The conspiracy to disrupt the capacity for cognitive thought processes and to trivialize the scientific method is disreputable, but does it exist in objective reality?
During the Vietnam War the US sought to win the hearts and minds of the Vietnam people (or more precisely, to quote Lyndon Johnson, “Grab them by the balls and their hearts and minds will follow!”) We did not accomplish this.
Today’s war in Iran and the US proxy war in Ukraine, along with the class war conducted by billionaires and their corporate vassals against all of us –with the manufacture of the Covid “virus”(*) in a US state-sponsored bio-weapons laboratory, followed by mandatory “vaccinations” around the world containing toxic material which has already killed millions of people and is permanently crippling millions more. These predatory episodes of blatant mass homocide,(**) accompanied by a refined new technology of surveillance, have a history and a trajectory that only an awareness of class struggle(***) can unveil.
Meanwhile, we are invited by the numerous animators of corporatist culture to dabble in the “philosophy of the infinite” and indulge in the “mysteries” which have been evoked to ensnare us by enticing us to forfeit our birthright to the self-appointed supernatural supremacists whose aspiration it is to “reign in hell rather than to serve in heaven. . . .”
The following 26+ items taken from the Anglophone social media serve as current illustrations of topics of concern for millions of world citizens: The principles of “self-determination,” of “direct democracy” (as opposed to a phony “representative democracy”), and of “collective well-being” (as opposed to individual competition to gain private advantages and absolute leverage against the public interests of the collective). Today, the extreme degree of inequality that we are witnessing offers proof of its corrupting effect on the general population and on the institutions which govern us.
Our challenge is to find the courage to stand up together, demystified and on solid ground, and to say: “NO MORE!” to the the deluded "supremacists" who would destroy us with their avarice.

Alienation is one of the most consumed and least understood concepts of our time. It has been reduced to a therapeutic vocabulary, a mood, an affliction of the age.
In this interview, the Marxist theorist Bertell Ollman argues the opposite: alienation is not a feeling but a condition. It is not inside our heads; it is inside the relations of production. And the way to understand it runs not through human nature but through capitalism.
Over the course of the conversation, Ollman separates three distinct meanings of alienation — theological, psychological and Marxist; builds up Marx's four alienated relationships step by step; asks who the working class actually includes; looks for a dialectical answer to the epidemic of depression among young people; and shows how the words freedom, equality and justice have been hollowed out in the language of the advertising industry. The interview closes with a section on the financialised form imperialism takes today.
Bertell Ollman (1935–2024) taught political science at New York University for many years. Through Alienation: Marx's Conception of Man in Capitalist Society and Dance of the Dialectic, he became one of the most original writers on Marx's method. For roughly 25 years he refused to give his students exams — in this interview he explains why, in his own words.

The Trump Administration’s indictment of former Cuban President Raúl Castro, the deployment of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and warships, and recent measures pressuring countries not to supply oil to Cuba are all intended to force regime change on the island. These policies are part of the United States’ long-standing campaign against the Cuban government, codified in 1962 with the U.S. embargo on Cuba, and have created what could be described as Cuba’s “New Special Period,” comparable to the original “Special Period” in the 1990s after the loss of support from the Soviet Union. The Cuban revolution against the U.S.-backed Batista dictatorship has survived 64 of its 67 years under what U.S. officials call an “embargo.” Cubans call it “el bloqueo” (the blockade), arguing that its impact has been just as physically isolating as a military blockade. Suffering aside, the amount of money that the United States has spent on enforcing this policy of economic isolation—the longest blockade in history—could instead have been used to address pressing social needs throughout the United States. This raises the question: Was the blockade worth the cost? And if so, for whom?
