Donald Trump on Monday dropped his $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue
Service over a leak of his personal and business tax records, a bizarre case of a sitting
president suing his own government and essentially acting as both plaintiff and defendant.
This comes amid reports that Trump's Department of Justice was considering settling the
case in exchange for the creation of a $1.7 billion fund to compensate victims of so-called
weaponization of the DOJ under the Biden and Obama administrations. Trump allies who
participated in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol could file claims and be
compensated. "They want a $1.7 billion slush fund, which comes to a million dollars a
head in terms of Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, the insurrectionists, with $100 million left
over of taxpayer money to spread around in different ways," says Congressmember Jamie
Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, who spoke with
Democracy Now! shortly before news broke of Trump dropping the IRS lawsuit. Raskin last
week introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which is geared toward curbing the
president's profiteering from public office. "Corruption is the whole purpose of the Trump
administration," says Raskin. "It's not like some eccentric peripheral thing; it's a vast

Interest rates are rising as if this will simply compensate investors for the risk of inflation.
The reality is that it will increase the economy’s inability to cope with the breakdown that is
already in progress.
How Did the Myth of Interest Rates Rising in Response to Price Inflation Begin?
The moral rationalization is to protect the purchasing power of creditor claims on debtors,
as measured by the purchasing power of debt payments over consumer prices.
The pretense is that creditors use their interest to buy goods and services. But already in
the 18th century, critics of debt financing recognized that bondholders recycle most of their
money into new loans. When they do spend part of their interest income into the “real”
non-financial economy, it is mainly to buy prestige real estate, primarily in major financial
centers, and secondly on luxury goods – mainly imported, in Italy in the mid-18th century,
just as today.
By the 19th century, creditors sought some excuse to justify their interest charges by
depicting these as compensation for the risk that they might have to suffer a loss through
loan defaults or by a loss of their purchasing power over goods and services as prices
rose – and more to the point, over the labor that produced these products.
Austrian economists such as Böhm-Bawerk went so far as to claim that interest was a
payment for the “service” of abstaining from consuming their income, but using “time
preference” to consume more later. Having to pay interest, thus was depicted as the price
of “impatience.” It was as if wage earners (“consumers”) had a choice to abstain from
running into debt, lacking prudence. This prompted Marx to quip that the Rothschild
bankers must be the most abstinent family in Europe. It was as if there was no financial
sector of bankers and bondholders acting independently of the economy of production and
consumption.
Raising Interest Rates to Slow Employment and Keep Wages Low
The more recent 20th-century logic is that of Paul Volcker, when he increased interest
rates to over 20% at the end of the Carter administration in 1980. He saw wages rising as
a result of the Vietnam War’s “guns and butter” fiscal policy, called military Keynesianism
in times when the aim is to increase profits, investment and employment. Volcker, formerly
a Chase Manhattan banker, wanted to increase unemployment so as to keep wages from
rising further. He succeeded in creating a crash as bank interest rates rose to 20%.
That obviously is not the aim of today’s rise in interest rates. But it is the effect. And this is
just the opposite of compensating for risk. It sharply increases economic risk throughout
the economy, not only for industry and employment but for the financial sector. That is
what makes today’s high stock market prices so puzzling, a short-term focus on just riding
the wave of rumors floated by the Trump administration about the likelihood of peace
restoring the happy status quo ante.

