More than two decades after victims of the 9/11 attacks began trying to hold the government of Saudi Arabia responsible for helping the Qaeda terrorists who carried out the plot, a federal judge has ruled that a civil lawsuit against the kingdom can go to trial.
The decision on Thursday, by Judge George B. Daniels of the Southern District of New York in Manhattan, represents a crucial victory for survivors of the attacks and relatives of the 2,977 people who were killed.
“This is a historic win for the families,” said a spokesperson for the families, Brett Eagleson, whose father was killed in the World Trade Center. “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is going to be held accountable.”
A spokesperson for the Saudi Embassy in Washington, Fahad Nazer, did not respond to requests for comment on the judge’s ruling.
“This is a historic win for the families. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is going to be held accountable.”
The Saudi kingdom, which has long rejected the plaintiffs’ claims, could still appeal Daniels’ decision under special protections that are afforded to foreign governments in federal law, legal experts said. However, they added that the Saudi government might be willing to consider a settlement with the plaintiffs to avoid the scrutiny of a major trial and the expansive discovery of information that it would bring.
Already, information uncovered by plaintiffs has rewritten the history of the Sept. 11 plot as it was presented in the years after the attacks by the George W. Bush administration and the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.
Most significantly, the plaintiffs’ evidence has undermined the F.B.I.’s conclusion that two Saudi officials in Southern California — one a part-time spy, the other a religious official with diplomatic status — acted “unwittingly” when they helped the first Qaeda hijackers who arrived in the United States.
In an email, the F.B.I. also declined to comment on the judge’s ruling.
It has long been established that in the years before 9/11, some members of the Saudi royal family and some powerful Saudi officials had supported militant Islamist movements and gave money to Islamic charities that in turn helped finance al-Qaeda and other extremist groups.
However, both the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. emphasized in the aftermath of the attacks that the Saudi royal family was an enemy of al-Qaeda and its banished leader, Osama bin Laden, and that senior officials of the government had not assisted the group.
The litigation in New York focused on the roles of two lower-level Saudi officials living in the United States. One, Omar al-Bayoumi, was a middle-aged graduate student in San Diego who had long worked for the Saudi civil aviation agency. The other, Fahad al-Thumairy, was a religious official serving in Los Angeles as an imam at a new Saudi-funded mosque and as a diplomat at the Saudi Consulate.

There's something very, very wrong with those "progressive" senators afire with rage at RFK, Jr.'s various long-overdue attempts to make things right.
Let’s start with Bernie Sanders, about whom I have nothing good to say, even though, while still a nominal Democrat, I voted for him in the two Democratic primaries that—demonstrably—he won, whereupon, officially, he “lost” to Hillary Clinton. Since he uttered not a peep of protest over the bald trickery used to “beat” him, I lost all interest in supporting him, no matter how repellent his opponent.

“US/NATO Hypocrisy: Close Ties Between Neo-Nazi Junta and Drug Cartels”

