and water worldwide. Real pollution exists, but the problem is not CO2. Industrial globalisation has produced many substances that are registered as pollutants, including thousands of new man-made chemical compounds, toxins, nano-particles and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that are in violation of the scientific pre-cautionary principle.

3. Next, I will mention the Irish Climate Science Forum (ICSF) website, a valuable resource founded by Jim O’Brien. I am grateful to the ICSF for their excellent work in highlighting the scientific flaws in the UN climate narrative. The ICSF provides a comprehensive lecture series from renowned international scientists providing much evidence, analysis, and data that contradicts the UN assertions. The ICSF scientific view coincides with those of the Climate Intelligence (CLINTEL) foundation that operates in the fields of climate change and climate policy. CLINTEL was founded in 2019 by emeritus professor of geophysics Guus Berkhout and science journalist Marcel Crok. Based on this common conviction, 20 Irish scientists and several ICSF members have co-signed the CLINTEL World Climate Declaration “There is No Climate Emergency” (see this).
4. The reality is that the climate has always been changing, the climate changes naturally and slowly in its own cycle, and CO2 emissions (and methane from livestock, such as cows) are not dominant factors in climate change. In essence, therefore, the incessant UN, government, and corporate-media-produced climate hysteria in relation to CO2 emissions (and also methane from cows) has no scientific basis. It appears to me the UN narrative is yet another example of fake science being used to drive an ulterior agenda, see also the book Godless Fake Science.
In truth I am against ‘real’ pollution, and the reality is that the CO2 component is not a pollutant. Unfortunately, many misinformed environmentalists are driving around in electric cars, the battery production for which has caused vast amounts of ‘real’ pollution via the industrial mining and processing of rare earth metals, and the consequent pollution to land, air and water systems. 5. The conclusions of the Climate Intelligence foundation include the following
There is no climate emergency. Therefore, there is no cause for panic and alarm.
Natural as well as anthropogenic factors cause warming: The geological archive reveals that Earth’s climate has varied as long as the planet has existed, with natural cold and warm phases. The Little Ice Age ended as recently as 1850. Therefore, it is no surprise that we now are experiencing a period of warming.
Warming is far slower than predicted: The world has warmed significantly less than predicted by IPCC on the basis of modeled anthropogenic forcing. The gap between the real world and the modeled world tells us that we are far from understanding climate change.
Climate policy relies on inadequate models: Climate models have many shortcomings and are not remotely plausible as global policy tools. They blow up the effect of greenhouse gases such as CO2. In addition, they ignore the fact that enriching the atmosphere with CO2 is beneficial.
CO2 is plant food, the basis of all life on Earth: CO2 is not a pollutant. It is essential to all life on Earth. Photosynthesis is a blessing. More CO2 is beneficial for nature, greening the Earth: additional CO2 in the air has promoted growth in global plant biomass. It is also good for agriculture, increasing the yields of crops worldwide.
Global warming has not increased natural disasters: There is no statistical evidence that global warming is intensifying hurricanes, floods, droughts and suchlike natural disasters, or making them more frequent.
It also appears to me that various catastrophes attributed to “CO2-induced climate change” are nothing of the sort. I note the following articles:

He says the UN IPPC is misleading humanity about climate change. He tried to warn that the IPPC were publishing lies and false information that would inevitably be discredited. In an interview, he stated: “This is the most dangerous and frightening part of it. How a lobbyist group, such as the IPPC, has been able to fool the whole world. These organised and deceitful forces are dangerous” and expressed shock “that the UN and governments would parade children around the place at UN Climate summits as propaganda props”. He states:
“solar activity is the dominant factor in climate and not Co2… something is basically sick in the blame Co2 hypothesis… It was launched more than 100 years ago and almost immediately excellent physicists demonstrated that the hypothesis did not work.
I was the chairman of the only international committee on sea levels changes and as such a person I was elected to be the expert reviewer on the (UN IPPC) sea levels chapter. It was written by 38 persons and not a single one was a sea level specialist… I was shocked by the low quality it was like a student paper… I went through it and showed them that it was wrong and wrong and wrong…The scientific truth is on the side of the sceptics… I have thousands of high ranked scientists all over the world who agree that NO, CO2 is not the driving mechanism and that everything is exaggerated.

Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest and detention in a Louisiana ICE facility is a harbinger for a new authoritarian era of the United States. Khalil’s arrest, the capitulation of Columbia University against dissent and protest by its own students and the Trump administration’s threat of stripping the university of $400 million in grants if it does not meet its requests is just one place where the tentacles of fascism tighten their grip.
Katherine Franke, a former law school professor at Columbia, is on the front lines of this assault. Her support for student protests and her condemnation of the university for not addressing the harassment of pro-Palestinian students has earned what she called, “a termination dressed up in more palatable terms.”
Franke joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to address the Constitutional crisis that faces the US, how it has manifested itself on university campuses and what are the next steps in challenging it.
“They’re using immigration laws now to come after protesters or people who are voicing views that are critical of the Trump administration who are not US citizens. They’ll come next for us, the US citizens, with the criminal law,” Franke warns.
As for universities and Columbia specifically, Franke points to the shift in institutional integrity within schools. Hedge fund managers, venture capitalists and corporate lawyers now run these institutions and their goals aren’t to maintain the principles of education and democracy, but rather the financial bottom line.
Franke says Columbia “is humiliating itself in this process of negotiation with a bully that will not end because it’s that repeated proof of ‘I have all the power and you have none.’ That is what governance looks like at this point. There’s no principle at stake here. It’s about an abusive exercise of power accompanied by humiliation.”

Why is it “awkward?”
First: It’s not news, not to any of us, not to most people who look into things, and this guy, Michael Collins Piper wrote this book, Final Judgment: The Missing Link In The JFK Assassination Conspiracy, about it a long time ago. He turned up dead in a hotel room, in 2015, which he had moved to after his house caught fire.
It’s “awkward” because it forces us to experience battery, shame, and gaslighting even when we’re just citing CIA documents declassified by the President, and even Wikipedia.
It’s like a queasy elephant hovering over the nation, with each citizen choosing whether to see it, not see it, say something, or just continue to carry water for the sacred national cause of making sure we police one another for bad thoughts, (“anti-semitism”) even when they’re not even our own.
It makes it a schizophrenic experience to be an American, finally reduced to not knowing anything much except which kind of shame and filth is attached to which set of beliefs about anything that happened to us. That’s why we love “small talk,” which, after Covid, became simply not talking at all. All thinking, all studying history, and all talking is now trip-wired to make you lose people on all sides, and feel again, faintly dirty.
It’s “awkward” because Israel, a creation of the British Crown, remains a taboo subject, and American’s Siamese twin—”greatest ally,” allegedly misunderstood bullied scapegoat for America’s residual anti-semitism, and because “right wing,” formerly neo-conservative media has skillfully arranged for the truth about our entire history to be weaponized and set with traps of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Confront it and wind up diagnosed with a disease called anti-semitism you are not aware you have, or ignore it, and get called a Zionist stooge.
It’s awkward because President Donald Trump has not given his loyalists any instructions as to how to reconcile what seems like a major black eye to Israel, with his continued deference to Israel as our “greatest ally,” never mind the implications for his son in law, or Elon Musk’s Israel fawning theatrics.
Like the magicians always arrange it, both “sides”
have a case: MAGA loyalists who believed Trump would come through on the JFK
files, damn the torpedoes and Israel’s feelings, vs. “black-pillers'“ who see
Trump as a committed Zionist, (especially in light of last week’s EO casting a
chilling pall on all “criticism” of Israel,) but can’t quite explain how this
document release fits in to their theory of everything. All I know is I feel
dizzy and nauseous, and Trump, as usual, is not addressing us our anxieties and
questions.

