Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,

The phenomenon of “millennialism” that often accompanies the rise and fall of empires is a historical theme of interest today.

 

The End of the World.

This view evokes images of the entire world collapsing, coming to an abrupt halt, or perhaps the arrival of a mystical charismatic savior who will rescue us from oblivion, or simply another mundane, morbid scenario of slow and painful decay, preceding a premature death.

 

An alternative view is the appearance of a new empire born from the embryo of late capitalism, taking into account the historical short-comings of capitalism in the past, and the evidence of human tolerance for insufferable tyranny, to the point of collective suicides and mass murders: the “death game”, as it has sometimes been called –for a functionalist definition of War.

 

Dialectical Materialism points in another direction.

A more charitable view is that of the “evolution” of capitalism into a prosperous, egalitarian society with equal rights and reduced alienation (where urges to dominate and abuse are considered to be archaic behavior of past capitalist times).

 

The old adage, “history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes,” serves as a fair warning that no one really knows what the future has in store for us, but we can see what we want to avoid.

 

The Shortcomings of Logical Positivism.

Power from above has been pretty much discredited over these past years, by the numerous exposés of bribery, blackmail, attempted “decapitations”, and even efforts by corporate CEOs to reduce the world’s population (by ridding it of “useless eaters”).  “Socialism for the rich” has been proven to be an odious concept, leading us once again onto lost byways of repugnant criminality and unaccountability.

A recent article published in The Hill celebrated the revival of the Monroe Doctrine under Donald Trump by suggesting that U.S. pressure is displacing China from Latin America. But this view misreads both the nature of U.S. influence and the political and economic dynamics shaping the region. What we are seeing is nothing short of coercion by an empire attempting to secure its declining grip on a hemisphere that is increasingly multipolar and pragmatic in its economic policies.

First declared in 1823, the Monroe Doctrine was a U.S. foreign policy statement warning European powers not to interfere in the Western Hemisphere. While it was originally framed as a protective measure against colonialism, it quickly became the ideological foundation for U.S. interventionism in Latin America, justifying dozens of military invasions, covert operations, and regime changes throughout the 20th century. By the end of the century and the Cold War, there was a growing acceptance that the Monroe Doctrine had outlived its usefulness. Trump’s effort to revive this framework, positioning it as a counter to China’s growing presence, reflects not a commitment to democratic values but a strategic attempt to reassert U.S. regional dominance in an increasingly competitive and multipolar landscape.

Trump-era policy in Latin America has relied heavily on economic threats: punitive tariffs, aid suspensions, and sanctions designed to force governments to reduce engagement with China. While these tactics may have discouraged some bilateral deals, they reflect a fundamental weakness in U.S. foreign policy: Washington is no longer able to compete through constructive means, particularly on the economic front. Unlike China, which offers infrastructure projects and development financing aligned with regional priorities, the U.S. offers few viable alternatives. Instead of investing in mutually beneficial partnerships, it defaults to coercion. 

Trump’s approach rests on the assumption that the U.S. can rely on its historical alliances with Latin America’s political and economic elites to counter Chinese influence. But this calculation ignores a key shift: in today’s global economy, ideology matters less than investment and trade.

The idea that Latin America will naturally align with the U.S. because of shared political values or Cold War loyalties no longer holds. Even right-wing governments, supposed allies of Washington, are maintaining and in some cases deepening their ties with Beijing when it benefits their economies.

In Argentina, President Javier Milei ran on a staunch anti-China platform, but economic realities quickly reshaped his position: in 2025, his government extended a critical $5 billion currency swap with China, reflecting how financial necessity often overrides ideological rhetoric. In El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele, despite aligning himself with the U.S., has embraced major Chinese investment, including the construction of a new national stadium and a mega, modern library located in the capital. And in Peru, conservative President Dina Boluarte led a 2024 state visit to China to expand trade and infrastructure cooperation, while Chinese firms completed a massive deepwater port in Chancay, now set to rival Chile’s Valparaíso as a key Pacific trade hub.

None of these cases suggest ideological alignment with Beijing. What they reveal is a clear pattern: governments, regardless of political orientation, respond to who delivers material benefits. And right now, that’s not Washington.

The U.S. continues to rely on and expand its military presence in the region, through bases, training programs, and security agreements, believing this will suffice to retain influence. After all, China doesn’t project military power in the hemisphere.