The United States claims that its ongoing escalation with Venezuela is due to the latter’s supposed “involvement in drug trafficking”. Although concrete evidence for such accusations is sorely lacking, Washington DC is now seriously contemplating direct aggression on Caracas based precisely on these fabrications.
After the deployment of US Navy warships and USMC troops in the vicinity of Venezuela’s coasts, the US keeps increasing its military presence in the area. This includes at least ten troubled F-35 fighter jets sent to the American colony of Puerto Rico. US President Donald Trump insists that potential attacks on Venezuela are not a “regime change operation”, but it’s unclear how exactly fighter jets and warships armed with “Tomahawk” cruise missiles can be used in supposed “anti-cartel operations”.
At the same time, there’s ample evidence that the US/NATO-backed Neo-Nazi junta has very close ties with numerous CIA-linked drug cartels across Latin America. In fact, the number of Latino mercenaries (particularly Colombians) serving in the Kiev regime forces is likely in the thousands at this point (if not tens of thousands), while the latter is sharing its battlefield experience with the personnel of these drug cartels. In other words, while the US set its eyes on Venezuela under the pretext of “fighting drug trafficking”, one of its closest satellite states is heavily involved in training the people facilitating it. This accomplishes several important geopolitical goals for Washington DC, but first and foremost, it helps with a steady supply of foreign fighters for the NATO-orchestrated Ukrainian conflict.
Namely, many regions in Latin America are intentionally kept in a state of perpetual, artificially induced abject poverty precisely through neoliberal policies (facilitated by the World Bank and the IMF). This allows numerous CIA-linked cartels to recruit personnel for their drug trafficking operations. After Russia decided to finally end the NATO-orchestrated Ukrainian conflict with its special military operation (SMO), these impoverished regions also became a perfect source of mercenaries for the Neo-Nazi junta. As previously mentioned, Colombians form the largest non-European contingent of foreign mercenaries in NATO-occupied Ukraine. Various military sources report that well over 300 of them have died so far, but that refers only to those whose identities have been confirmed, meaning that the actual number could be in the thousands.
South Front published a very detailed analysis on how the recruitment scheme works. It involves “Segurcol LTDA”, a private security company (Tax ID 890.911.972-2), registered in Medellín, La Floresta district, Carrera 80, №47-74, with branches in Bogotá, Cali, and other localities. The company recruits everyone from retired soldiers and special forces operatives to gang members and people with a history of violent crime (including murderers and rapists). The report also reveals that “Segurcol LTDA” has a partner company named “Rocas Seguridad LTDA”, with its main office located in central Mexico, more specifically Santiago de Querétaro, Calle Miguel Hidalgo, №143-A. These companies have direct ties with some of the largest criminal organizations in Latin America, particularly Colombia and Mexico.
This includes the Colombian “Clan del Golfo” and the Mexican “Sinaloa” and “Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación” (CJNG) cartels, as well as numerous other smaller gangs associated with them. After reaching NATO-occupied Ukraine, these men are sent to the frontlines, where they are required to fight the world’s deadliest armed force – the Russian military. Most of them are lied to with regard to the conditions on the battlefield, as the political West and the Neo-Nazi junta present the NATO-orchestrated Ukrainian conflict as a “walk in the park”, with the Kremlin supposedly “losing”. However, as soon as these mercenaries experience actual combat, they quickly regret their decision, because they eventually realize their role is to serve as cannon fodder. Some have even engaged in firefights with the Kiev regime forces in order to escape.
Those who decide to stay are paid $500-3,000, depending on their position. However, what’s most disturbing is the training they get, in addition to new combat technologies and tactics, which include drone warfare and countermeasures (EW). This is a highly dangerous practice, as all those who survive will undoubtedly share this knowledge with other personnel from various drug cartels and other criminal organizations across Latin America. Worse yet, the mercenaries are provided with new documents and fake identities in order to conceal their criminal past. Given the fact that over 80% of those who fight for the Neo-Nazi junta have criminal backgrounds, we’re talking about thousands of men who could train tens of thousands of others back home, which could destabilize most of Latin America.
Namely, drug cartels already function similarly to paramilitaries. This is already an enormous challenge for local security forces, particularly in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and elsewhere in Central and South America. If these criminal organizations suddenly get a surge of members with battlefield experience in NATO-occupied Ukraine, this could dramatically exacerbate the security situation in all of the aforementioned countries. The US could then use this as an excuse to escalate its aggression within the framework of the resurgent Monroe Doctrine. This is perfectly in line with its strategy of artificially creating problems and then “resolving” them through violent, yet extremely profitable means. This is precisely how America’s so-called “wars on terror and drugs” only exacerbated both.