According to Doctors Without Borders’ “The Practical Guide to Humanitarian Law,” a blockade is an act of war that seeks to isolate an adversary, disrupt economic activity, and prevent the movement of vital supplies. Under an embargo, a country prohibits its own companies or subsidiaries from engaging in business with another country, rather than interfering with third parties. Through what is essentially a broader economic blockade, the United States has intermittently prevented Cuba from commerce with other nations. As President Donald Trump has become even more strident, the United Nations has criticized his administration’s policy of imposing tariffs on any country that sends oil to Cuba as a serious violation of international law. Earlier this year, a military blockade was evident as “the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a tanker full of Colombian fuel oil en route to Cuba within 70 miles of the island,” according to the New York Times. The U.S. government knows that a blockade is an act of war, according to Connecticut
Congressperson Joe Courtney, who said in a recent press release, “The international law, actually, in terms of blockades, was established in 1909 at the London Naval Conference, which the U.S. participated in and the U.S. Senate actually voted to endorse, and it defined blockades as an act of war.”
That is why, until now, U.S. administrations have been so adamant about calling such sanctions an “embargo.” Understanding how this economic campaign against Cuba began, along with its impacts on Cuba and beyond, will help us better understand the current situation between the United States and Cuba.

“BRICS” has been around for over a decade. The term “multipolarity” on the other hand, has been bandied about for at least over half a century. “BRICS multipolarity” is sold as a counter-weight and dialectical response or solution to Western imperial globalism. But is it really?
It has been my belief for years that BRICS multipolarity is nothing more than the next logical progression and iteration of Western-directed globalism toward the long-planned and desired East-West convergence into a singular World Federation, World Government, and/or World State by the transnational class, which is principally stationed in the West, but has long-since penetrated the East. We are witnessing the onboarding of the East into the Western globalist-led one-world government, not the other way around.
For centuries the Third World or Global South have been disenfranchised by Western empire. Now has come the time to incorporate the Global South into the Western empire to at last complete the project for proper and total world empire.
There are no good guys here, no good actors. Every nation state is run by an oligarchic cartel and mafia, penetrated by the international class. Ask any average citizen of any country and many will tell you that yes, their government is corrupt and run by an oligarchy that extracts as much as it can for itself and cares nothing for its citizenry. That has been my experience living in America, Croatia, México, Kazakhstan, and visiting Russia.
The sleight of hand at play is to capitalize on the genuine feelings of righteous indignation, discontent, and disenfranchisement from the Global South as regards what Western empire has done to it for centuries, and provide them with a believable narrative and buy in where they’ll be convinced of their own accord to wittingly (or unwittingly) join the final sprint toward world empire and convergence of East and West. In other words, convincing them to buy the rope with which they’ll hang, along with the rest of us.

Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the early 5th century, the Eastern Roman Empire, centered in Constantinople, endured until 1453. It exercised enormous power over the known world at the time. It was replaced by an even more powerful empire ruled by the “New Romans,” as they called themselves. Their descendants continue to have a significant influence on world politics to this day.
Babylon became Rome followed by the Holy Roman Empire and Venetians (New Romans), morphing into the age of empires (e.g. Dutch, French, Spanish) and ultimately the British Empire (new global Rome). Pax Britannica gave way to Pax Americana (or the Anglo-American establishment) and today we might dub it the Anglo-American-EU Empire and/or latest iteration of Pax Romana. The CIA and State Department financed over fifty percent of European integration. We’ve come full circle.

A cratering yen has set off alarms on Wall Street and in financial centers around the world. If the Bank of Japan sells its behemoth stockpile US Treasuries (now exceeding $1.2 trillion) to support its sagging currency, the US bond market could go into a nosedive dragging the global economy off a cliff. That is why on Friday, July 31, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched an unprecedented currency intervention to prop up the anemic yen and to forestall an impending financial meltdown. Surprisingly, Bessent implemented a euros-for-yen trade via the New York Fed so as not to weaken the dollar or trigger a selloff in bonds.
