It features excerpts from My Country, Africa by Andrée Blouin, Congo Inc. by In Koli Jean Bofane, To Katanga and Back by Conor Cruise O'Brien, and audio memoirs by Nikita Khrushchev.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 22.
It won the André Cavens Award for Best Film from the Belgian Film Critics Association. At the 97th Academy Awards, it was nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film.
The film has also won Best Art Film at the Rose d'Or awards in 2025 and was considered the third best documentary of all time by Harper's Bazaar.
One February morning in 1961, singer Abbey Lincoln and drummer Max Roach protested at the UN Security Council after the murder of Patrice Lumumba, prime minister of the newly independent Congo. Sixty yelling protesters throw punches, slam their stilettos, and provoke a skirmish with unprepared guards as diplomats look on in shock.
Six months earlier, sixteen newly independent African countries are admitted to the United Nations, shifting the majority vote away from the old colonial powers. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev speaks in opposition to the neo-colonial power grab unfolding in the Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville) (modern DR Congo). Denouncing America's color bar and UN complicity in the overthrow of Lumumba, he demands immediate decolonization worldwide.
To retain control over the riches of what used to be the Belgian Congo, King Baudouin of Belgium finds an ally in the Eisenhower administration, which fears losing access to one of the world's biggest known reserves of uranium, a metal vital for the creation of atomic bombs. Congo-Léopoldville takes center stage to both the Cold War and the scheme for control of the UN. The U.S. State Department swings into action: jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong is dispatched to win the hearts and minds of Africa. Unwittingly, Armstrong becomes a smokescreen to divert attention from Africa's first post-colonial coup, leading to the assassination of Congo's first democratically elected leader. Malcolm X stands up in open support of Lumumba and his efforts to create a United States of Africa while also reframing the freedom struggle of African Americans as one not for civil rights, but for human rights, aiming to bring his case before the UN.
As Black jazz ambassadors are performing unaware amidst covert CIA operatives, the likes of Armstrong, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Melba Liston face a painful dilemma: how to represent a country where segregation is still the law of the land.
Jazz and decolonization are entwined in this forgotten episode of the Cold War, where the greatest musicians stepped onto the political stage, and politicians lent their voices as inadvertent lead singers. This story of the undermining of African self-determination is told from the perspective of Central African Republic women's rights activist and politician Andrée Blouin, Irish diplomat and enfant terrible Conor Cruise O'Brien, Belgian-Congolese writer In Koli Jean Bofane, and Nikita Khrushchev.

Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
Rereading Ernst Fischer’s 1959 book, The Necessity of Art, A Marxist Approach, I’ve made many discoveries recently, not the least of which, to quote Fischer, is that: "Art is necessary in order that man should be able to recognize and change the world. But art is also necessary by virtue of the magic inherent in it."
The final chapter of this richly endowed book is entitled “The Loss and Discovery of Reality,” where the author makes one of many provocative discoveries that echo through hollow shell of today’s alienated existence. He writes:
Ludwig Tieck, the German Romantic, first spoke of
the ‘loss of reality’ in the preface to his edition of Heinrich von Kleist’s
works.
The industrialized, commercialized capitalist world
has become an outside world of impenetrable material connections and
relationships.
Illusion displaces contradiction. The outcome of a
multitude of ‘points of view’ is a hideous uniformity of minds. The answer
precedes the question.
‘I am convinced,’ wrote the Austrian satirist Karl
Kraus, ‘that happenings no longer happen; instead, the clichés operate
spontaneously.
Once again [Karl
Kraus wrote about the press] a tool has got out of our control. We have set the
man who is meant
to report the fire –a
man who should surely play the most subordinate part in the whole State- above
the State,
above the fire and
the burning house, above fact and above our imagination.
That was written half a century ago. Since then the process of ‘destroying reality’ has made alarming advances.Many of the sincerest and most gifted artists and writers in the capitalist world are conscious of this loss of reality. They refuse to be led astray by outdated formulas and catchpenny phrases. They refuse to accept the system forced upon them by the ruling ‘public opinion’ as reality; they insist on seeing things ‘as they are’. They detest all forms of propaganda, distrust all ideologies, they go out in search of reality beyond the illusory world of pseudo-facts, phrases, and conventions. They are determined to speak only of what they can see, hear, touch, or directly perceive. They cling to the smallest detail, the visible, audible, unchallengeable ‘real’ detail. Anything that goes beyond such details is suspect to them. Out of them they try, cautiously and without comment, to reconstruct reality. The widespread movement of neo-positivism is not wholly negative: it corresponds in part to a wish for unprejudiced sincerity.
In his fight against the fulsomeness of the late bourgeois novel and in his search for economy, purity, and lightness of form, Franz Kafka developed a narrative method whereby tiny details are linked together to make faint contours that hint at reality.

