by David Joseph Deutch
Subject: Revolt, Revolution/Counter-Revolution & The Politics of Depopulation.
May 25, 2021
Grenoble, France
Dear Colleagues and Friends of CEIMSA,
It has been suggested by traditionalists that there are two kinds of
employees: those living in bondage, who know they are enslaved; and those who are
slaves but think they are free. For the latter, we are told, there is little
hope for emancipation from their masters’ will, while the former mentality
suggests an awareness of the constraints under which they live and of the
possibility to gauge their freedom accordingly, like the concert pianist who must chose his
next move from the necessary constraints of the keyboard before him, if he is to perform
according to his own will.
Or to borrow from a more earthy metaphor, our emancipation can be compared to our metabolism:
urinating is not the same as having a bowl movement - two different involuntary
muscular activities, each coming from a different place; both part of the same integrated
system – revolt and revolution.
Whether looked at
culturally, or biologically, the traditional perspective of a historical reality
of revolt, revolution, and counter-revolution is a science which stems from
knowledge of political economy and branches out into a variety of experiences.
The Neo-Malthusian ideology
today of "applied population control" – using police and military interventions and other, more
advanced methods of eugenics -- places this traditional view in question. As
technologies and scientific management reduce the number of “necessary jobs,”
(i.e. jobs that are profitable to employers), there appears to be, in the eyes of the ruling class today, an
“overpopulation problem.” The solution to this so-called problem is offered
by none other than those powers who have fabricated it and are now intent on profiting
from their compulsory "cure." It is the perennial “fox guarding the chicken coop” that should
alert both the employed and the unemployed, both the homeless and those now
living under bombardment in foreign lands: “voluntary servitude” is all that the
neoliberal ideology has to offer, and even this offer is limited only to those who
are judged not to be part of the “surplus population.”
The constraints are wicked,
and their music is foul.
Must we continue to forfeit
our lives to our rulers’ caprice?
What is the alternative?
Traditionally, the leverage
of social change is seen to be embedded in “perceived self-interest.” The
traditional capitalist instruments of control have included “the carrot” and
“the stick.” A “politics of genocide” has changed all this. The furious search
for maximum profits has created a new paradigm. Sooner or later, “leverage”
will become the organizing principle for social revolution, as no alternative
to the depopulation drive is forthcoming from ruling-class ideologies.
Recently I began reading an account of ideological
confrontations in another period of contemporary history: the Cuban Revolution.
It is the old story of a dehumanized population somehow finding leverage to
fight back and take possession of their own humanity from the dehumanizing
forces that surround them.
Jon Lee Anderson’s informative biography, Che Guevara, A Revolutionary Life (1997) has been described as “an
absorbing and convincing . . . indispensable work of contemporary history.”
Ernesto (Che) Guevara was the scion of Spanish ancestry,
who had lost much of their wealth but managed to hang on to their aristocratic
colonial culture in Buenos Aires. Born in 1928, he was reared to become a
reckless adolescent with little social consciousness, and plagued since the age
of ten by sever bouts with asthma, which continued intermittently for the rest
of his life. While Buenos Aires was becoming more cosmopolitan and Europe
oriented, “vigilante justice and indentured servitude” were features of life in
much of the hinterland. In many ways Che reflected
this popular culture, but his mother, a strong character who had retained some
of her family wealth and much of their aristocratic pretensions, guided his
education. He studied French and English literature at school and was an avid
reader at home.
Toward the end of the first section titled “Unquiet Youth,” the
author recounts the first meeting between Che Guevara
and Fidel Castro and draws an interesting comparison of their
character traits.
Ernesto Guevara and Fidel Castor were natural
opposites. At twenty-eight, Castro was a consummate political animal, overflowing
in self-confidence, one of nine children from a landowning family in eastern
Cuba’s of Mayarí
province. His father, Ángel Castro, had been an
illiterate Galician immigrant who had arrived in Cuba penniless and made
himself a modest fortune in land sugar, lumber, and cattle. Presiding over his
large finca, ‘Manacas,’
with its own store, slaughterhouse, and bakery, Castro was a rural patriarch
who ruled the destinies of three hundred workers and their families.
Ángel Castro bought
his bright, rebellious third son (the offspring of his second marriage, to Lina
Ruz, the family’s cook) the best education money
could buy: the Marxist-run Dolores primary school in Santiago, as a boarder at
Havana’s exclusive Jesuit Colegio Belén
high school, and law school at Havana University. Intensely competitive and
hot-tempered, Fidel acquired a reputation as gun-toting rabble-rouser on the
volatile Havana University campus. Even before Moncada
he had been linked to two shootings – one of a policeman – but had successfully
avoided arrest in both cases.
. . .
Fidel Castro had probably always thought
of himself as Cuba’s future leader. At school, if he joined any activity, he
fought to become the undisputed leader of his peers, whether it was coming in
first in a poetry competition in grade school, becoming captain of the
basketball team in Colegio Belén,
or winning recognition in student politics at Havana University.
At the age of twelve, he had sent a
precocious letter to Franklin Delano Roosevelt to congratulate him on his third