The gravity of the intervention, however, was not lost on jumpy investors who have connected the dots and understand that America’s $40 trillion debt Ponzi is growing increasingly unstable and could trigger another financial crisis. In short, the teetering yen is merely the canary in the coal mine signaling deeper structural issues that could take down the entire dollar-based house of cards. This is from Forbes:
The wobbling Japanese yen could trigger a global financial crisis…. The yen recently reached a 40-year low against the dollar. The fear is that a further fall in the currency’s value will precipitate a crisis of confidence that will not only set off a serious bout of inflation inside Japan…. but also adversely impact financial markets around the world.
That’s why the U.S. and Japan just undertook a very rare joint intervention in currency markets to prop up the yen. In other words, both countries used dollars to buy the yen.
The intervention has had success. However , most experts believe the relief will be short-lived because of adverse fundamentals in Japan: a too-low short-term interest rate, which is 1% vs. around 3.5% in the U.S.; a national debt that is proportionately twice that of the U.S.; rising energy prices; and a declining and aging population.
The immediate worry for U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is that in an effort to save the yen from collapse, Japan will start liquidating its $1.1 trillion portfolio of Treasury bonds and bills, not to mention its holdings of German and British bonds. Such sales would put pressure on interest rates. After all, financing our immense budget deficits and refinancing some $7 trillion of our existing debt that’s coming up for renewal are already worrying the markets. This anxiety, for instance, is why the interest rate on our 30-year Treasury bond has reached its highest level in almost 20 years.
Bessent wants the Federal Reserve to beef up a facility it created in 2020 to deal with a dollar shortage caused by the pandemic and use it now to help the yen. He could also employ a Depression-era facility called the Exchange Stabilization Fund. The idea is that through these devices Japan could borrow dollars using its Treasury holdings as collateral. No sales necessary.
This help is nice, but there are better, more immediate ways to deal with the crisis. Japan should boost its utterly unrealistic short-term interest rate…. Another important thing that both the U.S. and Japan should do… is to announce that they want a stable rate between the dollar and the yen. They might even give a range of, say, 150 to 155 yen to the dollar and make clear that the two countries would massively intervene in the exchange markets to keep it there. Japan would, if necessary, reduce the supply of yen to keep it in that range. These steps would quash the immediate crisis. Japan’s Wobbling Yen Could Trigger A Global Financial Crisis, Forbes
The United States and Japan are already massively meddling in the market to scare off short sellers who don’t think market fundamentals support a strong yen. In effect, Bessent is saying that if they bet against the yen, they will be crushed by the combined firepower of the Fed and its ally in Japan. In other words, anyone who invests believing that the market is “free and fair” will be clobbered.
Second, the “facility” to
which Forbes refers, is another Fed-generated bailout outfit similar to ones
created during the Great Financial Crisis.
It is called The Foreign and International Monetary Authorities Repo Facility
or FIMA which is operated through the Federal Reserve Bank of New York “To help
prop up the yen with dollar loans” in order to discourage Japan from dumping
its US debt.
Simply put, it’s a bailout facility. The Fed is issuing dollar-backed loans to prevent the market from rebalancing and to avoid a catastrophic sell-off of US debt that could put the global financial system into downward death spiral.
But will all this meddling work? . . . .

According to L’Orient, Sehnaoui is now actively seeking to manipulate Lebanese public opinion by lavishly funding local outlets including French-speaking Ici Beyrouth, English-language This Is Beirut, and Hunna Lubnan in Arabic. The report also built on local reports indicating the mysterious Sehnaoui has been wielding a fascist Christian militia to protect his banking empire and reputation.
After photos emerged in late July showing the financier cavorting with Israeli Prime Minister and international fugitive Benjamin Netanyahu at a private gathering in Washington DC, Sehnaoui has been publicly denounced by his uncle as a willing tool of Israel. One year ago, the Trump administration brought 800 National Guard troops to occupy the streets of Washington, D.C., part of the “Safe and Beautiful Task Force.” There are now approximately 5,000 troops from 15 states deployed here, with some officially moved in and set to stay through 2029.
This does not include the alphabet soup of law enforcement agencies swarming our neighborhoods across the city, from ICE to the FBI, Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, Drug Enforcement Agency, Park Police, and more.