This principle of allowing the status of reality only to the ‘small true fact, the true detail’ … has been carried to an extreme in the French ‘anti-novel. Detail follows detail, two-dimensionally, without perspective, without ever going beyond the Here and Now.

This emphasized detachment and coldness are a refusal to recognize any priority among objects, feelings, or events. The consequence of such understatement is, however, that material relationships acquire exaggerated power (almost as in the romantic ‘tragedies of fate’ where human destinies were governed by mysterious objects).

In several respects, the method of the ‘anti-novel’ seems to be connected with the rise of cybernetics, the study of self-regulating dynamic systems. The existence of (learning’, ‘thinking’, self-improvement machines has given encouragement to behaviorism and neo-positivism. The difference between human beings and these dialectical machines must now be formulated, the nature of man must now be grasped afresh, and dialectical materialism must now be expanded and made more precise. Machines which, it has been calculated by cybernetics, are possible and which, in part, have already been made, frequently behave as though they had consciousness, although in fact conscious machines cannot and do not exist. Leading cyberneticists therefore consider consciousness to be irrelevant or even fictitious; what they describe is solely the behavior of a system. W. Ross Ashby, who with Norbert Wiener is the leader of modern cybernetics, writes in Design for a Brain:
Throughout the book, consciousness and is related subjective elements are not used, for the simple reason that at no point have I found their introduction necessary…. Vivid though consciousness may be to its possessor, there is as yet no method known by which he can demonstrate his experience to another.
I do not wish to recapitulate here all the argument between neo-positivism and dialectical materialism, but only to point out how closely the ‘anti-novel’ corresponds to these neo-positivistic ideas and to what a striking extent the people in these novels are reduced to the ‘black box’ of cybernetics, where only the relations of input and output matter and never the nature and essence of man. False philosophical conclusions from the revolutionary discoveries of cybernetics have linked up with a literary method which, in certain individual instances, may be as useful as behaviorism is in science but which, as a whole, not only describes the dehumanization of man but actually invests this dehumanization with the character of inescapable finality.
The method of the ‘anti-novel’ does not regain lost reality. In place of empty phrases and prefabricated conventional associations it puts forward details drained of all meaning and entirely disconnected sensory impressions. In rejecting the pseudo-facts of newspaper headlines, this literature has discarded facts altogether. All that is concrete dissolves; figures grope in a chaotic primeval fog, and there is for them no forwards nor backwards but only a timeless, directionless ‘existence’. The official illusory world has been replaced by a private yet no less ghostly one. The intention is to represent uncomprehended being, the ‘timeless’ being of man in a timeless darkness. But ‘being in itself is not yet real’, wrote Hegel; ‘only what has been comprehended is real’. And Marx: ‘Only the comprehended world as such is reality.’ A literature which deliberately rejects comprehension lacks the decisive edge of realty. The unreality that is its content may have come out of protest against the standardized illusory world: but in fact it is only the shadow of that world.