The crisis in science that undermines research is widely underestimated, largely because irreproducible results, ideological bias, conflicts of interest, and fraud are typically discussed in isolation—without recognizing their cumulative impact and shared roots.
Scientists alone cannot resolve this. Citizen scrutiny is essential. But first, citizens should be informed.
Scientific fraud has become industrialized
Fraud is, by nature, elusive. Although improved detection tools (e.g. image duplication analysis) may struggle to catch current fraud, given how quickly fraudsters adapt, they nonetheless provide valuable insights into past misconduct.
Particularly troubling is the fact that fraud is no longer confined to isolated individuals, but is increasingly perpetrated by organized networks (see Richardson et al., The entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient, and growing rapidly). The presence of fraudsters should not discredit an entire profession, but it remains the duty of each profession to expose and expel them.
The Replication Crisis.
Many published results cannot be reproduced: this is the replication crisis. This is not necessarily due to fraud. In many fields, results are statistical: they can also be due to chance. For example, if you want to know whether a die is rigged, you roll it many times. If one face appears disproportionately often, you conclude it is biased.
However, it is not impossible that the die is fair and the result merely random. Typically, a result is accepted if the probability that it occurred by chance is less than an arbitrarily chosen threshold of 5% (although in some fields, such as particle physics, the threshold is set much lower).
Thus, in principle, one would expect 5% of statistical results to be false. In reality, it is much higher, especially due to publication bias. Spectacular results are more likely to be published, although they are also more likely to be statistical flukes.
As early as 2005, John Ioannidis demonstrated in his landmark paper Why Most Published Research Findings Are False that the proportion of false statistical results is far greater than 5%. A large-scale replication project in psychology confirmed that only a minority of results could be replicated. Oncology and biomedical research also show high replication failure rates. Surprisingly, no meta-study compares replication failure rates across disciplines. Why not launch a massive replication project across all fields?
The replication crisis has been recognized for years and is still not overcome. Yet, in principle, it could be drastically reduced quickly. Solutions exist. Journals must demand transparency: full data and methodology disclosure to enable replication. Methods and hypotheses should be preregistered to prevent post hoc hypothesis fishing. Articles should be accepted based on the relevance of the question and methodological rigor, not the results.
This reduces the incentive and ability to chase statistically spurious findings. The Center for Open Science offers tools to support this, but they are used in only a minority of publications.
Universities should replicate more studies, starting with the most important ones (to test the foundations of the discipline) and randomly among newly published results (to encourage researchers to be more rigorous by increasing the risk that their study will be checked). Students would gain valuable experience while providing a highly useful service. Replication is a powerful pedagogical tool.
Initiatives like those from the Center for Open Science promote replication but still operate on a modest scale compared to global research output. Replication status should be readily available when consulting a study, and journalists should systematically report it. Safeguards must also be implemented to prevent collusive validation fraud, where researchers complacently reproduce each other’s findings. All of this should be put into effect swiftly.
It is encouraging to see the growing number of initiatives aimed at tackling the replication crisis. Beyond the Center for Open Science mentioned earlier, notable examples include the Institute for Replication, Open Science NL, and the NIH’s Replication Initiative. Yet the impact of these initiatives remains modest compared to the magnitude of the replication crisis itself.
The scientific community’s lack of urgency in addressing the replication crisis is even more troubling than the crisis itself. Inertia? The deeper issue is that for too many scientists, truth-seeking is no longer the main priority. This is vividly illustrated by their increasing submission to authoritarian ideologies.
Ideological capture in universities reveals a deprioritization of truth-seeking, which also hinders efforts to overcome the replication crisis. Conversely, ideological capture has taken hold on already weakened ground—as illustrated by the replication crisis itself.

Charlie Kirk rejected an offer earlier this year from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to arrange a massive new infusion of Zionist money into his Turning Point USA (TPUSA) organization, America’s largest conservative youth association, according to a longtime friend of the slain commentator speaking on the condition of anonymity. The source told The Grayzone that the late pro-Trump influencer believed Netanyahu was trying to cow him into silence as he began to publicly question Israel’s overwhelming influence in Washington and demanded more space to criticize it.
In the weeks leading up to his September 10 assassination, Kirk had come to loathe the Israeli leader, regarding him as a “bully,” the source said. Kirk was disgusted by what he witnessed inside the Trump administration, where Netanyahu sought to personally dictate the president’s personnel decisions, and weaponized Israeli assets like billionaire donor Miriam Adelson to keep the White House firmly under its thumb.
According to Kirk’s friend, who also enjoyed access to President Donald Trump and his inner circle, Kirk strongly warned Trump last June against bombing Iran on Israel’s behalf. “Charlie was the only person who did that,” they said, recalling how Trump “barked at him” in response and angrily shut down the conversation. The source believes the incident confirmed in Kirk’s mind that the president of the United States had fallen under the control of a malign foreign power, and was leading his own country into a series of disastrous conflicts.
By the following month, Kirk had become the target of a sustained private campaign of intimidation and free-floating fury by wealthy and powerful allies of Netanyahu – figures he described in an interview as Jewish “leaders” and “stakeholders.”