inauguration as president and to ask him for ‘a dollar.’ Later on, while José Martí remained his lifelong
inspiration, he came to admire powerful historical figures such as Julius
Caesar, Robespierre, and Napoleon. He seemed to possess an innate knack for
horse-trading and cunning that make for success in
politics, and knew how to dissemble artfully.
These traits pointed up a major
distinction between him and the man who would later stand at his right-hand
side, Ernesto Guevara. For Guevara, politics were a mechanism for social
change, and it was social change, not power itself, that impelled him. If he
had insecurities, they were not social ones. He lacked the chip on his shoulder
that Castro evidently possessed and had converted into a source of strength.
His own family were blue bloods, however bankrupt, and he had grown up with the
social confidence and sense of privilege that come from knowing one’s heritage.
The Guevaras may have been black sheep within
Argentine society, but they were still society. However much Ernesto
sought to reject his birthright and to sever his family links, he was indelibly
imprinted by them.
While Ernesto Guevara certainly had a
robust ego, even he did not possess it to the awesome degree of Fidel Castro.
In large groups, where Guevara tended to hang back, to observe and listen,
Fidel Castro was compelled to take over and be recognized as the authority on
whichever topic was under discussion, from history and politics to animal
husbandry.
Because of his asthma, Guevara was all too
aware of his physical shortcomings, whereas the burly Castro recognized none in
himself. Castro was not a natural athlete but felt he
could excel in anything if he set his mind to it, and as a result very often
did. Above all, he had the urge to win. For Ernesto, it had been an
achievement just to be able to play rugby and the other sports of his
youth, to be accepted as a team member. It was camaraderie, not leadership, that he craved.
Taller than average, with Brylcreemed hair and a small mustache that didn’t suit him,
Fidel had the well-fed look of a city man used to pampering himself. And he
was. He loved food and liked to cook it. In prison he wrote letters to friends
describing in detail the meals he had whipped up with the relish of a
sensualist. Ernesto, two years younger, was both shorter and slighter, with the
pallor and dark dramatic eyes associated with a stage actor or poet. In many
ways, their physiques reflected their personality differences. Fidel, unconsciously
self-indulgent: Ernesto, a creature of the self-discipline imposed upon him by
asthma.
Despite their many differences, Ernesto
and Fidel shared some traits. Both were favored boys from large families and
extremely spoiled; careless about their appearances; sexually voracious, but
men to whom relationships came in second to their personal goals. Both were
imbued with Latin machismo; believers in the innate weakness of women,
contemptuous of homosexuals, and admirers of brave men of action. Both were
possessed of an iron will and imbued with a larger-than-life sense of purpose.
And finally, both wanted to carry out revolutions. (pp.175 – 178)
Before meeting Fidel Castro in Mexico City in the summer of 1955, Che had traveled to Guatemala to witness the revolution led by the new president, Jacobo Arbenz, who had signed into law in 1952 a land-reform decree, ending the oligarchic latifundia system and nationalizing the properties of United Fruit.
The action had earned Arbenz
the undying enmity of Guatemala’s conservative elite and of the powerful United
Fruit Company, which enjoyed extraordinarily close contacts with the Eisenhower
administration. Among them were the Dulles brothers – the secretary of state
and CIA director respectively. Both had been associated with United Fruit
through their work with the Sullivan and Cromwell law firm, and its client the
J. Henry Schroder Banking Corporation, in turn the financial advisor to the
International Railways of Central America, IRCA. IRCA had owned most of Guatemala’s
railways before selling out to United Fruit in a deal handled by John Foster
Dulles. His brother, Allen Dulles, had been director the Schroder Bank, which
the CIA also used to launder its funds for covert operations.
The relationships between the Eisenhower
administration and United Fruit were downright cozy, and the list went on.
Among others, Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs John Moors Cabot’s
family owned interests in United Fruit, and Eisenhower’s personal secretary was
also the wife of the company’s public relations director. With such friends,
the United Fruit Company could afford to throw its weight around. To ratchet up
the pressure, it hired the tenacious Spruille Braden,
Truman’s former top Latin emissary, as a consultant. In March 1953, Braden gave
a fiery speech at Dartmouth College, urging the Eisenhower administration to
intervene militarily against the ‘Communists’ in Guatemala. Immediately afterward,
in a hint of how far it was prepared to go, United Fruit had organized an armed
uprising in the provincial capital of Salamá. In the subsequent trials of some of the
captured raiders, United Fruit’s involvement in the rebellion was unmasked, but
what wasn’t known publicly yet was that the CIA was also involved, and was
discussing further plans with United Fruit to overthrow Guatemala’s government.
By the end of 1953, the battle lines were
clearly drawn between Guatemala and Washington; Guatemala’s Central American
neighbors, especially dictators such as Somoza, were vociferous about their
concerns of a spillover effect to their countries. Meanwhile, either as
political exiles, or, like Ernesto, merely eager to see Guatemala’s ‘socialist’
experiment firsthand, hundreds of Latin
American leftists had arrived in Guatemala, and their presence had lent a combustive
element to Guatemala’s hothouse atmosphere as the war of words between the Arbenz government and Eisenhower administration escalated
daily.
Although it remained mostly concealed
