Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
I was 6 or 7 years old when my older brother taught me what he claimed to be the longest word in the English language, ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM. It was an arcane adventure: I first went about learning to pronounce the word, syllable by syllable, then attempted to learn its meaning. It clearly seemed to be an expression in defense of something, opposed to some sort of change. At that time I couldn’t find a dictionary which contained this word, but I went to my primary school the next morning proud of my new acquisition, “the longest word in the English language.” My freshly acquired knowledge was met with a measure of indifference; even my teacher seemed unimpressed. My arduous venture was soon dissolved on the playground, where democracy ruled and chosen leaders were regularly replaced, according to demands. I later learned that this new word had more than one significance, and historic context gave it specific meaning in 19th century England, during the struggle against the State Church.
NIHILISM is a word that appears more frequently in the contemporary context of a complete ideological takeover of the hegemonic state apparatus controlled by one social class. “War without end!” is the theme of this particular ideology, which has been essentially driven by the conviction of the Neo-liberal establishment dictum that enrichissez-vous (first pronounced by the 19th century French Minister of Foreign Affairs, François Guizot) constitutes a coherent political philosophy. The private accumulation of wealth at all costs is now the model for “successful” behavior at all levels of society.
“Beggar thy neighbor” has entered the domain of religious dogma, and today the private accumulation of wealth has become the uncontested measure of universal human value. However, class struggle still makes its appearance in this drama, and as usual it is coughed up by contradictions and paradoxes produced by circumstances beyond the control of any one interest group. The self-appointed elites now appear naked before us, stripped of their pretentions of Absolute Superiority. Their wealth simply no longer serves to protect them; the violent and exploitative origins of their wealth have become apparent, as have their repugnant entertainments, all at our expense.
Below, in the following 26+ items, we once again present critical essays and articles taken from Anglophone social media that expose conflicting social class interests in the United States and beyond. We should not be distracted by the wanton violence in some of these discussions, but rather look for its origins and the consequence such chaos engenders. Readers should keep in mind that class conflicts are not new, but instead they constitute a historical constant, often called by another name. What does make a new appearance occasionally is the technology, the administrative organization, and the cultural expressions that mediate these conflicts and give them a contemporaneous cast, no matter in what century they take place. In all periods, we find the same traces of hypocrisy, mystification, and bad faith, which serve to conceal the wide-spread exploitation and suffering produced, and often the odious collusion between self-appointed “leaders” of social classes at war (but the waters are never muddied forever).

“ICE Brings the War Home”

Last month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers pulled over several cars in Eagle County, Colorado. They took the people away in handcuffs, according to a witness, and left the cars idling at the side of the road. When family members of the disappeared immigrants arrived, there was no sign of their loved ones. What they found instead were customized ace of spades playing cards that read “ICE Denver Field Office.”
When I saw an image of that card, the memories came flooding back. I’d seen something similar many years before. Sitting in the U.S. National Archives building — Archives II — in College Park, Maryland, sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s, I’d spent parts of several afternoons watching film footage shot by — and of — U.S. troops in Vietnam back in the 1960s. One of those silent military home movies always stuck with me.
That short film opened with a Vietnamese woman clutching a child next to a group of 10 or 15 other children huddled together. They all look wary. Worried. Scared. The camera lingered on a young girl, perhaps five years old, clutching a baby. If that girl survived, she would be around 64 years old today.
After several shots of those children, the source of their fear was revealed. The film cut to a group of foreign young men — heavily armed U.S. soldiers. They were tanned and gaunt, smoking and talking, standing over the corpses of some young Vietnamese men or boys. We see the dead bodies at a distance, again. Lying together and yet eerily alone. Next, the film cuts to a collection of weapons — perhaps a cache found in or near the Vietnamese village where all of this occurred — that resembled old junk more than lethal armaments. The film kept cutting between short scenes of American troops and Vietnamese bodies until it happened.
I’ve never forgotten the scene that followed because I was initially shocked that it had been immortalized on film. I was also surprised that the film had never been destroyed. But then I remembered how ubiquitous such activity was at the time. How soldiers bragged about it. How it was covered — positively — in the U.S. press. How it even showed up in the Congressional Record, not as an outrage deserving of investigation but essentially as a thank you to a manufacturer of playing cards.
In the next scene, we see a soldier pull an ace of spades from what looks like a big stack of such cards. He’s nonchalant. He’s clearly not worried about an officer seeing what he’s doing. He obviously knows he’s being filmed. He reaches down and, as another soldier presses his boot into the chest of that corpse to hold it steady, he tries to insert the card into the mouth of one of the dead Vietnamese. It’s apparently not so easy. It takes a bit of doing, but it proves possible. The next scene shows an ace of spades sticking out of the dead boy’s mouth. The camera lingers. It’s oddly and sickeningly cinematic. The following scene shows another Vietnamese, his face blackened. There’s a battered ace of spades jammed in his mouth, too.
“Impeding” ICE
Such “death cards” — generally either an ace of spades or a custom-printed business card claiming credit for a kill — were ubiquitous among U.S. troops in Vietnam in those years. Some soldiers, like those in that unit of the 25th Infantry Division operating in Quang Ngai Province in 1967, used a regular ace of spades of the type you’d find in a standard deck of cards. But Company A, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade, for instance, left their victims with a customized ace of spades sporting the unit’s nickname “Gunfighters,” a skull-and-crossbones, and the phrase “dealers of death.” Helicopter pilots, like Captain Lynn Carlson, occasionally dropped similar specially made calling cards from their gunships. One side of Carlson’s card read: “Congratulations. You have been killed through courtesy of the 361st. Yours truly, Pink Panther 20.” The other side proclaimed, “The Lord giveth and the 20mm [cannon] taketh away. Killing is our business and business is good.”
The cards found last month in Eagle County harken back to that brutal heritage. They were the same general size and shape as those shoved into the mouths of dead Vietnamese: black and white 4×6-inch cards with an “A” over a spade in their top left and bottom right corners. A larger ornate black-and-white spade dominates the center of the card. Above it is the phrase “ICE Denver Field Office.” Below it, you find the address and phone number of the ICE detention facility in nearby Aurora, Colorado.
The 10 people taken away by ICE in Eagle County are now reportedly being held in that very same Aurora Detention Facility.
In a recent letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the Democrats in Colorado’s Congressional delegation called out ICE’s use of the ace of spades. The card, they wrote, “has long been known as the ‘death card’ and has been used by white supremacist groups to inspire fear and threaten physical violence. It is unacceptable and dangerous for federal law enforcement to use this symbol to intimidate Latino communities.” They continued: “This behavior undermines public trust in law enforcement, raises serious civil rights concerns, and falls far short of the professional standards expected of federal agents.”
ICE’s Denver field office offered a boilerplate response to TomDispatch when questioned about the use of the cards. “ICE is investigating this situation but unequivocally condemns this type of action and/or officer conduct,” a spokesperson wrote in an email, adding, “Once notified, ICE supervisors acted swiftly to address the issue.” The spokesperson said that ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility, which deals with employee misconduct, will conduct a “thorough investigation,” but the Colorado lawmakers asked for more. Those lawmakers called for an independent investigation by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General.