The National Guard can be found meandering around metro stations, museums, and grocery stores there for mere posture. Despite crime being down before they were deployed here. A new analysis from the Center for American Progress found the Guard deployment has not had a measurable impact on violent crime. They are not even trained in “civilian policing,” and are unable to make actual arrests.
“This was never about reducing crime, especially not violent crime,” said Chandler Hall, who wrote the study. “This has been a show of force without any evidence to bear that it’s actually working.”
The cost of the Guard is estimated at $3 million a day, with some troops said to make close to $9,000 a month, including salary, lodging, and food per diem. It is hard to track the multi-year total in billions of dollars as the administration is far from transparent with the process.
The wasteful spending from the Department of War is unsurprising. Despite the Pentagon never passing an audit, the Department of War’s proposed budget is record-breaking at $1.5 trillion for one year and does not include the recent billions for the Iran war and additional billions to Israel to further the genocide in Gaza and ongoing destruction in Lebanon.
Some of the reasoning for more troops in D.C. was for the Freedom 250 nationalism events, beginning with a UFC fight, State Fair, and 4th of July festivities, all of which were disastrous, from cancellations, evacuations, and heat strokes to stage parts falling, nearly killing performers. The millions of dollars that went into these spectacles strained the local community. On July 4, my friend Nicky, a 71-year-old EMT, worked an 18-hour double shift for $27 an hour while constant military flyovers cost over $1.2 million.
Karen Degraphenreid, a veteran of the US Air Force as a Major of 10 years, got involved with Free DC when the military occupation in D.C. began. She describes her reflections from her time overseas to experiencing the guard takeover here at home.
“Washington is the only place in the country where more than 700,000 American citizens can have troops deployed to their streets by leaders they have no voting representation in choosing. We pay federal taxes, serve in the military, and fulfill every obligation of citizenship, yet Congress can override our local government and impose decisions that fundamentally reshape life in our city. That reality forced me to reconsider what ‘protection’ actually means,” she said.
“Many of my neighbors never asked for soldiers outside their neighborhoods. Many openly opposed their presence. To them, the deployment did not feel like reassurance. It felt like a federal government exercising power over a city that has long been denied full democratic self-government.
And that realization led me to a question I had never seriously asked during my years in uniform.
If my neighbors could experience military protection as something imposed upon them, what did civilians overseas think when American forces arrived in their communities? When we said we were bringing security and stability, did they experience it as protection? Or did they see armed strangers exercising power over places that belonged to them?”
Karen is also a member of Common Defense, which holds trainings for veterans to verbally confront the National Guard. Other veterans are speaking out to encourage their fellows and active-duty members to do the same. Groups like About Face have been welcoming anti-war veterans to become more organized for years, many of whom were deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, and are actively opposed to the genocide in Gaza and the war on Iran.

Libya was plunged into fresh turmoil this week after a car bomb killed eastern military intelligence chief Fawzi al-Mansouri in Benghazi, drone attacks struck the country’s largest operational oil refinery and the central bank governor resigned from his post.
Mansouri, the military intelligence chief for forces controlling eastern Libya, was leaving a mosque on Monday night when an explosive device attached to his vehicle detonated, the Libyan National Army (LNA) said on Tuesday.
Khaled Haftar, the son of the LNA renegade commander Khalifa Haftar who controls eastern Libya, said authorities had opened an investigation, adding that "indicators point to a despicable terrorist tactic".
"Terrorism is a project targeting the entire region, not just Libya," the statement added.
While no group has taken responsibility for the attack, Hamish Kinnear, principal Middle East and North Africa analyst at risk intelligence company Verisk Maplecroft, told Middle East Eye that "it is a reminder that security in eastern Libya remains fragile despite the domination of Khalifa Haftar’s LNA”.

In a Double Down News (DDN) video report, British filmmaker Richard Sanders begins a summary of a “horrific new [United Nations] report” with a listing of three atrocities committed by Israeli forces against Palestinian children. Sanders tells of an infant who was shot in the head while breastfeeding in his mother’s arms, a 16-year-old boy whose body was mutilated by an Israeli tank, and teenage boys deliberately shot by Israeli soldiers in a game of “target practice.”