Some writers who also set out from the precisely observed detail nevertheless go beyond a world where everything has been frozen into an object or a fixed state. J. D. Salinger is such a writer. He too uses the behaviorist method, portraying the behavior of people through a sequence of petty details. Here is a passage taken at random from Fanny and Zooey:
Ten-thirty on a Monday morning in November 1955, Zooey Glass, a young man of twenty-five, was seated in a very full bath, reading a four-year-old letter. It was an almost endless-looking letter, type-written on several pages of second-sheet yellow paper, and he was having some little troupe keeping it propped up against the two dry islands of his knees. At his right, a dampish-looking cigarette was balanced on the edge of the built-in enamel soap-catch, and evidently it was burning well enough, for every now and then he picked it off and took a drag or two, without quite having to look up from his letter. His ashes invariably fell into the tub water, either straightway or down one of the letter pages. He seemed unaware of the messiness of the arrangement. He did seem aware, though, if only just, that the heat of the water was beginning to have a dehydrating effect on him. The longer he sat reading –or re-reading- the more often and less absently he used the back of his wrist to blot his forehead and upper lip….
Yet out of such a mosaic of details, gestures, snatches of conversation, faintly outlined situations, Salinger creates a maximum of atmosphere and discovers fresh aspects of psychological and social reality. His stories are without comment and without propaganda, yet they are exciting and gripping in an unusual way, perhaps for that very reason. In Salinger reality is newly discovered through the medium of young people sickened by the world that surrounds them and engaged, in one way and another, in search for the meaning of life. It is the new and extraordinarily subtle form of social criticism, going far outside and beyond the behaviorism of the ‘anti-novel’, that makes Salinger’s work so valuable and attractive. The world is seen though the eyes of children or very young people: that is why it appears, not as a conventional system to be circumscribed by ready-made phrases, but as an unexpected and shocking reality. A similarly example is the film Zazie dans le Métro (based on Raymond Queneau’s novel), where a little girl from the provinces discovers the grown-up world of Paris, the ghastly relity of a system where a toy turns into a bomb, a match can blast the ground shy-high, house-fronts collapse, and Fascist terror, murder, and fear creep out of the ruins. And when, at the end, the mother returning from her rendezvous with her lover asks the little girl how she has spent the day, Zazie replies with better scorn: ‘J’ai vieilli.’ The positive, unforgettably beautiful counterpart to this bitter film showing a child’s discovery of the capitalist world with all its fantastic antagonisms is the Soviet film A Man Goes Towards the Sun, in which another child discovers the world of growing socialism. These two films should be shown together all over the world. They would provide the strongest possible proof of two things: of the colossal contrast between the two worlds, seen unconventionally, without propaganda or false pathos; and of the overwhelming possibility of presenting both worlds with similar methods of modern art.
Many modern artists and writers share the belief that modern reality has nothing whatever to do with the available range of cliché images: that it is necessary to discover new situations characteristic of our time, and to build up a supply of new, powerful, unhackneyed images.