beneath his political aloof exterior, by the time he arrived in Guatemala,
Ernesto seems to have undergone a political conversion – or at least he was
trying to talk himself into one. Although he wouldn’t act on his new beliefs
for a while, they do help explain what drew him to Guatemala. Part of the
evidence for this lies in an enigmatic passage he had written in Buenos Aires
while writing up his Notas de Viaje. Appropriately, he called it ‘Note on the
Margin,’ for it didn’t mesh with the rest of his travel narrative at all.
Without mentioning where the ‘revelation’
had taken place, Ernesto had situated himself in ‘a mountain village under a
cold star-filled night sky.’ A great blackness surrounded him, and a man was
there with him, lost in the darkness, visible only by the whiteness of his four
front teeth. ‘I don’t know if it was the personality of the individual or the atmosphere
that prepared me to receive the revelation, but I know that I had heard the
arguments many times by different people and they had never impressed me. In
reality, our speaker was an interesting guy; when he was young he had fled some
European country to escape the dogmatizing knife; he knew the taste of fear
(one of the experiences that makes you value life), and afterwards, after rolling
from country to country and compiling thousand of adventures, he had come to
rest his bones in this remote region where he patiently awaited the coming of
the great event.
‘After the trivial phrases and the common
places with which each put forth his positions, the conversation languished,
and we were about to part ways. Then, with the same rascally boy’s smile which
always accompanied him, accentuating the disparity of his four front incisors,
he let slip: “The future belongs to the people, and little by little or in one
fell swoop they will seize power, here and in the whole world. The bad thing is
that they have to become civilized, and that can’t happen before, but only after
taking power. They will become civilized only by learning at the cost of their
own errors, which will be serious ones, and which will cost many innocent
lives. Or perhaps not, perhaps they won’t be innocent,
because they will have committed the enormous sin contre
natura signified by lacking the capacity to adapt.
“’All them, all the unadaptable
ones, you and I, for example, will die cursing the power we, with enormous
sacrifice, helped to create . . . . In its impersonal form, the revolution will
take out lives, and even utilize the memory of that which for them remains
exemplary, as a domesticating instrument for the youth who will come after. My
sin is greater, because
I, more subtle and with more experience, call it what you wish will
die knowing that my sacrifice is due only to an obstinacy which symbolizes the
rotten civilization that is crumbling. . . .’”
This mystery speaker, by inference, a
Marxist refugee from Stalin’s pogroms whose conscious sin was his ‘inability to
adapt’ to the new power wielded by the uncivilized masses, now turned this
premonitory attentions to Ernesto.
“ ‘You will die
with the fist clenched and jaw tense, in perfect demonstration of hate and of
combat, because you are not a symbol (something which is crumbling: the spirit
of the beehive speaks through your mouth and moves in your actions; you are as
useful as I, but you don’t know the usefulness of the help you give to the
society which sacrifices you.’”
And now, duly warned of the consequences
of the revolutionary path, came Ernesto’s own ‘revelation.’ “I saw his teeth
and the picaresque expression with which he took a jump on history,
I felt the squeeze of his hands and, like a distant murmur, the protocolar salute of farewell. . . . In spite of his words,
I now knew . . . I will be with the people, and I know it because I see it
etched in the night that I, the eclectic dissector of doctrines and
psychoanalyst of dogmas, howling like one possessed, will assault the
barricades or trenches, will bathe my weapon in blood and, mad with fury, will
slit the throat of any enemy who falls into my hands.
“And I see, as if an enormous tiredness
shoots down my recent exaltations, how I die as a sacrifice to the true
standardizing revolution of wills, pronouncing the exemplary mea culpa.
And I feel my nostrils dilated , tasting the acrid smell of gunpowder and of
blood, of dead enemy; now my body contorts, ready for the fight, and I prepare
my being as if it were a sacred place so that in it the bestial howling of the
triumphant proletariat can resonate with new vibrations and new hopes.”
This passage reveals the extraordinarily
passionate – and melodramatic – impulses at work inside Ernesto Guevara at the
age of twenty-five. Powerful and violent, uncannily precognitive of Ernesto Guevara’s
own future death and the posthumous exploitation of his legacy by many
so-called revolutionaries, ‘Note on the Margin’ must be seen as a decisive
personal testimonial, for the sentiments it contained would soon emerge from
the penumbra of his submerged thoughts to find expression in his future
actions.(pp.122-125)
On July 20, 1955, Che wrote to his
Aunt Beatriz in Buenos Aires,
‘Time
has provoked a sifting out of the torrent of projects I was doing and now . . .
I can be certain of finishing only one, which . . . will be exported to the
next country I visit, the name of which no one know but God and his new right
hand.’(p.179)
On December 2, 1956, accompanied by a band of 81 men on
board the yacht Granma, Fidel Castro, landed on eastern coast
of Cuba. Most of his men were quickly killed or captured by Cuban military
forces, but among the dozen men who escaped were the Fidel’s brother Raul, and Fidel’s
new “right-hand man”
Ernesto (“Che”) Guevara. This small band soon began a
guerrilla campaign against Batista in the Sierra Maestra
mountains and took the name 26th of July
Movement to commemorate
the 1953 attack on the army barracks in Santiago de Cuba in an attempt to start
the overthrowing of the dictator Fulgencio Batista.
Sincerely,
Francis Feeley