During Donald Trump’s first four years in the White House, the stranger to Washington’s infernal ways got nothing done: That cabal of various Deep State appendages — the Democratic Party’s upper echelons, the intelligence apparatus, the Justice Department and the F.B.I., and corporate media — made sure of that.
Trump seems to have thought this through during his four years playing golf at Mar-a–Lago. He returned to the White House two months ago this week with a full-dress plan to get done what he couldn’t first time around.
And now look. Donald Trump the subverted, we have to conclude, was better than Donald Trump the empowered. Who’d’a thunk it? The more Trump does this time around the more one looks back with a weird fondness to the subterfuge of the Trump I regime, unlawful and corrosive of our ailing republic as all that was.
Simplicius, the always stimulating commentator who takes his name from the sixth century Neoplatonist, posted an interesting summation of the present state of affairs the other day. “Trump,” he wrote, “now wallows in a post-euphoric doldrums phase of his floundering second term, when virtually every one of his campaign promises has faltered or flopped.”
Floundering presidents tend to make messes. The mess to which Simplicius refers concerns the Ukraine war and Washington’s relations with Moscow. Ending the former and repairing the latter was the biggest of Trump’s many big promises during last year’s campaign season.
Trump has been all over the place on this key question. The man who stood squarely against the war has now resumed supplying Ukraine with weapons and battlefield intelligence. This past week he had Marco Rubio, who comes over more as a schoolboy than a secretary of state, offering Moscow a ceasefire deal with the Kiev regime as if — one either laughs or does the other thing — the U.S. is the honest broker rather than the principal belligerent in the proxy war former President Joe Biden recklessly provoked.
It is the same wherever one looks — north to Canada, south to Mexico, across the Atlantic to Europe, across the Pacific to China. Altering the direction of policy is one thing, very often what is warranted; creating crises is another, and usually the mark of diplomatic incompetence.
Tariffs that have people recalling the consequences of the Smoot–Hawley Act back in the 1930s, relations with Beijing drifting from tension to hostility, the silly talk of owning Greenland, invading Mexico, repossessing the Panama Canal, and on and on: It is tempting to say Trump is starting to make Joe Biden look good — a feat that would surpass all men’s believing.
But no, we must turn to Israel and the Zionists’ campaign of terror against the Palestinians of Gaza and now the West Bank. And as we do we must forget about anyone making Joe Biden look good — not now, not in the histories yet to be written.

The Israeli military on Tuesday morning began launching large-scale airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip, marking the full-scale resumption of Israel’s genocidal war.
As of about 5:00 am Gaza time, Al Jazeera reported that over 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes on homes and tents sheltering displaced Palestinians across the Strip.
Pictures and videos from Gaza that have surfaced online show there is a large number of child casualties. “Israeli bombardment has returned to Gaza, bringing massacres with it once again,” Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif wrote on X. “The bodies of children, killed in their sleep, lay scattered in the aftermath.”
The massive attack came about two weeks after Israel imposed a total blockade on aid and all other goods entering Gaza at the end of the first phase of the ceasefire deal. Israel violated the agreement by imposing the blockade, refusing to engage in negotiations on the second phase, and killing Palestinians throughout the truce.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement Tuesday morning that he instructed the Israeli military to escalate in Gaza in response to Hamas rejecting US and Israeli terms for an extended temporary ceasefire. Hamas wanted Israel to stick to the deal it agreed to in January, which would have involved a permanent truce and full Israeli withdrawal.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have instructed the IDF to take strong action against the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu’s office said. “This follows Hamas’s repeated refusal to release our hostages, as well as its rejection of all of the proposals it has received from US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and from the mediators.”
The statement added that Israel will “from now on, act against Hamas with increasing military strength. The operational plan was presented by the IDF over the weekend and approved by the political leadership.”
Hamas told Reuters that Israel had chosen to end the ceasefire unilaterally and that Israel’s attacks expose the remaining Israeli hostages to an “unknown fate.”
The White House confirmed that President Trump was notified before Israel launched the massive bombing. “The Trump administration and the White House were consulted by the Israelis on their attacks in Gaza tonight,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Leavitt repeated Trump’s threat that “all hell would break loose” in Gaza. Trump previously threatened that the “people of Gaza” would be “dead” if the hostages weren’t immediately freed.
Since President Trump came into office, he has provided a massive amount of military aid to Israel, approving over $12 billion in arms deals and supplying Israel with 2,000-pound bombs. The Trump administration did not pressure Israel to implement the ceasefire deal reached in January.

15 MARCH—Home demolitions surged in the northern West Bank governorates of Tulkarm and Jenin during the first week of March. On 6 March, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency reported that Israel Occupation Forces (IOF) destroyed 16 buildings in the camp of Nur Shams, located in the Tulkarm Governorate. Residents were given two and a half hours to vacate homes they had lived in for years, according to a Middle East Monitor report. The homes were demolished for a new road through the camp for military use.
This latest escalation of violence began on 21 January — timed for the day after Trump’s inauguration — when the I.O.F. launched a new military operation it named “iron wall.”
As the apartheid regime moves to annex the West Bank, it continues to target refugee camps with what is almost certainly the intent to destroy and empty them. This is a straight repeat of the Zionists’ operation as they emptied and destroyed the original homes and villages belonging to the grandparents and great grandparents of today’s refugees.
Operation “iron wall” coincides with Israel’s efforts to shut down all UNRWA facilities throughout Occupied Palestine. Without UNRWA, the camps will quickly collapse. The organization provides many of the services necessary to community and human life: education, primary health care, social services, infrastructure improvement and basic camp sanitation including overseeing water quality and garbage removal.
Destroying UNRWA is an effective way to erase the presence and existence of Palestinian refugees altogether. In effect, this renders U.N. resolution 194—which established a right of return for Palestinian refugees to the land and homes stolen during the Nakba—meaningless.