In Iran, the U.S. and Israel are employing tactics used in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the “War on Terror” and Trump’s recent attacks on alleged drug boats in the Carribean.
TEHRAN, IRAN—As groups of families and others gathered Sunday evening at cafes around Niloofar Square—a middle-class area in eastern Tehran—after breaking their fast for Ramadan, a series of explosions struck the area, leveling several buildings and killing over 20 people, according to witnesses at the scene and later reports from local news sources.
Witnesses who spoke to Drop Site said two explosions hit the area—a smaller strike in the vicinity, followed by a larger one that devastated much of the neighborhood, a tactic known as a “double tap” strike that is used to inflict maximum casualties.
Videos of the immediate aftermath of the attack showed several individuals dead and wounded as well as massive destruction on the street outside. In Cafe Ahla, next to the square, blood and debris soaked the floors. Several patrons who had been sitting there when the attack struck could be seen dead on the floor or with their mutilated bodies still sprawled across their seats.
“We were sitting here around 8:00-8:30 p.m. and suddenly there was the noise and explosion. We got up and a few people ran away. We turned around to get our belongings and we saw that blood was spraying everywhere. Someone’s hand had fallen on the floor, a head had fallen on the floor,” said Shahin, a witness who had been at the cafe and asked to be identified by first name only. “There were scalps torn off, hands severed, a few people were laying here all cut up and two people were martyred.”

“Magamyman” profited over $500,000 by placing wagers predicting
U.S.-brokered regime change in Iran before the Trump administration and
Israel launched strikes in the region, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
These bets came among half-a-billion dollars wagered on the timing of U.S.
attacks on Iran just on Polymarket alone. The platform sets itself apart from
competitor Kalshi by allowing users — and potentially insiders — to
bet directly on geopolitical turmoil and violence, creating what critics charge
are essentially “assassination market[s],”
which the Trump administration has encouraged to operate freely.
Polymarket, which counts President Donald Trump’s son among its advisers and investors, defended its business in a recent note on its website, writing that prediction markets “harness the wisdom of the crowd to create accurate, unbiased forecasts” and “that ability is particularly invaluable in gut-wrenching times like today.”
This weekend, the Department of War informed Congress that Iran
did not plan to attack the U.S. military before the Trump administration
launched a coordinated bombing attack against the country with Israel,
contradicting claims put forth by the White House. Despite campaigning against
Bush-style regime change, Trump is now siding with conservative dark money
funds, which have for years been pushing for war against Tehran — parroting
these groups’ concerns about Iran’s nuclear capabilities and its “wicked, radical dictatorship.”
The Lever previously reported on millions of dollars spent on promoting Iran regime change by far-right, anti-Muslim groups. Those campaigns were financed with help from Project 2025-connected GOP megadonors, including those with fortunes tied to the oil industry (Iran holds roughly 12 percent of the world’s known oil reserves).
New legislation introduced by Sen. Bernie
Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) would levy a new 5 percent
annual wealth tax on the roughly 1,000 billionaires currently living in the
U.S., raising an estimated $4.4 trillion in revenue. The bill would direct
those funds toward several initiatives, including a $60,000 national minimum
salary for public schoolteachers; a $3,000 stimulus check for every
individual in households earning less than $150,000 a year; and an expansion of
Medicare to include vision, dental, and hearing coverage.
Sanders argued that the tax would redistribute trillions of dollars held by some of the richest men in the world. For example, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s net worth would fall from an estimated $833 billion to $792 billion.

