Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,

This week, we at the Center for the Advanced Study of American Institutions and Social Movements (CEIMSA-IN-EXILE) are pleased to bring you CEIMSA Bulletin #908, in which we briefly present professor Ray Ginger’s classic study, Eugene V. Debs: The Making of an American Radical, which was written at the end of the Second World War. Debs’ life serves as an object lesson on the influences social forces have in determining the lives of individuals. In Debs’ biography we see the interplay of system, structure, and free will, much as it unfolds in our daily lives, today.

There are many interpretations of Debs’ political views, but what is inescapable is the evolution in thinking that he underwent throughout his life. This book, as well as other biographical works on Eugene Debs, is a sobering experience, alerting readers to the fact that we are all part of a system, which is embedded in a structure, that provides opportunities occasionally for monumental choices that can change our lives. Scientists have called such moments “a paradigm shift.” Historians call them “consciousness raising” experiences.

The public debates in the lifetime of Eugene Debs will be readily recognized in the articles and essays which follow this presentation and reflect our own inner and outer existence in the turbulence of today’s world.