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry released the report on June 23. Titled “The Essence of Childhood Has Been Destroyed,” it was the first to focus on crimes and violations against Palestinian children in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Vijay Prashad at CounterPunch called it an “accusation of extraordinary gravity.” In 100-pages, the investigation documents Israeli security forces’ direct killing, degrading, and inhumane treatment of Palestinian children, including sexual and gender-based violence and torture. The report also documents the destruction of schools and civilian infrastructure and amounts to a gruesome compendium of how Israel is destroying Palestinian childhood and denying the Palestinian people a future and self-determination. As the human rights lawyer Srinivasan Muralidhar, who chaired the UN commission and led the press conference that announced its findings, bluntly summarized, “By targeting children, Israel is attacking the very capacity of the Palestinian people to exist.” This is genocide.
The UN report flatly contradicted the claims made by President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace that conditions in Gaza were improving. The UN report stated that the amount of available aid is woefully inadequate to meet the needs of hungry, wounded people, living in appalling conditions, who are being squeezed into 30 percent of what was once the Gaza Strip. The UN report further noted the admission of one Israeli soldier: “It feels like a game. You can sit in some basement of a house, safe, with your helmet off, scratching your balls, half-dressed, and kill Palestinians.”
The new report sits atop an ever-expanding mass of documentation of Israeli war crimes committed since October 7, 2023. This trove consists of journalistic documentation, investigations compiled by the UN and other aid agencies, and by human rights lawyers who have corroborated the testimonies of victims of sexual torture with forensic evidence of their broken bodies. It includes damning evidence from Israeli soldiers themselves, who have recorded their crimes as they committed them and subsequently posted those recordings online. The combined record of evidence includes visuals of massacres, satellite footage, and audio recordings of specific events such as the January 2024 killing of five-year-old Hind Rajab, as documented by Forensic Architecture. Journalists bear witness, with corroborating evidence, to seeing their colleagues killed by targeted Israeli strikes. Compilations of detailed refutations of falsified Israeli “pseudo-evidence” produced to deny its crimes must also be considered a significant part of this trove. In short, as many have observed, the genocide in Gaza is the most well-documented in history.

The nation was headed for a high Masonic dissolution in which “one nation under God” would be replaced by “one nation under…(name the fake virus here.)
I found the article on Peter Duesberg’s site. I stand corrected. I apparently called it a “demon.” I could have sworn I called it a “deity.” Eventually I will find the original, to be sure, but both words support my thesis.

A brilliant piece from A Midwestern Doctor, built around my book, The War on Chlorine Dioxide, exposed the long trail of suppression around inexpensive, safe, broadly effective therapies.
If more people in our society understood this history, and how it is still occurring, one of two things could happen. One, the system could change (not). Or two, people could seek out reliable information they could use to protect their own and their families’ health, rather than relying on the high priests and priestesses of the medical religion, with their often terrible and very narrow therapeutic armamentarium. I ain’t holding my breath for the first. So, alongside AMD, I work toward the second.
From early on in Covid, I had one goal: that every cupboard in America hold ivermectin, for the whole family. Dreaming like that hasn’t changed, only the compounds have. Now my goal is for every cupboard to hold both chlorine dioxide and DMSO (mine does), two “umbrella therapies,” meaning each has numerous mechanisms of action and can treat a broad range of diseases, can be purchased online, and people can (and must) educate themselves to use, I believe safely, and far safer than most pharmaceuticals. DMSO has more mechanisms of action than chlorine dioxide; but several of those of chlorine dioxide, particularly against infectious illness, are far more potent.
