This debut feature film by journalist Abby Martin began while reporting in Palestine, where she was denied entry into Gaza by the Israeli government on the accusation she was a “propagandist.” So Abby connected with a team of journalists in Gaza to produce the film through the blockaded border. It is a documentary about the historic Great March Of Return protests, which occurred every week from March 2018 until December 2019, but covers so much more. It tells the story of Gaza past and present, showing rare archival footage that explains the history never acknowledged by mass media. You hear from victims of the ongoing massacre, including journalists, medics and the family of internationally-acclaimed paramedic, Razan al-Najjar. Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
The truth can never be definitively proven by logic alone; the proof is always in the pudding. It begins and ends with observation: an axiom is not a logical construct, nor is a premise always a proven fact.
We live in a world haunted by both reality and by virtual reality. The imaginary and the real are instrumental in discovering “the truth beyond a reasonable doubt.” The key word here is reasonable. Reason --a concept much celebrated in western history since the periods of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution-- occupies a finite domain, an experiential area in the human psyche which, nevertheless, is much wider than the even more restricted domain of Logic, while a third concept, Emotion, occupies a much broader area of diverse life experiences --more pervasive, more inclusive, encompassing nearly all living things.
In short, subjective emotional experiences enable us to selectively perceive the events around us, and to objectify our understanding and control of our world; we employ logic and reason, to exclude the “extraneous” and focus sharply on our intended results –whether conscious or unconscious, whether received ideas or original desires.
One man’s meat is another man’s poison!
Today, we are presented with a textbook example of this quest for understanding and control of events via the larger-than-life genocides that are occurring within the purview of the entire world while it is happening, orchestrated by Big Pharma, the Imperial Military-Industrial Complex, the Capitalist System with its built-in indoctrination mechanisms –pervasive like the air we breathe.
But we are not alone. Our shadow is following every move we make, and ignorance will never serve as a cover for the multitude of crimes against humanity.
The 26+ items below are critical essays and articles which reflect some of the historic contradictions that continue to plague capitalist accumulation in sharply divided class societies. In recent years, we have witnessed the demise of liberal capitalist democracy, and its transformation into an authoritarian plutocracy. We now can see how capitalist interests continue to follow slavishly the laws of this political economy, but today this is done without the pretext of protecting the individual’s life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
The genocide and mass murder we are now witnessing will return to haunt us in this historic class-driven conflict between capital and labor. The luxury of sheer speculation is over, and the proverbial question must be answered: “Which side are you on?”

Ever since the Internet was born, along with Big Tech, in the 1990s, the world has had a sense that we have entered a new era in global political economy. Many have tried to place a finger on what this transformation is all about. Perhaps the most famous among these critical thinkers is Shoshana Zuboff, who wrote that we are living in an era of “surveillance capitalism,” wherein our harvesting information from cyberspace also provides Google, Microsoft, and other tech titans the opportunity to rake in data about us that they process to create our digital profiles. These profiles are then used by them or their client corporations to manipulate us into purchasing products or are sold to the state, which has an interest in keeping tabs on us.
Another important effort to define what was new came from Mckenzie Wark, who wrote in her influential Hacker’s Manifesto that the central contradiction of the new age was no longer that between capital and labor but between “hackers,” or the sources of innovation and creativity who wanted to keep information free, and the “vectoral ruling class” that sought to expropriate knowledge and turn it into a commodity.
Acknowledging his debt to both Zuboff and Wark, Yanis Varoufakis says that while they have important insights, they have not followed these to their logical conclusion: that capitalism as a distinct mode of production has been superseded. The synthesis that Varoufakis offers is what he calls “technofeudalism.” He does not say that capitalists no longer matter. They do, and they still engage in extracting surplus value or profit from workers in the process of production. But they themselves are subordinate to a new elite, the “cloud capitalists” or “cloudalists,” who have privatized the commons that was cyberspace and now control access to it. The cloudalists, among the most powerful of which are Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and the chipmaker Nvidia, control the globe-spanning information highways that are sustained materially by massive data centers located in different parts of the world. Accessing these intermeshed networks in cyberspace known as the “cloud” is now vital for the traditional or “terrestrial” capitalists to get access to you to sell their products, and these corporate gatekeepers make their money by charging these capitalists rent. Without access to the net, capitalists cannot make profits, and, very much like the feudal lords of yore who controlled land, the cloudalists’ monopolistic control of the cloud allows them to directly or indirectly collect, from the “vassal capitalists” and anyone who uses the net, “rent,” or income that is not subject to the market competition on which profit depends.
Cloud Proles and Cloud Serfs
As in capitalism, it is not the cloudalists or the terrestrial capitalists that produce value. The real sources of value are what Varoufakis calls the “cloud proles” and the “cloud serfs.” The cloud proles are the service workers at Amazon and other Big Tech facilities who are nonunionized, paid meager wages, and in constant threat of being displaced by robots and Artificial Intelligence. But these proles’ labor provides only a fraction of the value extracted by the cloudalists. It is the cloud serfs that create most of that value. Following Zuboff, Varoufakis says the cloud serfs are most of us: we provide raw material for the cloud whenever we do a Google search, post a photo on Facebook, or order a book on Amazon, material that is then processed into information that the cloudalists and terrestrial capitalists can use to develop ever more sophisticated marketing strategies to get us to part with our dollars. The distinguishing characteristic of cloud serfs is they are doing unpaid work for the cloudalists even if they don’t realize it. As he remarks, “The fact that we do so voluntarily, happily even, does not detract from the fact that we are unpaid manufacturers—cloud serfs whose daily self-directed toil enriches a tiny band of multibillionaires.”
We are, in other words, the unsuspecting marks of the ultimate scam.
The Rise of Cloud Capital
Varoufakis traces the rise of the cloudalists to the central banks’ creation of money with zero or below zero interest in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2008 and, later, during the COVID 19 pandemic, to stimulate production and consumer spending. But, with the big fall in demand, most corporations did not invest the loans the private banks channeled to them, instead using them to buy back their own corporate stocks at low prices or invest it in real estate. But cloudalists like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg used the central bank money rerouted to them by the big banks to massively invest in expanding and monopolizing the cloud. The cloudalists
mopped up many of the billions sloshing around within the financial system. With them, they paid for server farms, fibre optic cables, artificial intelligence laboratories, gargantuan warehouses, software developers, top-notch engineers, laboratories, promising start-ups and all the rest. In an environment where profit had become optional, the cloudalists seized upon the central bank money to build a new empire.