Throughout all the news cycles over the years, you can count on a continuity in U.S. government/media propaganda and strategy. Make a time capsule, fill it with today’s news, hide it away, and pull it out in five, ten, or fifteen years, and while many details (tactics) will have changed, the underlying themes will remain. Or do it in reverse.
Assuming the world miraculously escapes a nuclear war of annihilation, when the criminal Donald Trump is long gone from office, replaced by a Democrat or Republican, the United States will still be waging war against Russia and China and any country that stands in its and Israel’s way in the Middle East. The people who own and run the U.S. will still be waging information war against the American people. Their tactics may have changed but not their long-term strategy. MKUltra, the CIA’s “former” mind-control and torture program, is now fully digitized and nearly co-terminus with the Internet.
The continuity of agenda from one American president to the next is striking. Because Trump says and does openly what has often been done insidiously by American presidents, he shocks by his audacity. He commits crimes at home and abroad as if he were smirkingly firing some contestant on his former Reality-TV show. Some people find this perversely honest to justify their support for an obvious madman versus the covert kind. Such is the double-binding trap, the fake binary, that Simon and Garfunkel once set to music with their song, “Mrs. Robinson”:
Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon
Going to the candidates’ debate
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you’ve got to choose
Every way you look at it you lose
While Ronald Reagan could routinely call Nicaragua a “totalitarian dungeon,” and use the Contras to try to overthrow its legitimate government, Trump, while using similar language about Venezuela, simply bombed the country and kidnapped its President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
While Reagan, like Trump, was constantly saying that the Russians were always disseminating propaganda, disinformation, and managing the news, he always failed to mention that he and his staff, with the help of an obeisant media, regularly managed the news and lied to the world. In this they were typical presidents.
People may forget that Reagan, like Trump, was a master fabricator. Such examples are legendary. On two occasions he told Israeli prime Minister Yitzak Shamir and Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi hunter, that he had personally assisted in the liberation of the Nazi death camps. The truth is that Reagan never left Hollywood where his war service consisted of work in the First Motion Picture Unit of the Army Air Corps at the Hal Roach Studios. Reagan’s, like Trump’s, false claims were so innumerable and outrageous that only a media and a populace inured to falsity would allow him to get away with them in the 1980s.
But that’s the way it was and is and will be in the U.S.A. Trump is a flipped version of Reagan, whose great admirer was Obama, under whose aegis the U.S. intelligence carried out the coup in Ukraine in 2014, setting the stage for the ongoing U.S./NATO war against Russia via Ukraine, blah blah blah. It’s a small club, said George Carlin, of those who own and run the country, and you and I don’t belong to it. Yes, “Every way you look at it you lose.”
Now that the Chrisopher Nolan film, “The Odyssey,” has had it place in the sun dominating the news for weeks, a modern trickster named Anthony Fauci, the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, a man of many Trojan Horses, pops up like a weasel from the music box to grab the headlines once again.
Or I should say someone turned the crank and he was popped up.
Since the diaries that he kept during the Covid-19 days were revealed (diaries very oddly put on government servers and not on his private laptop or in a paper diary), we know from the horse’s mouth how famous and celebrated he was and how giddy his celebrityhood made him feel as he was lying to the public about Covid-19. Since the recent congressional hearings in which he was called to testify and where he pleaded the Fifth Amendment more than a hundred times, we can feel good knowing that covid “probably” came from the Wuhan lab in China and not from some bat or monkey who was chasing a weasel. Maybe, or could be, or probably, as Republican Sen. Rand Paul and many commentators concluded, while Fauci was mum.
No one mentioned any other possibility, including that the 2019-nCoV “virus” (the original name in December 2019) was never isolated or that when they renamed it in Feb 2020 – SARS Covid 2 – it was to conceal that fact of a linguistic slight-of-hand used to declare a pandemic in March 2020 against a non-existent virus before coming out at the end of the year with the deadly vaccines that did the killing in 2021-2022 and thereafter. There were so many other non-mentionables since the parameters of the hearing had been set to exclude them.
Presumed to be so smart, why did Fauci put his diaries on government servers?
We know that Fauci was quite verbose back in the day when he trashed those – including the three authors of the Great Barrington Declaration, respected doctors Jay Bhattacharya, Martin Kulldorff, and Sunetra Gupta – who dared to offer a different take on Covid-19. Whenever anyone questioned “the science,” as he termed the official narrative of covid, its statistics, the validity of the PCR tests, the effectiveness of masks, the six foot rule, the similarity between flu symptoms and covid and the near disappearance of flu in 2020, the experimental “vaccines” produced and approved at record speed, the horrible consequences of the shutdowns that were destroying economies, killing people, forcing people to despair and committing suicide, creating traumatized children and pushing along the new normal digital screen world, bankrupting small and medium-sized businesses for the sake of enriching the richest, etc.,