There’s a more personal reason I care about this, too. For reasons I won’t get into here, I’ve come to see our medical system as an institution in serious decline, but now declining the way so many other institutions of society are declining right now, and, in the years since Covid, the hospital system has hardened into something even more rigid, protocolized, and unthinking than what I trained in. As my readers know, I now suffer from nosocomophobia, the fear of hospitals (a real and documented condition). Since Covid and my excommunication from “the system,” a daily, unspoken goal of my life is to avoid the hospital at nearly all costs. I’ve told my wife that the only way I’m going is if I’m unconscious, so she would have to call the ambulance herself.

The story taking shape is just another excuse to label, limit or ban content as they deem necessary.
A few days ago, I wrote an article highlighting the bizarre story of OpenAI AND Anthropic AND Meta all suddenly claiming to have “rogue AI agents” escape their “containment” and try to hack other companies in the space of a week or two.
Two days after that I penned the sequel, noting the even more extreme “scary AI” stories – from mind-reading computers to bio-engineered viruses – that were manifesting all over the media landscape, and the massive surge in “regulate AI” hot takes.
Consider this the final part of the “Rogue AI” trilogy.
If you’re not seeing the pattern yet there’s not much more I can do, and I’m running out of ways to say the same thing in slightly different words.
Anyway…what’s new to the AI propaganda storm since the last time we chatted?
New Orleans is going to start using AI for 911 calls. That sounds a little shady, doesn’t it?
OpenAI’s chief ethical consultant has resigned, that’s a sure sign they’re doing evil stuff. Your ethics officer doesn’t resign unless something bad is going down </sarc>.
The latest “disclosure” (read “made up nonsense”) from the AI sector is that multiple rogue agents (allegedly) “colluded” on secret message boards to figure out the best ways to cheat the tests they were given.
It’s possible a small Israeli company might to be blame for all of this, just to make sure there’s something for everyone on the scary AI propaganda buffet.
Boy George supposedly used AI to write his new pro-Israel song, so how’s that for your double whammy.
On the sillier side of “scary AI” news, did you hear about the AI agent that hacked a gym’s membership to get its owner an appointment? Or that google AI leaked “scarily accurate” data about an indie game that hadn’t been released yet? Or that people are doing job interviews with AI agents in the middle of the night?
Stories like this are a sign we’ve entered what you could call the “propaganda free for all” stage. Those moments when ANY story, no matter how inane or insane, is given air time just because it might end up serving the greater goal (see: Covid sniffer dogs, for example).
But these are a symptom, not a disease. Little propaganda pilot fish swimming around a shark.

The political reaction to the Ceuta migration crisis showed just how quickly border events become vehicles for much broader themes. At a time when some Europeans have grown weary of Donald Trump, Elon Musk and JD Vance dismissing or belittling Europe, it was easy to interpret the episode as another attempt to portray European governments as weak and divided on migration.
That made the response from parts of Europe particularly striking. Italy, Denmark and Greece were surprisingly quick to criticise Spain during what increasingly appeared to be a migration crisis with a far more complex backstory than headlines initially suggested. Italy’s intervention was especially disingenuous given that Italy has borne the greatest burden of Mediterranean migration for years, receiving far larger numbers of arrivals. Political divisions deepened sufficiently for the European Union to gather together an emergency meeting of interior ministers, while Commission President Ursula von der Leyen publicly defended Spain and stressed European solidarity.
Within forty-eight hours, most of the estimated 60,000 migrants had reportedly returned to Morocco, many voluntarily and others escorted by Spanish authorities. The “invasion”, as the European right described it, proved considerably less dramatic than early political rhetoric suggested. Nevertheless, dozens died during the episode, making it a profound human tragedy. Spain has since reinforced the border with an additional floating sea barrier.
The circumstances remain contested. Some officials, analysts and media reports began suggesting Moroccan authorities had relaxed border enforcement or quietly encouraged movement towards Ceuta, something Rabat has rejected. Several migrants interviewed by international media claimed police directed them towards the frontier.
The impression left across much of Europe was that the crisis had rapidly become politicised. Whatever its immediate causes, political actors had quickly crowbarred the story into pre-existing narratives. Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf travelled to Ceuta, claiming excitedly that he had already spoken to Moroccan migrants hoping ultimately to reach Britain—a remark that reflected how rapidly the episode had been woven into others’ migration debates.