But Latin America’s future is not being decided through troop movements or defense pacts; it’s being built through ports, railways, energy grids, and trade routes. You can’t contain economic transformation with military hardware.

Panama is one of the few places where Trump’s coercive approach yielded a visible outcome. But it is also a case that underscores why the strategy is hard to replicate. After falsely claiming China was “operating” the canal and threatening to “take it back”, Washington pushed Panama to scrutinize Chinese-linked port operations, culminating in their sale to a U.S.-led consortium. Yet Panama is a small, highly trade-dependent country with a long history of U.S. intervention; its strategic and economic reliance on Washington made compliance more likely. That very dependency, however, is not the norm across Latin America, where larger economies with diversified partnerships are far less susceptible to U.S. pressure.

“The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Moderna to issue warnings that their Covid mRNA “vaccines” [August 2025] carry a high risk of heart damage, particularly for young men.

The new guidance highlights the deadly risk of myocarditis from mRNA injections.”(Frank Bergman, see article below)

That deadly risk was known to the FDA and the CDC from the very outset. They failed to act. The mRNA vaccine was fully endorsed and imposed, nationally and internationally.

The Pfizer mRNA vaccine was launched in mid-December 2020.

Pfizer had commissioned a Confidential Classified study focusing on the impacts of its vaccine over a period of two and a half months (from mid-December 2020 to the End of February 2021). That report –which was subsequently made public in October 2021 under Freedom of Information (FOI)—confirmed the. deadly nature of the mRNA injection (mortality and morbidity)

That Pfizer report was available to the FDA in early March 2021.

By the end of February 2021:

“Pfizer had already received more than 1,200 reports of deaths allegedly caused by the vaccine and tens of thousands of reported adverse events, including 23 cases of spontaneous abortions out of 270 pregnancies and more than 2,000 reports of cardiac disorders.”

Our Op-Ed exposed apparent cases of SIDS that were actually caused by childhood vaccines. It was published in a highly read news outlet... in New York City.

 

As many of my readers know, I have published over thirty Op-Eds in major media outlets over the past 4 years, with quite a few on “controversial” health topics related to Covid. However, the vast majority were in right-wing or center-right publications.

 

The first Op-Ed I ever published was early in the pandemic, in USA Today (July 1, 2020), where I tried to alert the world that Covid was aerosol (not droplet) transmitted, something the CDC and WHO took another 1 and 2 years to officially recognize, respectively.

Some other left-wing exceptions were Op-Eds I wrote with the veteran investigative journalist Mary Beth Pfeiffer; Newsweek (spikes in death and disability), The Hill (alarming rates of young people dying, and USA Today (Covid vaccine injuries and explosions in excess mortality in the U.S).

 

However, in those those Op-Eds, we were rarely able to make explicit links between the epidemiological catastrophes and Covid vaccines—the references were either subtle or omitted altogether—the notable exception was the Op-Ed published in The Hill, where we specifically identified Covid vaccines as a possible factor in the surge of sudden deaths among young Americans, illustrated in the following paragraph:

    Vaccines were given to more than 270 million people, among them babies, pregnant women and workers under employer mandates. The therapeutic’s “warp speed,” emergency use authorization must be part of any post-pandemic analysis, in light of more than 1 million reports of possible harm to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System and a new Yale University study validating a chronic post-vaccination syndrome.

However, to date, we have never ventured into exploring the topic of the deadly harms of traditional childhood vaccines, a topic that would typically guarantee career suicide. Since my academic career has already been suicided, and Mary Beth has long left corporate media, we were free to venture.

Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society addresses on some concerning comments Harari has made on camera.  He says that governments use emergency threats to control people, and while saying terror is a small threat, and politicians should address climate change which could kill millions. Stirling disputes that humans drive catastrophic climate change and suggests he consult with Dr. Nir Shaviv about how the Sun drives climate. Governments should not use an alleged climate emergency to control people. Likewise, she expresses concern that the World Economic Forum (WEF) celebrated lockdowns, despite them destroying the lives of millions of people.  Harari has also commented on how 'useless eaters' will just take up resources as Artificial Intelligence and Robots take over work in the world. Stirling points out that this kind of thinking led to the horrific public policies of eugenics and euthanasia that were public policy in Germany before the Holocaust/Shoah genocidal massacre focussed on the Jews, along with others deemed unfit to survive. It is deeply concerning that there is a depopulationist element that is significant in the climate change movement.  People like Jane Goodall who believe the earth's population should only be 500 million. These are dangerous thoughts in dangerous times.