Even as refugee camps in the north are bulldozed, subject to controlled detonation, demolished, and otherwise emptied, the Zionist regime appears to be moving forward with plans to do the same in camps farther south.
What follows are extracts from a report sent to me by my correspondent in al–Arroub, Qadir al–Thaer. It summarizes disturbing accounts from camp residents of what is almost certainly the initial phase of a large-scale demolition of homes, with the ultimate goal of establishing a permanent IOF presence in the camp.
On Feb. 25, 2025, the Israeli army entered the camp and conducted field training exercises. This was followed by a large-scale raid on February 26. More than 60 soldiers, accompanied by armored vehicles, proceeded to a main street in the center of the camp. They took measurements and informed nearby residents of their plans to widen the street, which would require demolishing several homes.
The stated goal of this expansion is to facilitate the movement of armored vehicles and tanks in future incursions. The army has encountered difficulties navigating this particular road, which is one of the steepest slopes in the camp. It connects the southern and northern main roads of al-Arroub.
Pause for a moment and think about this: The Israeli army routinely conducts military training exercises in refugee camps—densely populated civilian communities—where people live and work and where children go to school and play in the streets. The Zionist regime thinks nothing of demolishing homes to facilitate its campaign of terror and total domination of Palestinian civilian life. All in willful violation of international law.
This is routine Zionist terrorism .

Israel’s renewed assault on Gaza comes several months after both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch issued reports concluding without equivocation that Israel was engaged in genocide. But very few members of Congress dare to acknowledge that reality, while their silence and denials scream out complicity.
In a New York Times interview last weekend, the Senate’s Democratic leader Chuck Schumer put deep moral evasion on display. Among the “slogans” that are used when criticizing Israel, he said, “The one that bothers me the most is genocide. Genocide is described as a country or some group tries to wipe out a whole race of people, a whole nationality of people. So, if Israel was not provoked and just invaded Gaza and shot at random Palestinians, Gazans, that would be genocide. That’s not what happened.”
Schumer is wrong. The international Genocide Convention defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group” — with such actions as killing, “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” and “imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.”
Such actions by Israel have been accompanied by clear evidence of genocidal intent — underscored by hundreds of statements by Israeli leaders and policy shapers. Scarcely three months into the Israeli war on Gaza, scholars Raz Segal and Penny Green pointed out, a database compiled by the Law for Palestine human rights organization “meticulously documents and collates 500 statements that embody the Israeli state’s intention to commit genocide and incitement to genocide since October 7, 2023.”
Those statements “by people with command authority — state leaders, war cabinet ministers and senior army officers — and by other politicians, army officers, journalists and public figures reveal the widespread commitment in Israel to the genocidal destruction of Gaza.”
Since March 2, the United Nations reports, “Israeli authorities have halted the entry of all lifesaving supplies, including food, medicine, fuel and cooking gas, for 2.1 million people.” Now, Israel’s horrendous crusade to destroy Palestinian people in Gaza — using starvation as a weapon of war and inflicting massive bombardment on civilians — has resumed after a two-month ceasefire.
On Tuesday, children were among the more than 400 people killed by Israeli airstrikes, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proclaimed that “this is only the beginning.”
It’s almost impossible to find a Republican in Congress willing to criticize the pivotal U.S. backing for Israel’s methodical killing of civilians. It’s much easier to find GOP lawmakers who sound bloodthirsty.
A growing number of congressional Democrats — still way too few — have expressed opposition. In mid-November, 17 Senate Democrats and two independents voted against offensive arms sales to Israel. But in reality, precious few Democratic legislators really pushed to impede such weapons shipments until after last November’s election. Deference to President Biden was the norm as he actively enabled the genocide to continue.
This week, renewal of Israel’s systematic massacres of Palestinian civilians has hardly sparked a congressional outcry. Silence or platitudes have been the usual.
For “pro-Israel, pro-peace” J Street, the largest and most influential liberal Zionist organization in the United States, evasions have remained along with expressions of anguish. On Tuesday the group’s founder and president, Jeremy Ben-Ami, issued a statement decrying “the decision by Netanyahu to reignite this horrific war” and calling for use of “all possible leverage to pressure each side to restore the ceasefire.” But, as always, J Street did not call for the U.S. government to stop providing the weapons that make the horrific war possible.
That’s where genocide denial comes in. For J Street, as for members of Congress who’ve kept voting to enable the carnage with the massive U.S.-to-Israel weapons pipeline, support for that pipeline requires pretending that genocide isn’t really happening.
While writing an article for The Nation (“Has J Street Gone Along With Genocide?”), I combed through 132 news releases from J Street between early October 2023 and the start of the now-broken ceasefire in late January of this year. I found that on the subject of whether Israel was committing genocide, J Street “aligned itself completely with the position of the U.S. and Israeli governments.”
J Street still maintains the position that it took last May, when the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah. “J Street continues to reject the allegation of genocide in this case,” a news release said.
It would be untenable to publicly acknowledge the reality of Israeli genocide while continuing to support shipping more weaponry for the genocide. That’s why those who claim to be “pro-peace” while supporting more weapons for war must deny the reality of genocide in Gaza.