Fauci and his corporate media sycophants mocked such dissidents as conspiracy nuts aiding the invisible viral enemy. This was so even when the dissenters were highly respected doctors, scientists, and intellectuals who were expressing their First Amendment rights of free speech. Fauci ridiculed them all and many lost their jobs, their medical licenses, couldn’t travel, and were categorized as lunatics.
He didn’t advocate any First Amendment Bill of Rights for dissenters, as he does now for himself with the Fifth Amendment. No equal rights and no colloquy with others. And no shaking hands ever-ever-ever again as he told Time Magazine: “I don’t think we ever should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you.”
Isn’t it a shocking truth to finally know that Fauci didn’t tell the truth about the alleged origin of Covid-19? Can you believe it? That a top government official was lying to protect our “enemies” the Chinese when they really released the “virus” from their Wuhan lab? We should say – by accident. But accidents happen as everyone understands, and enemies usually work together to develop biological weapons to use on each other. Ha! Ha!
The media are going wild about this revelation that Fauci revealed in his accidently discovered dear diaries that were accidently left on government servers that revealed Fauci’s opinion that the Chinese probably accidently released a covid virus from Wuhan. Catharsis feels great. Accidents happen. Like shit.
The only problem is that this revelation tells us nothing of importance, even if true. It is what is called “a limited hangout,” an old trick of the intelligence trade where you reveal a so-called truth to conceal deeper ones when they are threatened. This happens within a framework of “deep state” trickery where even the public faces of the exposures may not know that they are being played.
If we postulate that Fauci publicly lied about his funding for gain of function research at the University of North Carolina and Wuhan, so what? So “America’s Doctor,” the most famous man in the world, a man beloved by celebrities and CNN’s Jake Tapper, et al. Is a charlatan, an ego-maniac and a liar like Trump or the other presidents he served under. Is that a great surprise or important?
What the media are all agog about is a diversion. We learn nothing about Fauci’s connections to the CIA and gain-of-function research being conducted in the U.S. and all across the world with 40 or so labs in Ukraine alone. We learn nothing about why medicine has been weaponized, the use of biological weapons, the so-called vaccines, the false statistics, etc. Nothing useful. Only that Fauci lied.
How many people have contracted Lyme Disease and ever made a connection to U.S. biological and animal warfare research and its connection to a Nazi scientist ?
Covid-19 was a con-job from the start. The official operation was launched on March 11, 2020 with worldwide lockdowns that destroyed economies while enriching the super-rich and devastating regular people. It was a propaganda achievement carried out by intelligence and military apparatuses in conjunction with Big Pharma, the World Health Organization, the World Economic Forum, etc. And promulgated by a vast around-the-clock corporate media disinformation campaign.
It was the third fundamental turning point – following the 1963 CIA assassination of President John Kennedy and the attacks of September 11, 2001 with their connected anthrax attacks originating from a U.S. government bioweapons lab – in destabilizing the economic, social, and political life of all nations while undermining their sovereignty. It was based on false science in the interests of further developing a biosecurity state. The intelligence agency planners who had conducted many germ wargame simulations leading up to COVID-19 referred to a future arising out of such “attacks” as “The New Normal.” A close study of these precedents, game-planning, and players makes this evident.
The aim was to militarize medicine and concentrate power. Check the 2010 Rockefeller Report, the October 18, 2019 Event 201, and Agenda 21, among other places.
The use of the PCR test to detect the virus and create cases and death numbers was a lie from the start. The American Nobel Prize winning scientist who developed the test, Kary Mullis, made it clear before his sudden death in December 2019 that “the PCR is a process. It does not tell you that you are sick.” It is a process “to make a whole lot of something out of something,” but it cannot detect a specific virus..
The belief that it can so test began with the unscientific PCR Corona protocol created by Christian Drosten (Fauci’s colleague) in Germany in January 2020 that became the standard method for testing the soon-to-be-named SARS-CoV-2 worldwide. I am sure this was preplanned and part of a high-level conspiracy. This protocol set the cycle threshold (amplification) at 45 which could only result in false positive results. These were then called cases: An act of fraud on a massive scale. If one had been diagnosed as “a case” via the PCR test, and subsequently died of any cause – a heart attack, cancer, old age, etc. That person was recorded as having died from Covid. Fauci, Drosten, and others engaged in a game about the origin – animals, the wild, perhaps a lab, etc., all the while knowing how the biological disease weapons were being tested and funded.