Tom Frank is a chronicler of American politics who loves his hometown of Kansas City, its barbecue, sturdy citizens, and hiking in far-off places. He has a PhD in history from the University of Chicago and next year will publish his eighth book. He lives in suburban Washington and is a contributor to Harper’s Magazine. It is always fun to break bread and talk politics with him, as you will see below. [Editor’s note: This interview has been edited for length and clarity.]
Seymour Hersh: I went back the other day and reread your book Listen, Liberal from 2016. I just want you to know: Nothing changes. You were attacking the Democratic Party for everything you can attack the Democratic Party for today.
Thomas Frank: Okay, but can I tell you why I did that? I don’t want to make it sound unfair. I wrote a book about the Republicans, remember? What’s the Matter with Kansas? I wasn’t sorry that I wrote that. I thought I described the Republicans’ Three Card Monte game very accurately. But the Democrats have their own game. And so there’s these two big fat targets out there. One is the Republicans, and admittedly, they’re worse, right?
SH: But it’s strange that what you said about the Democrats nine years ago is same thing that could be said today.
TF: They aren’t in power anymore. Trump-ism has shattered the system in a lot of ways. And it’s left the Democrats looking pretty obsolete.
SH: But the Democrats are still talking technology.
TF: The Democrats love the word “innovation.” Obama, in particular, he used it constantly. Republicans, especially Reagan, really liked the word “creativity.” It’s this weird divide between the two. And Trump, you know what word he likes? “Genius.” That’s his word.
SH: He means himself.
TF: To get back to the Democrats, their machine—it worked, right? It was a system that worked for a long time and now it’s broken down and they cannot figure out what to do about it. They can’t really understand what went wrong because that would require introspection.
SH: In the Clinton mode, everybody’s going to be a Harvard PhD.
TF: Yeah, well, that was Obama’s cabinet. Do you remember Obama had the most amazing cabinet of all time? It’s like they had every prize. He had a Nobel Laureate in his cabinet. He had Genius Grant winners. He had Pulitzer Prize winners. I think Biden, and I hate to say this because it came to such a bad end. But there’s only a handful of people in the Democratic Party leadership that understand what’s gone wrong. And Biden was one of them. Biden is old enough to remember, not the New Deal, but certainly the tail end of all that in the ’60s. He knew what the Democratic Party used to be. A lot of these people don’t.
SH: They have no idea. They don’t read anything.
TF: But he wasn’t able to turn it around. I mean, he was obviously not the man for that job.
SH: My theory about Biden anyway, is that his decline came earlier than people know—during the second year. And the Mandarins, the Ron Klains and the lawyers and the Donilans, they’re running the government. Why tell the world he’s defective when they’re running the government? In Obama’s years, he made the decisions. So everything was on his desk. He was very hands-on. And Biden then sort of left it to the boys. And my theory is that the real reason they didn’t own up to what was going on is what a chance they had. They could run it, make the decisions, all of them bad. Anyway, so here we are. . . . .

