The Tijuana/San Diego Coalition to Stop the FTAA

CALL TO ACTION: On Saturday, 21 April, we are proposing a multinational day of protest in the San Diego/Tijuana region in solidarity with the protests in Quebec as part of our campaign against the FTAA and for humanity. Come join us in support of worker's rights, immigrant rights, indigenous rights and the environment.

What is the FTAA? :

The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is an agreement currently being negotiated that would cut wages, undermine democracy and workers' rights, enforce "intellectual property rights," and promote lower environmental standards, expanding trade and increasing profits at great cost. An attempt to expand the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) , FTAA is currently being negotiated in secret by 34 countries in the western hemisphere, with very little information provided to the public or the press. This April, the FTAA will be discussed at the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, Canada, and people across the Americas are joining together to voice their opposition.

Upcoming :

Thursday 29 March, City College Teach-in. City College Mecha, ISO and environmental club are putting on a teach-in in the City College cafeteria around lunchtime. More info coming soon.

Past events :

FIRST SAN DIEGO STOP THE FTAA TEACH-IN A SUCCESS!!!!!! On Tuesday, 6 March, students and activists came together at the UCSD Cross-Cultural Center to discuss globalization, the FTAA, and the fight for worker, immigrant and indigenous rights, and the fight for environmental justice. About 70 turned out to listen to Paula Chakravarrty, an Assistant Professor at UCSD talk about how the FTAA fits in to the international Neoliberal assault. Maquiladora organizer Jaime Cota then spoke about working conditions and the impact of NAFTA along the border in the "free trade zone". Activists Fred Lonidier, Guillermo Rodriguez, Carla House, and Justin Akers spoke about how global capitalism affects us, the Zapatista movement and the growing movement against neoliberalism and inequality in the Americas. The tone of the teach-in, the turn-out (standing room only!) and the energy shows the growing interest in fighting corporate greed and the neoliberal agenda. Many of those who attended signed contact sheets, contributed to the border mobilization and left with a variety of literature. The movement is gaining steam....

Next step: Come to the next coalition meeting Sunday, March 18th and build for the mobilization! More teach-ins planned for late March and mid April.

In solidarity,