Washington and Tel Aviv appear comfortable in the back seat, shaping the conflict’s boundaries while others bear its costs.
For years, the war in Yemen has not been a conflict in search of a victor. It has become a struggle in which every side seeks to degrade their opponents, without achieving a victory the wider region cannot absorb.
This makes Yemen an ideal test of an idea advanced by US strategist Edward Luttwak in his 1999 essay “Give War a Chance”, later applied to Syria in 2013: not every cessation of war constitutes peace, and not every victory produces a desirable outcome.
Sometimes the strategic interest lies in ensuring no side prevails, preserving a balance that prevents any party from defeating the others. In Syria, Luttwak argued that a government victory would strengthen Iran, while its collapse would open the way for “uncontrollable jihadists”, as perceived by Israel and the US, making an “indefinite draw” the optimal US outcome.
More than a decade later, Yemen appears to test this logic without ever formally adopting it. The war has theoretically ended as a conventional confrontation, yet it remains unresolved on the ground.
In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened after the Houthis seized Sanaa, aiming to restore the internationally recognised government. Yet the war neither returned Yemen to its starting point nor reached a conclusive end.

“WHAT I KNOW ABOUT JEFFREY EPSTEIN”

An account from decades ago raises questions about his connections to Mossad and the FBI—but not the CIA.
Let me begin this messy story by telling you that I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, in a lower middle class, racially mixed ward that also included the University of Chicago and a few upper middle class neighborhoods. It was controlled by an elected Democratic party leader named Marshall Korshak, an attorney whose brother was Sidney Korshak. As I would learn in high school, Sidney was the most powerful mob boss in Chicago. He oversaw drugs, prostitution, police payoffs and had ties to the corrupt International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Decades later, when I was at the New York Times, Jeff Gerth, an expert on the financing of organized crime, and I published, after months of interviews, a four-part series on the newspaper’s front pages focused on Sidney and his control of racketeering, prostitution, and vice in Chicago.
The date the first installment of our series was to appear was delayed at the last minute because of a sudden Teamsters strike that kept the Sunday New York Times and its Korshak revelations from being distributed around the country for days. The senior editors at The Times understood why the strike had taken place, but that fact was never published.
Our reporting involved two long background interviews with Roy Cohn, the prominent New York mob lawyer and fixer who had famously served as counsel for Senator Joseph McCarthy when he was on the House Un-American Activities Committee during the postwar Red Scare and later as a mentor to New York businessman Donald Trump. Once assured we were speaking privately, Cohn provided a firsthand view of the link between politics and crime as well as the way certain prominent senators were kept supplied with pretty women.
So I knew the sort of man Jeffrey Epstein was when he first became known for providing airplanes for various politicians, including a former president, and later for running what seemed to me to be a series of a high-end whorehouses at no charge for prominent men, many high up in the world of American business and New York finance.
And so when I learned the story I’m about to tell, I wanted nothing to do with it.

These are videos seized from Epstein’s devices: footage he recorded himself, received from others, or downloaded from the internet. All redactions were done by the DOJ. Viewer discretion is advised.

Milei, Daniel Noboa, Jair Bolsonaro, and Nayib Bukele are lesser known but

When COVID hit, we were largely too freaked out by terror of “the virus,” or by resistance to that panic, to note the unprecedented oddity of that worldwide campaign, as every country, other than some few in Africa and the Caribbean (whose leaders paid dearly for it if they didn’t go along), bought the fear, and, consequently, craved the new “vaccine,” and then the boosters.
It was like Jonestown gone global, or the Red Menace spread beyond Eurasia, or the European empires approaching total mastery of the planet. Those of us who study propaganda were (are) gob-smacked by the totality of this Great Fear, and universal craving of the needle. To return to the beginning of my headline here: How did we come to this?
We may start working out an answer by reading Eric Daniel Buesing’s book, here mordantly reviewed by Joe Surkiewizc. I urge you to share it, and thereby spread awareness of the book, and then read that, and tell your friends and family about it, so that those of us who get the drift, and want to slow it down, then stop it, and reach ever greater numbers to reclaim our world again.

So, I haven’t been publishing many Substack columns lately, because I’ve been busy writing the USA road trip book, Strangers in a Strange Homeland: A Manic Odyssey in Search of the American Spirit. I’ll tell you more about it and promote it below.
First, though, I want to promote an interview I did with my partner in thoughtcrime, Anthony Freda. For those who don’t know him, Anthony is an artist, illustrator, and educator, based in New York City. He has designed the cover art for several of my books, including the book that has gotten me indicted in Germany, twice, and that prompted the police raid of my home last November.
Anthony has launched a podcast. He’s calling it The Tony Freda Show. It is “dedicated to exposing the lies of prevailing official narratives and helping to set captured minds and bodies free.” That sounds like a pretty good tagline to me.
I haven’t been doing any podcasts lately, mainly because I’ve been busy writing the new book, but also, honestly, because I’m tired of podcasts. I made an exception for Anthony, and I’m glad I did. We talked about my latest indictment, and my earlier indictment, and the book, and art, and the power of symbols, and global capitalism, and the new totalitarianism, and other aspects of the increasingly dark times we live in, and I was reminded of this epigram by Bertolt Brecht …