I thank the Backbench Business Committee for scheduling this debate and my 17 colleagues from across the House who supported the application for a debate on the trends on excess deaths. This debate follows on from my Adjournment debate on 20 October on the same issue. The eyes of history are upon us. Every generation looks back in wonder at the incredible mistakes of its forebears. They will ask questions such as, “How could they possibly not have realised how wrong they were?”, “What on earth happened to them?”, “Why did they ignore the evidence for so long, as well as their values and every opportunity to learn from the mistakes of yesteryear?” and “What madness captures men?” From 2010 to 2019, annual death rates in England and Wales oscillated between 484,000 and 542,000. In 2020, there were 607,000 deaths, which is 65,000 more than the maximum figure in 2018. In 2021, there were 586,000 deaths, which is 44,000 more than the 2018 figure. After such a rise, there should be a significant deficit. In fact, our most vulnerable and elderly, who might have lived a while longer, were sadly taken from us early. In 2022, there were 577,000 deaths in England and Wales, and in 2023 there were 581,000. That is a huge rise when a significant deficit would, and should, have been expected. The deficit has been filled not with the extremely old and vulnerable, but has been filled—and then some—with many, many others who are often young or in the prime of their lives. Some people might want to ascribe the excess deaths in 2022 and 2023 to the virus, but that would be a mistake; that is not what their death certificates say. Moreover, far too many young people are dying. Far from being below the recent rolling average, excess deaths in 2022 were above that average: 6% above. In 2023, when one might have expected deaths to finally fall below the average, the excess was also 6% above. Those numbers are higher in the younger age groups. No one with integrity can fail to be troubled by those figures. What is actually going on? That is why we need to have this debate. This problem affects us all. It affects every community in every constituency across the country. I thank all right hon. and hon. Members attending this debate, and we need to thank the public for their interest, which has stirred the interest of colleagues. I am very encouraged by the turnout for today’s debate, which is considerably better than we have seen in the past. Not everyone in this room will be comfortable with analysing scientific data and figures, but that is not my position. I was fortunate enough to take a degree in Toggle showing location of Column 212WH biological sciences from Nottingham University many years ago. I specialised in biochemistry, genetics, behaviour and virology. Of course we should be using the most accurate figures that we have. Later in the speech, I will talk about the data we really want, which would settle this matter once and for all beyond reasonable doubt. I thank the public for their pressure and interest in these statistics, the people who have attended in person today and the thousands who will be watching on television or online. There is a burning question at the heart of this debate. After excess deaths, there should be a deficit: where is it? When will we have it? Worse, why is the deficit being not just filled but significantly exceeded? Why are the institutions, whose job it is to notice, record, publicise and call attention to such matters, apparently asleep at the wheel? A second burning question is why no one is listening to those raising the alarm. The research and analysis done by two of Britain’s most trusted doctors provide us with alarming clarity. Only this week, Professor Carl Heneghan, director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford, reviewed the causes of excess deaths and concluded that they are predominantly related to cardiovascular disease. He told the Sunday Express newspaper that this cannot be explained by covid, population growth or an ageing population. Yesterday, consultant cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, who is a world-leading expert in the causes of heart disease, told TNT Radio that even though cardiovascular disease is multifactorial, top of the list in Toggle showing location of Column 213WH the hierarchy of causes behind excess cardiac-related deaths has to be the experimental covid mRNA vaccine until proven otherwise. This is not speculative.

Israel has been stealing land yet again and for a change its not from Palestine, but firing at the witnesses wasn't a good idea either... Right, so Israel have been busy redrawing borders in their favour again, and they didn’t even bother pretending otherwise this time. The UN has measured the concrete, mapped the breaches, and written down exactly where Israel has shoved its latest wall across the Blue Line. Lebanon has filed the complaint, UNIFIL has logged the violations, and the only people acting surprised are the ones who always act surprised when Israel helps itself to land that isn’t theirs. And just to underline the point, when peacekeepers went out to verify the second breach, an Israeli tank positioned inside Lebanon opened fire and put rounds about five metres from their boots. You don’t need a panel discussion to work out what’s going on here. Israel builds where it wants, denies it’s done it, expands it anyway, says its their right and even fires at the UN when the UN tries to prove it. Well its not like the UN will do anything I suppose is it? Right, so Israel has been building walls inside Lebanon now, and the UN has measured every metre of it. That’s where this story starts. You don’t need speculation, you don’t need political spin, you don’t need to guess what’s going on, because the only people with the legal authority to determine whether the Blue Line, the border between the two states, has been crossed are the UN peacekeepers whose entire mandate is built on maintaining that boundary. And those peacekeepers have now mapped not one, but several Israeli structures that fall inside Lebanese territory. They’ve logged the coordinates, they’ve produced the geospatial surveys, they’ve issued the warnings, they’ve told the Israeli army to stop, and Israel hasn’t stopped. In fact, it’s done the opposite. It has carried on, expanded the wall, produced a second breach, dug in a tank position north of the Blue Line, and then fired on the peacekeepers who were documenting the violations. That’s the story.

