Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
The study of history is a research into both the continuities and the ruptures with past periods of social organization. Ernst Fischer’s 1959 book, "The Necessity of Art, A Marxist Approach," is a classic example of what this method produces, and the understandings it offers class-conscious critics of contemporary society.
Below we offer a brief excerpt from this 20th-century art historian’s influential book, as an illustration of what the method of historical materialism can produce in the laboratory of thought experiments.
From "The Necessity of Art," by Ernst Fischer, 1964:
No one can deny that Christianity brought new ideas into the world. But we should not overlook the fact that, in the early centuries of our era, it belonged to antiquity even so far as its content was concerned. It competed with similar religions, such as the cults of Mithras, Isis, and Serapis –religions which also went far outside local boundaries and attempted to satisfy the Roman Empire’s thirst for religious unity. And Christianity, especially in its Alexandrian version, was extremely anxious to establish itself as a movement within antiquity and to associate itself both with the arts and the philosophy of antiquity. But none of this is directly relevant to our argument. Farner’s* main point, with which we must agree, is that new ideas may use old forms in order to express themselves in works of art.
Early Gothic saw a tremendous wealth of new social content and the rise of new social classes. The process had begun even earlier, in the late Romanesque period. The formal Romanesque world of feudal order was revolutionized. The rigid hierarchy in which there were no human beings but only ranks and castes collapsed. The unapproachable solemnity of feudal lords upon their thrones with vassals at their feet, the gold, red, and blue, the cold brilliance, the measured gestures of aristocratic supermen, all this gave way to the ecstatic realism of the early Gothic and late Romanesque art. Christ suffering and tormented, Christ akin to the common people in his poverty and ugliness, displaced the feudal ruler of the heavenly hosts. Mary the Maid, defender of the insulted and injured, took the place of the Queen of Heaven seated in splendor. And in late Romanesque sculpture, Lazarus was already a central figure, an indictment of the arrogance of the rich and powerful, of the gluttons and the voluptuaries, of the flesh with its pride and its vices. Dogs lick the festering wounds of Lazarus, but the angel is approaching who will lead him into paradise, and death and the devil are preparing a grisly end for Dives, the rich man. The death of Dives is depicted with a fury of avenging fantasy: a demon snatches his soul out of his mouth, and another taunts him with his moneybag, an infernal swarm of monsters, birds, dragons, serpents falls upon him to carry his lacerated body down to hell. Friedrich Heer wrote in The Rise of Europe:
Other carvings close by [on the portal of Molssac] depict the punishment of rich men and other sinners in hell. There is the miser writhing on the ground and crouching on his hands and feet like a quadruped; his back is twisted towards the ground, his moneybag is at his side, whilst a satan made up of both human and animal limbs and attended by two devils sinks a claw deep into his body…. The femme aux serpents, naked, with snakes and toads sucking at her breasts is a frequent motif in the propaganda of this popular art as the embodiment of the vice of lechery. . . .
Friedrich Heer, a Catholic writer, fully understood how the new art that swept away both the content and the form of feudal Romanesque traditions was conditioned by the social changes and upheavals of the age. Many thousands of landless peasants were on the move, and with them all kinds of other ‘wandering folk’, runaway monks, pilgrims, students, and vagabonds. The growing power of money was undermining the very structure of feudal society. A new, self-confident class of townspeople, forerunners of the bourgeoisie, was growing up; a new stratum of society, that of the minor gentry, was beginning to develop; large number of working men were concentrated for the first time in the workshops of the early mediaeval textile industry; the social movement of townspeople and minor gentry, peasants and proletarians turned the Bible into a weapon against the rulers and the world and created a militant heretical body; Abelard and others invoked the Holy Ghost in their struggle against feudal conformism and appealed to the traditions of antiquity against dogmatism and the power of the hierarchy; the influence of Arabic culture further added to the ferment of minds; the embryo of the bourgeois revolution began to stir in the womb of Christian Europe.