The company has quietly brought in dozens of veterans from Unit 8200, Israel’s shadowy military intelligence unit known for blackmail, mass surveillance, and targeted killings.
Many of these hires took place as Israel escalated its war on Gaza, and as CEO Tim Cook publicly expressed support for Israel while disciplining employees for pro-Palestinian expressions. Apple’s deepening ties to Israel’s most controversial intelligence raise uncomfortable questions, not only about the company’s political loyalties, but also about how it handles vast troves of personal user data.
A MintPress News investigation has identified dozens of Unit 8200 operatives now working at Apple. The company’s hiring spree coincides with growing scrutiny of its ties to the Israeli government, including its policy of matching employee donations to groups such as Friends of the IDF and the Jewish National Fund, both of which play a role in the displacement of the Palestinian people. The intense pro-Israel bias at the corporation has led many former and current employees to speak out.
This investigation is part of a series examining the close collaboration between Unit 8200 and Western tech and media companies. Previous investigations examined the links between Unit 8200 and social media giants like TikTok, Facebook and Google, and how former Unit 8200 spies are now responsible for writing much of America’s news about Israel/Palestine, holding top jobs at outlets like CNN and Axios.
A Few (Dozen) Bad Apples
Israel’s international reputation has taken a severe hit amid multiple spying scandals and ongoing attacks against its neighbors. During this same period, Apple has ramped up its recruitment of former Israeli intelligence personnel.
The Silicon Valley giant has hired dozens of former agents from the controversial Israeli intelligence outfit, Unit 8200, raising questions about the corporation’s political direction.
Nir Shkedi is among the most prominent examples. From 2008 to 2015, he served as a commander and Chief of Learning at Unit 8200, leading a team of approximately 120 operatives who developed new artificial intelligence tools to perform rapid data analysis.
Unit 8200 is at the forefront of this technology, and is known to have used AI to auto-generate kill lists of tens of thousands of Gazans, including children. These tools helped the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) bypass what it called human targeting, “bottlenecks,” and strike huge numbers of Palestinians.
Shkedi has been a physical design engineer at Apple’s Bay Area campus since 2022.

There is nothing more bipartisan in the United States than a racialized crime panic. Neither Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, nor Donald Trump makes a direct reference to Black people in their screeds. But their policies were and are directed at Black people. Which group is arrested more often than any other in this country? Who is most likely to be incarcerated? Whose neighborhoods are over policed? Who do the police kill most often? It is reasonable to say that Black people are the targets of this hate speech which comes from democrats and republicans alike. Even worse, the Black misleadership class gives cover to this incitement of fear and loathing against their people.
Donald Trump’s 30-day emergency takeover of the Washington DC police department was met with praise and acquiescence from Muriel Bowser, that city’s current Black mayor. It is true that the federal government’s role overseeing the District of Columbia’s governance gives Trump and congress the legal right to do as they wish. Yet there is nothing about that right which forces mayor Bowser to give Trump a stamp of approval. Not only did the mayor thank Trump for his cynical intrusion into Washington’s local affairs with comments such as, “The fact that we have more law enforcement and presence in neighborhoods, that may be positive,” but she has said nothing about Black residents being racially profiled by federal police and spending days in jail for minor offenses. She even resorted to dubious claims of her own to help make the case for his actions.