“Putin will NEVER meet with Zelensky”

The discussion centers on the implausibility and strategic dysfunction surrounding the proposed Trump–Putin summit and the broader conflict dynamics involving Ukraine. Key themes include:

🔴 U.S. Ownership of the War Biden is deeply involved in the Ukraine war, supplying weapons, intelligence, and support—thus, he "owns" the war. Critics argue he should stop deflecting blame onto his predecessor (Trump) and accept responsibility as commander-in-chief.

🟡 Putin–Zelensky–Trump Meeting? Highly Unlikely Despite Trump suggesting a trilateral summit (with Zelensky joining him and Putin), the prospect is highly improbable: Russia considers Zelensky illegitimate (term expired, no elections). Putin will not agree unless Zelensky is already prepared to accept Russia’s demands—a scenario seen as extremely unlikely. Zelensky’s motivation: He wants a media spectacle to reframe himself as a global hero, which Russia sees as political theater, not diplomacy.

🔵 Internal Pressures on Zelensky Zelensky cannot make significant concessions without risking a mutiny or backlash from Ukrainian hardliners and nationalists. His government is seen as out of mandate, fragile, and threatened from within. Russia is well aware of this and sees direct negotiations with him as a waste of time.

⚪ Critique of Trump’s Role Analysts argue Trump lacks understanding of the war's context, history, and stakes. Meeting Putin without a substantive grasp of the conflict could be meaningless. There’s no new U.S. diplomatic position or detail to suggest this is a turning point.

🔶 U.S. and Allies’ Strategy: Leverage Through Pressure Figures like Mike Gallagher and Lindsey Graham frame Trump's position as strong, claiming: Threats of sanctions and military deployments (like nuclear subs) gave Trump negotiating power. Gallagher claims Putin "blinked" due to these pressures. Analysts dispute this narrative, arguing: Russia isn’t conceding due to U.S. threats. Leverage-based approaches have failed repeatedly and reflect a flawed understanding of Russia’s position and resilience.

⚫ The Flawed U.S. Playbook U.S. hardliners (and some European allies like the UK) cling to outdated Cold War strategies: Relying on sanctions, military posturing, and time to "break" Russia. Believing that economic and military pressure alone can bring Moscow to its knees. These policies ignore: Russia’s strategic patience and internal unity. Global shifts in oil trade (e.g., India reselling Russian oil). The ineffectiveness of sanctions and the potential for backlash (e.g., targeting India and China with secondary sanctions).

🔺 Conclusion: No Breakthrough, Just Stagnation Without new U.S. policy direction or understanding, the situation is set to stagnate. Analysts predict the same cycles repeating into 2026 or beyond, with little progress. Current approaches are seen as performative, disconnected from geopolitical and military realities, and ultimately ineffective at resolving the conflict.

The Coalition's most recent attempt ended on July 26, when Israeli pirates seized the Handala in international waters. The Handala carried humanitarian aid for Gaza, as well as twenty-one human rights activists. One of those activists, Christian Smalls, experienced particularly violent treatment at the hands of his Israeli captors. Christian, who was the only Black person on the Handala, is the founder of the Amazon Labor Union, the first independent, democratic, worker-led labor union in American history.

Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Christian about his experiences in Israeli captivity. They also discussed the need for U.S. labor unions to do much more for the Palestinian cause.