The creation of urban building fraternities was one of the symptoms of the new age, and the fraternities themselves became the transmitters of a new style. Heer may be exaggerating when he claims that in the crusading enthusiasm of the building movement, the old world of the feudal Middle Ages was melted down and recast’. But the significance of this movement as an element in a broader social trend is self-evident. Heer points out that ‘the great turning-point can be seen in individual works and also in the range of subjects’.
At St Julien-en-Brioude, two stone-masons confront us: sturdily realistic faces with rough-hewn features. . . . For the first time in the history of Europe, new strata of society demand to be heard, or rather, at first, to be seen. . . . The dynamism of a new ‘people’, of new masses, struggles for expression. And now we begin to find representation of real crowd scenes –as for instance in the crypt of the cathedral at Clermont-Ferrand. Common people of all kinds, big and small, crowd round Christ who is performing the miracle of loaves and fishes. Their hands are outstretched for bread he is giving them. These figures are drawn with a drastic realism, their gestures and faces outlined with large, firm strokes. Here the mild, sturdy, kindly Christ is already a true ‘people’s Christ”. . . .
And so, as Romanesque changes to Gothic, as pure feudalism gives way to a social situation in which the bourgeoisie can make advance after advance, a new social content fills the arts and produces new forms and means of expression, the new art being partly realistic and partly ecstatic; The long process of the secularization of the arts has begun –with songs of the troubadours, with the introduction of popular realism into the visual arts, with the humanization of the Christ figure, with the dawn of reason and of individual protest within the framework of the Christian philosophy. The style which had idealized and glorified the feudal world, recognizing only rank and order but not human relationships, became incompatible with the new social movements and upheavals. The new classes’ need for expression demanded new means. If we observe the spread of Gothic, we see that realistic or even naturalistic methods were used wherever the common people began to play a part in the visual arts. The findings of modern research seem to indicate that the art of primitive classless society started with a primitive naturalism;‘stylization’ and abstraction gained the upper hand only in the late Stone Age and were prominent thereafter in all aristocratic systems of government, while contrary movements always originated among the plebeian strata. In Gothic –the first ‘bourgeois’ movement in art within the still-existing feudal system- the result was highly contradictory: on the one hand a violent, extremely daring realism, on the other fervent longing for a spiritual, non-material life, for escape from the ‘valley of tears’ into the beyond. The towers of the Gothic cathedral pointing towards infinity are in themselves ambivalent- an expression of heaven-storming defiance and, at the same time; of an ecstatic yearning for redemption. The social strata dreaming of deliverance were still bound to the feudal system and its traditions. This is what gave rise to the profoundly contradictory nature of Gothic art, so much admired for its boldness, so much abused for its ‘barbarian’ absurdities. But above all Gothic meant the humanization of sacred themes, although this essential element is partly obscured by grim devilish monsters and a passionate transcendentalism.(pp.143-146)

