"‘Mad Cow’ Fears Grow in France"

Paris-- Two more French supermarket chains, Auchan and Cora, said Tuesday that they had sold beef potentially infected with "mad cow" disease and urged consumers to return the meat. 

As concern grew with the new announcement only a few days after a recall from a separate food store, the French government said it was introducing random tests of cattle being sent for slaughter. 

In a measure intended to boost safeguards, France’s food safety agency recommended that a ban on animal fats be extended to types of exempted feed.