The top investment officer of the nation’s largest teachers’ pension fund actively dissuaded state workers from divesting from underperforming and ecologically devastating fossil fuel investments — then went on to buy and sell more than $1 million in oil and gas stocks, state records obtained by The Lever show.
Scott Chan, the chief investment officer for the 1 million-member, $390 billion California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), began trading fossil fuel stocks in 2023 — the year after he told the teachers that divesting from the sector could potentially result in a $20 billion loss for the fund.
CalSTRS, and the larger state workers’ pension fund, often acts as a bellwether for other state pension funds. If the teachers’ fund had divested from fossil fuels, it could have signaled that the sector is not a reliable investment — and affected the stocks Chan subsequently invested in.
It’s why critics accuse Chan of prioritizing his own self-interest over workers’ retirement or the environment. In addition to fueling climate change, fossil fuel stocks have been found to routinely underperform other sectors — so much so that a 2023 study found that CalSTRS divesting from the energy sector could have resulted in more money for its members.
Chan’s stock trading is “disappointing to say the least,” said Deborah Silvey, a retired community college instructor and cofounder of Fossil Free California, a group of California pension fund members pushing both CalSTRS and the larger California Public Employees’ Retirement System to divest from fossil fuel companies.
“We’ve been working on [divestment] for over a decade, and what we’ve seen is climate chaos is more real than ever,” Silvey told The Lever. “We need to put our money where it should go and not in climate-damaging fuels.”
But Chan isn’t the only CalSTRS employee trading fossil fuel stocks.

The Israeli government is still holding a massive trove of video documentation of the Oct. 7 attack captured by individuals and communities caught up in the fighting. One bereaved parent even accuses Israeli authorities of deleting a video of her son’s last moments before returning his phone to her.
According to Israel’s Channel 13, “all the cameras, memory cards and films that documented the atrocities were collected, but two and a half years later, these materials have not been returned to the communities and bereaved families who are desperate for information, and even feel that someone is hiding it from them.”
Soon after Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, special units from the IDF, the Israeli intelligence agency Shin Bet and Israel’s investigation unit Lahav 433 collected photo and video documentation of the violence, confiscating cell phones, individual cameras, kibbutz security cameras and more.
“They disconnected what was needed, took it and moved on – that was the last time we saw the materials,” said an Israeli army reservist who participated in the collection mission.
According to the head of the Kfar Aza kibbutz – the site of a number of a series of atrocity hoaxes spun out in the early days after the attack – community members cooperated with investigators at the time. Now, years after the events, these families are wondering why documentation of their loved ones’ fates has yet to be returned to them.
Even Sabine Taasa, who was made an emblem of Israeli victimhood after her husband and one of her sons were killed on Oct. 7, is now clashing with Israeli authorities over footage of that day.
Taasa’s 17-year-old son, Or, was killed on Zikim beach. According to Channel 13, Taasa says she saw a video her son filmed in the moments leading up to his death, but when authorities returned his phone to her, no such video remained. The outlet says this is not an isolated incident.
An IDF probe found that soldiers abandoned civilians hiding in a bathroom there and then left their bodies for a week.
Channel 13 reports that Israeli police claimed Lahav 433 is still investigating the events in kibbutz Kfar Aza and no indictments have yet been filed, so returning evidence at this stage could jeopardize their criminal case. Meanwhile, the IDF rejected all accusations that it is withholding documentation and says it is in the final stages of adopting policies for how this type of evidence will be returned to communities and families.
On October 7, the Israeli government issued video Hannibal Directive orders which led Apache helicopter pilots and tank gunners to take aim at Israel’s own citizens in the Gaza envelope, supposedly to prevent them from being taken hostage. Israeli Brig. Gen. Barak Hiram personally ordered a tank crew to shell a home in Kibbutz Be’eri, knowing it was filled with Israeli citizens who had been taken captive by Hamas fighters seeking to negotiate a way out of the standoff. A dozen Israelis were killed in the strike, leaving behind “a house full of corpses,” according to the lone Israeli survivor. One Israeli tank gunner from an all-female unit similarly revealed that she was ordered to shell Israeli homes without knowing who was inside. An Israeli police investigation subsequently revealed that Israeli helicopters shelled the Nova Electronic Music festival on October 7.
Given Israel’s track record of targeting its own citizens on October 7 and misleading the public about it, the Israeli state might be holding on to as much video as possible to ensure no further evidence of the Israeli army massacring its own citizens is made public.