The following 26+ items present descriptions and analyses of the historic systemic rupture we are now living. The extreme concentration of wealth has produced political abuses of historic dimensions, and the concept of class struggle plays a key role for any understanding of what is happening around us and its penetration into our private lives. Without an awareness of the historic role played by class struggles in the past, we are lost like a babe in the woods, born only yesterday, and at the mercy of the elements. Such naiveté is often fatal. A study of the continuities and ruptures in the past –both of long duration, and short term—offers us material to compare and contrast in order to make an accurate map of contemporary events that surround us, before they engulf us.

Robin Lloyd of WILPF in Burlington was friends with Garry Davis and told more of his story. Time moved on and I lost connection with this inspired fanatic to his end.

On Macro N Cheese, we often focus on economics – how society organizes real resources, and human life in general. We always seek ways to get our message out, to capture people’s imagination and motivate them. This week Steve talks to the director/producer of The World is My Country, a documentary about Garry Davis, who inspired and motivated millions of people as founder of the World Government of World Citizens. Garry Davis was a song and dance man on his way to becoming a success in show business until the US entered World War II and he was drafted. He served as a fighter pilot, dropping bombs on Hitler’s armament facilities with enthusiasm. When he was ordered to bomb a city of civilians, the realization hit: “Oh, my God. Why am I killing people in their homes and schools and factories for no other reason than they’re on the wrong side of an invisible line? I look from my airplane. I can’t see this line. It’s imaginary. There’s an imaginary line. I’m killing people for being on the wrong side of an imaginary line.” Davis created a Universal Declaration of Human Rights and set up the World Service Authority to issue world passports, world IDs, and world birth certificates. More than four million of these documents have been issued and over the years they’ve helped numerous stateless refugees escape from terrible situations. As Arthur recounts Garry’s story, sometimes it’s hard to separate his own beliefs from Garry’s. No matter. Truths are truths. Nowadays any war – even a small, tactical war – means ecocide. And now we have just a semblance of democracy. But it’s not a real democracy. It’s not what anybody wants. All the things that are happening in the world, nobody wants. Nobody wants us to be heading toward nuclear war. Nobody wants climate disaster. Nobody wants rising waters, floods, storms, tornadoes. Those are ecocide. Those are crimes, folks. This isn’t happening because of some accident of nature or something. Garry found it ridiculous that our political system is stuck within the electoral tools and traditions of the past – before telephones, computers, internet – when the way to run a government was to send representatives by horse and buggy to represent the citizenry. Now we can all be in a room, virtually, via synergistic Zoom meetings, and could be more directly involved and represented. It was part of Garry’s design for a “People Powered Planet.” Arthur Kanegis is President of Future WAVE, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to shifting our culture of violence to a culture of peace. This is a book for adults carried by the voices of children. The children of Gaza are its moral narrators. They speak of what they loved, what they lost, and what they tried to save. Their language is deliberately simple, because childhood does not diminish truth; it often reveals it more clearly. The narrative combines documented history with literary reconstruction. Hind Rajab was a real child, and the circumstances surrounding her final calls for help are part of the public record. Other named children and family figures in the tale—including Nour, Iman, Tariq, Ibrahim, Sitti, Ahmad, and Um Khaled—are literary characters or composite figures unless an endnote expressly identifies a documented individual. They were created from recurring experiences, testimonies, images, objects, and conditions reported in Gaza.
The teacher, the reporter, and the surgeon are likewise composite figures. They represent documented forms of civilian courage: continuing to teach after the destruction of educational institutions, reporting amid bereavement and danger, and treating the wounded under extreme shortages of electricity, fuel, medicines, equipment, and safe hospital space. No invented dialogue should be read as a verbatim historical quotation unless an endnote states otherwise. Two principles govern these pages.
The story belongs to literature. It is the place where memory breathes, where silence is given shape, and where hope survives without denying grief. The endnotes belong to history. They distinguish documented events from literary reconstruction, identify the status of testimony, acknowledge uncertainty where it exists, and record material denials or competing accounts when they form part of the public record. The purpose is neither to soften reality nor to magnify it.
It is to allow literature and historical integrity to walk together. Whenever a child’s voice suddenly falls silent, the silence is not offered as spectacle. It marks the limit beyond which the tale refuses to invent. The empty place remains where it belongs.

A third widely-held belief is that politicians and officers directing the war strategy for your country (or group) are interested in minimizing casualties among your own population.

Born into the famous Krupp family, Alfried inherited a business empire that had supplied weapons, steel, and heavy industry to Germany for generations. As Adolf Hitler rose to power, Krupp positioned himself close to the regime and became an important figure within Germany’s expanding military economy. His factories produced tanks, artillery, submarines, armour plating, and essential equipment used across multiple fronts during the Second World War. As the conflict expanded eastward following Operation Barbarossa, demand for labour increased dramatically. This documentary explores how prisoners of war, deported civilians, and concentration camp inmates became an increasingly important part of Krupp production. Evidence presented after the war revealed the scale of forced labour used throughout the company’s enormous industrial network. The documentary also examines the company’s relationship with Auschwitz, the movement of prisoners into industrial production, and the role economic interests played in sustaining wartime manufacturing. It follows Krupp’s arrest after the collapse of Nazi Germany, the trials that followed, and the controversial decisions that allowed him to rebuild much of his fortune only a few years later. This is the story of wealth, industry, ideology, and the consequences of placing profit above humanity.

Fauci has appeared before congressional panels several times since the outset of the pandemic, that have regularly turned into partisan brawls among lawmakers.