Les chiffres sont éloquents et montrent à quel point il y a nécessité d'un réel contrôle des aides attribuées.
Comme le révèlent un économiste et un journaliste dans une tribune publiée dans le journal Le Monde le 30 novembre 2020, « 100 % des multinationales du CAC 40 ont touché des aides publiques liées au Covid-19 ». Or, et de manière scandaleuse et éhontée, il apparaît que 26 entreprises du CAC 40 ont malgré tout versé des dividendes conséquents à leurs actionnaires pour un total de 30,3 milliards d'euros. Pour certaines, l'État est actionnaire ; un comble qui renie d'ailleurs l'engagement du Gouvernement. Notons que 8 entreprises ont même augmenté le montant des dividendes versés. De plus, 14 d'entre elles ont profité du chômage partiel pour rémunérer leurs salariés. Comme Carrefour qui a placé 90 000 de ses 110 000 salariés au chômage partiel, payés sur fonds publics, alors que 183 millions d'euros ont été versés dans le même temps à ses actionnaires.
Voilà comment s'accaparer les aides publiques aux fins d'intérêts financiers privés et ce, en toute impunité !
Pire, certaines entreprises licencient, sans aucun scrupule, à l'image de Total et de Sanofi. Écœurant !
Alors, face à ces dérives, comment peut-il se concevoir qu'encore aujourd'hui les aides publiques puissent être versées sans aucune contrepartie ?
Tout cela s'inscrit dans une pernicieuse logique qui dure depuis bien trop longtemps. Comme l'énoncent les auteurs de la tribune du Monde, les aides publiques versées aux entreprises privées ne représentaient que 65 milliards d'euros par an avant la crise de 2008. En 2012, ce montant est passé à 110 milliards d'euros, puis à 150 milliards d'euros par an à la suite de la mise en place du pacte de responsabilité et du crédit d'impôt pour la compétitivité et l'emploi (CICE). Avec la pandémie, les sommes versées sont encore plus importantes.
Et pour autant, le chômage et les faillites d'entreprises continuent à s'accélérer. Tout cela est d'ailleurs à mettre en parallèle aux 0,8 % du plan de relance consacré à la lutte contre la pauvreté et au fait que les aides publiques au secteur privé dépassent aujourd'hui le montant des aides sociales (138 milliards d'euros).
On voit bien là toutes les limites des aides attribuées dont la logique s'apparente même parfois à du détournement de fonds publics.
C'est pourquoi, il lui demande si le Gouvernement entend enfin fixer des critères stricts et sincères d'attributions des aides publiques aux entreprises et avec quelles contreparties exigées.

The Department of Defense is planning to create a rapid response force of National Guard troops to quickly deploy to American cities where protests or unrest are occurring.

On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported that it obtained documents showing the Pentagon is creating a “Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force.”

“The plan calls for 600 troops to be on standby at all times so they can deploy in as little as one hour,” the outlet explained. “They would be split into two groups of 300 and stationed at military bases in Alabama and Arizona, with purview of regions east and west of the Mississippi River, respectively.”

One hundred troops at each base would be on standby to deploy within an hour, while the entire quick force would begin operations within 12 hours. The National Guard will be equipped with weapons and riot gear, and the deployments will be limited to 90 days to prevent burnout among the troops.

On Monday, Trump announced a major crackdown on crime in Washington, DC, by federalizing the Metropolitan DC police and deploying 800 National Guard troops to the capital city. “This is Liberation Day in DC, and we’re going to take our capital back,” Trump said during a press conference at the White House. “I’m officially invoking the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. And placing the DC Metropolitan Police under direct federal control.”

“In addition, I’m deploying the National Guard to help restore law, order and public safety,” he added.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said residents of DC will soon see the National Guard in the capital. “You will see them flowing into the streets of Washington in the coming week,” he explained. “At your direction as well, sir, there are other units we are prepared to bring in — other National Guard units, other specialized units. They will be strong, they will be tough and they will stand with their law enforcement partners.”

The new quick reaction force may be deployed to other American cities if Trump perceives that there is too much crime. Trump threatened to take similar steps in other major cities, noting he hopes some of them “self-clean up.” “If we need to, we’re going to do the same thing in Chicago, which is a disaster,” the president said.

The planned force could face legal barriers as it attempts to deploy to American cities. Many Democratic led-cities may object to a Republican President deploying troops. Additionally, federal law limits the National Guard’s ability to conduct law enforcement within the US.

There’s a curious psychological phenomenon playing out in American politics, and it’s not new,  but it has become dangerously exaggerated in the era of Donald J. Trump. It’s what happens when a voter, like a consumer who’s just driven off the lot in a shiny new car, realizes the vehicle they bought is a lemon. It sputters, leaks oil, the brakes fail and the salesman — so confident and charismatic during the sale — won’t return their calls. Yet instead of returning it under the lemon law or admitting regret, the buyer polishes the bumper, cranks up the radio to drown out the noise, and insists to anyone who’ll listen that the car runs just fine.