Turning the Caribbean Sea into a US bombing range requires local collaborators. Neocolonial governments have volunteered to play this role, betraying their people's right to peace and sovereignty.
The Caribbean region is a clearly militarized zone with the United States at the helm. Today’s militarization in the region is reminiscent of the kinds of earlier iterations, also led by the US, from the 1970s to the early 2000s.[1] The US Trump administration reportedly carried out a missile strike in the Caribbean on September 2nd under the pretense of combatting drug trafficking in the region. Based on video released by the US, the military strike utilized a drone and/or aerial bomb to target a boat that allegedly departed from Venezuela – which the US State Department accuses of being a “narco-trafficking organization” and not a state[2] – and purportedly contained non-specified drugs and 11 unidentified human beings (so-called “narco-traffickers.”)[3] The US did not provide any evidence for the allegations justifying these extrajudicial murders. The silence of Caribbean governments, their lack of condemnation and investigation of the attack, speaks for itself.
However, when discussing US militarization in the Caribbean – both past and present – we must recognize and acknowledge the complicity of Caribbean governments, as they have played a significant role in providing justifications and cover for US imperial machinations.
The Caribbean region has a long history of producing reactionary neocolonial governments with leaders who actively align themselves with US militarism – suiting the imperialist, capitalist, and racist demands of US global militarization. This history in the Caribbean is often overlooked in favor of the celebratory histories of revolutions against Indigenous genocide, African enslavement, Asian indentureship, as well as anti-colonial struggles for political independence. While the illustrious histories of struggle and revolution in the region are important, the unsavory histories of reactionary/co-conspirator Caribbean governments that align with US imperialism help us better understand the current political moment.
There are Caribbean governments today that enthusiastically support converting the Caribbean Sea into an active warzone, where US drone warfare and aerial bombing are not only acceptable, but cheered and presented as necessary. In this sense, these neocolonial governments consent to the US military buildup in the Caribbean and actively participate in shaping this regional militarism.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday announced a series of nine new measures—including a total arms embargo—aimed at pressuring the government of fugitive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “to stop the genocide in Gaza.”
Sánchez, who leads the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), announced the steps during a speech in which he first acknowledged the historical suffering of the Jewish people, which includes the 1492 ethnic cleansing of Jews from Spain.
“The Jewish people have suffered countless persecutions, deserve to have their own state, and to feel secure,” Sánchez said. “That is why the Spanish government has condemned Hamas’ attacks from day one.”
However, “there is a difference between defending your country and bombing hospitals or starving innocent children,” the prime minister continued. “This is an unjustifiable attack on the civilian population, which the [United Nations] rapporteur has described as genocide.”
“Sixty thousand dead, two million displaced, half of them children,” Sánchez said. “This is not self-defense, it is not even an attack—it is the extermination of a defenseless people and a violation of every international law.”

“Israel uses aid to exploit and humiliate”

