A Face in the Crowd is a 1957 American drama film starring Andy Griffith (in his film debut), Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau, directed by Elia Kazan. The screenplay is by Budd Schulberg and is based on his short story "Your Arkansas Traveler", from the collection Some Faces in the Crowd (1953).
The story centers on Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes, a drifter who is discovered by the producer (Neal) of a small-market radio program in rural northeast Arkansas. Rhodes ultimately rises to great fame and influence on national television. The character was inspired by Schulberg's acquaintance with Will Rogers Jr. The successes of Arthur Godfrey and Tennessee Ernie Ford were also acknowledged in the screenplay.
The film launched Griffith into stardom but got mixed reviews upon its original release. Later decades have seen favorable reappraisals of the movie, and in 2008 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
There seems to be a plethora of evidence that some form of sadomasochism has become the leitmotif of US foreign and domestic policy. The proclivities of the ruling class make this trend almost inevitable: bored rich kids looking for new thrills will try anything, and when they assemble together the synergy that develops is irresistible and quickly transforms into cruel and homicidal dimensions, as we have seen repeatedly. They are above the law and "free" from any ethics or principled morality, other than perhaps some tribal loyalties; these are genuine chaqun-pour-soi individualists who look down on the rest of us in society. Convinced of their own superiority, their disproportionate will to gain private profit over us has alienated them from the rest of humanity. They are preditors and have no where to go --with all their money and capital weighing like the stinking corpse of an albatross around their necks-- as the ship of state goes down and takes down the entire society in its wake. Their disgusting personal delusions they mistake as a species of elite culture; in reality it is a pathetic anti-culture, a sort of Pac-Man icon programmed to eat and destroy any obstacle that might cross its path in the two dimensional world they inhabit. They are completely devoid of legitimate social objectives and are left without any collective visions of a better world for humanity (beyond their sophomoric urge to whittle down the world’s population in order to secure their control over the rest of us). The harebrained ideas which they frequently proclaim are normally associated with hebephrenic adolescence, a fairly common emotional disorder that sometimes manifests itself over a short period of time before mature adulthood. These lost adolescents who struggle to rule over us today, empowered with more wealth than they know what to do with, are the inevitable product of generations of gross inequality in capitalist society; they are without historic memory, their capacity to reason is hampered by their will to win at all costs; their emotional life has been mutilated, leaving vague feelings of loss and anxiety. Meanwhile, the rest of us are expected to obey their caprice and pay the costs.
But for how much longer will they rule over us before class rebellion overthrows them? And what next…?

While the right—both old and new—keeps hammering Barack Obama (largely out of racism and Islamophobia), Bill Clinton harmed the people of this country (and others) far more gravely than Obama ever did.
This post was motivated by an email blast sent out by Mikki Willis late last year, arguing that Barack Obama was “was our most dangerous leader”, and “the most destructive president this nation has ever experienced.” Willis based this judgement on a range of measures taken by Obama—extending the “war on terror” (adding five new wars to Bush/Cheney’s two), increasing surveillance and spy programs, bolstering the financial position of the top 10%, blaming voters for failure of the democratic process, and more.
I found this to be a superficial analysis, since all those steps were merely caretaker actions, perfectly in line with the warlike and repressive program that had been overtaking us since JFK’s assassination. Willis’ specious email jogged my memory of Thomas Frank’s book Listen, Liberal (2016). Here I take Frank’s salient points and flesh them out a bit, to show that Obama was, in fact, a “punter” compared to the catastrophic “Democrat” Bill Clinton.

Tricontinental brings together many of the monumental commitments that emerged from the Tricontinental conference, including speeches, resolutions, and never-before-seen photos from this historic meeting.
In 1966, revolutionary forces were on the offensive: the Vietnamese were bravely fighting the US military, South Africa was rising up against apartheid, Palestine was resisting Zionist colonization, among many other fronts of struggle. US imperialism, on the defensive, was wreaking havoc across the world—it became obvious that worldwide solidarity among revolutionary forces was a necessary step towards achieving total liberation. The Tricontinental was not only an acknowledgment of that fact, but a promise to make that solidarity a material reality. Decades later, US imperialism continues its assault on working and oppressed people across the world, and this conference provides us a glimpse into what is necessary to build true liberation today.