So it is with Trump’s base. After six months of his second — and deeply embattled — term, he’s delivered not a slate of achievements but a fleet of scandals. He didn’t end the wars in Ukraine or the Middle East. Inflation still bites at the grocery store. The border wall stands as a monument to bluster, with no pesos from Mexico to pay for it. And rather than draining the swamp, he’s hawking $60 Bibles printed in China, touting them as spiritual souvenirs of a campaign fueled by grievance.

This is not a partisan gripe. It’s a lament for a country in cognitive dissonance.

What we’re witnessing is not a case of buyers’ remorse but buyers’ denial, rooted in the fear of being wrong, of being made a fool. Trump’s supporters were sold a product — a disruptive outsider, a dealmaker, a man who would stand up for the “forgotten.” But six months in, that product has failed spectacularly. Rather than confront the mounting evidence of corruption, cruelty and incompetence, many have doubled down, clutching to their Trump-branded merchandise — literal and metaphorical — as if it were a shield against shame.

And shame, as a motivator, may be more powerful to some than truth.

The signs are all there: 34 felony convictions, a civil jury of his own peers finding him liable for sexual assault, documented admiration for authoritarians, a White House turned into a bizarre showroom for $TRUMP meme coins and Elon Musk’s Tesla vehicles, and the normalization of cruelty — especially through agencies like ICE, now more empowered than ever to go after “the least of us.”

Trump makes a mockery of institutions, cuts aid to the needy, bullies dissenters and governs as if the only loyalty that matters is to himself. He’s as interested in the rule of law as he is in reading the Constitution — something I doubt he’s ever done or the least bit interested in doing. And yet, many Americans cling to him not because they believe he is great, but because it appears that admitting they were wrong feels worse than enduring the consequences of being right.

I grew up in a small town in Ohio, the son of a preacher, where people took immense pride in their purchases — cars, tractors, houses, politicians. But there was also a quiet and modest wisdom: if the machine doesn’t work, you trade it in. It takes humility to say, I was sold a bill of goods. I made a bad deal. I want something better.

But Trumpism isn’t just a political stance anymore. For some, it’s a religious devotion — especially among white evangelicals who call him an “imperfect vessel” sent by God. That vessel, mind you, once bragged about grabbing women “by the pussy,” walking in on naked teenage pageant contestants and mocking a disabled New York Times reporter while telling the world that he, Trump, and he alone, could fix all our problems. Meanwhile, he’s hawking sacred texts while funneling political loyalty through more than $1 million per seat on average for a dinner party at the White House, reserved for top-tier investors in Trump’s cryptocurrency token.

Six months into Donald Trump’s second term, the numbers tell a story even his bravado can’t shout down: the façade is cracking. His job approval has plunged to 37%, the lowest point of this term and only a hair above the ignominy of his all-time worst at the end of his first presidency. The most damning shift comes from independents — the pragmatic middle that decides elections — where his support has collapsed by 17 points to a paltry 29%, matching its lowest ebb in either term.

These are not just statistics; they are warning flares. Americans, particularly those who once suspended disbelief, seem to be waking up to the chaos fatigue, to broken promises and corrosive leadership. Trump once promised to remake Washington; instead, he’s remade disappointment.

Right, so If you want to know who’s actually trying to stop the slaughter in Gaza, don’t waste your time squinting at the photo-ops from summits or parsing the careful euphemisms of “deep concern” from Western foreign ministries. Look to the quaysides. Look to the men and women in hi-vis vests, not tailored suits, who can smell a weapons shipment before the ink is dry on the shipping manifest and who don’t need a UN resolution to tell them it’s wrong to help send it.

In Genoa this past week, they didn’t just hold placards for the cameras. They boarded a Saudi-owned ship, the Bahri Yanbu, stuffed with military cargo — some of it made right there in Italy — destined, via the usual webs of plausible deniability, to fuel Israel’s war on Gaza. They documented it, made it public, and refused to lift a finger to move it, as their fellow dockworkers in France, or Spain, or Morocco or Greece have done before them, the dissent growing around the Mediterranean against touching the tools of genocide. Meanwhile, Giorgia Meloni’s government, so fond of voicing “concerns” over civilian casualties, was busy making arms exports easier, not harder. So it fell to the dockers to enforce the very laws their leaders were gutting, to take the kind of action that can actually choke a war machine. And they did it without the theatrics of summitry or the moral cowardice of “both sides” diplomacy — just a simple, defiant, working-class “no.”