Israel resumed its genocidal campaign of annihilation in Gaza early Tuesday morning, killing hundreds in a matter of hours, including many children. As of this writing, the death toll from this assault is reportedly at least 413.
Israel is not even pretending that Hamas violated the ceasefire agreement it signed on to in January, saying instead that the decision to resume the onslaught was made because Hamas had been rejecting a significantly altered new agreement put forward by the Trump administration which would have allowed Israel to postpone moving toward a lasting peace.

Hamdan Ballal, the Oscar-winning Palestinian director of No Other Land_, was attacked by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank community of Masafer Yatta, arrested by Israeli soldiers and held overnight. The group entered their village and started the assault shortly after residents broke their daily Ramadan fast. Ballal's _No Other Land co-director Basel Adra witnessed the attack. He tells Democracy Now! that "settlers and soldiers together attacked [Ballal] physically, brutally, and abducted him," while soldiers pointed guns and fired warning shots at a group of villagers including women and children. Ballal screamed "I'm dying" as he was being beaten. "Although the Israeli military has accused Ballal and two other Palestinians of throwing stones at soldiers, another eyewitness, Jewish American peace activist Anna Lippman, says the accusations are groundless. "The double standard is so strong here in the West Bank that Palestinians know that if they were to touch a stone, that could mean their life." Adra calls on international intervention to end the violent occupation of Masafer Yatta, where "almost every day there is [an] attack." Since this interview was conducted, Ballal has reportedly been released from Israeli custody and returned to his family.

On Monday, Israeli strikes killed two Palestinian journalists: Al Jazeera's Hossam Shabat, who was 23 years old, and Palestine Today's Mohammed Mansour, who was killed in his apartment alongside his wife. This brings the total number of journalists that Israel has killed in Gaza over the past year and a half to 206. Just before his death, Shabat had shared news of Mansour's killing on social media and filed an article with Drop Site News describing Israel's scorched-earth campaign in his hometown of Beit Hanoun. His editor Sharif Abdel Kouddous remembers Shabat as a "warm and funny person," dedicated to his job and his community. In recent months, he had been under increasing surveillance by the Israeli military, which labeled him a terrorist and placed him on a "hit list." Despite being "targeted and openly hunted," Shabat "continued nevertheless to cover the genocide of his people."

On Sunday The New York Times ran an opinion piece by a scientist acknowledgin the public was “badly misled” about the origins of COVID-19 — triggering backlash from readers who say the admission comes five years too late.
Zeynep Tufecki, who is a sociology professor at Princeton University, argued that officials and scientists hid facts, misled a Times journalist and colluded on campaigns to bury the possibility of a research lab leak in Wuhan, China.
It has emerged that safety precautions at the Wuhan lab in question “might have been terrifyingly lax,” Tufecki wrote in her column, titled “We Were Badly Misled About the Event That Changed Our Lives.”

An Air Transat Airbus A321-200, registration C-GEZO performing flight TS-880 from London,ON (Canada) to Cancun (Mexico) with 166 people on board, was climbing out of London when the captain indicated he was not feeling well. Later while enroute the captain became incapacitated. The first officer consulted with Medlink and it was decided to continue to destination, where the aircraft landed without further incident.
The Canadian TSB reported: “Later during the flight, the PIC became incapacitated and was unable to continue flying duties. Following a discussion with Medlink, it was decided to continue to destination. The first officer flew the aircraft to destination and aircraft landed without incident.”
The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Cancun for about 17.5 hours before returning to service.