Sixty-nine-year-old Wynd Kaufmyn, a retired teacher from Berkeley, California, is believed to be the first person imprisoned for protesting the development of artificial intelligence, after she and other members of the group StopAI were arrested during a sit-in protest at the headquarters of OpenAI. Democracy Now! reached Kaufmyn at the San Francisco County Jail, where she is now serving a two-week sentence for charges including "interfering with a business." Kaufmyn says she participated in the protest because "This technology is fueling a dystopian level of surveillance. It's fueling a fascist state. It's going to take all of our jobs. It's already taken many of them. It's causing suicides, homicides and mass shootings. This needs to stop." Another group, named ControlAI, has made it a mission to brief lawmakers on "adversarial" threats from unchecked emergent technologies. We speak to ControlAI's executive director, Connor Leahy, who first came to national prominence for reverse-engineering OpenAI's GPT-2 model in his college dorm room in 2019. "Even though I was able to build such an AI system, I was not able to understand it," says Leahy, who warns against the development of autonomous so-called superintelligence and calls for governments to "criminalize the creation of superintelligence the same way that it is illegal to build a nuclear bomb."

In quick succession, three things happened in early August 81 years ago that fundamentally changed the world and the course of human history:
We start with 8:00 a.m. on August 6, 1945, when three gleaming, silvery four-engine B-29 Superfortress bombers, larger than any other flying machine in the world, soared at 31,000 feet over Hiroshima, just shiny specks in a clear blue sky, high enough that their four throbbing engines were scarcely audible from the ground.
Many of the city’s residents, as WWII ground towards its violent inexorable end, had become inured to seeing waves of such American bombers pass overhead and for some reason, never targeting their city. So if they noticed the three planes at all, they might have assumed they were spotter or damage assessment aircraft and not what they really were: a single bomber, an observer plane to take photographs of what would be a dreadful historical event, and a weather monitoring plane. Few probably even noticed when one of the lead planes in the formation released a huge 10-foot bomb from its specially-enlarged bomb-bay doors and then veered sharply into a rapid dive to create as much distance as possible from the shockwave to come.
Sending a message to Moscow
The US plan for this and another atomic bombing to come soon was to maximize the damage done and the human death tolls. Accordingly, they gave no warning to residents of either targeted city to evacuate. The plan was also to strike each city around 8:00 in the morning to maximize the number of people out on the street without shelter.
The plan worked. The throngs of Japanese workers in Hiroshima heading to their job sites, the little chattering children in their “sailor suit” uniforms on the way to school, mothers and grandparents worrying about what they’d find to buy for the evening meal at the city’s war-strapped street markets and fretting about loved ones fighting a losing battle in foreign lands—all were too preoccupied that morning to watch the bomb’s 44.4-second plunge to the designated detonation altitude of 2000 feet above the city.
In a way, they were the lucky ones. The bomb’s silent flash instantly melted the eyes as well as the cerebral neurons of those who were watching and instantly killed those not looking too, vaporizing their bodies or turning them to ash. Some 80,000 Japanese, mostly civilians, women, children, and elders, died instantly. Or if they were among the 100,000 located farther away from Grand Zero, soon after the 15-16 kiloton air burst. Another 100,000 would die more painfully and slowly later over days, weeks, months and years from radiation or physical injuries from the blast. The world’s first nuclear bombing had also instantly leveled the city of 350,000.
Up above that nightmare holocaust, Captain Robert A. Lewis, co-pilot of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the uranium bomb dubbed “Little Boy,” after witnessing its catastrophic results: an angry, searing, roiling mushroom cloud rising 45,000 feet into the sky above an entirely flattened city- penned in his combat notebook, “My God, what have we done?”