“A War That Cannot Be Won: Israel and the United States Bomb Iran”

Having just formed the Board of Peace, the United States and Israel have begun the board’s first war, this time on Iran. The US-Israel attack launched early on February 28, on sites in Iran has already caused devastation, including the deaths of at least 60 little girls from an elementary school in Minab (Hormozgan Province), and dozens of others across the country. The latest estimates put the death toll at 201.
In fact, the attack on Iran on February 28, 2026, was not the first strike on Iran. Israel and the US have been in a state of war against Iran for decades, either through direct military strikes (as recently as June 2025) or through the long hybrid war imposed on Iran (including punitive US sanctions that began in 1996).
Neither Israel nor the United States value the United Nations Charter, whose Article 2 has been routinely violated by both (neither face condemnation in the UN Security Council, which impacts the reputation of the Charter). For decades now, the United States and its Global North allies have demonized Iran, treating its politics as terrorism and its government as dictatorial. They have essentially created the argument that attempts to overthrow the government in Tehran is legitimate even if it is a violation of the UN Charter.
However, US President Donald Trump does not have the appetite for a long war. He has a short-attention span and seeks quick victories that can quickly give him a headline for the news cycle, like the kidnapping of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026, and the executive order to prevent the sale of oil to Cuba on January 30. Trump hoped for a similar outcome: the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei or the president, Masoud Pezeshkian. Reports have confirmed that Iran’s supreme leader was in fact killed in the Israeli-US attack. However, despite Trump’s call for regime change, so far there has been no change in political leaders. The Israeli-US strike in June 2025 did not destroy Iran’s nuclear energy project, nor did the strike in February 2026 destroy Iran’s political system.

Chris Hedges: As soon as Kirk was assassinated, he was elevated within the canon of his movement to the status of a martyr. That was instant. Even before they had apprehended Robinson as the suspect, you had Trump declare him a martyr. You had flags lowered and half-mast. He was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom instantly. I've watched this before in other conflicts, and it's very dangerous because the martyr is really the lifeblood of radical movements Any kind of dialogue, any kind of compassion with the opposing movement is a betrayal of the sanctity of the martyr. It is to essentially collaborate with people who, through the eyes of the radical movement that you're in, have killed the martyr. And that's, of course, precisely what's happening. They are deadly serious, and they will use the death of Kirk to essentially sanctify this crusade against what is left of our open society. Useful Idiots: You talked about the sanctification of Charlie Kirk when it comes from the right, but I'm curious what you think of it when it comes from the liberal side. Ezra Klein, who is a prominent liberal columnist for the New York Times, the paper of record, wrote an article called Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics the Right Way. Chris Hedges: Well, that's why I don't read Ezra Klein. That's ridiculous. Charlie Kirk was fomenting hate and demonization. Let's begin with the kinds of things he said about Muslims, the kinds of things he said about people of color, in particular Black people, the kinds of things he said about the LGBTQ community, the kinds of things he said about feminists. This was really vitriolic hate speech. And it is, like all hate speech, giving license to people to act upon that hate speech. When I heard about the assassination, I was appalled and horrified, not because I have any love for Kirk, but because I know how it would be weaponized. And in all totalitarian states, vigilante groups are vitally important. And they serve this strange purpose: at once, the formal structures of power. They have a kind of deniability because it's not them. It's one step removed. On the other hand, the vigilante group carries out a lot of the dirty work that whatever police state or totalitarian state wants carried out. Useful Idiots: What do you make of the fallout on the right when it comes to the issue of Israel? A number of sources reported that Charlie Kirk was shifting a little bit on Israel after some unpleasant experiences with pro-Israel donors, including Bill Ackman, and Charlie Kirk was insisting that he was going to keep on giving space to people like Tucker Carlson. The Trump Administration is so completely beholden to the Israeli agenda, and Charlie Kirk, whether it's accurate or not, is being upheld now as a voice of dissent on that. What do you make of that?