Numerous explanations emerged. Some reflected genuine diplomatic tensions between Spain and Morocco. Others circulated primarily through social media, alleging Israeli retaliation over Spain’s support for Palestine, American pressure following disagreements with Madrid, or Moroccan anger over Spain’s expanding relationship with Algeria. Some suggested these interests had converged.
Each contained enough plausibility to attract attention. Yet the importance of distinguishing genuine conspiracies from conspiracy theories remained. States can play the darkest of games, but suspicion alone does not evidence make.
A fully satisfied Trump argued that Europe was finally experiencing the consequences of migration policies he had long criticised. Across Europe’s far right, politicians blamed Pedro Sánchez’s allegedly permissive immigration policies. Sánchez instead argued that organised trafficking networks had lured migrants with false promises that they would be allowed to remain in Spanish territory. Throughout the crisis he was careful to avoid publicly accusing Morocco despite the obvious diplomatic strain.
The geography of the crisis seemed widely misunderstood. Ceuta has remained under Portuguese and subsequently Spanish sovereignty since 1415, remaining with Spain after Portugal regained independence in the seventeenth century. Although part of both Spain and the European Union, Ceuta occupies a unique legal position. Entry into the enclave does not provide unrestricted access to mainland Spain, and those who entered had neither crossed the Strait of Gibraltar nor acquired any realistic prospect of reaching continental Europe.
One intriguing intervention came from Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. During March 2026 he published a series of striking opinion pieces urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump to reconsider longstanding American policy towards Ceuta and Melilla. Rubin argued that Washington should recognise the enclaves as occupied territory and later suggested Morocco could replicate elements of the 1975 Green March strategy, while questioning whether NATO’s Article 6 protections would necessarily apply. Although Rubin was writing in a personal capacity rather than articulating official policy, Moroccan media portrayed his articles as evidence that figures close to Rubio were advocating a significant shift in Washington’s position.
Around the same time, Congressman Thomas Massie highlighted language contained not in legislation itself but in the accompanying House Appropriations Committee report describing Ceuta and Melilla as territories “under the illegal claim” of Morocco. Massie argued this reflected congressional support for reconsidering American policy, although others noted that committee report language neither alters US foreign policy nor binds the executive branch. Even so, the episode showed that questions surrounding the Spanish enclaves had begun surfacing in parts of Washington where they had rarely surfaced before.
The images also jarred with Morocco’s efforts to project itself as a confident, modernising country. Previous research I conducted on Morocco highlighted the restlessness of many younger Moroccans, particularly those associated with the ‘Gen Z 212’ movement, while also illustrating how cautiously even well-informed observers discussed King Mohammed VI.
Online, considerably broader interpretations continued to proliferate. Some social-media users alleged increasingly coordinated pressure involving the United States, Israel, Morocco and elements of Europe’s far right designed to destabilise Spain’s Socialist government, while others connected the episode to domestic legal challenges facing Sánchez’s family. These claims gained traction online but remained unsupported with evidence.
Other commentators focused instead on Spain’s deteriorating relations with Israel and Washington, pointing again to Madrid’s recognition of the State of Palestine, its heavy criticism of Israeli military operations, restrictions on arms shipments through Spanish ports and reported disagreements over the use of American military facilities.
Others placed the Strait of Gibraltar at the heart of the story. Around ten per cent of global maritime trade passes through this strategic choke point. Some commentators argued, in an age of new choke points, that strengthening Moroccan strategic capabilities could ultimately shift the regional balance of influence around the Strait of Gibraltar.
In January 2026, Israel and Morocco signed a joint military action plan. According to defence industry reporting, Israel has become Morocco’s largest defence supplier, while Morocco is significantly expanding its domestic drone industry with Israeli assistance. Reports suggest that a joint maritime surveillance centre is being developed on Morocco’s northern coast.