Saleh Diab,
(environ 550 Palestiniens autochtones) vivent à Sheikh Jarrah

and Palestinians. Conflict and Resolution, Haymarket Books, 2012.

The
Palestinians mentioned apartheid in connection with Israel long before B'Tselem used the description. Now it is the turn of Human
Rights Watch (HRW) to — rightfully, if belatedly — accuse Israel of apartheid
in its latest report titled A Threshold Crossed:
Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution. Also
belated, but still welcome, is HRW's recognition that the "temporary"
nature of Israel's military occupation of Palestine is no longer an accurate
depiction of an ongoing colonisation process that the
international community has done nothing to halt.
HRW
says that its apartheid definition comes not from comparisons with South
Africa, but is based upon the systematic violence of demographic change,
oppression and control of the Palestinian people. "When
these three elements occur together, they amount to the crime of
apartheid."

online; Cold War Truth Commission
To members and friends of Historians for Peace and Democracy,
Here are a couple of notes about recent virtual events whose
presentations were recorded and are readily available online.
1. About nine thousand persons took in one or more sessions of the
online conference "Truth, Dissent & the Legacy of Daniel
Ellsberg" this past weekend, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the
release of the Pentagon Papers. The conference was organized by historian Chris
Appy and was sponsored by the University of
Massachusetts Amherst. The recordings of all eight sessions are available at https://www.ellsbergpapers.org/conference/recordings.
Among the sessions are "The American War in Vietnam and Why It Still
Matters," "The Pentagon Papers and Watergate" (with John Dean
and other figures from the Watergate drama), "Antiwar Movements Then and
Now," and "Whistleblowers" (the plenary panel, with Daniel
Ellsberg, now age 90, and Edward Snowden, speaking from exile).
2. An all-day "Cold War Truth Commission" on March 21
was sponsored by CODEPINK, Witness for Peace, RootsAction,
Veterans for Peace, and several other antiwar organizations. It included 53
presentations on specific topics, ranging from 3 to 20 minutes in length.
CODEPINK has put all of the individual talks online at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbIEXcAZ-4ZYA0SH2aMY3n9dZ531WuPcL.