Right, so in the half-light of early morning on 7 August, the quayside at Genoa’s Ponte Etiopia looked like any other workday. Forklifts and cranes stood ready, ships lay berthed, and the usual hum of activity was beginning to stir. But that morning, the rhythms of commerce were broken by the purposeful arrival of a different kind of shift. Forty dockworkers, many wearing the red vests of Italy’s trade union federation USB and carrying the flags of the Collettivo Autonomo Lavoratori Portuali (CALP), another Italian trade union, marched towards a hulking roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel: the Bahri Yanbu.

In a phone message recorded in June from a high-security prison in Germany, Dr. Reiner Fuellmich calmly explained that most of the “chaos” we see in the world right now is an “illusion” to keep us in “panic mode.”

Now, if anybody had a right to panic, it would be Fuellmich, a lawyer who headed up the German Coronavirus Investigative Committee. He’s been in prison now for over 19 months for exposing the COVID-19 fraud.

Under German law, prisoners can only be held for six months and then must go to trial. Instead, Fuellmich spent six months enduring “white torture” — solitary confinement in a white cell. He explains that the wardens said this was necessary because he was talking to Muslim inmates. Fuellmich comments that this fabricated violation is hard to avoid in German jails, as most of the prisoners are Muslim.

His daily one-hour walk in the yard has also been suspended multiple times as punishment for simply waving at one of his Muslim inmates.

In addition to white torture, Fuellmich told his lawyer that he has witnessed “a lot of strange medical and psychological experiments going on that kill and maim prisoners.”

When not in his cell, Fuellmich is treated like one of the most dangerous men alive. He says that his guard, “ties a wide leather belt around my waist and then puts on handcuffs that are attached to the belt with chains, which in turn are secured with a large padlock.”

What was Fuellmich’s crime?

Officially, he was charged with failing to pay back an illegal loan and breaking a “secret agreement.” Unofficially, his only offence was gathering evidence from expert witnesses around the world showing how the COVID-19 scamdemic was, as he says, the “greatest crime in the history of humanity.”

In a statement to BAM! News, Fuellmich observed that he was not the only full accused prisoner being detained:

[Translated from French] I have not met a single accused person whom I would call “evil.” I have met many, really many pre-trial detainees who seem innocent to me, or who, above all, need therapeutic treatment — as even a prison doctor admitted. If we no longer needed a few prisons for a handful of sociopaths — for example, those responsible for the pandemic, wars, massacres like those in Gaza, and the corruption in the system — I would support abolishing prisons.

Fuellmich has also missed the death and funeral of his mother. He is allowed only three hours a month of visits or phone calls with family. And his wife has fled the tyranny of Germany for an undisclosed location in the Wild West of Mexico.

Despite all those hardships, Fuellmich made this bold proclamation in his most recent phone message from prison: Your browser does not support the audio element.

I’m still standing. Nothing will change that because I am convinced that in all this chaos that seems to be consuming this planet, we, and I in particular, need to stay calm and focused, and realize that all this chaos is staged and just an illusion to put us in panic mode. This is psychological warfare. I’ve said this many times before. We, the humans, the real humans, on this side of the fence, know and sense this, and we need to take responsibility for our own lives very, very soon, as the crash is now imminent. It will be up to us to bring the monsters to justice. And that we will do. We can and must do it, I believe.

One of the most stark examples of the expanding tide of authoritarianism worldwide was the 2017 murder of Gauri Lankesh, an Indian journalist and activist, allegedly assassinated by a far-right religious group in India for her fearless journalism.

Joining host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report is Rollo Romig, a journalist whose Pulitzer Prize-finalist book, I Am On the Hit List: A Journalist’s Murder and the Ruse of Autocracy in India, examines the historic and political context of Lankesh’s murder.

Romig chronicles the rise of Hindu nationalist extremism in India, linking it to India’s current authoritarian policies under Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The group accused of Lankesh’s assassination, Sanatan Sanstha, operates on the vision “of making India an officially Hindu country and, equally importantly, relegating all non-Hindus to second-class citizenship and ostracizing, particularly, Muslims from Hindu society,” according to Romig.

Much like in the United States, Romig and Hedges argue that such fringe groups serve a strategic purpose of mainstreaming extremist ideologies that ultimately benefit the ruling class. Gauri’s work represented a threat to far-right political movements in India and she was often subjected to fierce intimidation campaigns, including, as the title of Romig’s book suggests, being placed on murder hit lists.