On 26 July, Yousef Alnono, a Palestinian from Gaza and a contributor to The Electronic Intifada, was at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, waiting for word about his uncle who had been shot by an Israeli soldier in the head the day before, and who later succumbed to his wounds.
Alnono, 23, who related to The Electronic Intifada this account, said that he met an injured man in his twenties in the same hallway and chatted with him about how he was injured.
The man told Alnono that he had ventured the week before to the aid convoys near Zikim boundary crossing in northern Gaza to get food when Israeli soldiers suddenly opened fire on the crowd.
He ducked and took cover behind a sand barrier before shrapnel hit his hand and leg, making him fall to the ground and scream for help.
It was like doomsday, the man said, as no one could come to his aid since they were trying to survive the Israeli bullets.
An hour later, Israeli soldiers approached him and told him they would treat his wounds.
The man was terrified but hopeful – at least, he told Alnono, he might get medical care.
After basic treatment, one of the soldiers handed him half a pack of cigarettes and some aid.
Then the soldiers began questioning him, asking which neighborhood he was from and whether he knew anyone there affiliated with Hamas or the resistance.
Terrified, the man felt he had no choice but to respond.
The soldiers reassured him not to be afraid and gave him a number to call, promising him more aid if he returned with additional information.
What is the point of the GHF?
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation – a flawed US body trusted by Israel to deliver aid in Gaza – launched its first aid delivery on 27 May 2025.
This came after international pressure on Israel to allow aid into the Gaza Strip, following its halt on 1 March with accusations that Hamas was looting it, despite lacking any credible evidence.
From 27 May to 5 August, Israel has killed at least 859 Palestinian aid seekers near GHF sites.
Doctors Without Borders said that the GHF “is forcing Palestinians to choose between starvation or risking their lives for minuscule amounts of aid.”
The GHF tries to give the impression that Israel provides aid when it is actually exploiting aid distribution to humiliate and kill starving Palestinians in Gaza while spreading chaos among them.
But what does that look like on the ground? The Electronic Intifada talked with two people in Gaza to elaborate more on the GHF’s schemes.
Sites are intentionally distant
Muhammad Shallah, 21, has visited GHF sites at least four times and managed to secure aid twice for his family of nine. He told The Electronic Intifada that these distribution points are “a trap for young people and a humiliation.”
Only if people can reach the aid site before being shot, GHF distributes inadequate aid chaotically.
“They are a grave insult to us and not considered assistance,” Shallah said.
The four distribution points – two in Rafah’s far south, one in eastern Khan Younis and one in Netzarim – are intentionally distant from where most people relocated in southern or northern Gaza.
Many Palestinians – like the elderly, people with disabilities, the injured, orphans and widows – can’t make it to these far-off points.
People walk from their dwellings until they reach an area only demarcated by Israeli soldiers firing warning shots – many of which are deadly or injurious.
People then wait until they are allowed to move forward to the distribution points – a distance of approximately 2.8 kilometers, according to Shallah, “along a path that resembles desert sand, scattering dust if people start running.”
Killing as a game . . . .

“What my sister teaches me about survival”

Nearly 13 years ago, during Israel’s assault on Gaza in 2012, I took this photo of my youngest sister, Nesma.
She was almost 5 years old, full of energy and curiosity. Despite the power cuts and relentless bombardment, she would sit quietly with her book, diligently completing her kindergarten exercises.
At the time, I didn’t realize that this small act, holding a pen amid chaos, would become the very definition of her life in Gaza.
Today, history has repeated itself. I took another photo of Nesma, now 17 years old. The scene looks the same: Nesma, her books and her determination.

But everything else has changed.
She is no longer in her room; she has been displaced for months. She no longer has teachers or classrooms; her school is being used as a shelter. There are no textbooks, desks, electricity or internet. She studies in the middle of a war, surrounded by hunger, siege and death.
She’s survived six Israeli assaults on Gaza since she was born in 2008. She’s brilliant: fluent in three languages, gifted in mathematics and physics and dreams of becoming a doctor. But now she studies under unimaginable conditions. Still, she perseveres.
Cruel twist of fate
Just days before the war began, Nesma graduated from the English Access Program, a two-year course funded by the US State Department that provides English language instruction and additional workshops to talented students.
She had earned top marks and was thinking about applying for scholarships to study in the United States. Instead, in a cruel twist of fate, the very weapons supplied by that same government would soon destroy her home, her room, her desk, her books and her school, shattering not only the walls around her but also the dreams she had so carefully built.
Nesma has lost nephews, her brother-in-law and her teachers during the genocide. Yet she still refuses to stop. She knows that education is her only path forward, her only form of resistance, and her best chance at contributing to a better future for Palestine and for humanity.