Subject: Last time the vote was 187 to 3
Every
year, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approves a draft
resolution to end the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba. Every
year, the U.S. ignores the world and continues its cruel policy of punishing
the Cuban people. Only once
did the U.S. not vote against the resolution. It abstained in 2016 as part of
the Obama administration’s policy of rapprochement with Cuba. All of that
progress was reversed by the Trump administration, and candidate Biden
promised to change that. But now the Biden White House hasn’t done anything
and says Cuba isn’t a priority. Let’s show the administration that the people
of the United States think Cuba is indeed a priority! The Biden
administration insists that the world needs a “rules-based order”, but those
claims are undermined by U.S. policy towards Cuba. The embargo is illegal and
runs counter to the UN charter. If the U.S. wants to lead, it must lead by
example and abide by international law. The
upcoming UN vote on June 23 is an opportunity for President Biden to keep his
campaign promise of abandoning the failed Cuba policies of the Trump era. By
abstaining, the Biden administration will signal to Congress, the American
people, and the Cuban people that it is serious about reengaging with Cuba on
the basis of respect and friendship. The Biden administration should also use
that day to announce a new policy of normalization with an eye towards ending
the embargo. Right now,
Cuban doctors and nurses are fighting the pandemic all over the world. Four
Cuban vaccines are in development that will be shared with and produced in
other countries, without profits in mind. As Cuba leads the world against
COVID-19, the U.S. government continues acting like a pariah, ignoring the
clamor of the world to end the embargo. At CODEPINK, we’ll continue to fight
to demand an end to this economic war on the Cuban people. In radical
solidarity, P.S. Join
us tonight for a special episode of our weekly WTF webinar. CODEPINK’s Ciara Taylor and Moses Hernandez will host “WTF Does
Cinco de Mayo got to do with Imperialism?!” an
exciting discussion on the revolutionary history of Cinco
de Mayo that will explore the integral role of art and culture in the process

Subject: FW: a very brief explanation of Alison McDowell's work
Hi everyone –
While the link below is not a pithy “elevator pitch” in plain English of Alison
McDowell’s teachings of what the new world order has in store for us, Tessa
Fights Robots offers up an explanatory essay of what’s coming down the pike.
In Tessa’s
inimitable lyric languaging, she brilliantly
describes the emotional essence of what is at stake.
Thanks,
Tessa. You continue to be one of the strongest voices for how we can thwart the
psychopaths’ agenda. Cat

SUPERB
DECRIPTION of why it is so very difficult to convey the research and insights
Alison has excavated. This evil leviathan has disguised itself in ways too
abstruse for sound bites. Even the glossary Alison is generously working on
will no doubt be too kludgy and disconnected to fully
translate the horrors coming down the pike.
It's like you
want the ability to touch people and wordlessly, visually be able to imbue in
them the full emotional consequence of what awaits humanity if we don't start
conceptually grasping the world these psychopaths are constructing.
After listening to a dozen or more of Alison's interviews, an understanding of
the new technological systems is seeping into me via osmosis. Yet I still can't
fully convey in simple plain English to my fellow humans the darkness this New
World Order will wrought if we don’t stop it NOW.

Putin
rewrites the law of the geopolitical jungle
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/56505.htm
by Pepe Escobar
Putin’s address to the Russian Federal Assembly – a de facto
State of the Nation – was a judo move that left Atlanticist
sphere hawks particularly stunned.
The “West” was not even
mentioned by name. Only indirectly, or via a delightful metaphor, Kipling’s Jungle Book. Foreign policy was addressed only
at the end, almost as an afterthought.
For the best part of an
hour and a half, Putin concentrated on domestic issues, detailing a series of
policies that amount to the Russian state helping those in need – low income
families, children, single mothers, young professionals, the underprivileged –
with, for instance, free health checks all the way to the possibility of an
universal income in the near future.
Of course he would also
need to address the current, highly volatile state of international relations.
The concise manner he chose to do it, counter-acting the prevailing Russophobia in the Atlanticist
sphere, was quite striking.
First, the
essentials. Russia’s policy “is to ensure peace and security for the
well-being of our citizens and for the stable development of our country.”
Yet if
“someone does not want to…engage in dialogue, but chooses an egoistic and
arrogant tone, Russia will always find a way to stand up for its position.”
He singled out “the
practice of politically motivated, illegal economic sanctions” to connect it to
“something much more dangerous”, and actually rendered invisible in the Western
narrative: “the recent attempt to organize a coup d’etat
in Belarus and the assassination of that country’s president.” Putin made sure
to stress, “all boundaries have been crossed”.
The plot to kill Lukashenko
was unveiled by Russian and Belarusian intel – which detained several actors backed, who
else, US intel. The US State Department predictably
denied any involvement.
Putin: “It is
worth pointing to the confessions of the detained participants in the
conspiracy that a blockade of Minsk was being prepared, including its city
infrastructure and communications, the complete shutdown of the entire power
grid of the Belarusian capital. This, incidentally
means preparations for a massive cyber-attack.”