Right, so Iran has finally said the quiet part out loud, and of course it lands like heresy in Washington because the accusation is not that the United States is biased or heavy-handed or looking the other way, it’s that the world’s self-appointed guardian of international law has stripped the wiring out of the system to let Israel run a regional free-fire zone. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is standing there in Tehran saying the US is replacing the entire post-war legal order with a force-based model designed to protect a state whose prime minister has been talking up Greater Israel as if it’s a family heirloom he’s polishing. And when you put that beside the strikes on Iran, the strikes in Syria and Lebanon, the UN vetoes, the stockpiled American munitions and the rest of it, well, it sounds less like Iranian bluster and more like someone describing the map as it already looks.
Right, so Iran is not just shouting at the clouds here, they are laying out a prosecution case, and the charge sheet is simple enough that you can follow it without having to buy into every bit of Tehran’s rhetoric. Abbas Araghchi is saying that the United States has stopped even pretending to run the post-war legal order and is now running a force-based system instead, and that system exists to protect Israel while it throws its weight around the region. You do not have to agree with Iran on anything else to see what he is doing there, because once you put the recent strikes, the public statements and the diplomatic wreckage in order, you end up with something that looks less like a conspiracy theory and more like a description of how power is actually working right now. The question is not whether the US likes Israel, that has been obvious for decades.

So he called her a “witch.” She replied that if she had that kind of power, she’d use it to stop their crimes. The mic drop moment. That’s the story now — Israel’s excuses collapsing under evidence it can’t erase and a UN lawyer who won’t be silenced. She’s the witch they can’t burn.
Right, so the United States hosts the United Nations. But due to sanctions, it has banned one of its own investigators.
Francesca Albanese was meant to walk into the General Assembly chamber in New York, sit down behind the UN crest, and present her report on Gaza. Instead, she had to do it from Cape Town, because Washington had sanctioned her. Assets frozen, visa cancelled, entry barred. That’s the price she is personally paying for doing her job. A UN rapporteur banned from UN headquarters by the government that’s supposed to guarantee her access. That isn’t an oversight. That’s the host turning the institution into private property. The UN remaining on US soil is frankly a farce, but that’s another story.
Albanese’s report, Gaza Genocide: A Collective Crime, runs twenty-four pages and it doesn’t deal in adjectives, it doesn’t mince its words. It lists the states that keep Israel’s war going. Sixty-three of them. She calls it a “collective crime” because genocide of this scale doesn’t run on one country’s resources.

Germany’s been dragged to the International Court of Justice over arms exports to Israel — after a genocide risk was already confirmed.
Right, so Germany, the state that built its post-war identity on the promise of “Never Again,” is now defending itself at the International Court of Justice for continuing to arm a state the Court has already said is putting Palestinians at serious risk of genocide. And it’s not a misunderstanding, it’s not confusion, it’s not some bureaucratic tangle. Germany knew the ruling, knew the risk, and signed the export licences anyway. That’s on the record.
Now Nicaragua has dragged them to The Hague, not to accuse them of pulling the trigger, but of supplying the ammunition once the law said stop. And the worst part? They’re not even arguing they did prevent genocide. They’re arguing that nobody should be allowed to ask if they did. And that tells you everything.
Right, so the break did not come from activism, protest, journalism or political speech. It came from the International Court of Justice, in the language only the Court uses, when it stated that the Palestinian population in Gaza is facing a serious risk of genocide. This was issued in January 2024 as part of the provisional measures in the case brought by South Africa. The phrasing matters. The ICJ does not use the word genocide unless the evidentiary threshold of risk is met, no matter how many world leaders quibble over that. That threshold is not rhetorical, it is not emotional. It is legal. It rests on patterns of k*lling, patterns of displacement, patterns of destruction of civilian infrastructure, and statements and conduct from state officials that indicate the targeting of a protected group.
Once the Court identified a serious risk of genocide, the Genocide Convention became active. The Convention does not only prohibit states from committing genocide. It requires states to prevent genocide wherever they have the capacity to influence events. This duty is binding on all parties to the Convention. There are no special exemptions for strategic alliances, historical identity narratives, or claims of security necessity. The obligation is absolute: if a state has the ability to act, it must act to prevent genocide once the risk has been recognised.
Germany is a state that has such capacity. It is not a bystander. It is not merely an observer. It is a material supplier of weapons, equipment and military assistance to Israel. That is documented in Germany’s own arms export licensing data. Over a twenty-year period, from 2003 to 2023, the German state authorised more than three billion euros in military exports to Israel across thousands of individual licences.