Roberto Sirvent: How can your book help BAR readers understand the current political and social climate?
Tracie Canada: The world of intercollegiate athletics is rapidly changing and has undergone significant recent shifts, especially since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Discourse dealing with injury, politics, pay, and protest have all affected the field of play, specifically challenging the college football landscape in a way that speaks to issues that matter way beyond sports.
Tackling the Everyday focuses on the lived experiences of Black college football players, as I consider how college football harms and impacts the Black players who are overrepresented in the sport that sustains the entire college sport system. Though this book is not an explicit statement about the current state of intercollegiate athletics, I discuss the ways that labor, exploitation, race, violence, care, and kinship matter for these Black men, as they navigate their experiences on the gridiron and in the real world away from it. These athletes live in particular bodies that are built up for the sport, yet are stereotyped as threatening and dangerous when they remove their uniforms and helmets. Billions of dollars are also wrapped up in this system that depends on Black male athletic labor, even though profits flow away from those who actually participate in football play.
An analysis of this unique, dualistic experience allows for a robust conversation about how anti-Blackness, structural violence, racialized exploitation, and capitalist accumulation impact Black college football players’ experiences with the sport and with each other. Additionally, there is room for a conversation about how everyday Black folks are navigating oppressive and anti-Black systems that actively enact violence and harm. As I think about the connections between blackness, labor, bodies, exploitation, violence, dehumanization, joy, life, connection, kin, and care, I consider this work to be a contribution to the myriad of works concerned with the predicament of Black life in the US.
What do you hope activists and community organizers will take away from reading your book?
This book is based on almost a decade’s worth of ethnographic research, as I spent time with Black college football players to learn about their everyday lives. During a period that was marred by everything from Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling protests in the NFL, to pandemic football play, it became clear that I write about a population that is simultaneously hypervisible and invisible in public narratives about the most popular sport in the US. While there seems to be abundant information available about these athletes, I often find these media representations to be limited to certain athletes with certain marketable stories. I hope that readers of my book take away different and new perspectives about the lives of Black players. If we shift the frame to say that success for these athletes is not to make it to the professional league, but is instead to live a playful, loving, full life with their friends and family, what comes up in a study of young Black men who also happen to be college football players?
Because my scholarly interest in college football has nothing to do with how successful a team or player is on the field, I draw attention to the plantation logics and racial capitalism that organize and undergird the sport at this level. Uniformity, control, standardization, surveillance, disciplining, and intense regimenting of players’ time, dress, speech, behavior, and food actually make up the foundation of participation in the sport. These are all administrative actions that make players legible to the football system as laboring bodies that are able to produce on behalf of their institutions. With this in mind, my object of inquiry became the intimacy that bounds Black players’ relationships with each other and with others, particularly their mothers, as they attempt to navigate this anti-Black, exploitative, and patriarchal sporting system.

“Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” (Donald Trump)
There is a historical and social context that must ground our understanding of the policy formations emanating from the Trump administration. And what is that context?
It is the denial on the part of elements in the Trump administration and the U.S. ruling class that the world has entered a transitional period where hegemonic power has shifted away from the U.S. and the “collective West.”
This detachment from reality has resulted in contradictory policies emanating from the Trump administration that have been both reckless and counterproductive to the interests of the U.S. desire to maintain global dominance. The overreliance on the use of coercive measures and various forms of state violence and subversion by the elements of the capitalist ruling class who represent the most aggressive elements of that class has failed to reverse the imperial decline accelerated over the last three administrations.
The inability to come to terms with the ongoing economic crisis that began in 2007-08 and only slighted mitigated during the first few years of Trump’s first administration brought the Trump forces back to power in 2025 after the disastrous policies of the Biden administration that created the Ukrainian war, 1970s style “stagflation” and the genocide in Gaza. But with the return of Trump there was another aspect of the Biden administration that the Trump forces would build on. And that was the naked use of state power to suppress opposition domestically with the attacks on students who opposed the U.S. supported genocide in Gaza and the criminalization of opponents to the Ukraine war being two dramatic examples of those policies. But U.S. lawlessness in the international arena was also something Trump continued and took to a new level.
War and repression were instrumentalized as the weapons of choice. Full spectrum dominance globally with a military first strategy and enhanced policing, including with the federalization of the national guard and the Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) both strategies rationalized by the need to control and contain the racialized others in order to maintain natural racial hierarchy.
This commitment represented the complete abandonment of the liberal rights framework and the structures and institutions of the liberal international order established after the second imperialist war in 1945.
This turn requires the suppression of all internal opposition. . . .