“Europe is

by Southbank Centre
(1:56:26)
Philosopher Slavoj Žižek and former Greek
finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis
and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange
discuss Europe’s future. With the recent economic crisis in Greece,
unprecedented challenges to centralised European
policy, and the lack of consensus on the ongoing refugee crisis, many would
agree that Europe faces its greatest ever predicament. Slavoj
Žižek, regarded as ‘the most dangerous philosopher in
the West’ (The New Republic), and Yanis Varoufakis, self-described ‘erratic Marxist’ and economic
‘rock-star’ (Business Insider and other publications), met in Croatia in 2013.
They have never appeared together on the public stage – until now. Take your
seat to hear them discuss the urgent task of building a different and more
democratic Europe. The conversation explores the contradictions of late
capitalism and some of the solutions that might just save the European project.
It is moderated by Croatian philosopher Srecko Horvat.

Subject: Sweden, then and now
What has become of Sweden: 1999 - 2021
Rummaging through my computer's dishevelled archive
recently, I came across an old recording which addresses some of the questions
I am often asked about Sweden, my adopted homeland. It is of my interview on
Swedish Public Radio in summer 1999, conducted by a congenial young woman who
had also immigrated from the United States but whose name I sadly do not recall
now 22 years later.
Among the issues she selected to discuss were: the basic features of the
Swedish/Nordic model of society, the impact of neo-liberal theory and practice,
Sweden’s global image, and general attitudes toward children.
Her final question concerned the likely effects of encroaching neo-liberalism
on Swedish society. The answer was sadly prophetic — though not very difficult
to conceive.
The discussion reminded me why I was eager to immigrate to Sweden from the
United States over three decades ago. That in turn may help all Swedes to
understand what they have to lose if they do not become more vigilant than most
of them have been in recent years — and may in fact already be losing, as
indicated by the references listed below.
The interview is 27 minutes long; the audio file in .mp3 format may be
downloaded from:

The social progress of the 20th century is now being reversed by a neo-liberal
offensive that is steadily gaining strength. In order to halt that trend and
restore the balance of power which is a precondition of the Nordic model, it is
essential to renew the struggle against an aggressive

Subject: The OAS supports war crimes in Palestine & Colombia
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro
keeps siding with the oppressors. He’s said nothing about Colombia, where at
least 39 protestors have been murdered by security forces and another 379
have been disappeared. Yet he can’t stop tweeting in support of Israel -
without a mention of the atrocities committed against Palestinians.
After one of the deadliest nights in Colombia earlier
this month, Almagro held a meeting the next day to
talk about Venezuela. After thousands of people around the world rallied in
solidarity with Palestine over the weekend, Almagro
designated Hamas a terrorist organization.
The OAS charter claims it is meant to promote peace,
justice, solidarity and independence - but it does none of that. What it does
promote is U.S. foreign policy, which is no surprise, as 60% of OAS funding
comes from our tax dollars.
It’s no exaggeration to say that the OAS is an extension
of the State Department. Almagro led the charge for
regime change in Venezuela, even seating fake Venezuelan diplomats from the
fake government the U.S. tried to install. He’s pushing for regime change in
Nicaragua. He routinely condemns Cuba. He supports Haitian dictator Jovenel Moise. He’s remained
silent on the violent repression of protests in Colombia, Chile and Ecuador.
These are all positions the OAS shares with the U.S.
At CODEPINK, our campaign against Almagro
began when he played an instrumental role in the coup in Bolivia in 2019,
leading to massacres and a right-wing coup government that oppressed its
population for nearly a year. Even after the people took their government
back, Almagro is still at it, criticizing the new
government for prosecuting the coup regime for its crimes against humanity.
In radical solidarity, P.S. Join us Thursday, May 20, for a discussion of the
book Viviremos: Venezuela Vs. Hybrid War with its
editors and authors. For the Venezuelan people the word “Viviremos”
(we will live) is a forceful proclamation to uphold and defend their dignity
and sovereignty in the face of a brutal hybrid war carried out by the United
States and its allies. Click