Apple has made headlines in recent weeks for touting its commitment to privacy and human rights, rolling out tools to limit surveillance and spyware. But behind the corporate messaging lies a much darker reality.
The company has quietly brought in dozens of veterans from Unit 8200, Israel’s shadowy military intelligence unit known for blackmail, mass surveillance, and targeted killings.
Many of these hires took place as Israel escalated its war on Gaza, and as CEO Tim Cook publicly expressed support for Israel while disciplining employees for pro-Palestinian expressions. Apple’s deepening ties to Israel’s most controversial intelligence raise uncomfortable questions, not only about the company’s political loyalties, but also about how it handles vast troves of personal user data.
A MintPress News investigation has identified dozens of Unit 8200 operatives now working at Apple. The company’s hiring spree coincides with growing scrutiny of its ties to the Israeli government, including its policy of matching employee donations to groups such as Friends of the IDF and the Jewish National Fund, both of which play a role in the displacement of the Palestinian people. The intense pro-Israel bias at the corporation has led many former and current employees to speak out.
This investigation is part of a series examining the close collaboration between Unit 8200 and Western tech and media companies. Previous investigations examined the links between Unit 8200 and social media giants like TikTok, Facebook and Google, and how former Unit 8200 spies are now responsible for writing much of America’s news about Israel/Palestine, holding top jobs at outlets like CNN and Axios.

Exclusive: Google Helped Israel Spread War Propaganda to 45 Million Europeans.
While it continues its conflict with its neighbors, Israel is fighting another war just as intensely, spending gigantic amounts of money bombarding Europe with messaging justifying their actions, and scaremongering Europeans that Iranian nuclear missiles will soon be turning their cities into rubble.
A MintPress study has found that, since it struck Iran on June 13, the Israeli Government Advertising Agency has paid for tens of millions of advertisements on YouTube alone. In clear breach of Google’s policies, these ads justify and lionize the attack as a necessary defense of Western civilization, and claim that Israel is carrying out “one of the largest humanitarian missions in the world” in Gaza.
The countries most targeted by this campaign include the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, and Greece.
Information War
“A fanatical regime firing missiles at civilians, while racing towards nuclear weapons. While Iran deliberately targets cities, Israel acts with precision to dismantle this threat.” Thus starts one Israeli government ad that hundreds of thousands of YouTube viewers in Europe have been compelled to watch.
“Terror architects behind the elimination of Israel plan: eliminated. Israel targets only military and terror sites, not civilians. But the threat remains,” the voiceover continues, over ominous music and high-tech graphics. “We will finish the mission for our people, for humanity. Israel does what must be done,” it concludes.
“Iran’s ballistic missile program isn’t just a threat to Israel, it is a threat to Europe and the Western world,” another, seen by 1.5 million viewers in just three weeks, claims. “Iran is developing missiles with ranges of approximately 4000 km. That places Europe within the regime’s striking distance,” it adds, as graphics show virtually the entire continent turning blood red, signifying a nuclear attack. “This isn’t tomorrow’s threat. It is today’s reality. The threat posed by the Iranian regime must be stopped. Israel does what must be done.”
Ominous messages like these, translated into multiple languages, have reached tens of millions of people across Europe. Other Israeli government ads take a different tack, attempting to present Israel as a virtuous victim and an unwilling participant in war.
As one commercial notes: . . . .
Imagine this: you are holding your newborn in a hospital room. Then the air raid sirens go off. Iran fires ballistic missiles at hospitals, at innocent Israelis. Patients, doctors, newborn babies: deliberately targeted. While Iran aims at families and children, Israel responds with precision, striking military sites. This is not a war of choice. Those who target civilians and hospitals become the target.”
The claims made in such videos are often highly questionable. For example, around 935 Iranians were killed in Israeli strikes, compared to just 28 Israelis, suggesting Israel is far less careful to avoid civilian deaths than its opponent. Indeed, since October 2023, Israel has repeatedly and deliberately targeted hospitals. The World Health Organization has documented at least 697 Israeli strikes on medical facilities.
